This place is the punk rock Home Depot. If you're aching for that Posion Idea Record Collector's lp, a Misfits shirt and a boatload of O.G. accessories from Ape Leather, you're in the right place. This is the fundamentals of punk rock and you should build from here- not some poseur ass Hot Topic crap. Good Charlotte is not punk. You should know that already. Head to the back of the room for stickers (ask for the photo album/ catalog), patches and buttons. Ape leather stuff is glass encased in the front so you gotta ask for help. You'll probably be assisted by the owner, Jean (pronounced JOHN) Luc. He's friendly and knows more about punk music than you do. He'll offer recommendations of new bands and even give you advice on your pending trip to France (he's French.) Yea Amoeba has a bunch of stuff but they're too busy for you. This is record store is probably more punk than you are. Filled with obscure 7", patches, dvds, shirts, attitude, and more. Smells and feels like a typical dirty punk rock venue, and they used to have shows here too! Lots of history here. They have a collection of zines, and the records go for a fair price. It may be hard to find what you are looking for, but I'm sure the guys will help you find what you are looking for. They even have scenester pants, and many lifetimes of shirts for the hardcore fan's wardrobe. read more

I'd love to give this place 5 stars, but I can't bring myself to it. Seems like they focus more on selling shitty t-shirts than selling quality records at decent prices. I know this isn't an easy time for record stores right now, with ebay and all, but it bums me out when I find that somewhat-rare 7" I've been digging for and it's being sold at near-eBay prices. If I was gonna spend $20 on this thing, I would've just bought it from the comfort of my home computer. As others have said, Jean-Luc is a great guy. I don't think they still have shows here, but they used to have tons of great shows a few years back. Decent selection, but the lack of good deals bothers me. And with all those shirts, it's starting to feel less like a record store and more like a punk clothing store. I fear it may be entering the cheesy territory, a la Electric Chair and Zakk Attack. read more

Jean Luc (or Jean Puke if you're feeling like being an asshole) is one of the greatest men in existence. I've been to every location of this store even when it was on WESTWOOD. I remember everyone telling me about the great new punk rock shop where the owner would give you free posters of the album you were buying. I went there to check it out and bought the Filth/Blatz Shit Split on vinyl and sure enough, he wouldn't let me leave until he could find the promotional poster for it in his files. That album was pretty dated back when I bought it! Through the years, I have bought some great punk rock and punk rock accessories. I heard the other guy that works there loves making tapes and cds for punk kids instead of shooing them away with a "poseur" label. These are stand up guys and people who are keeping this scene alive. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is because I really miss the shows that they used to have here. A long time ago, the Bell Rays, the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs and the Hellacopters played here and I was stuck up North reading about it in Flipside. I really missed out. read more

Every punk shirt under the sun, tons of studs and belts, but I go to shop for vinyl. So lets get down to it. PROS: nearly 100% punk/metal/hardcore.....TONS of new releases. CONS: collectible records section is pretty picked through, obviously not getting a lot of new collections in. All records, new and used, are stored behind the counter. Just the jackets are out front, with no cardboard in the sleeve. The result record sleeves get damaged and make the records seem overpriced for what you're getting. Which might not have been the case with some protective effort. Place is also a little pricey on collectible records. Bought one record while I was there....Decided to play tourist and buy a 25 to 30 dollar record for 40 bucks, he threw in a canvas record bag with the store logo. Nice place, friendly staff. As a collector nerd I think they're damaging their inventory they way they do it. But that's their choice. I'll check em out when I'm back in a few months. Hopefully some new things to entice me will be there. Went in with $1,000 cash, spent $40.......... See ya later this year Headline. read more

(WOW) I remember buying lots of THE ADICTS shirts when I was obsessed with them at that time still am!, I got my first 9 ring bondage belt (I still have it 'til this day, it barely fits me since I've lost weight over the years HAHA, Oh great quality leather though worth the money.) I was never into punk back then, I was mostly into SKA, going to the ALLEN THEATRE, going only to SKA nights, great times! A very specialized Melrose shop, mostly punk, hardcore, ska. The selection is not vast, but it does cover a lot of ground. T-shirts, posters, badges, studs for your leather jacket - this is a punk rock paradise. Even the vinyl listed under "collectible" status isn't overpriced. My daughter picked up a great Operation Ivy poster for $10. Free fanzines at the counter, a very engaged (owner/manager?), and a real passion for the genres represented make this a must-stop the next time I'm dragged down Melrose to "look at shoes," etc. read more

If you are looking for punk rock, ska or metal... Headlines is a must-stop. If you are looking for anything else, keep moving. For the most part, this place wheels and deals in punk and everything that it embodies. Vinyl? Check. CD's? Check. Collectables? Check. Weird GG Allin back patches? Double check. For a store it's size, the selection is extensive. The store has a great selection of some punk rock staples as well as some rarities that are much harder to locate. Everything is wonderfully organized. More popular bands are clearly categorized and labeled and everything that isn't is clumped together but not in a way that makes things difficult to sift through. The prices here are excellent- both for new and for used stuff. I have yet to see more reasonable prices on punk albums anywhere else. Pop your head in! you might be pleasantly surprised read more

great shop. I was so happy when I happened upon it years ago and I love it. Great vinyl's, great cd's. Tons of Tshirts in many sizes (although I admit better for guy sizes). They have skate decks, girls shirts, jackets, jewelry, baby clothes, wonderful stuff. Jean-Luc is a really nice guy, very knowledgable about music, and he reccomends some great bands. Stopped by for the first time last night. It's a good-sized record store specializing in punk, hardcore, garage, thrash, and related music. Couldn't really identify where new records were slotted (upon further exploration, the new and used CDs are mixed into the same stacks), but I was impressed by the wide range of used CDs for sale. They even stock thrash metal and rockabilly. Worth the occasional weekend paw through, for sure. Good to know it's within walking distance. CDs range from about $12 to $16, and if the proprietor doesn't have something you want, he can look into ordering it from a distributor (like Ebullition) or the label directly. And he has a purchase card club. For $10, you can sign up to get 5% off on every purchase, as well as invitations to special sales. This month, you get a card free if you spend more than $40, and the timing is good because he has a great sale in December -- 1% off for every day of the month... so the end of the month is 30% off. Been going here since high school to pick up old Some Girls, Das Oath, and random power violence records. It's out of the way for me, but Headline is great because you're always bound to find something you saw on e-Bay for a lot cheaper. The way they categorize their music is genius, too. I don't remember specifics but it's a bunch of genres they came up with. Anyway, this is the quintessential punk store to come get your bullet belt and studded choker or Conflict back patch without having to go to Electric Chair or Hot Topic and ruin your street cred. If you can, try going on a weekday before rush hour because finding parking on here is damn near impossible since you need a permit to park anywhere close. read more

Love it, love it, love it. What else can I say? There aren't enough good rekkid stores around anymore... I wish they had used vinyl, but it would take a way bigger store for that, and sometimes I even find original issues of old punk and garage records here new there that I had been looking for used all over the place and for prices cheaper than they are selling used on ebay for... And Jean-Luc is a total sweetheart... I wanted to get this discount card that you had to shop on a specific date to get, and I called him up that night when I couldn't make it and he agreed to extend the deal to the next morning for me- so now I have my Headline Records card which saves me 10% all the time... whoohoo! I need it, I'm such an addict... and now that I'm working again the itch to buy records is creeping up on me once again- so I'm sure I'll be hitting Headline sometime this weekend. read more
