Dr. Riehle is amazing. He is knowledgeable and caring. I dealt with a lot of feral. Dr. Riehle worked with our financial constraints. On the other hand, Dr. Alvarez would gouge us for money everytime. I would see Dr. Riehle as much as possible. And Dr. Ackerman was amazing also. But, I will no longer go to this practice because of Dr. Alvarez. read more

This place is great for all pets and even better for pet owners. Dr Reely really knows his stuff and won't ever try to over sell you on services. He's honest about what your pet needs and what they don't need at the time to help keep the bills low. They take appointments and you don't wait much longer than 15-20 minutes most of the time. They also take walk-ins, but you may wait awhile to get seen. Why they didn't get 5-stars: The place feels like a time capsule and hasn't changed in 50 years. It would do nicely with a facelift all around to make it a bit more appealing. read more

My dog has been seeing Dr. Riehle for many years. Dr. Riehle actively listens to your concerns, answers all your questions and he happens to be very good at establishing trust with his pet parents. My dog has been suffering from chronic spinal pain for 2-3 years now. At first the pain was intermittent and her pain meds would provide adequate pain relief. However, within the last 2 weeks, she kept getting frequent flare ups and severe pain. Dr. Riehle listened to my concerns about desiring a workup for her. He also prescribed low dose narcotics to help with her breakthrough pain as requested by me. I asked him if he thought she would be a good candidate for surgery because she's old. He told me he was unsure of the success rates for the surgery and recommended I see a specialist in AMC. I respect his honesty and adherence to his scope of practice. He is an extremely pleasant doctor. Upon making my payment for the visit, I had left my credit card at the front desk. One of the vet techs ran after me and found the car I was in to return my card to me. His staff members are incredibly attentive and kind. My husband and I have been looking for a new veterinarian for our two dogs since our previous vet (whom we loved) relocated out of state. We decided to check out Heights Animal Hospital because of the positive reviews and its close proximity, but it was a very odd and disappointing experience overall. Before I go into details, I will say that the vet technician that we interacted with was GREAT. He was communicative, patient, and very sweet with our dogs. If I could base this review on that interaction alone, I would give the place five stars (and he's the only reason I'm even giving two stars instead of one). That being said, we arrived 10 minutes early for our 9:40 appointment. Our dogs were there for an annual wellness exam and their vaccinations. The waiting room, which is tiny, was PACKED with people and pets. (We later learned that most of the people who were there were walk-ins.) There was no way we could comfortably stand in the waiting room with our two large dogs, so we waited outside in the 35 degree weather....for an hour and fifteen minutes. It was excruciating. When we were finally called in, we had to walk our dogs through the tiny waiting room, which elicited panicked screams from ladies clutching their tiny Pomeranians and Chihuahuas as though our dogs were rabid wolves, when in fact our dogs couldn't have cared less about their dogs. We were led to a tiny exam room with three doors (one leading to reception, one leading to the hallway, and one leading to another exam room), which turned out to be a passageway for all of the employees. So basically my husband, our two dogs, the vet tech, a vet assistant, and eventually the vet himself were all sharing this 10 ft by 10 ft space (that included an exam table) while others passed through. It was pretty much an epic nightmare. When the vet finally came in to examine our dogs, he did not make eye contact or introduce himself or even ask the names of our dogs, which seemed weird. He administered the vaccines and barely acknowledged our questions about our one dog's skin issues (we even brought in a fur sample, which he tossed without looking at). He jotted a few handwritten notes on random piece of paper and that was it. We then had to wait outside again until they were ready to have us pay (at which time I discovered that he had prescribed medication for our dog's skin, which never even received an official diagnosis). A week or so after we left, I emailed the office requesting copies of our dogs' updated medical records and was sent a scan of the vet's illegible handwritten notes, which weren't even on letterhead and contained no information other than their weight, the names of the vaccines they received, and what everything cost. When I questioned it and asked for official records, I received a response stating that insurance companies require handwritten notes and "there are no digital medical records." I responded that every vet I've ever seen in my lifetime has provided at least typed up records on letterhead, at which point the person replied that their new system next year will be able to provide that(???). To say that this office is old school is an understatement, and I definitely can't say we would ever return. read more

Very small office, but this is a great no fuss place that never push unnecessary services for your pets. We come here yearly for our dogs shots and allergy treatment and both vets, Dr. Alvarez and the older gentleman, have always been quick and to the point. Dr. Alvarez is more gentle and takes time to answer your questions while the older gentleman just treats and leaves, but he's by no means rude, just efficient. Receptionist lady is always sweet and consistent and visitation fee is $50 and prices for other treatment is very fair. For our dog's allergy shots, rash skin antibiotics and oral medicine it all comes to about $200 (with visitation fee included.) If you require a vet that'll hold your hands or if your pet requires very complicated treatment, Heights may not be for you. For basic check ups and wellness, Heights is great. read more

I would not have a low review for this place, it is totally fine EXCEPT for the fact that I took my cat in for a routine check-up, and had her vaccinated and asked for basic tests. I have done this at my old vet and it usually ends up costing around $200 for everything. This appointment (for my cat who was not sick!!!) set me back $475 which I was NOT anticipating. I just called them back today (and they put me on the phone with the vet directly to let me know the test results all looked fine), but when I asked about the bill, they just read the itemizations back to me, and said, "These are our prices." I guess the moral of my story is: if you're going to have any tests run on your pet, make sure how much everything costs before you do it, so you don't end up spending almost $500 on your potentially healthy buddy. read more

I've taken all my 4 animals here over the course of 5 years for procedures like wellness checks, spay/neutering, nail clips, microchipping, etc. This establishment is accommodating, flexible in scheduling, and affordable. Most places charge at least $500 and up for fixing animals, exam not included. Here it is around $400 which includes the service plus an exam. Nail trims are complimentary with any service. Staff is friendly. Will continue to come here even though I've moved to Manhattan. read more

Update! I hesitated going back here after my experience about a million years ago but I am glad that I did. I was able to get seen quickly without an appointment, the vet (Dr. Alvarez) was very thorough and matter of fact and diagnosed the problem. He told me the treatment options (he didn't give much choice, more of a like - this is what we need to do now - but my kitty was pretty sick so I completely understand) and it seems like he did everything to cover a lot of bases depending on what he thought the issues were before getting blood and urine tests back. He sent me home with meds and instructions to call back for test results the next day. The visit was pricey (around $550) but for all the meds and diagnostic testing it's about what I expected to pay. Called back the next day and the vet was very thorough on the phone, explained everything to me clearly, and answered every single question that I had without rushing me off of the phone. He offered a pricey diagnostic treatment and was NOT pushy about it - said we could wait and see and then decide if that was something we wanted to do. My cat's health is improving a LOT. I'm really impressed with this vet and wouldn't hesitate to go back (and bring my other cats, too!). read more

Nope. On all levels Took my pup here for anal gland expression because I couldn't reserve a Zipcar to go to my vet in Astoria. Walk out with a $46 fee and a traumatized dog. The vet we had was an ancient old man who didn't have any bedside manner. He was unhygienic (wiping my dog's leg with the paper towel then wiping the exam table with the same paper towel). Called my dog a "he" when she is a female. Walked out right after he'd finished the exam without saying anything to me. Left the vet assistant to explain what was going on. Also, the amount of force this old dude used on my 20lbs dog was inhumane. My poor pup looked back at me more than once in fear. Would never go back to this place ever again. EVER. I'd rather walk all the way to Astoria and see my regular vet than deal with this nightmare of a practice. read more

It was early Saturday morning at 8:30 and our cat swallowed a foreign body. We were desperately trying to find any vet clinic that could help us, and we found Heights Animal Hospital. When the clerk heard that it was an emergency foreign body ingestion, he immediately arranged a visit for us. We went to the clinic right away, without any waiting in line, they took the X ray, located the foreign body, and wrote a referral letter to the hospital for endoscope surgery. Within 20 minutes, we were on our way to the hospital, with a CD of digital X ray image and a referral letter. We truly thank Dr. Louis Alvarez and all the people at Heights Animal Hospital for their extremely fast and professional care. I love the Vets here. I brought my dog here after a scary digestive issue but have also brought her here for tooth removal surgery. I'm a nervous parent, but these vets aren't easily ruffled and knew exactly what the issue was. I find they don't advise extraneous tests or advise spending more than you should. The techs are lovely as well. I first took my pup to a vet in the city and the estimate for tooth surgery there was over $1k. Heights completed the same surgery for around $400. To me, they're more than reasonably priced. Don't be put off by the vintage aesthetic of the office. read more

I don't usually write reviews but this time I had to share my experience to warn other pet owners. On April 29 I had an emergency with my small shih tzu. She had been vomiting the night before and she was in pain, she didn't want to move, walk, pee or even be touch something that's very unusual of her. I called this place as soon as they opened and they told me they were busy but would be able to open up a spot for me at 9:40. I took the appointment and arrived there on time. They took my information and my pets information and we were eventually called in. When the vet was checking my pet she didn't cried and was moving which I found odd and I kept telling the vet she hadn't moved since last night, which at that point the vet tech said dogs sometimes hide their pain, so either way they gave her two shots to stop the vomiting and send me with antibiotics. I asked if they could do an X-ray as my personal vet had suggested an X-ray will be the best way possible to see what was going on inside her belly. They told me they were very busy and didn't have time for an X-ray and that if I wanted I could come back later in the afternoon or the following day. The tech also said that either way what they could do was minimal so to just wait and let the medication take effect. Sure enough I had to rush to another vet late at night because my dog was still in pain and she had gotten worst. She was shaking, her stomach was extremely bloated and hard, she was just whining non stop. Once we arrived at the other vet they took her in and the first thing they did was do an X-ray, it turned out she was "clogged up" and her stomach was extremely swollen and she was in a lot of pain. The vet had to physically help her use the bathroom and then gave her a pill to finish the procedure. They also gave her pain medication and Pepcid to take at home. They kept her for about an hour to make sure she was better and had gone to the bathroom. They also injected fluids as she was dehydrated, they also called the following day to make sure she was doing better. Heights Animal Hospital NEVER called!! They obviously don't care about the pets, they just want money which is why they take in so many dogs but don't do their job properly. Do Not take your dogs here especially during an emergency, they will just do the minimal and take your money without caring about the dogs well being. read more

My dog had been examined TWICE before this encounter..the last being the day before at the same vet!! After a two second exam, he tells me Nick has a heart murmur - after being examed yesterday and they said he was good to go for treatment today. These guys are the best vet in the neighborhood. Trust me, I've been around the block, and I know!!! :) I have had a pet cat for 10 years, and recently got a puppy. I have been to two different animal hospitals in Woodside/Jackson Heights that had good reviews on Yelp, but neither of these hospitals delivered results. Our cat has had ongoing health issues the past year (inflammation in the face, pink nose was crusting over and turning black, starting to lose hair on her legs), and we have spent thousands of dollars in the past year trying to figure out how to help her. Regardless of how much money we spent, we were not getting answers, and our cat's health kept deteriorating. I was honestly at the point where I was traumatized from these experiences and not sure if I would ever take her to a vet again. It was actually the owner of a local pet supply store that recommended Doctor Riehle at Heights Animal Hospital. I am SO happy I came here! Doctor Riehle is extremely experienced! Also, this practice has drop-in hours, so you don't have to wait WEEKS for an appointment. The staff is also extremely courteous, professional, details-oriented, and cares about animals, AND the facility is extremely clean and organized. We took our cat there for one drop-in visit on a Saturday morning, and Doctor Riehle made a recommendation to change our cat's diet to hypoallergenic food. It was such a simple solution, but the 3 other vets in the neighborhood NEVER made that recommendation. Literally less than 24 hours later, my cat's health turned a corner after we switched her food! She still needs to go back for a follow up, but this is the first time I have felt optimistic about her health in the past year. I am so thankful for Doctor Riehle, and I am so happy that we finally have a neighborhood vet that we trust. We also just got a puppy, and Doctor Riehle and his staff have been SO helpful, understanding and accommodating with getting her vaccination paperwork in order so that she can be admitted into Puppy Playtime/Puppy Kindergarten at various places in NYC. Do not hesitate to take your pet here! This is by far the BEST vet in the area. We had dental cleaning done on 3 of our schnauzers here. We shopped around for the best prices so we landed at this place. Over the phone they were already very kind and patient, no attitude at all. Things only got better once we got there! They did the pre-exams with care, and answered our questions. The thing we wanted to make sure is that our dogs won't be under anesthesia under a rookie's hand and they comforted us on that regard. The 2 doctors who did the pup's surgeries had extensive experience. They complimented the dogs on our way out - even though they are little monsters :D but which parent doesn't LOVE that feeling? The surgery went perfectly fine of course, the results are perfect and the prices were very reasonable! We were very happy. At another time we brought one of our dog back for a lump under the skin we thought could possibly be cancerous. They saw us literally in 6 minutes, the doctor knew the name/age/medical history of the dog without asking (he was prepared) and told us not to worry at this point and explained why. When we left they didn't accept payment. We left with a genuine feeling of goodwill coming at us! What a great business! Very inspiring! This is our third visit but we definitely found OUR vet! Very small veterinarian in Jackson Heights that treats both animals and humans so wonderfully. We lost both of our cats this summer and in both instances they were incredibly supportive and helped us make some of the most painful decisions I have ever been faced with. But for 19 years they dealt with every little what-not our little roommates, Bob and Ray, could come up. Even Maxine who was never sick a day in her life, also, in the end, leaned on their compassion. They are caring, capable and also offer internships to young people from JBowne High School. Gotta love a place that mentors both animals and young people. They also referred us to a great cat sitter. read more

Half the time I've had a problem or was worried about something, I'd bring my dog in and they'd check him over and not charge me cuz he was fine. Here's the down and dirty: Close to my house, always quick to see us, open almost everyday. Medically - the pets are treated and their ailment/illness/injury is remedied with a good treatment. Why I gave it 4 stars - convenience and good medical treatment. The cons are not enough to keep me away from this vet seeing that it's so close and never steered my pets wrong in terms of treatment and diagnosis. Dr. Riehle is great. A quiet guy, but knows his stuff and gives me options about different plans for treatment so he leaves it up to me while still giving his recommendations. He also has never made me get tests or extra treatment just for the money if it was not necessary. read more

Definitely puts me at ease when I'm already on edge with my sick kitty. I could just walk-in so that was great. I been taking my cat here for the past week. He's sick unfortunately, and the vet diagnosed him with hyperthyroidism. :( but that's not the point. They are very kind people, however I feel that the staff were more informative than the vet. It almost seem as if the vet just does the great job and that's it. They don't really inform you on much unless you're really there asking questions and so on. Nonetheless their services are great and prices are reasonable. But just keep in mind to go in there aware of your pets condition and question every "next step" the vet will take. Other than that I'd keep going there. And their animals are so cute and healthy! I've been taking my pets to Heights Animal Hospital for about 7/8 years now and I cannot sing their praises highly enough. They've taken wonderful care of my cat and dog into their senior years. My cat crossed the bridge here earlier this year and they were so supportive and compassionate. They've cared for my dog and his old man ailments with the highest level of professionalism and kindness. I've never felt oversold or duped (which unfortunately I cannot say has been my experience with other vets), every matter has always been fully explained to me but with no pressure to make a particular decision other than the one I come to myself. With my guy being well into his senior years every vet visit comes with a certain amount of dread about what news I may get, but I'm always confident that he'll get the highest level of care from the extremely competent staff of Heights Animal Hospital.
