I've been a longtime patient of Dr. Choi. For years I was a nervous dentist-goer, but definitely changed when i started coming here. Every visit I end up laughing and enjoying my conversation and time there, (I know, crazy) but also know im getting accurate and complete care. Each procedure I've had done I have had no complaints on. Typically the numbing shot is the worst part! I'm always explained everything up front of what is being done, what I can expect to happen and also what caused the issue. They also frequently check in to ensure I am comfortable during the procedures. I know that it is a business, but Dr. Choi and his staff always take the time to make me feel seen and somehow remember what all is going on in my life despite seeing me every 6 months. If you're looking for a great dentist to ease your mind about anything dental, look no further. Healthy Smiles is the way to go, and that's the tooth. read more

If Dr. Choi says you need a root canal, get a second opinion. Dr. Choi was my dentist a decade ago. Despite 2x day brushing and flossing, he said I needed a root canal at almost every cleaning. When he said I'd need my FOURTH one, I wised up and got a second opinion. 10 years later, the tooth Dr. Choi said I needed a root canal on is still perfectly fine. I can only assume the other 3 root canals he did were completely uneccessary as well. Do NOT trust this man. read more

I went to Healthy Smiles in 2019 and it was great. Problems started post-pandemic. First of all, they never let people know they had reopened, and their website still indicated they were closed for quite some time after they re-opened. I get that they had to close and catching up would take a while but...why was it a secret? That's not great patient care. So I had to wait a long time for a cleaning, but that's understandable, fine. Then the real problems started. Healthy Smiles has another patient with the same name as me, but for whatever reason, refuses to differentiate us by birth date. Therefore, all of my appointments for the past 1.5 years kept getting mysteriously cancelled, not by me. I went in and discovered this when they told me they needed my insurance info...which I had provided on the phone that morning, not to mention I had been a patient for 3 years previously and my insurance info had not changed. So every time I talk to the front desk folks, I remind them that there are two of us and use my middle initial. I thought they might make a note or something...nope. Anyway, this confusion has led to delays repeatedly and I will not go back anymore. I couldn't get a cleaning every 6 months anyway - apparently their practice is too full. I think that is irresponsible. After waiting 9 months for one appointment, and thinking I was on a cancellation list only to find out that the appointment had been cancelled by the other patient with my name, the office offered me an appointment for a cleaning but no exam the following day. OK fine. But I thought the dentist would follow up and give me an exam the following week when I was there again to pick up a nightguard (yep, wish I could have picked it up at my apppointment and not had to take off more work...). I got only the most cursory exam...not confidence-inspiring. Last time I was there, Dr. Lee also told some "funny" stories about marmots being hit with golf balls on the golf course, and one being injured/in pain. This was upsetting, not funny. As a new patient to this office, my first experience with the team was amazing! I knew my teeth weren't in the best condition and they all worked to make sure I could get my deep cleaning treatment completed before the year-end, which was especially hard since their schedule is fully booked out 6 months. I've been a patient of Dr. Choi for a decade now, and I have to say he's one of the best dentists I've ever had. What initially drew me to him was that more than half of my coworkers were his patient, as his office used to be within walking distance of our workplace. However, due to COVID and subsequent downsizing at my work, some of them have left Reno and few of them have moved to dentists closer to their homes. Several of us continue to work with him (like me). Below are my reasons why I still work with him. Punctuality: Dr. Choi is always on time. I rarely wait more than a few minutes, which I appreciate greatly. Efficiency: He gets straight to the point without sacrificing quality. I like that he doesn't waste time but still provides thorough care. No pressure: Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Choi never tries to upsell unnecessary procedures. He respects my decisions and gives honest advice without pushing me into anything. Open communication: He's very transparent about the necessity of procedures and discusses the options available, allowing me to make informed decisions about my dental health. I'm very curious and cautious about the procedures and need to understand how they work before I let the doctor work on me. (Primarily because at the last dentist, they did a procedure that caused me to faint and ending up in the ER). Availability during emergencies: I needed to get hold of Dr. Choi during a severe tooth infection. The third party service made it a little hard to get hold of him but once I was able to get hold him right during the middle of a dinner party he was in, I was able to get antibiotics prescribed for immediate term and then got appointments pretty quickly after that to get the issue taken care. Basically, Dr. Choi promptly addressed the situation, demonstrating his commitment to his patients' well-being. Caring attitude: Dr. Choi genuinely cares about his patients. He's not just there to do a job; he's invested in their dental health and overall well-being. Recommendations: He provided me with a great recommendation for an orthodontist, showing that he's well-connected and has his patients' best interests at heart. Update: after paying this dentist $150 to fix his faulty product, I have now received a bill in the mail to pay him almost $200 MORE. He billed my insurance $337 for the 10 minutes he worked on my son fixing his mistake after I paid him $150. I have a call into their billing department. I will update with what they say. UPDATE: They removed the charge with no explanation, but without me having to push back anymore. A side note is that this is the first bill I have received for this charge and it was already in the "30 days" category rather than the "current balance" category. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Choi's for 12 years, and my teeth were in terrible condition when I first started going there, but over the years, Dr. Choi was able to significantly improve my teeth. Recently, I underwent major dental work that spanned over 10 months, during which I was continually under Dr. Choi's care. He coordinated and worked very closely with my endodontist to fix my complex dental case very well and included multiple implants and bridges. Throughout the entire process, Dr. Choi was always patient and available for any questions and concerns. His preventative care has been excellent, and he is always thorough at my annual check ups. He ensures that regular X-rays are done to detect any issues early on. His hygienists are great and clean my teeth well without being too rough. Their office is busy, so scheduling routine visits can be several months out; however, they have always accommodated me whenever I had any urgent issues such a tooth pain or a cracked tooth. Their front office staff have also always been friendly and professional. Every time I've left a message, they have followed up. When some of my teeth needed specialist care, he referred me to some very good perio- and endodontist, which I appreciated. I was so apprehensive when choosing a dentist, because hey it's my teeth, and who even loves the dentist lol. Well, I've been trying to get into Healthy Smiles since pre-pandemic, my partner said to try out her dentist and we literally walked in and got an appointment for the very next day. How amazing is that?? They took my new x-rays, and even cleaned my teeth lol- and I was within a few more days to actually finish up removing childhood silver fillings- Yes, I still had one to finely finish replacing with porcelain. They are entirely reasonable and leaves you feeling at ease. Short Version: Worst case scenario they are liars. Best-case scenario they have more patients than they can shake a stick at so they don't have time for you. Either way would not recommend. Long Version: This dentist was recommended by a co-worker. I thought at first the whole spa treatment felt a bit shady but she had had a good experience. Dr Lee recommended a root canal my first visit and said there were several other small cavities. I got the root canal and a temporary crown. Covid happened. They didn't let patients in so I had a temporary crown for over 3 months. But, I was understanding because of the pandemic. When things re-opened, I got my permanent crown as well as some unnecessary sass from Dr. Lee and scheduled an appointment to start work on my cavities. I had to call to reschedule the cavity work because of a conflict at work (I called over a week before my scheduled appointment) and the soonest they could get me in was nine months later. I was a little miffed anyway by Dr Lee's not very friendly personality and I didn't want to sit on those cavities for 9 months so I decided to see another dentist. When I went to my new dentist I told him that I had several small cavities for almost a year that I was worried about and the dentist said I had no cavities at all! They had done X-rays and all that. I cannot imagine why my new dentist would lie to tell me that I don't have cavities when I do and now this is about a year later and I have not had any other cavities since. So my only conclusion is that Dr Lee told me I had cavities when I did not. Now I'm wondering if I even needed that root canal to begin with.... read more

I was eating a muffin one day and I wondered if it had nails in it. My tooth felt strange. The next day, while having dinner, I said out loud, "What's wrong with my tooth?" A quick trip to the mirror revealed that it was gone, except for a tiny stub showing layers of enamel, bone, and mercury filling. Damn. I was going to have to break my 25 year record of going without dental care. It's a long story involving fear, pain, TMJ, and some really bad dentists. My solution was to brush and floss my teeth obsessively, avoiding dentists like the plague while carrying portable toothbrushes and floss with me. Clearly, this didn't work to perfection. I was terrorized, but fortunately my Dad, who has had epic dental problems, had been receiving outstanding dental care from Dr. Lee and her team for years. He made a phone call and they fit me in on short notice to see Dr. Choi, Dr. Lee's partner. To be honest, I actually thought I would rather die than go through with this, but I had no choice. So off I went to the guillotine (or so I thought). Dr. Choi was straightforward, businesslike, professional, and reassuring. I felt instantly at ease. The staff, from incredibly positive and patient Amanda at the front desk, to Martha's detailed x-raying and cleaning, to Chris' assistance and teamwork during procedures, is absolutely top-notch. My treatment: antibiotics, a root canal, a crown, and four cavities that need to be filled. I feel extremely fortunate and grateful to be receiving such skilled and compassionate care, and much to my surprise, my fear of the dentist is abating, even after the root canal! Dr. Choi is so focused and efficient, but always asking if you are ok. I didn't even feel the numbing shot, and he has this really cool way of shielding the instrument he is going to use so you don't see it (needles, drills, etc.) which to me is super helpful and keeps my hysteria level low. I can assure dental-phobic patients that this is the place to go. The care and treatment you will receive here is world-class. From warm neck wraps, bottled water, soothing music, and paraffin treatments for your hands, you will actually be able to relax at Healthy Smiles. Those are all nice extras, but the real heart of this practice is the art and science of dentistry merging at an incredibly high standard. I will not be avoiding the dentist anymore thanks to Healthy Smiles. read more

Wow, what a difference a couple of years make! Everyone in office still very nice, Dr. Lee is still great, but gone is the relaxed, laid back atmosphere. Replaced with rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide and wash your hands at the sink before you even sit in a chair. Be aware they are using some new very uncomfortable sucking device throughout every procedure, another new covid protocol, it was all very unpleasant. Thank you Yelpers for the Reviews! I had to find a new dentist and did it based on the reviews in Yelp and chose Healthy Smiles. It was a great choice. I went this past Tuesday and the whole visit went well and that's saying something since the news wasn't very good (sad face!). I knew I had an issue and Dr. Choi confirmed it through x-rays and sensitivity tests, etc. He was extremely professional and patient and walked me through all the steps and options. Martha was the dental hygenist that set me up and did the cleaning - she was wonderful. She was also very professional and kept me informed of everything. They have a screen for the patients to see their own x-rays as they are being taken and big windows to look out of. Everything is clean, in great condition and orderly. They do offer parafin for the hands, cold compresses (or cucumbers if you're not wearing make-up) for the eyes and a warm pillow for your neck - those were really nice treats and helped give me something else to focus on while sitting there getting worked on. They have a beautiful lobby, nicer than some living rooms I've seen! And a nice little water/coffee station set up. Overall, I am really glad I trusted Yelp once again!! A great place and, while I can't say I'm looking forward to going back to the dentist, I'm certainly not dreading it either (happy face!). read more

i have teeth problems from being in the military Im not going to get into it on here, this office was clean and the front desk was workers where nice but Dr. Choi was something else, you would think as a dentist you wouldn't shame and talk down to your clients but he definitely did I would never suggest going to this dentist office I set an an appointment for x rays and extraction and showed up and confirmed that with the front desk after the x rays Dr.Choi came in and belittled me shamed me for the conditio of my teeth and told me I wasn't worth his time then did not do the extraction and said it's against there policy to do that on the same day. I will never go back and would highly recommend no one ever goes here either. read more

So today I went to the spa. I mean dentist. I mean spa. Seriously, I know a good spa and can smell one from a mile away, so when I entered the front doors to this joint, I was definitely impressed with the zen. They play the same music and the smell was similar. While I wasn't stoked about the additional dental work I need (always, my teeth are such a curse!), I was impressed with the speed and thorough job of the cleaning BY THE DENTIST herself and how kind she was in delivering and educating me with the news about some new cavities forming. Such is life. But she was awesome. And even better, they gave me a lavender (ah, my fave) paraffin wax hand treatment during my visit along with an eye mask and a heated neck pillow. I didn't have to awkwardly squint my eyes closed because I had that nice eye mask! Really fab. Not at all looking forward to my upcoming dental work, but I'm not gonna lie... getting another complimetary hand treatment isn't going to suck. read more

I loved Happy Smiles dentistry. I found Dr. Lee to be kind, intelligent and informative about dental care and recommended treatment options. The practice itself felt more like a spa experience and I looked forward to my 6 month cleanings as a respite. What she created was an atmosphere of calm. So why the one star review? I had my first tooth emergency. It was mishandled and had I not sought out additional care from outside sources, it would have resulted in delayed treatment and complications including worsening infection. The experience with Happy Smiles started well in that I was scheduled to be seen within a couple of hours from my initial call. All covid protocols were actively in place and adhered to. The dental hygienist was kind and gentle when obtaining x-rays of the infected tooth. As a Healthcare provider, I knew what I was seeing on the xray. Dr. Choi was not aware of this. Dr. Dr. Choi, Dr. Lee's partner in the practice, came to assess and began berating me. He did not provide any explanation just pointed at the xray, saying that Dr Lee told you you needed a crown for your cracked tooth. And now look. It's infected. He prescribed antibiotics and did not make any recommendations or provide medication for the intense pain that I had reported kept me up most of the night. The front office staff did not provide me with the prescription initially. I had to ask for it. They were incredibly helpful in navigating the endodontics referral with options for in network providers. I brought my prescription to the pharmacy and they reported that it had not been signed and were unable to get through the after hours call center to request verbal authorization. I called and was on hold for more than 10 minutes. I requested a call back from Dr. Choi or validation from the call center that it had been completed. I did not receive a call back. Nor did the pharmacy. I called again and it was reported that the answering service requested a call back and did not receive one. They did not intend to call him again. I asked if they called Dr. Lee my regular provider and they reported they were only calling the provider who I saw that day. I ended up having to initiate a teledoc appt through a different provider to obtain my antibiotics. Thank goodness I had the referral form, she initially felt uncomfortable, which I understand relating to antimicrobial stewardship. The pharmacy was great. Even though they were closing soon, they quickly filled my prescription and I was able to begin treatment. I called back the answering service back to notify them that I had obtained the antibiotics and my frustration of how I had to navigate the system to obtain a prescription which was Dr. Choi's responsibility. This is where it got REALLY frustrating. The answering service person kept repeating things back in a different way and did not seem to have an understanding of basic grammar. This practice gets 1 star because when it really matters, during a dental emergency. There is no sense of urgency or accountability to the patient. Accidents happen. We are all human and make mistakes (regarding not signing prescription). It was a choice not to follow through on ensuring proper treatment was initiated. Had I not been aware of my options to obtain an antibiotic my treatment would have been delayed and worsening infection and other complications. I also went to urgent care and requested a shot of toradol to assist with pain control and inflammation reduction. This aspect of care was not addressed by Dr. Choi. I will not be returning to the practice. While I loved having a spa experience for regular dental needs, I need a provider who will rise to the occasion when an emergency occurs. read more

If you are looking for a great dentist and at the same time go to a spa, then this is the place for you. I still remember my very first visit here, 6 years ago. They ask you if you'd like to get your hands dipped in paraffin wax even before the doctor sees you. The waiting area always has some refreshing beverages or coffee for patients that are waiting. It is very clean and very well decorated. All the dental assistants are wonderful. They are friendly and polite, actually all the staff. I see Dr. Lee and she has always been pleasant and calm. When you are getting any kind of work done, they will ask you if you'd like a neck pillow, eye pillow, cucumbers for your eyes and I think at one point movie goggles. I usually do the neck pillow which is nice and warm every time and the eye pillow. All in all, Healthy Smiles to me is more of a spa trip rather than a dentist appointment. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that has never liked the dentist. Your fear and hesitation will go away after you come to Healthy Smiles. read more

I am very impressed with this practice. As others have mentioned, the ambiance is intentionally spa-like. The staff were friendly, professional, and efficient. Dr. Lee is lovely with a calm, caring demeanor. Due to a myriad of circumstances, it had been years since I had been to the dentist, however there wasn't even a flicker of judgment when this information was revealed. The cleaning I received was thorough without being rough. For once, I didn't have the residual achiness I typically expect after a cleaning. It bears noting that I was 36 weeks pregnant at the time of my first visit. The receptionist quickly recommended we contact my OB to get a release for X-rays. My OB quickly came through with the approval. However, Dr. Lee assessed that we should wait until the next appointment in six months (after baby is born) to do the X-rays. This flexibility is commendable. She has no guarantee that I'll be back, but she pushed the procedure to the future when she could have easily done it and collected the compensation from my insurance. This action showed a concern for the patient rather than the bottom line. I will certainly be back in six months. read more

It's as if we were made for each other If your looking for a dentist you need to know that they are so busy that they are normally out about 2-4 months for new patients. But it is so worth the wait!!! The entire experience as soon as you walk is so soothing ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Once you get to the back the first question that ask is which spa treatment do you want today, you have to choose between the hand wax, the warm pillow and cucumbers over your eyes I think. I like pampering myself once in a while but have never had a spa day and so when i experienced all of these together i felt so good! I seriously make a spa day out of this appointment. The doctor is such a sweetheart and so are all the other people that assist in the dental experience. They are skilled dentists and hygenists, but I have had trouble getting in for emergency work even before COVID19. Then they called to cancel both of our appointments in the spring due to the ADA and State advisories, then never called us back after they reopened. Then when we finally called them to check to see when we could get in, they wanted to book us out into the next year. This would have my exams and cleanings be over a year and a half apart. My dental health deteriorated to the point where I had to seek help elsewhere to manage the issues that worsened due to lack of care. If they could not see us after reopening, it would have been nice at least to get a call to let us know we needed to find another dentist. read more

I've been going to Dr. Carol Lee at Healthy Smiles for about 5 years now (at least). I love her! Besides the spa like treatment every time you go, Dr. Lee and Martha have always been gentle, informative, timely.... I have had my 2 front teeth replaced with crowns and I couldn't be happier. I would definitely recommend for anyone needing cosmetic treatment besides regular care. Also you get a hand paraffin wax dip, warm neck pillow and different choice of eye covering when you go in. I really like my mouth. I need it to eat yummy things. Thats why I don't trust it with just anyone. I've seen both the dentists here and they're great. I told them I was unhappy with some previous work I'd had done and they were hesitant to fix it, just because it wasn't causing any real problems and the dentist who performed it would probably charge less to fix it than they'd be able to. I thought that was a very fair explanation and appreciated the honesty. They don't force mouth guards or procedures on you unless it's something you actually need. After a year of cleanings at a dental "clinic" I was worried I had expensive problems but they saw no evidence of them here. This is definitely not a place to go if you want to get a lot done but is great if you are more conservative with surgeries and don't enjoy getting them unless it's truly necessary. And they will tell you when it is. Their quote will also be a fraction of what the chain dental clinic will charge. At the very least I would see them for a second opinion if you find yourself being pushed toward a procedure you don't want elsewhere. They certainly do what they can to make a generally miserable experience tolerable with as much spa infusion as possible. You get paraffin on your hands, a warm wrap on your neck and cucumbers over your eyes as they scrape and poke away at your teeth. Then there's a Keurig and bottled water out front so that when your finished you can get back to your day. read more

Had a very positive experience here. I usually don't mind the dentist's office, but this one actually wants me to look forward to it. The staff are very friendly, the space clean and the facility and equipment are very modern. I was there for my annual x-rays and cleaning. The x-ray tech did his best to make the process least uncomfortable. Before the actual cleaning, he asked if I would like a warm pillow around my neck, a parafin wax treatment for my hand, a that cucumber/towel thingee to cover my eyes, or all three. Of course, I asked for all three. Dr. Lee then came in and did the exam. She was very nice and efficient. She did the cleaning herself, which surprised me because I had always had dental hygienists do that on me vs the dentist. But, I'm not complaining. She was done in no time. Most relaxing and comfortable dentist visit ever. I'm glad our insurance provider changed. Otherwise, I would not have had the chance to visit this office! I highly recommend. read more

I've had the most difficult time finding a dentist in Reno. In the last 5 years I've switched 3 times, and I hate to say it but it had been over a year and a half since my last cleaning because of the ordeal of finding someone I'm comfortable and happy with. I know, kind of gross. I switched for a few reasons. Big ones were trust and cost. I won't name names but my last dentist was great until he moved into a new office and married his hygienist, suddenly costs went soaring and it seemed like I was being recommended unnecessary procedures. The last time I went to see him, his wife did my cleaning and spent the entire hour showing me her expensive jewelry and of all the luxury vacations they had planned. It was weird. and generally my insurance covers "reasonable" expenses, including covering cleanings 100%. This was the first time my insurance made me pay out of pocket to cover the excessive fees the dentist charged. (I had to pay an additional $60 to cover the cleaning. I think my insurance pays up to $200.) He also wanted to schedule me for expensive fillings he said I needed but would not show me on the xrays which teeth/areas had cavities. I hesitated to schedule because I was not convinced he was telling the truth. Anyway, in my long overdue search for a new dentist I did some research and picked Healthy Smiles. I will admit the spa like pampering influenced my decision. It was well worth it. It's not over the top, they still focus on the health and treatment of your teeth, but it's an added luxury that makes going to the dentist almost pleasant. (I did the paraffin hand wrap, eye mask, and warm neck pillow. Loved them all) Everyone was really nice and patient in explaining things clearly. They were very prompt, I think it was 5 minutes from check in to sitting in the chair. I've waited over an hour at other dentists so this was surprising. One thing that pleased me greatly is that Dr.Lee actually does some of the cleaning, I've never had a dentist take the time to do that. I was impressed by that. Other dentists sort of just take a minute to look in my mouth when the hygienist is done, some never even see me during a cleaning appt. Because it had been so long since my last appt and having my previous dentist swear I needed several expensive fillings due to cavities I was worried about my dental health despite my meticulous flossing and brushing. Dr Lee assured me that I have very healthy teeth, no signs of decay at all. She scrutinized the xrays on my urging, but shook her head and said "no, your teeth are very healthy". I was relieved, but not that surprised that my former dentist was trying to get me to get unnecessary work done. Dr. Lee had a very calm demeanor and answered a lot of questions. My teeth felt fantastic after the cleaning, no gum pain, and I am looking forward to my next cleaning. Check out was prompt and the gal was really friendly and great about explaining the paperwork and reassuring me it was all covered. (Yep, even with the added spa pampering, they were well within my insurance limits.) read more
