It has the look and feel of home; the frauleins are friendly and accommodating. It's just not the traditional Bavarian experience I was hoping for. Three tiered design; a dance club in the basement, an upstairs for private parties and the restaurant in between. The bar is wünderbar! A huge beer list including some expensive Weihenstephans. Many of the old school influences are NOT practiced here. I get that, it's just a disappointment. I love the decor and the general buzz of the building. We came during a lull. So it's hard to gage the clientele. Heidelberg has the look and feel of a German hofbräu. Once inside the atmosphere is traumhaft; reminiscent of a traditional Alpine pub. Some german family members were in town and of course we went here and Metzgers, with the latter being more authentic. However, for a boot of german beer, you can't go wrong. Food wise, I'd recommend a brat over a schnitzel (it wasn't very crispy or thin). Go here for more beer garden vibes with louder music. On Cinco de Mayo Ann Arbor was super packed at all the Mexican restaurants so my friend and I went over to Heidelberg to have dinner and a drink. Let me preface by saying that our server was super nice however he was not the best at his job. His attitude was amazing, but his bartender skills were subpar. He was the only one working in the front of the house that day. I ordered a burger and it was supposed to have lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on it. I asked him if he could add pickles to it as well and then I told him the type of cheese I want. I ended up getting a burger with only cheese and pickles on it. When we asked for condiments, they didn't have them readily available so he had to go back to the kitchen and find them which took a lot longer than it should have. The burger was still good and the fries were really good too. No, the vibe of the place was neat. It seemed to be quite authentic to what a German style pub would be. Uncomfortable wooden chairs and long tables a smaller bar area that was kind of old and outdated looking, but the atmosphere was still comfortable, even though the seats weren't. The blonde bartender I ordered kettle one with soda water they have a sign that 20% auto gratuity on parties of 6 or more or 100.00 or more. I wanted to open a tab, he said he couldn't and brought me back my check and the lame drink. He charged me 9.00 for drink and 1.00 for the soda water, and 2.00 for the tip! Walked in on a Monday night with our three pre-teens to an empty restaurant where the waiter was smoking outside standing next to the door with the "please don't smoke by the door" sign and was feeling like this might have not been the right choice. The music was super loud and we had to ask to have it turned down twice so that we could talk to each other. The menu looked solid and had some unique things while still having some German favorites. The murals on the wall on the main floor were really cool to look at. The main dining area seemed pretty clean, had a smell of decade old college bar which isn't great but it wasn't overwhelming. Bathrooms were pretty much what you would expect from a college bar, most things were broken or barely taped together. Cracked tiles and holes punched in walls. We went down to the basement bar which was empty to explore and it reeked deeply of day old dishwasher, sweat and stale alcohol. It was a very cool looking place but I definitely would not recommend trying to eat down there. The waiter was really kind but almost completely MIA for most of the night. Took 10 minutes to get water, another 5-10 for him to bring silverware. Thankfully when he came to bring the water we snagged him before he ran off and got our food order in. Food was also a long wait, probably 25 min. and during our wait the bar top started to fill up with a variety of characters from a father/son pair to a woman yelling the "N" word over and over so it was prime people watching. There was a lot of yelling and cussing between the waiter and the people coming in, it was obvious they were regulars. The food that arrived was delicious. The veal sandwich was tough to beat, our picky eater loved the chicken tenders and the sauerbraten was good with the red cabbage and kaesespaetzle. The only thing that brought down the cabbage was that despite it being extremely delicious it wasn't as all what I expected having eaten and cooked it before with a traditional German recipe. The beer cheese was also a highlight for everyone as were all of the other sauces and dips. The only letdown was the appetizer pretzel, texture was tough, it was under salted and with 5 of us trying it, not a one of us finished our small portion. I think I would go back again but probably not with the kids, even on a weeknight there was just too much bad language being thrown around. read more

Absolutely phenomenal. My boyfriend and I are vacationing in Ann Arbor for a week and decided to try out this restaurant. Our server, Ben, was not only incredibly kind and charming, but informed on the food, drinks, and but local area as well. He and other staff were very much so understanding of the covid situation, and was actually able to provide substantial information as to the differing mandates in our state. We went for dinner on a Thursday night and we were the only people in the restaurant which meant that service was a bit slow since the kitchen wasn't running at full speed. We had the Rouladen which came with two side dishes. We ordered the fried potatoes and the red cabbage and a side order of the Käsespätzle. The Rouladen had nice flavor but they were a bit dry and over cooked. On the other hand, all three side dishes were very good and better than our side dishes at Metzger's. This was by far one of the worst restaurants and bars I have ever frequented. We were really excited to try some German fare and didn't bother looking at reviews. First, we walked into a deserted place with tables stacked - this should have been our first red flag. The beer we wanted was not available and we were told that the online menu (there was no physical copy) was outdated. We then made the second huge mistake of ordering food. We both wanted Jager Schnitzel. The Copenhagen sauce was "out." The only option was the "creamy mushroom." We have had a lot of amazing German food before so had expected something authentic. The schnitzel schnitzel consisted of a few bites of tough and chewy mystery meat coated in gobs of salty, overcooked batter. And the spaetzel was covered in a glob of concentrated Worstershire sauce mixed with corn starch. This was no semblance of mushrooms. The red cabbage was dry, and all we tasted was vinegar. We paid the expensive bill ($21 bucks for a plate of inedible slop) and went elsewhere to eat a real dinner. I cannot believe that this place can serve the kind of food they do and not be utterly ashamed. This is an embarrassment to German fare and what was, apparently, a nice Ann Arbor mainstay for many years. Heck, this place is embarrassing no matter which way you slice it. Other than the food, the ambiance was lacking. The downstairs bar was dark so we didn't bother going down. The women's bathroom's stall door was held together with duct tape and the restaurant and bar were dirty and musty. As a foodie and lover of beer and food, and a strong supporter of local eateries, I am so so sad that this is the kind of review I have to write given that we can finally eat out after COVID. Most upsetting is that some fine establishments couldn't make it through the pandemic, yet this place did. I would never recommend anyone waste their time to come here. We finally checked out the Heidelberg last night for dinner. I'd heard great things about the bars when I lived in Ann Arbor, but that wasn't our scene with the baby in tow. Having spent a few months in Germany last year, we found the food to be pretty decent German fare, but we were used to northern Germany, and these were Bavarian specialties. We still enjoyed our meals. The biggest drawbacks for us were just because of kid stuff (and there were high chairs available, so I'm assuming it was intended to be a family restaurant). First I forgot to order the baby's dinner. Oops! All my fault, I know, but I wish the waitress had asked if she would be eating something.. Secondly was the fact that since the restrooms on the main floor have been remodeled (they're bigger now!), there is no changing table in either restroom. The waitress offered to block the front door and let us change the baby in the vestibule, which was kind. I have to add that both the bartender and the waitress were great - definitely not at all representative of typical German customer service (because there is no customer service in Germany..). read more

Love this bar food is great too, they have honestly some of the best happy hour deals and what makes theirs so great is it's not the normal hours 4-6 pm weekdays, but not here it's daily yes even on the weekends and it's from 10pm-2am and they have something for everyone on their happy hour food, appetizers, cocktails, shots, draft beer. The new manager is think her name is Max is killing it deserves a ton of praise much different than when I stopped in a few years ago. The setting is amazing too you really feel like you're in Germany. The bartenders also do a amazing job I was unsure about what beer I would like to have he gave me a few samples and a couple of his favorites, he was very patient and knowledgeable about the beers anyway if you haven't been here go check it out, if you have and your last trip was unfavorable I urge you to give it another shot this is a new experience all together. Sad day in AA. What had been a favorite go to for excellent food is now a mere shadow of itself. Should have known when the bartender came over and plopped a tablet on the table. Wait that's not even the menu. You order online. No waiter. And I asked him what beers were on happy hour special. He said that ended at 7. But the sign outside says 4-10! When we asked him about the changed menu he said it's been like that as long as he's worked there. We said it's been a few months since we were there. "How long have you worked here?" "Two weeks". WTH! There's only three German dishes on the menu. And no combo plates we loved. Seriously the menu is now quesadillas, nachos, tacos, burgers and other crappy bar food. Ugh. The Heidelberg is an institution. Like most it probably is a bit in need of some invigorating, but if you're looking for traditional German food in a traditional setting you would be well served to visit the Heidelberg. Family ordered from the handy tablet-based menu which was great. Helped my teenagers feel comfortable with what they were getting since they could review ingredients and pictures of each dish. Gone are the days of old The decor remains but little else of this older Ann Arbor staple. You will be guaranteed some German beer on tap, but there are better places to go for that. The menu is now extremely limited, only 3 German entrees...additionally the portions seemed halved but the cost the same. The quality has diminished as well. The new electronic menu system with no actual waiter seems to result in a backed up kitchen and long wait. I miss the old Heidelberg. Seek Metzgers if you wish some true German food and hospitality. He consistently greets every customer that comes up to the bar and every customer that walks through the door during non-peak hours. He introduced me to an old-fashioned with ginger (which I have never had before) which is delicious. I have been to this bar twice and plan to come back for this drink. The Heidelberg is three levels and essentially three different worlds. The basement is a dive bar, long and narrow with lots of places to sit & dart boards towards the back. The main level is a restaurant and the upstairs is a unremarkable bar that has more music/karaoke sort of events. I've only been upstairs on Wednesday nights, karaoke. It can get PACKED by later on, so don't go there with your heart set on getting to sing all your fav's... it could take a while for you even to get up there once. There are usually good beer specials, but mixed drinks are pricey - Jack Daniels for example is about $6... which is expensive, even for Main St. The basement bar could have turned into a favorite for me, I like the space & I love played darts. However, I avoid going here at all costs because (as numerous other reviewers have noted) the bartender has the WORST attitude I have ever encountered. She's the first bartender who's actually made me feel guilty for ordering a drink. Umm... isn't that what you're SUPPOSED to be doing at a bar?! She has said such rude and inappropriate things to both people I've been with and to me that I've been flabbergasted. The first time or two I wrote it off thinking "ohh, she's just had a bad day.." but after numerous occasions, and hearing stories from others, I've had to give up that theory. For example, my friend sat at the bar one evening, patiently trying to get a beer... Monica (the bartender) walked past several times, helping other people. Finally, Monica stood right in front of my friend and started doing paperwork, as if taunting her. My friend said "excuse me, is it possible to order a beer?" and Monica glared at her and snarled, "Well, if you'd made eye contact with me when I'd looked at you earlier, you would've had it by now". My friend's jaw just about hit the bar... and the townies who were nearby just shrugged & said "that's how she is". It's as if some of them almost find her disdain for helping customers endearing. Umm, not me! I'd much rather head to other places where I'm greeted with a smile & the bartender is a jovial person who's fun to banter with. I sure don't need to pay $6 for a jack 'n coke + tip to be treated like that. The other downside to the Heidelberg are the womens' bathrooms (can't speak about the mens...). The space between the edge of the toilet and the stall door is approximately... ooh... I'd say 3 inches. So if you are any taller than 4ft 6 inches, you are going to seriously struggle and will have to contort yourself into a very strange position to get anywhere even close to sitting down. A nice visual, I know. BOTTOM LINE: Craptastic bartender attitude and bruised knees make this a place that you're better off skipping right over. Trust me, you're not missing anything. read more

Yeah, I went back... a friend of mine wanted to try 'das boot'... despite knowing better we went and I didn't expect too much from this place and having your expectation way low is only way to go. I walked in and the dining room was empty... maybe about five people at the bar and one table with four people... I sat myself down and five minutes later, this older lady waitress came by... she brought the menu and wiped down the table. Started off with cheese fries and onion rings... everybody went with 2L boot and I settled on 1L. Now, the person that took our order was another server, because the waitress never came back to our table.... I had to flag down the second server, as they were just walking by us. The service here has some serious problem... the waitress lacks attention, the waiter who served us, lost one of our buddies credit card and tried to tell him that our buddy never gave it to him... but all of us told him that he took it and he looked worried and nervous... and spent five minutes trying to figure out where he could have put his credit card... after a while, he finally found the credit card and brought it back. The older waitress also kicked out a party of 10 out of the store, because someone fell off their chair... the waitress showed her nasty side and just told them to get out in loud voice.... I gonna wonder how this place stays in business with such a spoor service... well, I said I wouldn't go back but did... 3rd time is good enough... for sure I'll avoid this place from now on. read more

Anyways, I don't know why The Heidelberg has a mixed bag of Yelp ratings, because I think of it as a charming establishment, providing a taste of Germany and epic beer boots in an escapade from the otherwise tame daily life of Ann Arbor. Although it's not quite upscale enough for a classy dinner or hip enough to become famous on Instagram, it's definitely on the ranks of staples for food and drinks. We came for Restaurant Week, and they had an amazing deal with $28 for 2 entrees, 1 app, and 1 dessert. (I'm used to SF Restaurant Week dinners $40 or $65 per person, so BOGO at nearly half the price is godsend) The menus are on fancy iPads with pictures of all the dishes. (+) Wurst sampler (knockwurst, bratwurst and weisswurst served with a tasting of sauerkraut and braised red cabbage): Just the right portion to sample the different types of this classic German specialty. I think I've had more crafty wurst before in SF, though each one does have its own distinct flavor. Also note that to enjoy the sides, you should be someone who does not dislike pickled flavors since it's quite prominent. (++) Rouladen (thinly sliced top round, thick cut bacon, bell peppers, dill pickle, Swiss cheese and mustard): Slam dunk German comfort food. The heartiness of the beef stew ingredients is perfectly complemented by the savory gravy and thick cut bacon. (++) Sauerbraten (A marinated brisket prepared by both braising and slow roasting methods then smothered in gravy): Although I was tempted to get their signature wiener schnitzel, I favored braised brisket over a deep-fried slab of meat. The sauerbraten met my expectations, with the tenderness of the brisket reminiscent of Slow's BBQ. The gravy brought everything together, even though it was slightly underwhelming that the gravy of both dishes tasted the same. (++) Spaetzle: Done well; eggy, chewy, and a tad creamy. (+) Fried potatoes: Similar to brunch potatoes, can't go wrong and not too unique. Would definitely go for the spaetzle instead next time. (+) Bread pudding: Decent, but nothing too mind-blowing. Overall, the unassuming, cozy setting and home-cooked-style food featuring traditional German dishes has its niche in the AA restaurant scene. As one would expect from an establishment named The Heidelberg, it evokes images of pubs where tales of intrigue are born over several rounds of beer late into the night, or weary travelers relishing a good home-cooked meal under warm hospitality at a local inn. There are certain details they could work on for a one-up, but I do appreciate the noticeable effort they put into the excellent service and thoughtful presentation. read more

This place was perfect for my birthday dinner :) I visited this establishment with my husband and mom. We came here on a Monday evening, and we were the only table on the first floor.( there was an event going on upstairs, so I'm sure that's why. It definitely was not empty because of the food) The food was delicious! The menus are tablets, and you can see pictures of the menu items. For our appetizers, we ordered the mozzarella sticks, fried pickle spears and the KAESESPAETZLE, which are German dumplings tossed with roasted onions and garlic, topped with a creamy cheese sauce. The KAESESPAETZLE was my least favorite. I was expecting large dumplings but they were more like noodles ( I should have done my research). For my entree I ordered the sauer braten. It was very delicious, lots of flavor. The brisket is braised and slow cooked. It came with two sides, and I chose the potato pancakes and the diced seasoned potatoes ( I know what your thinking- a lot of potatoes, but they have other delicious options, I'm just a foodie:) ) it did not disappoint! My mom ordered the thunderbird ( grilled ham, shaved smoked turkey, thick cut bacon, thousand island dressing, melted Swiss cheese on a grilled pretzel bun. aServed with a pickle spear and fries) I tried a piece of it, and it was great! I thought it would be more Americanized, but surprisingly it wasn't. When I return, I will definitely consider trying it ( the only reason I say consider, is because they have a lot of options that I would like to try). Lastly, my husband ordered the Wiener schnitzel.
