An Ann Arbor favorite! Metzger's is a long established restaurant where you can always count on great food, consistency, generous portions and great service. The interior is unique, cozy and will make you feel like you've traveled to an old world village. Tonight I had the Perch, one of their featured dishes. The perch is lightly dusted and pan fried, very flaky, fresh and flavorful. Their entrees include two sides. I chose the mashed potatoes with gravy and Cole slaw. My wife had their French Onion Soup, which was rich with melted Swiss cheese, croutons and had great flavor. Another fantastic visit to Metzger's for lunch today. I tried the smoked salmon sandwich off the lunch menu. Liptauer, red onion, tomato topped with sliced salmon and capers. All on their pumpernickel bread. Next time I may ask for it separated. I could only eat half. The charbroiled hamburger steak was great. With a fried egg on top. Excellent dishes and very nice service. Comfy booths as always. Easy parking. We visit about once a month and love the consistency. read more

When last in Ann Arbor, paid a visit to Metzger's, an old-line Geeman restaurant that was formerly in downtown Ann Arbor, but has since moved to the west side of town. The ambiance is simple but pleasant - no frills. I ordered sauerbraten, which is one of my go-to German dishes. I also got red cabbage and spaetzle as accompaniments. All were very good, as is typical at this establishment. The co-diner got the charbroiled salmon filet with potato pancakes and green beans (the veggie of.the day). Our server was quite busy, but kept things moving in a pleasant manner. Very charming inside with cuckoo clocks, steins, and other memorabilia of the regions. There is an outdoor patio section--a couple spots under the buildings awning (completely shaded) and a few more spots with umbrellas a little further out. Dogs are welcome outside and they gave us an ice water bowl which was very nice. Food is delicious--our go to is the schnitzel with mushroom gravy--and there are a bunch of sides you can choose from. I can't speak on the authenticity but the dishes lean into the ingredients' flavors like vinegar and onion which is great. As for sides we like the cucumbers (very heavy vinegar flavor, fresh and delicious), Bavarian red cabbage is an easy go to (depending on the day it's a little more sour/not) and the hot potato pancakes are nice if you want something heavier and you get applesauce with it! I believe all tables get a basket of room temp pumpernickel bread. As for drinks, they serve coke products and they for sure have beers. We stopped at this restaurant for lunch on our way back from the U of M hospital as it is on our way home. We arrived right when it opened at 11 am. The owner seated us at our table. It was not quite busy yet but, we had excellent service. The waitress was attentive and provided us some very good suggestions for lunch. The food was delicious. They start by bringing out some bread with butter. The cucumber salad is so delicious. So good in fact, I asked if I could buy some to take home and....you can! I bought a quart to take home. The sauerkraut is not too sour and makes the lunch with the bratwurst and sausage. The homemade brown sauce they serve was a delicious addition to the meat. All in all a wonderful lunch, with great atmosphere and wait staff. We will definitely return. read more

I was finally able to check out the Metzger's restaurant in Ann Arbor, claiming authentic German food. Well, I am German, born and raised. In short: this visit was terrible. We ordered 2 main courses (Sauerbraten and Schnitzel) accompanied by red cabbage, Sauerkraut, potato pancakes, 2 beer. The food was not tasty, it wasn't prepared fresh red cabbage and sauerkraut came out of a jar, the Spätzle had no flavor, the potato pancake were made out of what tasted like instant potato mash fried up in a pan. Never seen anything like that in Germany. Ever. The food was outrageously expensive. A simple Leberkässemmel (sandwich) was roughly $16. The waitress is not enjoying her job, besides the fact that was wasn't very friendly, she came to the table with a full mouth of food, chewing and speaking to us at the same time. The interior decor was the typical German suspects, lots of Kuckuck Uhren, lots and lots of Bierkrüge and some old German sayings on the wall. Brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. He was born and raised in Berlin which I think is important context. Firstly- the service was okay. Not super friendly or upbeat but polite enough. The decor is... cheesy at best. I got the zigeuner steak and it was massive! They really should put the oz on the menu because it came with two sides and it was far too much food for one person. My bf got rheinisher platter- he said it was good but the sauce is a bit off from the traditional. I will say, he says that this is the best German food he has had in Michigan so far since living here. Overall I would come back and try something different. read more

I would compare Metzger's to Cracker Barrel: the food quality is about the same. My friend and I each paid thirty bucks for an entree and Cracker Barrel would charge $15-20 for the same. Everything felt either canned or frozen except the spatzle, and the meats had no flavor. We got the signature dish, some fried chicken cutlet, beet salad, potato pancakes, and sauerkraut. read more

I had high hopes for my visit to Metzger's, I'm a big fan of German food, and we were in the area for an event. It's in a pretty nondescript strip mall, but the outside is decorated. The inside is a lot different, with coats of arms, steins and cuckoo clocks all over the walls, it made me think of a what a German Cracker Barrel might look like. They have booths and tables, with oompa-pa music being piped in. Service was ok, I think they only had a few servers at the time. We did have to correct the order or ask for things a few times to get things right. But she was trying. The food was ok, kind of underwhelming. Taste was ok, temperature was hit or miss. Portion size is pretty big, but everything was kind of bland and not what I've had at other German restaurants. Maybe we hit them on an off day, but I'm not sure I'd try it again when I'm in A2. read more

Best German comfort food around! I love coming here mostly because of the food, but the service is always friendly and pretty fast. This time I had the prime rib with brown gravy and fried onions on top - Zwiebeleosbraten. It was an enormous cut . I thought this is the dish where you win something if you finish it and I ordered the wrong one, but actually this is the normal size, so well worth the $37.99. It was nicely prepared and tasted just as perfect, perfect temp as prime rib should be prepared. The two sides I chose were the braised cabbage and German potato pancakes - both the best I've ever had. The restaurant itself has a rich history, much of it hung on the walls. Warm, friendly, cozy is how I would describe the atmosphere. They have an ample amount of seating but this place usually fills up for dinner always with a wait of people during peak time on the weekends. read more

We love to eat at Metzger's anytime we are nearby. They offer a selection of genuine German meals. This time we were a bit disappointed in the Schnitzel. It was dry, hard, and overcooked. There were no toppings for the schnitzel except for 2 types of mustard in small containers. My experience in Germany showed me that Schnitzel is offered with a variety of toppings, or sauces, to differentiate one from another. Also, the potato pancakes, in my opinion, should be thinner and not perfectly formed like a burger patty. After 40 years this was our first disappointing meal. The service was excellent!!! We are taking home a piece of carrot cake to feed 4 people! We will probably stop by again but choose differently next time. read more

I saw this restaurant while visiting Grand Traverse Bay Pie Company and always want to attend. I went to dinner with a friend here and it was really a great place to eat. We are both German ancestry, and so it feels like home. I have been wanting some good hearty food, and this is the place. I'm not a fan of beer, so I asked the server for her recommendation for a sweet cocktail. She suggested a Sidecar, and it was perfect. I knew I wanted Jagerscnitzel, and it was everything I expected. I chose the mushroom gravy, and it was very filling.i took some home to my very happy son. My friend chose sauerbraten and she was pleased also but very stuffed. Wouldn't call this groundbreaking cuisine but it's comforting German food! And the portions are extremely generous -- so plan to take some food home unless you have a considerable appetite. I enjoyed the perch dinner -- I didn't get it fully battered like is tradition here in MI, but it's got a slight batter to it and is nicely crisped up. Don't sleep on the red cabbage side -- it's incredible! Sweet and sour, and makes a nice bite with the spaetzle, too (which is a must). My partner enjoyed the cabbage rolls. We imagine it's similar to the rouladen (only served on weekends). His side of potato pancakes were pretty meh -- not crispy like a latke, more like an actual soft pancake. They have a good beer selection here. We especially enjoyed the weinstephaner doppelbock. Have been coming here for many years as a special treat and will continue, I imagine! read more

My friend has talked about Metzger's for years so it was time we gave it a try! I definitely haven't had a lot of experience with German food so I had difficulty deciding what to order. And it turns out I didn't make the right choice. I should have known to order a German meal but I went with safe (so I thought). The sesame chicken doesn't come with a recommendation from me. Very plain flavored even with the sauce. I was so disappointed! I also didn't care much for the potato pancake and I wouldn't order it again either. Now, I will say the Schnitzel my friend ordered was delicious. I honestly didn't know that pork could be so tender and tasty! This is the dish I will order when I visit again. I also enjoyed the Spatzen (German noodles) and I would suggest them as a side. The four of us shared the Käsespatzle (Cheese Spatzen) which is German noodles served warm over sauerkraut and smothered with onions and melted, aged Swiss Cheese. This was a yummy appetizer! I would like to eat here again! One piece of advice - get here early or at an off time. We arrived when they opened at 11 on a Sunday and it's a good thing. This place is a joke, they have decor indicating that they serve German food, however what they are serving is subpar at best. The potato pancakes are horrible, not anything like you would find in Germany. Even at an off the beaten path you find potato pancakes done very well. All dishes that were served to my family were awful. We will never visit this location nor recommend to anyone. Added to that the server messed up two of the orders completely and also forgot to bring our drinks to the table. I am sure when this original Metzger's restaurant was started the food was home made in quality but this has been lost over time. read more

Onion Pie A heaping serving of baked sweet onions with spices and eggs, cream cheese and a puffed pastry crust. Started with marvelous French Onion Soup a house specialty. Today's lunch special totally blown away Delicious . Rouladen a rare treat only a few places make this special dish. Choice round of beef rolled and stuffed with onion, bacon, pickles, mustard and spices. Baked in a fresh tomato beef sauce. Got with real house Mashed Potatoes and Gravy WOWED . Also this plate with Xtra Sausage, German Bratwurst Two links of a lightly spiced veal sausage smothered in caramelized onions. A favorite in the Black Forest. Sides Sauerkraut n Purple Cabbage both served warm and a bread basket. Had German Spatzel as a side a must try , three side sauces Horseradish, German Mustard and a special house sauce for the fabulous brats. It's been more years ago than I want to admit since I've been to Metzger's. Back in my student days, it was closer to campus, a place to go for great German food. The location may have changed but the food is still fine. My lake perch was done deep fried ("Northern Michigan style") but I could still taste the fresh perch. The Bavarian red cabbage was a sugar-vinegar delight. The spaetzle had just the heavy, gnocchi-like texture I wanted. The German potato salad was room temperature, not hot, and blissfully baconless, with a vinegary burn. The Oktoberfest beer was meaty with a touch of sweetness. Metzger's is a wonderfully authentic German that's been operating continuously since 1928. I've ate here twice and have enjoyed a variety of homemade German cuisine both times. There's really nothing you can go wrong with in trying. The schnitzel (breaded pork cutlet) is prepared the traditional German way and the Jäger sauce that accompanies it is the best. Their Sauerbraten is another classic entree that is excellent. I must do justice with the choice of sides that come with dinner. The potato pancakes (latkes) are just plain delicious. I'd come back strictly for these alone. I'm used to the kind my Polish family makes which tends to be thinner and longer. These are thick with chunks of onions and bell peppers inside. Even the dinner salad was impressive with lots of fresh veggies, thick cut croutons and homemade blue cheese dressing. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the beet salad. I love beets and thought it was gonna be a little more than just a small portion of beets that tasted like they came out of a can. Other than that everything was fresh, flavorful, and fantastic. I also want to add that the service was excellent. With the pandemic raging on and Omicron surging, Michigan has been especially hard hit. So many restaurants with limited hours strictly because there's not enough staff to cover. Our waitress explained that things were taking longer but the service we received was excellent. Our coffee never got below half full before she was back with a refill. Kudos to the staff here for running a great business. This restaurant was close to the hotel we were staying at so we thought we would try it out. We arrived shortly after they opened on a Sunday so it was not busy. My husband and I got the Reuben and I got mine half with red cabbage and half with sauerkraut which was an excellent suggestion by our waitress. The corned beef was decent. I would say that I prefer more rye flavor in my rye bread but other than that, no complaints. I asked for mustard which was a needed addition to the sandwich. My daughter loved the generous portion of chicken fingers and my so ordered wings which were crispy and spicy. They were prepared to perfection. I loved the french onion soup!
