    Amazing pickle chips. Not greasy!

This place is an historic landmark fir authentic German food. Very authentic, with an old school bar. We arrived late on Fri night and assumed they were closed, but we were able to get a fab bar meal: curried bratwurst w sauerkraut, pickle chips and waffle fries. All washed down with German beer. Excellent! We will return..

These guys are the biggest crooks they cheat every customer! I can't recommend and I would avoid them at all costs! The blonde bartender I ordered kettle one with soda water they have a sign that 20% auto gratuity on parties of 6 or more or 100.00 or more. I wanted to open a tab, he said he couldn't and brought me back my check and the lame drink. He charged me 9.00 for drink and 1.00 for the soda water, and 2.00 for the tip! Clearly this place condones cheating customers. I asked the blonde scruffy bartender with the hoop earring about this he said laughingly well soda costs money. I think he did this purely to cheat customers, I think this place needs a visit from the Liquer Control Commission of Michigen, I'll sending them a message next! Seriously they cheated my friends as well, sad when opportunity controls your faith in doing what is right, that sucks, I hate being cheated and lied to! I can't support how business and all my friends this morning in a group chat all shared their receipts and they were unscrupulously overcharged also. I recommend they all post here as well and file with LCC of Michigan also!

This place charges $10 cover charge. I sure hope that it goes towards repairing the potholes on the dance floor.

I believe they are under new management as I spoke the owner who is from Pittsburgh. The fries are excellent and the Heidelberger is top notch and HUGE. Staff were friendly and the place is clean. I appreciated the musical discussion and learning more about the current scene in Ann Arbor.

The Heidelberg is hit and miss with it's service. Some days you can get in and out within 45 minutes to an hour. Other days it takes your 45 minutes to see a server downstairs and by then you're ready to leave. On the good days though, the reubens are some of the best in town and who doesn't want DAS BOOOOT!!?

Absolutely phenomenal. My boyfriend and I are vacationing in Ann Arbor for a week and decided to try out this restaurant. Our server, Ben, was not only incredibly kind and charming, but informed on the food, drinks, and but local area as well. He and other staff were very much so understanding of the covid situation, and was actually able to provide substantial information as to the differing mandates in our state. Our food came out hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious. We plan on visiting again during our short stay here, and encourage others to stop by and show some love!

This review is of the German restaurant on the main floor. We went for dinner on a Thursday night and we were the only people in the restaurant which meant that service was a bit slow since the kitchen wasn't running at full speed. We had the Rouladen which came with two side dishes. We ordered the fried potatoes and the red cabbage and a side order of the Käsespätzle. The Rouladen had nice flavor but they were a bit dry and over cooked. On the other hand, all three side dishes were very good and better than our side dishes at Metzger's. Our dinner companion ordered the Wiener Schnitzel and he gave it a B. Our server was friendly. The decor is Bavarian Kitsch (even though Heidelberg is not in Bavaria).

    "Mushroom" sauce.

This was by far one of the worst restaurants and bars I have ever frequented. We were really excited to try some German fare and didn't bother looking at reviews. First, we walked into a deserted place with tables stacked - this should have been our first red flag. The beer we wanted was not available and we were told that the online menu (there was no physical copy) was outdated. We then made the second huge mistake of ordering food. We both wanted Jager Schnitzel. The Copenhagen sauce was "out." The only option was the "creamy mushroom." We have had a lot of amazing German food before so had expected something authentic. The schnitzel schnitzel consisted of a few bites of tough and chewy mystery meat coated in gobs of salty, overcooked batter. And the spaetzel was covered in a glob of concentrated Worstershire sauce mixed with corn starch. This was no semblance of mushrooms. The red cabbage was dry, and all we tasted was vinegar. We paid the expensive bill ($21 bucks for a plate of inedible slop) and went elsewhere to eat a real dinner. I cannot believe that this place can serve the kind of food they do and not be utterly ashamed. This is an embarrassment to German fare and what was, apparently, a nice Ann Arbor mainstay for many years. Heck, this place is embarrassing no matter which way you slice it. Other than the food, the ambiance was lacking. The downstairs bar was dark so we didn't bother going down. The women's bathroom's stall door was held together with duct tape and the restaurant and bar were dirty and musty. As a foodie and lover of beer and food, and a strong supporter of local eateries, I am so so sad that this is the kind of review I have to write given that we can finally eat out after COVID. Most upsetting is that some fine establishments couldn't make it through the pandemic, yet this place did. I would never recommend anyone waste their time to come here. You can find excellent beers and edible food just a door away.

There was no host/hostess at the door waiting to seat us at grizzly peak upstairs, so we walked around looking for seats at or near the bar. However, their large tables only seat 6, and we were a party of 8. We then were told by the bartender that there would be more room in the Old German which is beneath Grizzly Peak. Downstairs we sat ourselves, and had service within a few minutes. She was polite, attentive, and took all 8 orders from memory which was impressive. They were out of porter which is normally my beer of choice. However, the belgian trippel they had on "Brewer's Special" was quite tasty. The men's restroom has a bit of an awkwardly weird layout. But as i said, there were no major complaints. My group rates this place a 5 based on service and drinks. We didn't eat here.

Coming from a Polish background where my grandmother made it fresh, I have not tasted pierogi that authentic in a very long time. The dough always makes it with pierogi, and theres is spot on. I was looking for a nice sit down restaurant that can allow me to be present and enjoy the quiet ambiance as opposed to chitter/chatter and general noise. I read that reservations are needed. I called Tuesday night and asked if I can get a table w/o one. The gentleman that took the call was very polite and said I can absolutely come in. This was pretty much next to the bookstore I went to on Monday. I didn't even know because I was too wrapped up in the book that I just purchased. I rarely do things like this because I feel guilty for enjoying myself on a work trip. That I away from my kids and my cats. I was seated right away. Service was spectacular. I did not get his name. I enjoyed our exchange. He shared that he lived in San Diego before moving back and checked on me throughout my dining experience. I ordered the kielbasa from the appetizer menu. The grilled onions, pickles, fresh carrots and purple cabbage, especially the mustard made the kielbasa so succulent and savory. I have been craving for pierogi so that was what I ordered as my main entree. I had one of each flavor that they offer. It was a surprise w/ each bite because I did not know which was which. I was surprised I didn't devour the plate. My entree came w/ a fresh salad w/ house made ranch and house made roll (dense but airy!). After I ordered, I marveled at the decor. That rustic and historic vibe. There was a frame that holds music notes from Mozart and a piano to my left. I love how serene and intimate this restaurant was. I only took my phone out to take pictures of my food because I wanted to enjoy the solitude I seldom get to have. Come here! Take yourself out! You deserve it. Great food. Great atmosphere. Great service!
