Hands down this restaurant was our best meal during our vacation on Kiawah Island. Apparently it has been around for about 7 years and is a real favorite of the locals. That said, this place is definitely more upscale than you might imagine when you first walk in so be prepared for prices that reflect really good food and wine and expert friendly service to boot. We walked in around 6pm right off the golf course and inquired about a reservation closer to 8:15. They were cordial and accommodating and even told us that at that hour, some of the specials like the soft shell crab might be gone. We asked if we could reserve one order for the entree and they willingly obliged and noted it next to our names in the reservation book. Can't beat this type of service! When we arrived at 8:15 we were promptly seated and the dining room was quite full (as was the bar room in front). Our female server was lovely and brought us Pellegrino and drinks right away. She suggested the rose which I thought was fantastic and the Sauvignon Blanc my husband had was really complex...delicious. We skipped right to the entrees and ordered the soft shell crab, the signature Asian style seared tuna in a broth with rice that was perfection. The sides here were also spectacular-the grilled lemon and garlic asparagus were enormous and beautiful. But the brussel sprouts were knock your socks off good-sautéed in a smoky olive oil sourced locally. This gave them the most delicious bacon flavor without the pork! Totally vegan...yum! Note: my husband orders soft shell crabs whenever they're in season and has had only two preparations in his life that he enjoyed. These were fried but the batter was light and let the crustacean really shine! Looking for a Pinot noir that would pair nicely with my tuna, I ordered the Sass 2012 which our waitress recommended and wow was that good. We even bought a bottle at the wine shop in the little fresh fields village on departure! Couldn't ask for more in the way of quality food, great value in terms of the portions which were huge, wonderful wine all served by folks who really care in a warm setting. Superbly prepared food and top notch service The fish of the day was Snapper grilled to perfection with a cauliflower risotto and it was delicious. Crispy crust and moist inside. I could have eaten a boatload of this fish but had to save room for dessert. Key Lime pie with a berry side made a fabulous finale. Worth every penny for a great last night for this visit to Seabrook. read more

We've been coming here since they first opened. The menu has changed slightly but the quality has never wavered. I love everything but it's one of the only places you can get liver and onions done in the classic French manner. Try everything. All fresh and beautifully prepared. read more

Unfortunately we were underwhelmed with the dining experience at Hege's. We had to wait over 2 hours before getting out entrees. The waiter was rude and slow. The food wasnt good either but very high priced. I dont reccomend Heges as there are much better options on Kiawah and Johns island. read more

Food was amazing. Started off with some appitizers. The Cajun cheesecake was the highlight, but, everything else was delicious as well. Entrees were great. I went out on a limb and had the calf liver. My wife had crab cakes. Nick, our serve was terrific. He was very helpful with the menu. He paired a wine with my wife's crab cakes, and, she loved it. We had an incredible meal here on our last night in Kiawah. We called the day before for reservations, and were seated promptly when we arrived. Just to be safe I would recommend calling for reservations, the restaurant filled up pretty quickly. Our waitress, Cynthia, was SO nice. She knew the menu and specials like the back of her hand and offered great suggestions and did not mind giving her honest opinion on what to choose. we both got the pre set menu - $37.95 for a app, entree, and dessert. This was a great way to go, we both already wanted what was on the selections. He had a delicious salad and I had the crab cake app that was out of this world ... not fried tasting or any breading, just yummy delicious crab in a sauce with more crab and a slaw that was good to. Hubby got the crab cakes for his entree and they were served totally different, in a red pepper cream sauce with asparagus and rice and it was equally if not better than my app. I had the fish of the day, a grilled mahi with veggies and rice. Oh, and the bread to start off the meal... I am not usually a big bread person but oh wow - the cornbread was amazing. For dessert, I had the profiteloes and he had the strawberry shortcake. Both were great. We enjoyed walking over here from the Marriot we were staying at. Would highly recommend going here to anyone, we will be back for sure. read more

I'm so glad we found this place. We are staying at the Sanctuary Hotel in Kiawah island and we just couldn't eat another meal there! Hege's has amazing service- our waiter couldn't have been nicer! I was feeling cold and kept bringing me hot water for tea. We started with an onion soup which was super flavorful but not heavy. I had the Grouper which was accompanied with some sort of rice and carrots- v delicious! My husband had the liver and v enjoyable. Real food and the place is very pretty and comfortable! read more

We had a party of six that had dinner May 20, 2021 at Hege's. The waiter tried to sell us a bottle of wine that averaged $250-$350. We had been at the PGA golf tournament all day and were all very tired. We just wanted a glass of wine and a nice dinner. The service was good and the meal was excellent. The problem was that when we received the bill they had added three cocktails and a bottle of wine which made an overage of over $126!! When we brought it to the servers attention, all is said was, I am sorry and redid the check. I expect that they are not use to having the customer review the bill. Please be careful if you ever go to Hege's, as I heard from a few others it had happened to them! This will be the last time that we will ever go to Hege's. read more

I first came to Hege's 8 years ago. I never wanted to go back but my in-laws booked a reservation this past week. I clearly remembered why I was so unhappy the first time. This place is over-priced, over-cooked and under-serviced. My fish of the day special was dry and the accompanying orzo was soft and gooey. My husband's mahi was so tough it was like chewing on a sponge. Dishes we all delivered to wrong guest, desserts took almost as long to arrive as the main courses did, water was slow to be refilled. These are all NOT acceptable at a place that charges $25+ for entrees. Do yourself a favor and spend your money anyplace but here. read more

Sad story here. Drove to Kiawah Island from S. FL. Made reservation several weeks ago. Hostess said we had stated no preference (inside or outside you would think?!?!?). She tried to sit us at the bar. Rude manager basically said they have a private party and are booked up. Take it or leave it! Said we would leave. He said he would see us next time. Hege's was very close to our hotel and able to accommodate us for early dinners without reservations. Mostly this review is for the service and Asian ahi salad which was refreshing and terrific. I would prefer a frozen pizza to their pizzeta. They serve fresh bread and cornbread. read more

So mad! I have eaten here twice before but this time we sat at the bar. No smiles from bartenders. Finally got the attention of the female bartender and got some menus, didn't ask for a drink order. The male bartender finally got our drink order and told us specials. Drinks were delivered and they never glanced our way again. We wanted to order food but couldn't get their attention and didn't feel like yelling. It was almost humorous - they would come to the end of the bar and NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT. It was nice that the male bartender gave us waters with our wine, but not that he had his fingers all over the tops of the glasses when he gave them to us. We finally left, after having to ask for the check. We were still hungry. Sad. read more

Finally found a place with attentive service and very good food in Kiawah. After trying three other places earlier and having lousy service and mostly so-so food, we went into Hege's with low expectations and pretty much ready to head into Charleston if this failed. For the first time all week, the hostess greeted us with a smile. At first, she reported that they had no availability for our party of six all night, but she was very kind and apologetic. As we headed back to our car accepting yet another failed restaurant experience, we were shocked to find this wonderful young lady running into the parking lot to inform us a table had opened up when another group cancelled their reservation. Exceptional for her to come find us like that. Our waiter was Dennis, and he was by far the most attentive server we have seen in the area. I had the lobster pan with assorted seafood. It was very tasty, but huge. Really better for two people. My wife had an outstanding grouper. The wait staff really busts it out here. Honestly it seems like a high stress environment, but they all were frantically working hard to respond to customers and do their jobs. I enjoyed being near the open kitchen, but I think Chef Hege noticed us watching and catching a few stressful moments the staff was having with a very large group in the other room. Dennis offered us she-crab soup while we waited and later presented us with a couple extra complimentary desserts. Nice touches. I wish I had gotten the young lady's name who initially greeted us and worked so hard to accommodate us. She and our server, Dennis, along with the great food provided our best, and thus far only great dining experience in the area. There are times when you eat a meal and you will remember it forever and tell everyone to go eat there. This was not the meal. I ordered the crab cakes. They came with some strange orange sauce on them, side of red rice and side of asparagus. I had to send the rice back due to being undercooked. Tried mashed potatoes instead. They were pretty good. Asparagus was overcooked. Possibly because the plate was piping hot ... Possibly from sitting under heat lamp for a while - but maybe I am just speculating. I just felt for the price of the meal ($32.00 plate) that it would be awesome. Oh well. My friends' food looked good. Tried a bite of the lobster and it was really tasty. Probably the best service I've had at a restaurant. Period. They were attentive to our large party (including little kids) without being hovering or intrusive. The food was fantastic! The pre-fix menu seems the best way to try things for your money. I would have eaten bowl after bowl of the She Crab soup if it was socially acceptable - it was that good! And the crab cakes with shrimp hit perfect balance of seafood for this out of towner's desires. Can't wait for the next visit! read more

This place came highly recommended by a family friend who is building a house on the island. It was hands down our favorite meal of the week. There were 4 of us. 2 got the pre fix, 2 of us got different seafood specials. We had a starter Caesar salad and Manhattan clam chowder, both generous portions and delicious. The entrees were all excellent! The two desserts we shared (molten chocolate and blueberry cobbler) were also amazing! Good wine, good bread (try the cornbread), good service. We'll be back. What a disappointment. The vibe I got from all the staff was at best unhappy, like everyone was a bit stressed and didn't really like working there. One guy working the back section of the restaurant looked downright angry every time he picked up drinks from the bar. I ordered one of the appetizer specials - Korean BBQ shrimp with "Kim chi vegetables"...it was OK but the pickled cucumber slices had nothing to do with Kim chi (I.E. not fermented and not spicy). Main course...1/2 a roast chicken with sauteed spinach. ($33.00) It was bad...soggy skin, breast meat that tasted like sawdust, the spinach looked like it was nuked. The bartender asked how is was , I said underwhelming, then corrected myself and said it really isn't very good. She did ask if I wanted anything else but I declined. I sat for awhile, not touching the food, and eventually she came back and asked if I would like a box. (Honestly, I'm not making this up.) Obviously I declined. Eventually I was asked if I wanted dessert. Again declined. The bill is presented, chicken is taken off but she charged me $8 for the spinach that I didn't eat, which I refused to pay for. Unfortunately, I saw her condescending look/rolling eyes in the bar mirror as she turned to make the adjustment. No apology from anyone, and the hostess ignored me on the way out. Clearly this is the result of the complacency that comes from a captive audience. Ranks as one of my top ten worst dining experiences. read more

We've been coming to Hege's every year when we visit and I've never been disappointed. The service is greatly attentive without being overbearing. The food has slowly shifted from what it used to be in terms of category. Not really a problem. In the last few years it seems to be adding a few Asian inspired options. The Asian salad has always been a favorite with the wasabi peas added. She-crab soup is always a classic, as is the wedge and escargot. Again, I have never been disappointed with my food, not has my family. Last time I had special Halibut. Seared perfectly with a perfect crunch on the outside and buttery on the inside. I also highly recommend the duck. While we have never done lunch or brunch I would love to try it out some time. read more

During a recent family reunion vacation on Seabrook Island, our group of 25 made reservations for dinner here and considering the challenges faced to please such a large party comprised of every age group, our dinner could not have been better. Big kudos to our host, Scott. He was extremely polite, prompt and professional as he took charge and directed the wait staff before, during and after our meal. The pace of the evening was consistent and perfect; at no point were was anyone in our party left wanting for anything or feeling neglected, nor did we ever feel rushed. No easy task with a party of 25! The food was fantastic. For starters, all our appetizers came at the same time and each was hot, fresh and delicious. I had fried oysters that were top notch and also tried the crab soup which was smooth, creamy, flavorful and rich without being too heavy. Following the apps, all of our dinners were also presented together and all were hot and fresh. I opted for a petit filet mignon myself and boy, was I glad I did. Cooked perfectly at medium rare (just as I asked), it was easily one of the top 3 steaks I've ever eaten. Excellent char on the outside and buttery, tender and soft throughout. The sauce boat served alongside the steak had an outstanding homemade steak sauce that perfectly complimented the beef. Wow. Timely and uniform service of our dessert followed where I had a perfectly sized slice of fresh key lime pie with a splash of raspberry sauce that really took it over the top. Not inexpensive, but if you're like me and you place value in high quality ingredients, careful preparation and impeccable service, Hege's is worth every penny. Highly reccommend. read more

We had dinner here on February 15, 2022. We had heard good things. It started out ok. Our server was very nice and we had drinks. After we ordered she disappeared. Our food came and the scallops I ordered were almost raw. I couldn't find anyone to ask to bring them back to be cooked. I had to get up and find someone. When I explained about the scallops they acted insulted that I would complain. They did bring them back to be cooked but by that time my husband had finished his meal which was the veal schnitzel, so basically we each ate alone. They did comp the scallops which were still under cooked when they came back. Very disappointed. I wouldn't go back. read more

No southern hospitality here!!!!! This is the conversation with the maitre d after waiting several minutes at the hostess stand: Q:" Hi, may we have a table for four outside?" A: "No, our outdoor furniture is purely decorative." Q: "Purely decorative?" (There were approximately 6-7 tables with four chairs around each so this was surprising.) A: "Yes, (with extreme attitude/sarcasm) why would you even want to eat outside it's 100 degrees out?!" The polite response to being asked to sit outside was to merely inform us that the restaurant was not serving outside that night. We are from upstate New York and did not find the heat intolerable especially as many other restaurants adjacent to this establishment were serving outside. If you would like to be seated with a smile or at least with common courtesy - make sure to take this off your list!!!!l We walked out. read more

We were looking for a restaurant near Kiawah and Seabrook Island that served something different. We never expected to find food as good as it was in Hege's. It's definitely a bit on the upscale, pricey side, but worth every cent. Make a reservation, as this place can get busy. And check the schedule, as they are not open every day. They have a nice area around the bar, as well as two dining venues inside. Service staff are well trained and very helpful. But the food? OMG. If you are visiting the area and want to splurge, you don't have to go downtown to get a great meal. It's right there, at FreshFields shopping center. They do cater to families who wish to dine together, and it's a great place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary as well. read more

Ther is NOTHING we didn't like about Hege's fro start to finish. We opted for the Prix Fixe menu and were all pleased with not only the quantity, but also the quality of every dish. Then there was dessert...fabulous and plenty of it. We will return before we head north again. read more

Best food in Kiawah Island area! Had 8 oz. lobster tail, house salad & blueberry cobbler. All were divine. The wine (Storypoint) recommended by our server also was heaven sent. Was only going to have one glass but loved it so I had two. My dinner companion had the she crab soup, 8 oz. lobster tail & a peanut butter and chocolate mousse. She was equally enraptured. Did I mention the cornbread? Shazam! It was our most expensive meal in our 10 days here but worth it. My only hesitancy is that none of the servers wore safety masks. Whereas all other eateries, grocery store, pharmacy...in Kiawah (06/11/2020) were very careful--social distancing, staff in face masks and some in gloves, limited numbers of customers...When I asked the face mask-less hostess, why the lack of precaution, she directed me to the manager/owner? He said something like face masks only work if everyone 100% of people wear them. And since not every person was wearing them, what's the point? I didn't argue with him. I had had two glasses of wine. But would have felt more comfortable if staff complied with CDC recommended protocols. read more
