Headed out to Hondo for some BBQ last weekend. Heavy's was listed in the Tx Monthly top 50, do we wanted to give it a try. Despite the "outdoor" in the name, they have ample seating inside. The service was very pleasant. You stand in line & order from the "butcher", who preps to order. I asked for some burnt ends of the brisket, and they were very, very good. The brisket otherwise was average. The turkey however is worth every penny & a return trip. The sausage was pretty good. Their potato salad is unique. I really liked it. The green beans were bright green & yummy. NOTE that the Yelp hours are wrong. They are NOT open on Monday. I'm submitting a pic of their door with hours & request to Yelp to fix this. read more

I ate at Heavy's on a Saturday and all I have to say is my brisket and rib plate was among the best I have eaten. Very satisfying! Great portions and the potato salad beans were tasty! I liked how the servers pay attention to trimming the excess fat and their meat was not over cooked. The brisket was not over seasoned and not over smoked as some others contend. The ribs tender, moist, and delicious. I can say I ate in Lockhart recently at Kreutz and my meal at Heavy's was by far better than Kreutz. My meal was also less expensive. The staff were friendly and customer oriented. I will definitely be going back. I like that they support local meat markets; their sausage is made at Pollock's meat market in Falls City, TX. We had driven by Heavy's many times on our way through Hondo and thought, "Well let's give this Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ" place a shot. The restaurant is very clean and with a uniquely Texas style decoration. Very inviting. The food on the other hand can be described in two words: Extremely underwhelming. Both my wife and I had sliced brisket with cream corn and green beans. The brisket was tough, with very little smoked flavor. The sauce didn't add any noticeable flavor to the brisket. The sides of green beans and cream corn were very bland as well. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but I don't believe we'll be stopping by again anytime soon. read more

I don't have too many reasons to go to Hondo, but I had one recently and used it as an excuse to try out a BBQ joint that has been on my radar for the past four years. Heavy's BBQ isn't just a local favorite in a small town; rather, it has quite the statewide following and has been written up in many a publication included the much lauded Texas Monthly where it currently holds a spot in the magazine's Top 50 BBQ joints in the world (meaning Texas). With such high praise, my friends and I decided to take a little detour and try it. Heavy's meets its extraordinary expectations. While the Texas triumvirate is certainly brisket, sausage, and ribs, I have to say Heavy's had some surprisingly good turkey as well which doubled as an extra flavor agent for their green beans. Speaking of sides, the potato salad here has a subtle German twist and is rather magnificent. But if you are here for the brisket, you will find a product that probably best resembles what you will find at Micklethwait in Austin. Namely, the brisket has some pull, it has a nice consistent bark, and there is a noticeable red ring. For those of you who don't like the consistency of moist brisket, Heavy's is probably a good bet for you. But in any event, this has some solid brisket. Overall? I'd definitely come back possibly as a trip extension from Castroville or just to experience the BBQ a few more times. read more

This was a busy, delicious find! The long line and limited parking spoke volumes. We ordered their sausage, turkey, frito pie, green beans and potato salad. Everything was so good and full of flavors. However, the sauce was a tad thin for me. I especially enjoyed the potato salad that was mayo based without mustard, yum! Finally! Excellent BBQ and maybe even 4.5-stars, but still hard for me to give them 5-stars even though I badly want to as its a local place for me (me being from Del Rio, but live in NYC now). Solid solid BBQ and best within a 120-mile radius, but I still think Franklin's in Austin has the best brisket, Pappy's in St. Louis has the best pork ribs, and Kreuz in Lockhart has the best sausage...all of which are 5-stars in my book, which means that I have to give Heavy's 4-stars, but still impressive as I'm comparing them to the best in the country. Brisket: 4-stars, excellent flavor but slightly fatty and wish the smoke ring would've been a little thicker. Sausage: 4.5-stars, almost as good as Kreuz's. Pork Ribs: 3.5-stars, very good, but hard when I compare them to a place like Pappy's in St. Louis where the meat falls off the bone much easier. Cole Slaw: 4-stars, very good with a unique mustard sauce. Pinto Beans: 3.5-stars, better than most places, but not the best. Peach Cobbler: 4.5-stars, so tasty and homemade, but think they used canned peaches instead of fresh ones, but still beautifully made. Drinks: 5-stars, love the free refills of excellent unsweet tea, sweet tea & lemonade, so I can make my own combination of each. Ambiance: 4-stars, love the huge wood tables, no-frills service and smokey smell of the place. Overall, a solid 4-star, maybe even 4.5-star BBQ spot in the Real Texas (small town, not big city Texas), where trucks, boots and hats are not a "look" for hipsters, but an actual way of life. read more

Holy Smokes! In this case mesquite! I had this week to pull my Lyfetyme trailer smoker (35 years young) from here in a Fort Worth to it's birthplace in Uvalde for a makeover. I had BBQ on my mind and had my eye out between San Antonio and Uvalde for a BBQ lunch spot. Passing thru Hondo at 11:20 or so I saw Heavy's. There were already a bunch of cars and trucks. Two hours later on the way back the place was surrounded by vehicles at after 1:00! I'm thinking, there's gotta be something to this. Well, I'm a genius. The BBQ here is off the charts. I judge a BBQ joint by what it does with the Holy Trinity...brisket, pork ribs, and sauce. Kreuz, you flunk for your "no sauce" cop out. Get a life and figure out a sauce. So all I ordered here was 1/4 lb of brisket and three ribs. I asked for a cut from the fatty end. Brisket? Perfect. Juicy, tender, perfect smoke. Tasty burnt ends. Ribs? Perfect. Moist, still firm, pulled off the bone perfectly. Perfect smoke. Sauce? To die for. This is the ultimate, quintessential Texas type BBQ sauce if you ask me. This is what my Czech BBQ mentor, Junior Janecka of Decatur, Texas taught me. Thin, a consistency like Half & Half, or just a tad thinner. Vinegar based with just a touch of heat and a hint (if I'm not mistaken here at Heavy's) of cumin. FYI, I drank the last of the sauce from my sauce cup. Ambrosia. The BBQ sauce of the gods. I can't comment on the other food they do here but that is inconsequential. Forget about it. You don't need it. I suspect it's good as this is clearly a store that cares about what it does. But who has room for it after a quarter pound of brisket and a few ribs? And this will just bust your wallet at a whopping $5.98. Haha. Awesome. We've been trying to find a legit BBQ joint for quite awhile and this is it. It appears to be a mom and pop place that caters to the locals and out of town folk. The decor is rustic and whimsical. Had to drive in from San Antonio to check this out after seeing it in Texas Monthly. Customer service was great. I'm a bit of a BBQ junkie and so was shocked at how low the prices are as it relates to the quality of the food. Got the three meat plate with brisket, ribs and sausage. The servings are geberous. I loved the brisket. It was very tender and the ribs were also a winner. I didn't like the sausage as much but it's likely more of a personal preference. I'm a really big fan of the Lockhart sausage and this is definitely a different taste. A lot has been made about their choice of using mesquite but I thought it was tasty. Will definitely go back. Would also recommend the potato salad and the cobbler. read more

Brisket, Ribs, Turkey were sampled in our lunch stop. The turkey was salty, but well smoked. Ribs were fall-apart tender and perfectly seasoned. Brisket IS Texas BBQ and Heavy's needs a Lone Star stamp. It was SO good. Skip the sauce just to stay clean, or get it because it's sweet+spicy+saucy. Potato salad looked good but I prefer creamed corn and was happy to have it. Stewed green beans with tomatoes and lots of black pepper finished the plate. Went here because it's on Texas top 50 barbecue list. The people are super friendly here and I think that outweighs the barbecue. The brisket was a little dry, the sausage is delicious, the turkey was a bit dry as well. We got ours to go and did not ask for sauce but I feel like this is a place that doesn't have any as I didn't see any on the tables. Definitely worth a stop in if you're in Hondo Texas. We stopped in God's country, AKA Hondo, to try this former top 50 BBQ in Texas winner. It definitely made my top 5 bbq, and they'll be seeing plenty of me in the future so I hope I made a good impression. The owner & crew were personable and clearly take pride in their product. Turkey was smokier and juicier than I thought possible for it's kind. I enjoyed the smoky thick cut brisket on my plate, my wife's plate as well as my son's sandwich which was served on a pillowy soft bun. If you were in Heavy's at this time and I took some from you, then I apologize. The bbq sauce was peppery, semi-sweet, and mildly tangy which did the job. The chicken was fall off the bone tender & finger lickin. The Frijoles were heavy on the pepper and passable which is all you need in this type of place. The potato salad was a mustard/mayo combo w/ finely chopped veggies to freshen up the feast.
