They're building their new factory here in SF! Currently it's in Sausalito...It's kind of fun to peek at the progress. There's also a Blue Bottle inside/next door. This place is spacious and really nice to peruse through. The plates all make me oooh and aaah. They also have their handmade tiles here for a customized bathroom. All I got was the airtight German Weck glass jars, great for making preserves and such...I'm using it to store coffee beans. read more

When I first stepped into Heath I loved it. The pieces are really beautiful and well curated. I loved it so much that I added Heath products to my wedding registry. We received many products from Heath as wedding gifts and have now had them a little over one year. Slowly and surely the pieces have started to break. It started with a mug that cracked in half. We were told not to put hot water in the coffee mug. We tried our best to follow that request, but sadly another mug cracked in the exact same way. The plates are still in tact but they have not worn well over their one year of use, with many scratches showing through the glaze. Sadly, it seems these pieces are more special occasion pieces as opposed to everyday use items. read more

Simple, beautiful, durable, and overpriced stoneware. Take one design, release it in a slew of "designer" colors and charge too much for it, that's Heath. You're buying the name more than anything else. It's stoneware to impress the guests. Don't get me wrong, it's nice stoneware, it's well crafted and feels substantial, but $20 or $30 for a single, mass produced, solid color tea cup or a salt cellar is bordering on ridiculous. Hmmm, do I buy a dish set or pay the mortgage this month? Decisions, decisions. It is of course a beautiful little shop and it's fun to poke around. Go ahead, splurge and buy a cup or two, just don't drop it...like...EVER. read more

When we entered the store, I asked a question of the person at the front desk, and was treated so poorly that we left the store buying nothing. Today was my first time to visit this location. I've been familiar with Heath for decades and lived close to the factory in Sausalito. This particular Heath is wonderful - beautiful space and very pleasant staff. I plan to go return soon. Heath harkens to local, artisanal traditions and this space combines the past with the new and an attempt to mingle community with their practices. I have collected Heath plates, mugs, bowls for years...even scored a gorgeous vintage set from a antiques shop. On the coldest nights in San Francisco, it's the Heath bowl I put the soup in so I can cup my hands around it. I have also attended workshops, conferences and their fairs and can attest to the "mingle community" that Heath offers in addition to selling their ceramics/stoneware. It's worth the visit(s). read more

i waited a long time to come to this Heath Ceramics. i promised my mother i would go with her so we could share our first time together and i stuck to my word. she and i walked around wide-eyed with our wallets salivating so naturally we had to come back the following day without my dad so we could do some real spending. and as a result, i have now started my very own collection of Heath Ceramic dinnerware. thanks mom. i mean, i only have one place setting right now but that's not the point. the point is that it has begun. the store is absolutely beautiful. you'll want to touch everything and buy even more. it may take me months and months to complete my full set of dinnerware, but it will be worth it. read more

Trying to get their team to respond is difficult and they agree - they dislike the site as well. Lovely store, and, of course, the most amazing ceramics since Fiesta-ware in the 50's. I have bought scores of pieces from the Sausilito incarnation of this wonderful company. But the San Francisco store, lovely as it is, feels like walking into Lush (the cosmetics stores) - you can barely begin to appreciate the beauty of the merchandise before you are given the hard-sell treatment by one of the "ladies" (there are no male employees) on the sales floor (and I use that term advisedly - it feels like a department store, NOT Gumps, NOT Williams-Sonoma). It's too bad. The product speaks for itself - there is little need for this hard-sell approach. I love going to this outlet to check colors, new products, etc., but I always end up ordering on-line. Who needs the pressurizied sales tactics, more appropriate at a discount shoe-store? read more

As a tourist with my family we were profiled and followed as we walked around the store, so we left. To give you the scenario, my mother in law in a transport chair because of her ailing knee, my 4 year old and my wife. Dressed casually and we are an Italian family from Manhattan with zero threat. I watched the employees that interacted with us, one girl made a expression of "what do I do" before she asked if we needed help, and then we told them we were going to eat at Tartine Manufactory, then they had a sense of relief and 3 times explained how to get back to the entrance. Another girl behind the counter told us twice the best route back, ending with, "is that okay?". Then we said we are going to look around and as we walked around, the girl who tried to steer us towards Tartine's entrance walked from behind he counter parallel to us and glancing over to us, in an unsuccessful inconspicuous manner, then the stock boy walked into the area we were shopping, started fixing the table of dinnerware that was already perfectly arranged and required no touch ups, another unsuccessful inconspicuous attempt to watch over a customer in their store they profile as a threat. Or, again, they make it obvious to make the customer uncomfortable so to leave. Well, obviously this will not deter you from shopping here, and this is not meant to be that, but I'm making a point of profiling of individuals who think or believe they are above others in this society. Profiling is a natural human tendency, but a fine individual knows how to handle themselves and not make it obvious to others and not react so quickly. Beautiful minimalist ceramics and other tableware. They have beautiful tiles and plates, bowls, cups as well as linens and silverware. They also have a small newsstand. The goods are beautiful though a bit expensive. read more

The place is gorgeous and most of the items are as well. I love the coffee stand in the area and it's just a nice, airy little space. It is rather spendy though but it's nice to get something that isn't mass produced. Just a fyi: If you are considering getting a mug without a handle, be sure you have thick, workman hands because it's going to be hot. I don't even put the mug in the microwave. Just filling it with a hot liquid renders it incredibly hot to hold. Too hot for me. read more

Big fan of Heath Ceramics! When you first arrive, you can tell this is FOR REAL. There's a Blue Bottle Shop on the premises on the west end, the cavernous factory for tile-making in the center, and the delightful shop on the east end. If MidCentury is your thing, Heath is a must visit stop. They also do a fantastic job of displaying their wares, not something I can say about most ceramics shops. The super stacks of plates and bowls is inspirational. Everything they have serves as the best type of inspiration. read more

I just got a set of Heath dinnerware (Coupe line in linen), and I LOVE it. I feel like I want to bring the pieces with me wherever I go, so that I never have to eat off of or drink out of anything else ever again. They have a wonderful feel, and a simply stunning look. I received my first Heath dishes for my wedding. We will be celebrating our 40th anniversary this year! Over the years a few have been broken. For my birthday my husband replaced the missing pieces. One of the bowls arrived chipped. I sent the order info and a picture of the bowl to customer service and within a few hours I received a reply asking for an address confirmation so they could send out a new bowl! Tot 3 lb soup pot that set you back $150 is traveling to the wedding shower with you in a flimsy unattractive brown box that it does not fit!!! 1 inch of the box top cannot be lowered. Then ugly shredded paper (cheap) obscures the dish and makes a mess. But the real topper is string to attempt to hold it all together. Recycling/green the motive? For a supposedly high design line they fail miserably at presentation. Going green is not ugly. read more

My experience with Heath Ceramics was very mixed. I bought $1000 worth of dishware, and it is beautiful. Getting it to my home in Oakland was another matter. They use UPS, and their service was atrocious. It took 18 days for them to deliver the goods from SF to Oakland. They refused to give me a window for delivery more specific than 9am-7pm; they refused to deliver on weekends or let me reschedule delivery; they gave me conflicting information when I called customer service; and they ultimately delivered my package to the wrong address. The worst part was that when I returned to Heath today to explain how bad UPS was, they basically said "that's not our problem" and had a dismissive attitude. I would never use their delivery service again. And they should take responsibility for contracting with such an inept service. read more
