2 meat plate and 2 sides

Great BBQ and service! Order at the counter and pick up right after. They run out fast so come early. They only had brisket and sausage left when we arrived around 3pm on a Saturday. Both were tender and juicy. I had side of green beans and creamed corn. We also had the Frito pie. It looks small but they pile on chopped brisket and beans. Price is good for quality and quantity of food. Will need to come back early to try the rest of the menu! No room for dessert.

Been trying to finish this damn review since 2017 when they made Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ joints. Everytime i go to Eagle Pass, I drive through here. And I stop every single time. Had pretty much everything on their menu but my faves are the frito pie, the Heavy D, their beans and their smoked chicken. The frito pie is made with burnt ends and their beans and cheese and served in the frito bag. Delicious. Add jalapenos for good measure. The Heavy D is similar but they add chunks of beef and sausage topped with beans and sauce add the extra fritos and jalapenos to ensure you able to share (or not) Their beans are exceptional: peppery and with small pieces of brisket. Their chicken is smoked to perfection with the crisp skin lightly dusted in salt and pepper. Biting into that chicken just takes you to another place. A place where you're happy and puppies remain puppies forever. Make a day out of it and go hit them up. Totally worth the money and drive.

2 meat plate with Mac and cheese and potato salad

Wowza, worth the drive. This is the Wednesday lunch special at Heavy's in Hondo. 2meat plate includes 2 sides and tea. I chose the pork ribs and brisket. Very good, loved the potato salad. $14.95. I bet there's half a pound of brisket under those ribs. -- eating lunch at Heavys Bbq.

This was the rib membrane skin left from the back of the ribs. Not at all good when you are eating ribs.

2017's Texas Monthly BBQ Top 50 has not really lived up to the hype. I was a little disappointed. As you walk in the place is full of locals and passer by's. The meat is stored in a glass warmer under a heat lamp. Although the brisket looked promising it had a very nice bark on it. I asked the nice young man for some burnt ends to go along with my two meat plate of brisket and ribs. I picked the Mac and cheese with green beans. The brisket burnt ends was very fatty with a kind soft crunch. Brisket had a very strong oak flavor. The ribs were somewhat better. Nice flavor, but I was turned off by the membrane still stuck to it. The Mac and cheese was very underwhelmed with a flavor of generic box cheese powder mixed in a crock pot. Which is what it was served out of. The green beans tasted like they were once frozen and left to thaw in a pot with no flavor. Despite my taste shortcomings, the service was very nice and cordial.

Excellent BBQ and sides. I love the flavor provided by the tasty dry rub and the mesquite smoke. I was going to be in Hondo for a few hours so I did some research to find a good local place for lunch. Heavy's jumped out at me as a must try kind of place. I wanted to try as much as possible so i opted for the 3 meat plate. I had it with no sauce as I wanted to just enjoy the meat. Brisket, Sausage and Pork Ribs were my protien options. I liked all three very much and find it very hard to choose a favorite. Though if pushed my taste buds give the ribs a tiny edge. For sides I got the beans and potatoe salad and both are very solid accompaniments to the meat. Worth a trip to Hondo for!!

Full disclosure: I've visited more than three dozen Texas barbeque joints and I'm a pretty tough judge of BBQ. Having said that, lunch at Heavy's was a particularly disappointing end to an hour-and-a-half road trip. Heavy's definitely aims for the Texas rustic look, with heavy wooden tables and wild game trophies on the walls. The friendly people behind the counter bantered with the locals and served up generous portions of brisket, ribs and sausage at reasonable prices. So far, so good. The disappointment set in when I took my first bite of my sliced beef sandwich - tender, moist but almost no flavor. No pepper, no salt, no spice, no smoke. It was so bland that it reminded me of the pot roast meals of my Midwestern youth. I'm usually not one to sauce my brisket, but after a few unexciting bites I went back up to the counter to ask for a side of BBQ sauce. It didn't help. I also ordered a quarter pound of the beef & pork sausage. While better than the brisket, and a very generous quarter pound, it was on the dry and bland side. My companion had the three-meat plate with moist brisket, lean brisket and ribs. The lean brisket was tough and visibly dried out. The ribs were moist and meaty but lacking in flavor. In Texas, it's saying a lot that the highlight of the 3-meat plate was the side of green beans - bright, fresh-tasting and flecked with pieces of stewed tomatoes. The pinto beans were solid but unremarkable.

    Just don't...

We were greeted by the same friendly employee when I visited the prior week, and she gave us each a stamp punch card - after so many you get a freebie coffee. FYI they also serve smoothies, not posted yet, and they can make them dairy free! My friend and I shared a Rueben sandwich and chicken salad croissant. Great flavors, but for me the Rueben shined! Lots of flavor. $1 more. My decaf latte with oat milk ($2 extra) and sugar free Belgian cookie syrup was nice. The price for the oat milk was steep, I don't think I've ever paid that much extra. I may skip it next time and go for the caffeine free teas. I ordered a hippie bar and honey glazed pecans to go. I really enjoyed the hippie bar- peanut butter, gluten free oats, chia, seeds, and dried cranberries. Lots of seating inside. There's a conference room- free of charge for ministry meetings and a mic area up front. The owner stopped by our table and greeted us, I just love supporting this local fam owned business. Oh and when we visited the women's restroom... I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful sky ceiling and bird sounds. So soothing and relaxing... At 10:00 I called the store, no answer. I called until 10:20 am & all I got was a message saying the party I was calling was not available. So I got in my car and drove the 20 minutes to the Walmart store where the subway shop is located. I walked in and 2 ladies working. I had to get their attention, as they were not pay attention to a customer coming into the store. I asked whey they were not answering the phone. All they did was walk over to the phone and tried to see if they had calls. I told them it was too late so why check the phone?? Then I asked if I could get two sandwich trays made for a funeral. They said NO you have to give us 24 hrs. notice. So I said OK. do you have a tray of cookies. They said Yes, so I purchased the advertised tray of 36 cookies and paid for them. Said it would be 10 minutes. so did my shopping in walmart & on the way out stopped to pick up the cookies. they were not in a tray as advertised. They were in separate little bags in a larger bag. When I asked why the cookies were not on a tray the response was "we don't have trays" . Not an i am sorry or any sort of apology . When I got home to put them on a tray, they were all stuck together, as the ladies had taken them out of the oven and put them in bags while they were still hot. Needless to say I was not happy. So be warned that Subway has NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. If I could give less then a 1 star rating I would do so. It would be a minus 10.

If you know Matt Simmons, you know I like to arrive ahead of schedule. Gives me time to soak in the vibe of the place and, more importantly, work on a proper buzz. Got seated immediately, but I'll admit, it took a good 8 to 10 minutes before anyone checked on me. I was sitting there parched and looking like a forgotten extra in a cowboy movie. Once they spotted me though, things turned around fast. Service kicked in, drinks flowed, and all was forgiven. Still would've liked to sneak in a beer or two before I had to start fielding questions about my week at work. Normally I'm a Bud Light guy, but for whatever reason, this felt like a Miller Lite kind of night. You know you made the right choice when each one tastes like it's opening the door to the next. Menus were a bit of a letdown. Flimsy, faded, and borderline sticky. I went searching for fried mushrooms, but the print was so rough it looked like it said "Fred shrooms." A place with this kind of rep should fix that simple detail. Food-wise, I ordered the large pepper steak and took a trip to the salad bar. Gotta give props to the young gentleman working that station. It was spotless, organized, and clearly taken care of by someone who gives a damn. That salad bar had more hustle than some kitchens I've seen. The pepper steak, ordered "hot," packed a solid kick that had me nodding in approval. Not just spice for show, but real flavor that lingers in the best way. Final thoughts: clean place, friendly staff, no surprises on the prices. It's what you expect from a solid steakhouse experience. Not mind-blowing, but dependable, and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Four stars. One for each Miller Lite I wish I had before the table filled up.
