First time coming here and walked out in less than a minute. My fur baby broke his nail and was bleeding a lot so we called to make an appt and they told us to just come in. When we got there, we were greeted by the worse person ever. Didn't catch her name but she was the tall skinny black girl. Oh my god!!!!! The attitude on her and her thinking she is entitled to treat customers with the most nastiest attitude. We walked in and went to the front desk and say hello a to her and the next action pissed me off. She held out her hand and told me to stop while she was on her cell phone talking about something she ate last night. I was like wtf!!!! So her conversation about what she ate was more important than just saying hello?? Me and my husband looked at each other and just walked out. I don't know how this place stays in business hiring staff like her. Never coming here ever again and suggest everyone to stay away too. Dr.Elbasty is no longer here and knowing him as our pets were taken years ago to him, we would not come to this clinic if he was still here. Most of the negative reviews are due to him. Holiday weekend and they saw our dog right away. Dr. Cortez had a likable bedside manner, explaining things and not pushy at all. And Kudos to Ashley, the tech who was awesome. When my Cat got bitten on the stomach by a dog we took him there and they took good care of him but then the bills started to stack up and he has to stay there for over a month while many different doctors had to do different procedures which caused confusion and made it take more time for the wound to heal, One doctor specifically was the main problem being an old woman who didn't listen to any of the other doctor's recommendations which were to not put a band aid since the wound was doing pretty good and she still put it making the wound more stretched out and costing more money due to him having to stay there for longer, A pretty good Veterinarian Hospital but make sure to strictly tell the old woman to listen to the other doctors advice so your pet can Heal up properly and fast. Great staff. I've been taking dog here, since she was a puppy (2yrs now). They treat with great care, and always know her name when we call on the phone or come in the door! Dr. Cortes and Dr. Benjamin have been so helpful, they don't try to push unnecessary procedures or drugs on your pet! They really work well with you to figure things out! Dr. Elbasty's negligence and care for his monetary gain resulted in my dog's suffering and death. My dog was taken here to have a bump looked at. Despite my dogs old age and unfit health for surgery (later revealed by another vet, I was not aware) he urged my dog to get the surgery. During surgery he cut a vein, my dog bleed perfusley and the tumor according to him "migrated to his kidney". He was stapled up and sent home. I followed proper post surgical care but he developed a severe infection and took him back. In the follow-up visit they did nothing for his developing infection but rather charged me another $305 in addition to the $1385 for surgery. Long story short, I took him to another vet. We tried requesting his surgery records but his staff made up every excuse to not send them!! I was waiting an entire afternoon for the records to come in but the staff went as far to say there were no vets or managers in that day. Your buisness is called American Animal Hospital, but yet you operate without vets? Just baffling how disgusting this buisness is. After suffering for a week my dog ended up being put to sleep due to thir negligence. Avoid this place at all cost if you love your pet. read more

American Animal Hospital - A few days post surgery my dog developed a severe infection. - Veterinarians Near Me - Queens, New York

This place looks to rip you off at any cost, even if the cost is your animal's well being. My boyfriend and I took his dog in for an infection; the veterinary assistant (NOT even the vet himself) looked at our dog and quickly made the diagnosis of anal abscess, okay seemed reasonable. He then went on to say that an emergency surgery was required and that we needed to leave the dog there overnight and wrote us up an estimate for $2000. The first red flag was the urgency of it. Our dog didn't seem to be in excruciating pain, only mild discomfort. When we asked if we could wait until the morning to bring him in, he quickly shot us down and looked to place blame and fear. He told us that if we waited and the infection got worse overnight and then he needed not one, BUT TWO surgeries, that it would be our fault. Seemed more like he wanted to charge us for an overnight kennel than to genuinely help our dog. He also kept adding on charges; IV, overnight stay, anesthesia, blood-work, updating vaccines, antibiotics. I've had multiple dogs and have been to quite a few vets so I understand that just like the regular medical system, charges can add up but never have I seen a bill continually expand into so many separate categories for what seemed like a mild infection. My boyfriend and I at that point already didn't trust the situation. We were already being given a bill and yet we hadn't even seen the actual doctor. So I decided to call my usual vet (who I've used for my two dogs) to get an estimate over the phone. On the phone they told me that IF the dog did need that type of surgery, it would come out to $800-$1000 total (NOT $2000), they also went on to say that the vet would need to look at the dog because surgery is really the last resort and might not be necessary. I told the assistant thank you but no thank you, we were just going to pay the visitation fee and go because I had gotten a better estimate from a vet whom I know and trust. We paid the bill and got ready to leave. Suddenly at the news of losing business, the ACTUAL vet finally appeared and asked to speak with us. He looked at the bill and pretended that the assistant made a "mistake" with the numbers. He said that the assistant overcharged and that it would be a few hundred less. How convenient that once he found out he was going to lose business the dollars suddenly melted off, what a silly mistake! Almost seems as if we not said we were leaving, he would've left that "mistake" on the bill. So yea, not buying it. The vet was rude and completely transparent in trying to rip us off. So we left to the other vet. Turns out our dog didn't even need surgery. The second vet told us that while one side was abscessed, draining and antibiotic treatment is always the first option. Surgery is always the last option, only if treatment isn't working. You could tell he cared significantly more about animals and wasn't going to risk an unnecessary surgery just to make money. He expressed the anal glands and drained/lanced the infection and pumped it with antibiotics. He sent us home with a week's worth of antibiotics and said to come back if he wasn't better within 7-10 days. It has only been a day and he is already feeling better. This visit cost us $150 total, INSTEAD OF the $2000, which American Animal Hospital was going to charge us. I'd also like to note that at the American Animal Hospital on Northern they were going to administer vaccines the same day as surgery. As my other vet pointed out, you never give vaccines to a person/animal who doesn't feel well. The same way you wouldn't take a child with a cold to get a flu shot, you wouldn't take an ill dog to get vaccines. But of course what do they care? It's entirely about being able to charge people for anything they can. Absolutely no regard for the animal's health. I would give zero stars if I could. read more

There are not enough words to describe my disappointment when visiting The Animal Clinic on Northern Blvd, a few days ago. The main waiting area looks like it hasn't been cleaned in months. I knew my visit wasn't going to be pleasant simply by the way I was greeted by the front desk attendant. She was not friendly nor sympathetic to our given situation with our dog, who clearly looked like she was in pain. She kept me waiting for over an hour for a 5 minute vet visit. The front desk attendant should be given a quick refresher on how to be a bit more professional. Please look for another place to take your pet. St. Marks vet or American vet??? Not really sure of the actual name of the place. This is the only negative review I have ever written about anything. We made an appointment for our dog after our usual vet couldn't accommodate us for the same day. Terrible, rude, nasty manner by the person behind the desk. After peppering us sarcastically with questions and looking annoyed that they did not know if our dog was microchipped (he is) this person came striding out from behind the desk in the lobby to scan his chip. Our dog was visibly anxious and growling. At our usual vet, they have friendly, warm, and skilled veterinary assistants who approach kindly and hold our dog firmly for his exam. This person demanded that my teenage son hold the 55 lb dog and when he had trouble doing so, she said, "Can't you hold your own dog?" I asked if they had a veterinary assistant to hold him and she said, "he's your dog" and said something to my son about he's a man he should be able to hold him. The dog was terrified and my son and I were confused and horrified. We walked out and didn't look back. I don't know how such an angry and rude person, who is completely lacking in interpersonal skills and kindness to animals, can be employed at a veterinary hospital. read more

I don't write reviews but this was a terrible place to take my cat. The doctor was on the phone ordering something while trying to hit an artery in his neck for a blood test. I've never heard of that! Usually it's from the paw. I told him to take his time and finish his call but he poked him two different times and missed the artery both times. Keep in mind that this is after a two hour wait with a cat who flips out in the car. I couldn't believe that a vet would do that. I picked up the cat and left because obviously this guy has some issues. The girl who was there was very nice and pretty much saw the same stuff I did. Last summer I came here to check up on my dog's ear infection. I had made appointment with to see a doctor and consult but guess who I saw, a front desk girl came seound to examine my dog. At first I thought she was just doing intial checkup but after 10 min I relaized, she is the "doctor" billed me for 150$ and said to come back again for checkup. Helll no!! First, the girls at the desk are great. I really like them, both are very nice and sweet.. So I have a regular vet for years but came here due to a minor thing as I could not get my vet right away. Dr. Elbasty said that my dog had a heart murmur grade 2. He gave me a price of what testing will cost and I declined it..then right away wanted to put him on heart medicine I told him no I do not want to buy any heart medicine as no testing was done to confirm this. I appreciate them seeing my dog right away for the minor issue and offering to lower the price on the medication cost.. but anything bigger I was going to my vet as I have had my share of vets that make me feel pressured into things and uncomfortable. I went to my regular vet she listened to his heart and heard a slight murmur nothing to be concerned about just yet. She took several xrays of his heart and it was fine, no blockage, all valves working good, she showed me the xrays. She said to come back and recheck in 6 months and she does not want to put him on any heart medicine and if she did, she would not put him on the one the Dr. gave me she said. Just saying its always good to get a 2nd opinion. I will have to recheck this murmur again soon and let you know if he does need meds and which ones she will put him on. read more

This place is by far the worst negligent vet office I've known. I took my four year old for an annual vaccine appointment and grooming with sedation, only to find out when I come to pick him up that his eye was cut and he needed stiches for two weeks. I was given no antibiotics and ended up calling the police to receive proper care for my puppy. Pls don't bring your little ones here. read more

However, they are not punctual people when it comes to opening up their practice. I would absolutely never recommend this place of business to ANYONE. I took my dog here on a Sunday ONLY because it was the only place open in my mother's neighborhood and my dog wasn't eating, had bad diarreah, and seemed highly dehydrated. I took her in and immediately they kept her to give her IV fluids...the doctor there on the weekend charged me for a test which was unnecessary (xray) which cost 250! Because he suspected she could possibly have an infection in her uterus. Clearly she didn't, she was only suffering from stomach problems. The staff there especially a young man named Frank (a vet tech) is SO rude and unprofessional. He was rude to the vet on site in front of me and was on his phone 90 percent of the time. After all of this was said and done the bill came out to 1,040.00...they are NEVER punctual..they tell you one thing and they do another. They constantly LIE! They keep your animal longer than they tell you they will...oh man the list goes on. Being that my dog was staying there I got her a dental cleaning and spayed, WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!! the only thing I haven't had an issue with is the dental cleaning up to this point because her spayed procedure has been horrible. She developed an infection after Dr Elbasty performed the procedure, I came back and he said it was seroma and the procedure usually cost 275 but he wasn't going to charge me (as if he's doing me a favor! Seriously you messed up so fix it) not to mention for the dental and the spayed I paid approximately 600$. When I complained to Dr Elbasty about his horrible employee Frank he listened and seemed to care and then offered me a 100 dollar credit which clearly the staff there never noted on my account because when I came back he had completely forgotten about it. This place is abolsuyely horrible PLEASE don't take your animal there!!! After my dog had to go under again to correct the issue of course they kept her longer then they said because apparently the doctor was running late but it's okay we won't charge you for another night. Absolutely horrendous! It's been 2 weeks since her stitches came out and she has a huge infected lump and when I called frank said, bring her in and I'll look at her and if she needs to stay then leave her and the doctor will do what he has to do. When I told him I don't feel comfortable with him looking at my animal he said ok. I told him I'd like to see the doctor himself and to give me an appointment he said ok, I told him a time and he proceeds to say bye and hangs up. Honestly yelpers this place needs to be shut down, Dr Elbasty acts like he loves what he does but you can tell he has lost his love for his profession and he is only in it to milk you for every dollar you have. Oh and mind you I'm going through cancer and as I'm concerned about my animal all he's asking me is about my diagnosis....SERIOUSLY?! If I can give this place no stars then that would be great. I took my dog in on a Wednesday night and was told he needed to stay overnight for some blood work and x-rays, etc. So the next day I called the place to check on my dog and was told the doctor hasn't arrived yet and told them I will be waiting for the Doctor's called. I waited all day and no phone call, the next day Friday i went in personally to see what was going on with my dog and was told the doctor hasn't been in yet. I told them I needed the doctor to call me to see what was happening to him. I waited all day Friday and came in on Saturday, they allowed me to see my dog and said everything was done but the doctor needed to speak to me before he can be released. I waited all day Saturday and did not get no phone call from them. I was already beginning to get angry because I didn't know what was going on with my dog , I wasn't getting any answers Sunday morning their website said they were open at 10 am and to my surprise I was there 10:15 and they were still closed. I left to work and called them at 1 pm and was told the Doctor isn't in and will need to stay another night, of course I was furious. I told them i didn't care if the doctor was in or not I'm taking my dog to another place. This is so sad, how can this place still function with the "DR" not being in when he's needed. I regret taking him to this place and read the reviews afterward. It's true how they charge you things that are not needed example Dental clean, BTW, when i did call saying I want to take him home they said i would need to come back and pick up his medication and speak to the DR, i told the assistant " How am i going to speak to the DR when he is never there?" the assistant replies " If i were you I'd tell him that because I agree with you". . . even the assistants there agree. that just tells you that this place is not worth bringing your love ones here (pets). On August 25 I my dog in because a continued ear infection that she has been battling for over a year. They started poking in her ear told me there's a lump we have to pull it out. They sedated her called me 3 hours later told me take her to a specialist. This is after $1,600.00 dollars later. She was still very sedated so question whether they should keep her for observation i was assured there was no need. Thee following morning I went to check my dog and she started yelping. I looked and she had what I thought was a small burn on her belly. I took pictures and emailed it to them questioning what happened to her. Few hours later they call me to tell me it was a heating blanket. My dog kept acting strange she would just stand and look into space. Days later she wasn't getting better so I took her to emergency at the Animal Hospital. They gave her pain medication and shaved her right side where the burn was. They brought her out to me and I couldn't believe the size of the burn. Her entire right side was burnt. I mean burnt. I wish I could post pictures here so you could see what they did to my dog. The hospital sent them photos of the burn and I sent today questioning how did this happen. I haven't heard from them. I have posted photos on Facebook So everyone can see the pain and stress my dog has and still is going through. I would not recommend anyone bring their pet here. read more

I have been bringing my schnauzer here for grooming ONLY for years.. always by Sara, she always does a great job. I called about a month ago to make an appointment with Sara and the person who answered said she was not there that week..she gave me the run around wether she still works there or not. Not a professional place at all. I made the mistake of bringing my dog anyways. I specified schnauzer cut, leave the beard long and the groomer even called to confirm how I wanted his hair. I dropped him off at 9am and they didn't call me to pick him up until 6:10pm..and they close at 6:30. When I picked him up they had shaved his whole beard off and one eyebrow longer than the other. Haircut aside..he had a cut on his rear, one in his ear and two on the inside of his legs...they didn't even address the cuts or said anything about them. Terrible experience for my dog! After waiting over a half an hour, some sort of Dr came out and abruptly told me the vet who sees hamsters wasn't there and I had to come back tomorrow. So I asked why I was given an appt for today, she said I don't know. It was a simple wound that either needed an antibiotic or not. Even I knew that. But this woman was rude and said she wasn't any good with hamsters, and I had to come back tomorrow. Yea like that was going to happen. I left and found another vet that took us in right away. NEVER TAKE YOUR PET HERE. THEY WILL CHARGE YOU AN ARM AND A LEG, GIVE IMPROPER TREATMENT AND PUT YOUR PET'S LIFE AT RISK. HERE;S JUST A SAMPLING OF WHAT THEY DID WRONG WITH MY BELOVED CAT. Were it not for another, fantastic vet, who charges reasonable prices and gives excellent treatment, the cat would have died totally unnecessarily. They gave anesthesia and a rabies vaccine to a sick cat, not helpful, to say the least. They did not give much needed fluids or appetites to the cat upon discharge, very much needed for an almost 17 year old cat with kidney problems. They kept the cat there for three day, far too long. They refused to release the cat's medical records to me or to the vet who is currently treating her. They gave no instructions for me. The technician, named Frank, the rudest, nastiest, most incompetent person whom I have ever met, told me that I needed to find out what the cat should eat on the internet. How ludicrous! How can I use the internet to find out specific information about a specific cat with a specific condition. I waited for than 3 hours for the cat to be discharged and was not even allowed to visit the cat during that time. Frank lied to me and told me that it is illegal for vets to give medical records to pet owners. I checked out the information and found out, not at all surprisingly, that the opposite is true. Vets Must release medical records to cat owners upon request. And what are they hiding? Why are they refusing to release the medical records, along with the blood work, to the vet who is now treating my cat. This is not only a violation o law, but of professional ethics. Furthermore, when I asked for the records, I was initially told that the computer was frozen, a convenient, very feeble excuse. Frank refused to answer my questions and even refused to answer the phone. He actually locked the door so that the pet owners could not visit their pets. I had no opportunity to see or even speak to the doctor once the cat was released. He suddenly became totally unavailable. The bill, a whopping $1600 for treatment that almost killed the cat. She became ill once again less than 2 weeks after she was released. And they claimed they were giving me a 20 percent discount. I have already complained to the Better Business Bureau, requesting a full refund. Tomorrow, I plan to file a complaint with the New York State licensing bureau. This is malfeasance, and it sucks, and that's being polite. Please requests refunds and complain to the State Licensing Department, too. I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about. I've been bringing my dog here for about a year. She's seen two out of the three vets. We've interacted with many of the techs and other office staff as well. Everyone has been professional, polite and friendly with me. They go out of their way to soothe my nervous pup too, because she's always fretful at the vet. They've even helped me file pet insurance claims! If my dog has a condition to treat (non-routine check-up), I feel they are up front about cost and reasonably priced for NY. Should your pet have a medical condition, they offer and make available expensive options side by side with alternate, more cost effective options. I've never felt that they are trying to "sell" me something my dog didn't need. They call the day after visits to follow up and see if my dog is okay, which is a reassuring gesture. My dog has visited so far for vaccines, medical concerns and grooming. My only complaint is pertaining to her grooming. There were some charges tacked on to that which I wasn't expecting. Not crazy costly, but still surprising. Also, it was suggested that I not bring her back for future grooming services because she was too frightened and erratic during the bath and that I should bathe her at home instead. While this may have been true, this might also be because of the handler/groomer. My dog has been groomed elsewhere several times since then and everything is fine. But still, as a customer you never want to be told "don't come back" no matter what the context. All in all, I mainly need them to take care of my dog's medical needs which they do quite well. I will certainly continue to take my dog there for the vet, but I'll pass on the grooming. I make appointments with Dr. Shark when possible and highly recommend him. Lastly, they have evening and Saturday hours which is a must for those with a 9-5 schedule. read more

I've been taking my dog to see Dr. Elbasty for 3 years now and I have nothing but good things to say about the man. He's extremely knowledgeable, patient, and I know he truly cares for my dog. In that time my dog has had everything from dental issues and needed surgery to just plain old check ups. The only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 is because in that time they have had a turnover of staff and I have had unpleasant interactions with a few of the newer people. When I first started going there the staff was amazing. Now I feel like it depends on the day I go and who I talk to. Nobody is ever rude, but I think they just lack customer service skills/etiquette. But Dr. Elbasty himself is 5 stars in my opinion. read more

I personally do not recommend this place. The only reason why I ever came here was b/c its close to my house & to avoid the hassle of having to travel with my pet. Ive recently been trying out different vets & i am disgusted of how badly i've let this place take my money. Ive walked out of here with a bill of $600+ only to keep finding myself coming back with my pet for the same problem. Not only do they run a whole bunch of UNNECESSARY tests but they never tell you what you should be doing to resolve the issue!! (Ofcourse bcus they want you to keep coming back) Anyways heres an example........ one time i brought my pet in & he had injured himself so they had to shave the hair off that particular spot & they charged me $50!!! Just for doing that! Thats how much i pay my groomer & recently the new vet I've been trying out had to do the same & i had asked if they were going to charge me for that & they looked at me funny & said to me "no thats something that needs to be done which is the purpose of the consultation fee" its just so terrible to know that some vets all they do is take advantage of the love you have for your pet that they will charge you crazy fees knowing you're willing to pay it! Also I did see another HUGE difference, the new vet I'm trying out did a lot more physical checking on my pet & took their time to get some background info on my pets daily routine, food, etc. only giving them 3 starts for their kindness read more
