Went to Heat Bistro for the first time for a weekend breakfast with a couple of friends. (Located in the former I-Hop building not far from the freeway off of Rancho Peñasquitos Blvd). The restaurant is spacious and nicely decorated with a variety of booths, tables and bar high stools. The food that we had was great, although I would like to see some more 'healthy options' and 'vegetarian' menu items offered. The complimentary croissant they gave us was to die for -- very flavorful and buttery. The specialty coffee ordered didn't arrive until late in the meal, which wasn't the best timing. Overall this was a good experience! This restaurant is owned by a French husband and Vietnamese wife. Their cultures had a nice mix into the breakfast menu. My friend and I went for breakfast shortly after opening hours and initially were worried about the business due to it being relatively empty. We were 100% wrong. In 30 minutes or so, the place was packed and tables were full! Families and friends gathered with each other and all seemed to be enjoying their time at Heat Bistro. Our server was new - he stared it was his 3rd day. But he was kind and kept checking up on us. He had a couple issues with the ordering/technology, but also partly our fault for changing up the order. Plus, again, it was his 3rd day. I'm sure he will have picked up by now! Food was good and filling. What we saw in images did not do the serving sizes justice. We believe it is because the plates themselves are large, making the food look smaller and having more 'empty space'. We ordered fries, 2 different Benedict's, and pancakes. Linda and I stopped by Heat Bistro for brunch. Since this location only opened a couple of months ago, it seems like they are still working out a few operational issues. There was no host at the front, so the wait to be seated was longer than expected. It also appeared that only one server and one busser were handling the dining room. Adding a dedicated host and possibly a second server would help everything run more smoothly, especially during busy brunch hours. I ordered the ribeye sandwich with fries. It was okay, but the meat could have used a little more seasoning. The bread was also toasted unevenly, so a more even toast or a little butter would have improved it. Linda ordered the stuffed French toast with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, mascarpone cream, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. It looked very rich and filling. I also ordered three sausages and a side of bacon, and both were delicious and cooked to my satisfaction. Overall, we enjoyed our brunch. I came for brunch with some friends and my husband on a Saturday morning that happened to be my birthday. It wasn't too busy and I think they had recently had a grand opening. The decor and interior is modern and clean. We started with mimosas and the Dubai chocolate coffee. They had a good variety of flavors with some unique and Asian inspired ones. I got the lychee tropical blend which wasn't too sweet or too syrupy. It was a nice balance between all the flavors. My friend liked the Dubai chocolate coffee The menu had so much variety between sweet, savory, breakfast and lunch it was hard to choose what to order but we ended up getting the coconut ube pancakes, the brunch special tostada, the Saigon banh mi, and the chicken fried steak The ube pancakes had good ube flavor, and wasn't overally sweet, though a tad dry. I would maybe ask for extra sauce bc that was delightful. The pandan sauce they had was yummy too I didn't try the tostada but my friend really enjoyed it and said it was good My Saigon banh mi was a different take than other banh mi's I've had. The bread and veggies were different but it was super flavorful with the lemongrass coming out nicely. The chicken was still juicy too. I subbed regular fries for garlic ones and they were crispy with good garlic flavor that wasn't overpowering The chicken fried steak was solid, the only complaint is that the portion of the steak itself was a little small compared to fried steaks you get at other traditional breakfast places. We ended with their house lemon sorbet for my birthday. It was more whipped vanilla I think than icy lemon which I really liked. Just the right amount of tang without being too tart and the perfect palate cleanser. The service was a little slow but the staff kept us updated and were pleasant about it. This place was amazing! It was affordable and the portion sizes were HUGE! We got the mango coconut pancakes which comes with two eggs and a choice of sausage links or bacon. We also ordered the Grilled Chicken Salad which was surprisingly so flavorful and juicy that we didn't use the buttermilk ranch that came with it. The pancakes were fluffy and not too sweet. The pancakes were moist and bouncy! Super balanced and we didn't need syrup! It's a great casual brunch spot that isn't too loud. Lots of clean tables, booths, and chairs, and a patio area as well. The service is absolutely phenomenal. The owner, Sophia, came over to check on us several times, which we believe is a marker of a great establishment. The decor is beautiful - my favorite is by far the custom handmade koi fish light fixtures above the bar. I'd also love to have the lotus leaf fixtures in my own home. The food and drinks were exactly what we were hoping for. I got a matcha with ube foam, and my partner ordered a Vietnamese coffee - both of which Sophia made for us personally. UPDATE: They're officially serving dinner now, too! We heard they had just launched their brand-new dinner menu this week, so of course we had to head back in. And you guys, it was such a sweet, cozy, genuinely delicious evening. There is something about this little spot that I cannot help but root for. I do not want to call them "the little engine that could" because that almost sounds patronizing, but there is that same kind of heart here. You can feel how much care, perseverance, and love has gone into getting the doors open and continuing to build something special. Sophia is an absolute dream and truly one of the sweetest humans. Being there feels a little like someone's mom is cooking your favorite meal and making sure you are very, very well-fed before you leave. We started with their house-made croissants, which are not your traditional French-style croissant. They are more like an Italian cornetto, with the loveliest subtle orange-zest undertone. We had one plain and one filled with apricot, and both were warm, super delicious, and oh my gosh, I am still thinking about them. Next came the fondue with focaccia, which had such a fun little pop of flavor. Then we shared a couple of entrées, including the chicken piccata with angel hair, which was super delicious. But the curry, you guys. The curry was off the hook. It was beautifully forward on the peanut flavor, but every time I took another bite, it felt like I discovered a whole new layer of flavor. It was rich, comforting, interesting, and completely hit the spot. Ultimate comfort meal :) Then came macarons to officially end the night on the sweetest note. Josh, of course, was our server again after also taking care of us at brunch, and we absolutely love him. He is warm, attentive, super fun, and made the whole evening even better. I do not personally know the owners beyond getting to know them through our last couple of visits, but I genuinely cannot help cheering them on. I know they faced some obstacles while getting their doors open, and now it feels like they are finally getting their chance to bloom. There is something so special about watching a small, locally owned San Diego business grow, try new things, and pour so much heart into all the little details. Long live the independent neighborhood spots that make our communities feel like communities. Even though it was $7.50, I felt like it was worth it for the size and uniqueness of the drink. For entrees, we ordered: -Stuffed French toast ($21): it had 3 pieces of brioche, strawberries, and bananas with a side of mascarpone cream and syrup. This was pretty tasty, and the presentation was quite striking with the red platter. -House omelette ($17) which came with ham, bacon, sausage, Swiss cheese, bell peppers, mushrooms, and caramelized onions. There was a choice of hash browns or herb roasted potatoes, and we chose to get hash browns. The hash browns came out diner style, and had a crispy top. Unfortunately, the omelette seemed slightly undercooked inside, and a bit more time would have helped the ingredients cook through more evenly. My friends and I met for breakfast before going to the movies. It's relatively new so not many people know about it. I believe it opened last May. Quiet place and has these unique wooden lamps mounted on the ceiling. I ordered their signature omelette with hash browns and coffee. It was tasty! My parents and I came here on a Tuesday morning since I wanted to try a new breakfast place, and we were seated right away by the male co-owner. This place has beautiful decor and is very comfortable. The male co-owner took our drink orders after seating us. My parents asked for coffee and I ordered the lavender tea. My dad's coffee was filled only halfway and my mom's coffee was lukewarm. Not too big of an issue since our server, Bianca, filled it up from a fresh pot. We ordered the house omelette and steak omelette for our breakfast entrees and were happy with our choices. This was our first visit here and we left disappointed. We were seated as soon as we came in but that was the end of fast service. I really hope their service improves and their staff is trained better. Our waitress took my initial order and I let her know another member of our party was still deciding. She never came back after that. The food wait was about 30 minutes, but it seemed to be that long for everyone around us too. I wish there had at least been a "I'm so sorry, we're a little backed up right now." Instead we could all see the waiters and other staff talking or they'd all disappear. We were not checked on until I had to ask for the check. The food was alright, the eggs were a bit cold, but overall alright. Their prices were pretty average but a little on the higher end. I'd like to chalk my experience up to them being busy, but their staff was really underwhelming. Edit: The business owner is replying to reviews here and on Google, claiming any negative review is "fake". This is extremely unprofessional and distasteful as a business owner. Honestly, the menu offers a variety of items from around the world, including the delicious "Le Breakfast Burrito" I had for breakfast. The burrito was quite good. I liked that they put the burrito on the hoot griddle after rolling to firm and crisp it up. The burrito came with scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, Mozzarella cheese, and tomatoes. It comes with a side of green salsa or pico de Gallo, but they gave me both. I think they should offer both because it looks very nice on the plate. The ingredients tasted very good. The eggs were well scrambled and seasoned. The bacon was great. I just wish that the hash-browns would have held their crispy texture. The green salsa that came with the burrito was very good. It offered a slight heat and a lot of good flavors. The service was good, but I did not like that they do not take cash. I hope they change the policy. One of the employees had to run across the street to find change for a $50 bill, so I could pay the exact amount in cash, plus the tip. Our friends told us this place was having a soft opening, so we decided to try it out after church. For those of us old-time PQ residents who remember this spot as iHop, it's a pleasant surprise to see the spot resurrected so nicely! The interior is open, airy, and well-decorated with a nice French aesthetic. We learned they offer their breakfast/brunch menu all day on Sundays, so I had a prosciutto & oeuf tartine with fries and my wife had a chicken & Gouda omelette. They are still getting everything squared away, so we needed to get clarification on if fries or bread were included with the orders as it stated on the menu, but once we placed our order, multiple servers checked on us to make sure we were ok. The food was great-I loved my sandwich and my wife was happy with her omelette. The owner stopped by our table and apologized for us having to wait for our food as she said two of her cooks called in sick at 6:30am that morning, but we told her we hadn't waited long at all. She offered us two refreshers on the house, so my wife got a mango strawberry one and I got a lychee rose one. Prices were very reasonable and while they still need to dial in their processes, it's their soft opening and that's exactly what soft openings are for. We learned the owner used to live here in PQ and owns 3 other restaurants in Dubai, so nice to see it's a locally-owned place pop up here. She shared they had to navigate having 2 chefs call in sick this morning at 6:30am, so all told, they're doing pretty well in their first week. My sister-in-law, on the other hand, loves trying new places, so she convinced me to give this one a chance. Zero Service. Literally Zero. We drove almost 20 minutes specifically to try this place. My daughter had her heart set on the Ube pancakes and we were genuinely excited. What followed was one of the most frustrating dining experiences we've ever had, and we didn't even get to eat. We were seated immediately, no wait at all. The busboy brought waters quickly and was kind enough to answer my question about making the kids' pancake in Ube. That was the last interaction we had with any staff member. For 20 minutes we sat there, watching more than half the restaurant sit empty while the wait staff stood around talking to each other. Not one person came to our table. We've dealt with bad service plenty of times. But never NO service. Not a single "welcome" or "someone will be right with you." Nothing. On our way out, a man by the door cheerfully said "Thanks for coming!" We told him we had been sitting for 20 minutes without anyone waiting on us. He looked at us with a blank, shocked expression and just let us walk out. No apology, no effort to fix it. Super disappointed. My daughter left without her Ube pancakes and we left hungry. Fixed after I mentioned something Ube pancakes come with 2 eggs (any style and sausage or bacon) ordered sunny side up. Orders Sunny side up and chicken sausage. Received fried egg and pork sausage. Was also charged $3 for chicken sausage which again was NOT chicken. When asked for sunny side, was given ONE egg French toast. Bananas and strawberries were old and not fresh . (See pictures) Chilequeles - ordered a $10 extra "ribeye" medium with pink - received flat steak overcooked (see pictures) Also a pet peeve when they bring the credit card machine to the table and stand there while you look at the bill so they can see what you tip. However, the Business Manager, Karen H., replied to my review with false claims, false information, and so much hate towards the Yelp community. Therefore, I am updating my review to 2 stars after Karen's response. I also looked through the other reviews she commented to and her responses were all completely unprofessional. The friendliness and kindness I received during my visit must have been all a show in the moment, but their true colors come out in these distasteful responses to reviewers. We got an assortment of breakfast items to try for our first visit. The ambiance and decor is nice and clean and the staff was very nice. The presentation of the food was lovely and the potatoes were great! I was satisfied with my strawberry french toast but we didn't realize the basic french toast would have syrup already on it and my guest wanted it plain. We thought it would be like the pancakes and not have any syrup until we pour it on. We didn't say anything because there's no way to fix it except re-making a fresh batch but it was within a half hour of closing and we didn't want to make a fuss. My guest scraped off the syrup but didn't eat much since she only wanted butter on it without syrup. I would give a higher rating if my guest had been as happy as me. They also add these little crunchy red pepper corns that give this a unique texture. Roasted small tomatoes on the vine too! Wonderful! I can't even say how the food is because we left. After waiting over 45 minutes to be seated we took off. The manager was so incredibly rude to everyone he spoke to. We assume the older white guy with the glasses was the manager. The place seems to be extremely understaffed. There were customers that had tried signaling to staff multiple times to checkout. Finally they got up and said they'd been waiting 45 minutes to leave and they still weren't helped right away. I've worked in several cafes and can say that they need more staff, better organization and management. I was looking forward to trying something but after this I don't think we'll try again. The ambiance was light and bright. They had lovely murals on the walls and it was well lit. Looks like they're still getting things set up outdoors as they had new plants and outdoor furniture that wasn't all together. First impressions I would go back...the interior is very well done, they have both full and half boots...4 stars...plenty of parking...4 stars...now for the food...I ordered the Turkey pesto crapes which came with a side of pesto sauce and topped with slices of avocado. My wife introduced me to this restaurant after she had breakfast with her friends. She spoke endlessly about the ube pancake, the atmosphere, and the friendly owner. So she brought me there today. I personally wanted to leave after your lack of service and grossly negligent and rude treatment. I lost my appetite so did not order brunch. My daughter ordered the crepe which she asked me to try. I do not think the food or service is worth the trouble of a repeat visit. You just reinforce that with your response to my original review which was a fair assessment of my experience. You will get many more negative reviews. Hopefully you learn to respond with emotional and business intelligence. DO NOT COME HERE! Got on the wait list and waited for an hour. Hostess seated parties who came in after us and were not even on the wait-list. The managers' disingenuous apologies did not make up for poor service or poor communication. Update: don't be fooled. The owner updated her responses to all the recent 1 star reviews. The initial responses were extremely rude. Will not be returning. I understand it's a holiday weekend, but the bare minimum service was not even given. We also arrived when it wasn't even super busy. We waited 20+ minutes to get our order taken and the only reason they took our order was because my husband got up to complain. Who knows how much longer it would've been if we didn't say anything. When our food arrived, they didn't automatically provide utensils. We had to ask for it and I saw this same issue with the other tables around us. The table behind us didn't even get their coffee until they were paying the check and they ended up taking it to go. We also had to get up to ask for to go boxes and for our check because no one came by. So yes it's a holiday weekend but make sure you are properly staffed for the crowds and that your employees are also trained. If you want to try this place be prepared to wait and to get up from your table to get anything that you need. The hostess may not even be at the front to greet you and get you a table, you'll have to go in to find her too. read more
