Just left I got a two meat plate. To say the servings are gigundus is a MASS UNDERSTATEMENT. The meat was so tender (not joking) all I did was set my knife on the meat and it came apart. Recently visited Heavy's and we got some brisket, ribs, frito pie, potato salad and beans. The brisket was delicious, very tender and easy to eat. The ribs were good, I think they were a bit on the dry side but nothing the delicious bbq sauce didn't fix! I recommend trying the frito pie, very good and served hot! The beans were delicious! 9/5/14 12:16pm - I was six days too late to run into Daniel Vaughn eating at Heavy's. I did not eat the same BBQ he did. This was once the location of McBees, which made top 50 back in 2008. The name may have changed but the quality has not. I scored Heavy's a 90 out of 100. This is Grand Champion Texas BBQ. Smoke: Mesquite. Well I knew I would run into this sooner or later. The combination of a gasser and wood fired pit. The same two twin pits that made McBees famous are still in use today, but behind them is a Southern Pride. I am guessing the briskets start out in the pit and spend the night in the gasser. Around 145F the smoke ring process stops and so does smoke flavor. At this point your pit becomes a oven. Only bark and fat benefit from the smoke past this point. Brisket: Excellent. Top 50 quality. A 5/16in impressive red smoke ring underneath a big black bark. Near perfect tenderness, silky and moist. Smokey fat rendered well. Full smoke flavor with a salty rub. No sauce needed. Ribs: Very Good. I wished these ribs tasted as good as they looked. They scored high on tenderness but lack of flavor hurt. A bronze bark with pink meat. A soft bite left a clean bone. Near perfect tenderness. The seasoning was visible but all the flavor had vanished. Surprisingly very little smoke flavor (gasser ribs?) These ribs only had one flavor, pork. Use the sauce. Sausage: Excellent. Anytime I see a smoke ring in a sausage, I get a little excited. At first bite I knew this was a winner. A beef/pork mixture with bold traditional spice. Just enough salt to makes it pop with flavor. The garlic and pepper leaves a long lasting aftertaste. No sauce needed. According to DV's article, they purchase this sausage from Pollok's Market in Falls City, Tx. Its a fifth generation recipe dating back to 1854. A fabulous link and a real connection to the old world. Sauce: Good. An average thin tangy sauce that does the job. This place was GOOD! Tried it for the first time recently when we were passing through Hondo. Ordered a family pack which came with brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, and bread. Meat was delicious! I did not like the potato salad or beans. Prices are very reasonable and on par with most other BBQ joints in SA. Staff was friendly and helpful. Minus a star is because I was pretty disappointed that while we were eating dinner that one of the employee's 2 year old was running around the restaurant screaming and crying for the entire time we ate dinner. I couldn't understand why she would let her kid scream and cry while running throughout the restaurant as people eat. Stopped by on the way to the Corn Maze for lunch. I had the Frito pie and sampled some sausage, brisket, and ribs from my husband's plate. I thought it was all in all solid, but not mind blowing. The brisket was a nice mix of fatty and lean, and the sausage has good flavor. The pork ribs I was less impressed with. While they weren't bad, they should have been more tender in my opinion. The Frito pie was tasty, and I enjoyed the meal. Definitely not a bad deal if you are in the area and in the mood, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try it. read more

Drove in from town to try this place out. Definitely worth it! The prices were fair and for the price you get A LOT of food! I got the two meat plate, and for $8 or so I got the most tender fall apart in your mouth brisket and falling off the bone ribs. AND some kick ass Cole slaw and potato salad. I loved the decor inside the place too. Obviously they put the majority of their work into the bbq, but they also made the place feel very homey and comfortable. Best damn BBQ I've had in a long time. The brisket just melts in your mouth, not to mention it's covered in the most delicious BBQ sauce. The pinto beans are the best beans I've ever had. Oh man, my friend Heavy and family that own and operate this place are spot on when it comes to great Texas BBQ. I've been out of state for a few years and today was able to stop in and not only see my friend Heavy, but have some great BBQ. I got the star treatment and was able to sample almost everything but my tummy was too full to ask for more. Great Ribs, Brisket, Sausage and a couple of sides. Just so everyone knows, they are closed Sun and Monday and at times run out of select items when it's busy. You would think that 25-30 briskets would be enough on some days but unfortunately it happens. Heavy and family love what they do and they love their community. I believe it's been some 15 yrs now and watch your GPS, the sign out front an original from way back only says BBQ. Sausage is good and brisket is on the lean side. The pork ribs are on point! I didn't try the turkey. All in all too much pepper for my taste. The pepper is in literally everything! The sides need work I didn't care for them. Drink selection could be better you can have water , tea , or lemonade. There was one desert option. read more

Food: Good barbecue. Brisket was tender, as was the rib meat. And the sausage was very tasty. I also enjoyed the sauce, which complemented the meat, but didn't over power it with sweetness. Service: They only offer counter service. There was a younger guy that seemed interested in providing customer service. The other man (think it was the owner) and lady seemed completely lacking in personality. Not the best business people. They weren't rude, just not very engaging or talkative. If they are reading this right now, smile a little more. It'll go a long way with your customers. Prices: This is where Heavy's shined the most. Their three meat plate was only $11.50. And for that price you get a lot of meat, along with two sides. In my opinion, very fair prices for the amount of and quality of food that you get. Summary: This is a solid barbecue place. I wouldn't drive a hundred miles to eat here, but if nearby I would definitely choose this over a chain place like Bill Miller's. Also, when compared to places like Rudy's, it's much more affordable for a comparable level of taste and portions. Will I go back? Yup. I got a pound of brisket and pound of pork ribs saturday on my way thru town. The brisket is always on point, I got a mix of fat and lean and some burnt ends. Just no way to go wrong with that. This was my first try for the ribs though, and they were hands down the best rib I have ever had, moist juicy greasy savory LOL whatever words you use for a great rib these were hit. My friend and I stopped by Heavy's on the way back to San Antonio from a day of gambling at Kickapoo and ordered a rib plate and a brisket sandwich plus just one rib bone (cause they looked so good). When I bit into that rib it was so tender and juicy...WAY well beyond my expectations. The brisket was the most tender one I've eaten in a while. Kudos to Heavy's. Yelp, their door, and their voicemail all said they were open on Sunday. I drove in all the way from Abilene to give Heavy's a try and they were completely closed. We arrived Sunday at 11:35 and there wasn't a soul in sight. All the lights were off, the parking lots were empty, and the pits weren't even fired up. From the looks of it, they weren't even prepared to be open all day. I scheduled my trip, going out of my way, to drive to Hondo to try and check Heavy's off of my Texas Monthly Top 50 passport. Too bad they decided to not show up for work. I am very disappointed. I don't know if I will ever be back, who knows maybe they will decide to skip work on my next trip too. The least they could have done was put a note on the door so we at least we would know what was going on. read more

Ordered two plates of two meat. First off they started trimming off all of the fat from the brisket without first asking if we wanted it trimmed. Which we did not. Got home with it and put a piece of the sausage in my mouth, and yuk! It was dry and had a funny taste to it. It was dry there was NO pink color to it at all. When I say dry, it was almost like dried sausage ( jerky style). The brisket was dry as well and was so smoky tasting that it was all you tasted,.. was the smoke. I will say the potato salad was very good! Beans were ok. Don't see us going back there again. I would rather drive 32 miles to Bandera and get bar b que at Chicken Charlie's bar b que trailer. The only thing I wasn't to fond of was the potato salad. In my opinion it had too much pepper. But I'll still give this place a 5 because we really enjoyed our food.
