Wow. First of all, this is a foodie's dream restaurant. The vibes are quiet French bistro with a great family feel. The menu is small, local, and teems with pride for great ingredients and cookery. Our server was thoughtful, sweet, clearly loves to talk all things food. I told her she needed to host a podcast for Food & Wine. Totally sold on the Monkfish and a citrusy NA. If you have dietary restrictions, they will accommodate and lead you down a delightful culinary path. The 12 oz monkfish is meaty and flavorful. Buttery with a slight hint of oceanic alkali. The toasted slivered almonds completely changes the dish. The sauce is silky smooth and balanced. God knows how much butter finished it! The rice pilaf as the side made sense for this denser, bone-in, chop of the fish. Though noticeably greasier than the brown buttered fish, it was delicious alone or to sop up some of the jus. We decided to have dinner here for the first time yesterday and were pleasantly surprised. This is a quaint place on upper King across from Melfi's. A decent size bar is upon your left hand side when you enter (though the half a dozen or so patio tables) Seating for another 30-40 people fills out the rest of the dining room. Tastefully done and comfortable. We started the evening with a couple of the Cremánts (one rose and one white) and began the meal with the steak tartare and the onion soup croquette. Think of the onions in French onion soup made into a ball and fried. It was good. Dinner continued with Spiced Duck Confit with lentils and foie gras and Rabbit en Croute, morel mushrooms, green peas, and artichokes. Both dishes were bursting with primary flavors and wrapped in many other subtle ones. We washed the deliciousness down with a bottle of 2023 Boillot Gamay Moulin-à-Vent, Beaujolais. A wonderful, yet restrained, red that paired well with both dishes. Dessert was a simple plate of warm madeleines with a bit of powdered sugar. A wonderful meal with excellent service. We had a perfectly splendid dinner here. The service was wonderful. The patio was charming-- it was a lovely evening so we chose to eat outside. Everything we ate was AWESOME! The pate and the croquet were great openers. The pate was definitely shareable but my 18 year old niece co-traveler was less interested in trying it. But none went to waste. Both of our entrees were delicious. The lentils were a bit unusual with the lamb but tasty. We were full but felt remiss if we didn't try a dessert so we got the lovely apple dessert to go. This one small block on King street likely has the best group of restaurants in all of Charleston, which is saying a great deal. The restaurant offers very limited onsite parking and since we were dining early we were able to nap one. When you walk in there is bar seating to the left, some very comfortable looking oval shape booths that look to seat about 4, and regular tables toward the black. The ceilings are high with a warehouse feel and painted black which seems to be the trend these days. Service was excellent, with just the right amount of attention. I started with Onion Soup Croquet. Think of a deconstructed French Onion soup that is about as unique of a dish as you can find. The dish starts with a medium size crispy Croquet stuffed with onion, and an onion soup broth and topped with lightly melted cheese. This is the a must dish. The wife ordered Octopus Bourguignon, which was Octopus, cavatelli, with a sofrito, bordelaise sauce. While I was not a fan as to how the Octopus and cavatelli played together, the sauce was deep, rich and frankly stunning. The wife and I split an order of Burgundy Escargot, with ramp butter, and baguettes. I like my Escargot the old fashion way smothered in just garlic butter, but this ramp butter was amazing. The wife's main dish was Diver Scallop Cassoulet. Although this was the least of our favorite dish, another unique broth still made this a very solid option. My main dish was the Monkfish Chop. This dish had a nice size piece of fish with a sizeable bone in the center (hence the term Chop). The dish included Almondine, capers, and brown butter jus that again was a fantastic paring to the meat. It also came with a side of Carolina gold rice which was a great way to soak up the brown butter Jus. Went to Maison for the first time. It's in a sort of weird location and parking is a bit tricky, but definitely worth the effort. Greeted at the door by super friendly staff, and then waited on by an excellent and very competent waiter. The decor is bistro rather than high end restaurant, but service and menu are high end. All of the staff went out of their way to make it a special evening. Due to it being my birthday, I received a complimentary glass of very nice sparkling wine. They have a marvelous wine list, well worth checking out. I had a wonderful seafood soup graced with black truffle that was a special for the evening. Smooth, creamy and it almost tempted me to engage in bowl licking. Yes, I restrained. My wife had the Onion Tarte Tatin, which I tasted. An excellent appetizer with a very gentle onion flavor. For the main course I had the duck leg confit with lentils. The duck leg was perfectly cooked and delicious. I have a bit of mixed feelings about the lentils though. They were tasty, but it was probably too much lentil and not enough other textures or flavors. It was somewhat difficult to combine them with the duck into a single bite, so read more like two separate dishes. Maybe I'm too much a traditionalist, but I prefer a bit of sauce on my duck. This may be a dish just a bit outside my comfort zone. My wife had the monkfish and it was much more successful. It was probably the largest piece of monkfish I've ever seen served, but cooked to a delicate, lobster-like taste and texture. The accompanying broccolini was excellent as well and retained a bit of fresh taste and texture. For desert we both went with the chocolate mousse. It was a large portion as desert mousse go, and very lightly chocolaty and smooth. The cherry toping was just the right compliment. A great treat that we will return to. read more

At the beginning of the month our girls night out dinner was here at Maison. One of the wins right off the bat is that they have a parking lot! Parking in downtown CHS is not a fun thing to do, so when a restaurant has parking I'll be adding a star just for that!!! The restaurant has a patio for outdoor eating when it's not the middle of summer and 110 degrees in the shade. Once inside they have big booths down the wall across from the bar and then another area with tables. We were sat in the middle big booth across from the bar. I thought it was going to be too loud to hear, but it wasn't. The only person I couldn't hear was our server. She was super sweet and knowledgeable but was extremely soft spoken. Luckily one of my friends with good ears picked up what she was saying! For drinks we all started with their G-Love. A great tequila cocktail. I don't remember the other cocktail I had, so it must not have been as delicious as the first. Since us girls love to share, we went with all of that evenings specials, a couple apps, a couple sides, and one entree. Everything was delicious. My favorite bites of the evening came from the tuna and heirloom tomatoes. Tomatoes are amazing this time of the year and the tuna was complimented by them perfectly. The escargot was warm, buttery and delicious on the toast point. And surprisingly to me, the field pea gratin was another favorite bite. I don't like peas, but this was not green, mushy, stinky, can peas that I vision when I hear the word peas!! It was far from that type of peas and was delicious. Had another incredible meal at Maison for my birthday! Allie, our server was so attentive, but gave us all the space we needed. I hadn't had the steak frites yet, so I decided to splurge and I'm so glad I did. Some places try to be classy, and some places just are. Such is the case of Maison in downtown Charleston. The restaurant exudes casual elegance with excellent friendly service from a dedicated staff who genuinely care about providing a top-notch experience. We specifically came on Wednesday for their much-touted burger, but I am getting ahead of myself. We started with cocktails that were both tasty and presented with great care. Being a bourbon fan, I went with the Bon Vivant which had Vodka, Cappelletti, St. Germain, and Lemon. The bourbon was very smooth, and the drink imparted a slightly fruity taste without being too sweet. My wife went with their most popular cocktail, the G-Love. It was made with Tequila, Rhum Blanc, Aperol, Salers, Lemon, and Grapefruit. the taste was light and refreshing with nice citrus notes. I am a huge French onion soup fan, so I absolutely had to get the Onion Soup Croquette. Don't pass on this appetizer as the crust was crispy and light, the inside filled with a thick rich onion soup that gives you that true comfort food vibe. In a word delicious! Since we came for the burger fries were definitely a must! The Clarified Butter Pommes Frites with béarnaise aioli were a stellar success being crispy and full of flavor. Of course, the burger was the star of the show with some of the most impressive list of ingredients. A all house made burger on a house made milk bun covered in duck fat and sea salt. There are two patties the first being a ground chuck and hanger beef patty and the second a duck sausage patty. It is then topped with caramelized onions, melted gruyere cheese, garlic aioli on the bun and finished with sauce bordelaise which is a red wine jus. It sells at the time of this posting for $18. It was almost hard to even refer to this as a burger as it ate like a gourmet entree. Earthy, rich, beefy, cheesy, a true Umami experience! Excellent French restaurant off upper King Street! My party arrived around 6pm on a Wednesday night. There are 5 or 6 reserved parking spots in the parking lot right by the restaurant (plenty of street parking close by if these spots are full). Wednesday night is burger night so I ordered the burger with a side of fries (served with a side of aioli). Both were excellent and I highly recommend! We were excited to try dinner after making a reservation at Maison. We were greeted promptly at the door and seated immediately. . We were seated in a booth near the door. There really is not a lot of space to get comfortable. The booth is a great idea. However, if you're carrying extra poundage, it's going to be a very tight squeeze. I found it to be a little uncomfortable. Our meal was beautiful, our waiter was fantastic. He made us feel comfortable, and he was very knowledgeable about the food and it's preparation along with the extensive wine list. He was very attentive, and checked on us frequently. I would give it 4.5 maybe go up to a 5 when we go back because we will. I have heard a lot about Maison and we were lucky to go on a wednesday which i knew was their burger night. We say at the bar - the bartender was fantastic - engaging, welcoming, explained each dish perfectly and gave us a lot of history of the restaurant. The burger was great - I had the tartare which i loved too. Not pictured are the escargot. My only gripe was i wish the burger would have come with pommes frites (which we did order and were terrific). Again, we will come back! After reading reviews of the french soup croquette I couldn't pass it up! YUM! It is soup in a crusty filling! I've heard they only make a certain amount so be sure to get your order in for one! For my entree, I went with the chicken cordon bleu. It was a perfect dish to follow the croquette. The best part was each little bite of chicken with the leeks, oyster mushrooms, and Dijon jus. Ate here on my first night arriving in Charleston. Place is small with limited seating indoors and the rest outdoors on the side. My friend and I got the last open table, every seat in the house was taken. We decided to try the French onion soup croquettes. These were so good, they should really offer a bowl of French onion soup. The flavor was so good. My friend got the mussels, which were probably the largest mussels I've ever seen in my life. This was a 3+ pound bowl that's served. I got the steamed flounder with potato-fennel pave and warm tartar sauce. This was DELICIOUS. The fish was so fresh, perfectly cooked, covered in such a nice sauce with olives and tons of capers. I've never eaten anything like the pave, but it was also so good. The waiter was very pleasant and accommodating and that is why I am giving it a star, if I could give zero stars I would but the service deserves at least a star. The mussels tasted very fishy and the "beard" of the mussel was not cleaned, the onion soup was sooooo salty that it tasted very packaged, finally the steak frites and the flounder were so old that after one taste you knew that these proteins have been sitting in the fridge for weeks! No wonder why they were not packed on a Thursday night unlike other places in town. Really a bad experience, which is too bad because the decor is spot on. Update! Unfortunately underwhelming. Given its price point, hard to recommend. Greatest strengths were the a) very professional service from our wait staff; b) modern decor; and c) parking. The chef isn't afraid of taking risks on French bistro classics - which I appreciate - but payoff simply was not there and we were left feeling it was culinary creativity just for the sake of being different but not necessarily better. The tartare was an exercise in bitterness and acidity, the foie gras could have been decent except it was paired with flaccid sandwich bread. Steak frites took a hanger steak cut yet somehow managed to make it denser/tougher and less beefy in flavor profile. Duck confit was good albeit aggressively seasoned (but somehow made it work), but came paired with chewy lentils in a thin but flavorful stock. The side salad was very good and perfectly dressed! As one visiting from out of town and sampling the excellent culinary offerings in town, sad to say we regret making a reservation here. Not recommended. read more

I know it's cliché but if this was served anywhere in France the chef would be quartered. There aren't many ways to do coq au vin, and shredding up a chicken and molding it into a cat can shape then plopping it on a Ben of corn is NOT how you try to interpret it. This is my second time here but sadly my last after this debacle. Embarrassed that I took my girlfriend here on her birthday for her to be treated like an alley cat by the chef. We wanted to love it. People were friendly and service was very attentive. I don't think my water ever dropped below a cm from the rim. The menu reads like mouth watering right up our alley, but unfortunately didn't deliver. Every dish we had was a bit off. We decided to try and share many plates, and nothing tasted particularly French, but rather French inspired. The best dish was the escargot and that was just okay. The ambiance was surface nice, but I thought the plastic framed poster art didn't quite jibe with the rest of the place and it certainly didn't align with the menu prices. Between the 2 of us we shares 2 apps and 2 entree which was the perfect amount of food and topped off with the perfect bite of chocolate mousse! Let's just say the first part of the evening here was on point - wonderful attentive service, delicious crisp French wine, all enjoyed in a charming atmosphere. It was early in the evening, so Maison was not yet full, but as we talked over drinks and perused the menu, tables started filling up and that was when the trouble began. Service was beginning to falter. Our appetizers including the escargot and the onion soup croquette were served promptly, but no one ever came back to inquire if everything was to our liking. The plump buttery, garlicky escargot were nicely prepared and plated. The croquette was bitter as it stayed too long in the fryer. When someone finally came to clear our appetizer plates, a young lady (not our server), asked if I was finished and I said yes because I didn't care for the burnt exterior. No reaction. Nada. Took the plate and left. Wouldn't the kitchen want to know why a patron barely touched a dish? By now the small space was a buzz with diners so individual attention from servers was waning. While waiting for our entrees, we decided we wouldn't be ordering desserts as planned, because by this time our cheery disposition was turning sour. Steak frites is such a classic French Bistro offering, yet this one didn't quite hit its mark. My husband was surprised to find the beef looked like a small filet mignon, not usually the visual you expect when ordering this dish, (from our experience anyway while dining and enjoying this meal in Paris and beyond). But hey taste mattered more. Well, the thicker cut resulted in a bigger chew, as it may have been shaped like a beef tenderloin but Maison's steak did not have the tenderness that this cut has. Fries were crispy and flavorful. The Diver scallops were quite small but so robust in flavor. Unfortunately the supporting cast of parisian gnocchi, broccolini, and delicato squash (all things I love), we're just meh. Now my taste buds may have been off just a tad, so maybe I wasn't able to detect the delicate flavors because I still had lingering effects from a cold. I hope this was the case, as we really wanted to love this place. We absolutely place no blame on our server that evening for our declining service. He was over extended, running around trying to cater to all of his guests. Maybe the whole experience was a one off. But there are too many restaurants in Charleston we still want to visit so for now Maison will be off our list. read more

This was my first dinner out in Charleston on my trip. The service was nice and fast. This was a cute little place to go for a late dinner. I wouldn't say this was the best food I had for the price point, but it was solid. We started with the English pea tart and the fois gras. I didn't care for the pea tart personally, but my family did. I was surprised by the fois gras. The fois gras was solid and it was mixed with strawberry. The jam and toast was also wonderful. I got the monkfish chop. This was not my favorite fish ever. It was very dense and meaty, kind of on the heavier side for a fish. It resembled more of a meat texture to me than a soft and flaky fish, though it did fall off the bone. Overall, I wasn't mad about coming here. Maison was definitely a culinary experience, and happy stop for us on our trip to Charleston. Would give this place 4.5 stars if I could. The service was excellent, with our server both knowledgeable, accommodating, and attentive. In terms of food, the following is what we ordered: APPS -Steak Tartare: Delicious app to share, no mayo which is refreshing for a tartare. -Escargot: Extremely delicate and tender, if only there was more buttered herb sauce for the bread! A must try. -Pea Potato Gratin: Honestly delicious, gratin has this smooth goat cheese flavor to it that make this one of the best dishes. -French Onion Croquette: Onion soup inverted, for just $5 a piece it really is worth the value. -Tuna Tartare: Also refreshing, came with crepes that weren't that necessary. The steak tartare was the better between the two in our opinion. MAINS Monkfish- Very good and tender, $30 was overpriced for the experience and was not the star main for the table. Roasted Chicken: Very good but tasted like it was Sous vide for a bit too long. Roast chicken was over cooked with a grainy texture. That being said, the sauces were fantastic with a perfectly confit crust, making the the dish the star of the mains purely for flavor. Rabbit En croute: Very filling with a lot of depth--definitely the kind of dish you would want to tuck into following a hard ski run. Definition of French-farm comfort food. Based on a good friend's enthusiastic recommendation, we came to Maison for dinner on a Thursday night. She made the reservation and my understanding is that it was tough to get and needed to be made in advance, so keep that in mind! We pulled up into a front door parking space, which was awesome, and were immediately seated at our cozy table for 3. The inside of this space struck me as more cozy diner than french bistro; its something about the lighting that I think could be improved to achieve a more authentic French feel. Our waiter was fabulous and helped guide us through the menu. It was easy to pick the onion soup croquette to start. I had a friend who had *just* been to NYC and was telling me that soup in dumplings was all the rage. As a french onion soup lover, I had to have it! It did not disappoint although I quickly realized one must be careful cutting into a croquette with warm soup inside. Highly recommend. We also had the pate, which I thoroughly enjoyed and would order again. We had a tough time settling on mains, but after seeing food at our neighbor's table (and hearing their glowing recs) and relying on the expertise of our amazing waiter, we decided to split the Coq au Vin and the Rabbit en Croute. I love rabbit and I love pot pie, so yup, Rabbit en Croute was an absolutely brilliant dish. Nice chunks of rabbiet with delicious vegetables inside a perfectly cooked puff pastry with a hint of truffles. If you're thinking about ordering this, DO IT. It will not disappoint, especially in chilly fall and winter weather! But hold the phone - that Coq au Vin is a triumph. Truly the best chicken I've ever eaten in a restaurant. The airline chicken breast is cooked perfectly - juicy with a delightful sear on the skin. It has all the delicious chicken flavor you want. I also ADORED the brussel sprouts farci, which had yummy chicken thigh meat inside.
