Pork Schnitzel with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes and gravy and rye bread.

A locally owned, Ann Arbor favorite for really good German cuisine. We enjoy the vibrant, friendly atmosphere, friendly staff and of course the diverse menu options. On this visit I had the Pork Schnitzel with mushroom sauce. 2 generous pork cutlets, perfectly fried, tender and flavorful. As an entree it comes with two sides, so I chose mashed potatoes and gravy and a side salad. My wife had the Raspberry Vinaigrette Salad; fresh mixed greens, Gorgonzola cheese, toasted slivered almonds michigan dried cherries and sweet red onions. For protein she add the chargrilled steak which was prepared perfectly. Tender, juicy and very flavorful. Food is consistent, always prepared well, and the staff is always attentive. Definitely worth adding to your list of options.

Very charming inside with cuckoo clocks, steins, and other memorabilia of the regions. There is an outdoor patio section--a couple spots under the buildings awning (completely shaded) and a few more spots with umbrellas a little further out. Dogs are welcome outside and they gave us an ice water bowl which was very nice. Food is delicious--our go to is the schnitzel with mushroom gravy--and there are a bunch of sides you can choose from. I can't speak on the authenticity but the dishes lean into the ingredients' flavors like vinegar and onion which is great. As for sides we like the cucumbers (very heavy vinegar flavor, fresh and delicious), Bavarian red cabbage is an easy go to (depending on the day it's a little more sour/not) and the hot potato pancakes are nice if you want something heavier and you get applesauce with it! I believe all tables get a basket of room temp pumpernickel bread. As for drinks, they serve coke products and they for sure have beers. The restaurant has daily? specials (we sometimes get their version of gołąbki) which when seated will be given with the regular lunch or dinner menu.

As a ritual diner here, Metzger's ranks among the *absolute* best places to dine in the area for the hearty food, for the warm service, and for the charming ambiance! Don't sleep on this one! AMBIANCE It is a four generation, 90+ year establishment with charming booths, antique steins, & photos, and a beer garden. Want a cozy, family environment that takes you to Germany in Michigan? You got it! FOOD While it's not crazy upscale, what you will find is deliciously hearty food where every single dish hits the mark...and as a ritual diner, we've definitely tried at least all of the main dishes on the menu. When you settle in, you'll be immediately offered your choice of drink and the extensive menu and the rotating daily menu. Thankfully, the lovely dark rye bread with butter will keep you company! Some of our favorites on entrees: The lovely part is the rotating menu with entrees and choice of two sides depending on your mood. The side list is extensive with 10+ options of German fried potatoes, sauerkraut, Spatzen, beet salad, potato pancakes, and so on. The Prime Rib is a must-try with the au jus and horseradish sauce, the fish is always perfect. On desserts: You truly cannot leave without sampling their incredible carrot cake! It is listed as "Carrot Cake for 2" but the ginormous size means you will most definitely need a box to go...but you might honestly just finish it there because it's the perfect combination of moist cake, just-right sweetness, and delightful walnut crunch on the side. The Black Forest Torte Cake is also an excellent choice with moist chocolate sponge cake soaked in cherry liquer. Be warned: it's delicious and perfect for chocolate lovers. The Double Chocolate Torte is definitely far more dense if that's what you're craving! SERVICE The absolutely best family-feel there is! You can expect to greeted warmly and be seated, served, and spectacularly satisfied no matter how busy it gets. Every part of the wait staff is friendly and feels like family. It's a must-try on your way to town. You truly cannot miss this gem near Ann Arbor!

    Sauerbraten, Schnitzel

I was finally able to check out the Metzger's restaurant in Ann Arbor, claiming authentic German food. Well, I am German, born and raised. In short: this visit was terrible. We ordered 2 main courses (Sauerbraten and Schnitzel) accompanied by red cabbage, Sauerkraut, potato pancakes, 2 beer. The food was not tasty, it wasn't prepared fresh red cabbage and sauerkraut came out of a jar, the Spätzle had no flavor, the potato pancake were made out of what tasted like instant potato mash fried up in a pan. Never seen anything like that in Germany. Ever. The food was outrageously expensive. A simple Leberkässemmel (sandwich) was roughly $16. The waitress is not enjoying her job, besides the fact that was wasn't very friendly, she came to the table with a full mouth of food, chewing and speaking to us at the same time. The interior decor was the typical German suspects, lots of Kuckuck Uhren, lots and lots of Bierkrüge and some old German sayings on the wall. I never regretted going out for lunch that much.

We stopped at this restaurant for lunch on our way back from the U of M hospital as it is on our way home. We arrived right when it opened at 11 am. The owner seated us at our table. It was not quite busy yet but, we had excellent service. The waitress was attentive and provided us some very good suggestions for lunch. The food was delicious. They start by bringing out some bread with butter. The cucumber salad is so delicious. So good in fact, I asked if I could buy some to take home and....you can! I bought a quart to take home. The sauerkraut is not too sour and makes the lunch with the bratwurst and sausage. The homemade brown sauce they serve was a delicious addition to the meat. All in all a wonderful lunch, with great atmosphere and wait staff. We will definitely return.

Metzger's nails it with authentic German food. It's so delicious. Love all of the decor. Our waiter was amazing.

I've been coming to Metzger's since 1978. Discovered it as a Freshman at Michigan and been hooked ever since. The food still tastes the same as it did back then. The spatzen is to die for.

They have a lot of decorations.

I had high hopes for my visit to Metzger's, I'm a big fan of German food, and we were in the area for an event. It's in a pretty nondescript strip mall, but the outside is decorated. The inside is a lot different, with coats of arms, steins and cuckoo clocks all over the walls, it made me think of a what a German Cracker Barrel might look like. They have booths and tables, with oompa-pa music being piped in. Service was ok, I think they only had a few servers at the time. We did have to correct the order or ask for things a few times to get things right. But she was trying. The food was ok, kind of underwhelming. Taste was ok, temperature was hit or miss. Portion size is pretty big, but everything was kind of bland and not what I've had at other German restaurants. Maybe we hit them on an off day, but I'm not sure I'd try it again when I'm in A2.

The ambiance was not as fun as I would have expected but of course the crowd determines that. Took some time to get greeted, drinks, and (complimentary which is a nice touch) bread and butter. Good news bad news that because that took some time our dinners came out almost immediately afterward. The Michigan Salad was good but overpriced at $18 especially when that doesn't include chicken. Asked my husband if it was as good as the last one he had at a neighborhood grill and the answer was no. So 3 stars there. 3 stars also for the chicken picatta. Chicken piccata is my favorite dinner dish so I've had it at quite a few places. This one just didn't have much flavor. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the asparagus was great, but the piccata sauce just wasn't it. Neither were the mashed potatoes. Good portion and overall good dish, just doesn't compare in flavor to other restaurants. The owner (I assume) came by every time to ask how things were which is always very much appreciated. The live music was great, patio beautiful. Inside which we saw on our way out looked much livelier with sports on. We'll definitely go back and sit inside to enjoy a game! She got catfish and curly fries, which she loved. I got a larger sea food boil with every seasoning, it was great -- a bit small for what i thought the price was but for the taste i'm not complaining. We ordered hush puppies as an appetizer, and i had to hear from her that they were "good" but it's not how she would make them, blah blah blah.... Southern people and their soul food, everyone has a hot take. With that said, she ate most of them. Here are all the things that went right: - we were immediately greeted by the bartender Jackson and presented menus and water and told about the featured cocktails -as we were deciding what to drink, I noticed a pretty impressive coctktail list and a list of some very good, rich red wines -the Angel's Envy Bourbon Berry Smash was delicious..spoken by someone who normally doesn't like bourbon but wanted to try an Angels Envy bourbon drink that was not too sweet. I chose the raspberry rosemary syrup as the berry of choice. My boyfriend had a well made gin and soda. -nice to see there were appetizer and entree specials. Makes you want to come back to see what will be on the specials list each week in addition to a nice well-rounded menu -Jackson helped us select among multiple good sounding entrees. As a pescatarian I wanted a seafood dish and decided on the suggested seafood risotto. My date was between a couple of fish dishes but after a discussion with the bartender and a further description he decided on the Maui Mahi with coconut risotto. We chose to split a salad rather than have an appetizer. -the meal--the salad came out on two plates so we did not need to divide the spring mixed berry and goat cheese salad. It was delicious and fresh and definitely enough for two side salads. We were also provided some warm crusty bread with olive oil and balsamic. Our entrees were of good portion size, visually appealing and HOT---not just warm---which I greatly appreciated and talked about after we left. The risotto was prepared perfectly by someone who clearly knows how to make a proper risotto--it was not gluey and set-up, but perfectly tender and creamy. The seafood was delicious. The scallops were seared nicely and not overly salty (something many restaurants don't understand is that you typically don't have to salt shellfish as it is salty/briny on its own). My boyfriend's mahi was sizable portion on top of an ever so slightly sweet and spicy coconut risotto. His was fantastic as well. We also enjoyed the sautéed zucchini that came with both..also nice and hot! -we had a delicious bottle of wine with dinner. After we paid for dinner and left with our remaining wine, we promptly came back in because of the heavy downpour of rain. We sat back down and finished our wine. The things that could be ever so slightly improved: -the lighting in the dining area is fitting of the decor and vibe of a nicer restaurant but the lighting at the bar is just too bright. Could maybe benefit from dimming them and possibly adding a few candals oe the small table/rechargeable lamps along the bar as it seemed wide enough. -the shrimp on the risotto should be two larger shrimp (8-10 size ) rather than the very small shrimp that don't seem to fit the vibe of the dish -there were only two options for dessert...maybe another one or two would be great -a little birdie told us that the restaurant will be having a happy hour menu soon (and a second location). We would LOVE for you to add some truffle fries with some sort of aioli...we can envision ourselves stopping in for those and some wine...often! Great addition to the limited higher end restaurants in the area. We look forward to many more meals there.
