So far, so good. I was in the market for a new dermatologist. Not because there was anything wrong with mine, but because I simply don't want to go into Manhattan unless I have to these days. This office came highly recommended by my wife, who has excellent taste in everything except husbands. They had spotted a problem she wasn't even there to see them about, and solved an issue she'd been having for years. That was enough to give it a shot. Heights Dermatology is a clean, well-appointed office that is housed in the garden level apartment of a brownstone in a conveniently walkable location for me. The intake folks at the front desk are nice, and the friendly PA took me in, got me settled, and joked around with me. After a decent wait, I got to see the doctor. David Avram was nice, personable, and a little rushed, as most doctors seem to be these days. He didn't seem to know if I was a new patient or not, but he did thoroughly check my skin for any issues, and took the time to give me advice on how to approach things going forward. I've got no complaints thus far, and I plan to keep coming back in for an annual screening. I can also get very good dumplings nearby, which is a bonus selling point. read more

Seems like as time goes on this once great office is run like a factory. Most of the new reviews are1 star, that is because the doctor is always in a rush and will leave you bleeding to death. I have been going to this office for many years, and it makes me sad to write this review. My husband went here for moh's surgery and the doctor cut a small artery, that small artery bled for 4 weeks and Dr. Avram sent him to a plastic surgery to repair what he did. It is now 6 weeks, and he has to return to the other doctor almost weekly, now every 2 to 3 weeks. I have attached pictures of what was done to my husband. read more

Was greeted with hostility from the start by who I assume was the OM since she was talking down to the front staff (mind you, this was the first time meeting anyone at this practice) The office seemed very disorganized and you could tell off the bat that there is lack of communication between staff and patients. When they say people only bother to leave negative reviews, this must apply to doctors more than restaurants. Who gets joy from seeing your dermatologist? I certainly don't. But I like good skin and frown on melanomas so I have been a patient at Heights for about 20 years. They have provided me with professional, competent care for a variety of conditions. The doctors are always nice to me. The rest of the staff is far better than average (have you been to NYC doctors' offices?!?) Are they perfect all the time? I came here to see Dr. Robert Finney about my acne i get every time when the weather changes. He gave me some suggestions and pointers to use at home and my daily skin routine. He speaks so quick so if you tell him to slow it down he will . I think he knows he comes off as a rambler. The service was good and fast , i hate doing paperwork so when i booked online the question they needed i answered through via Zoc doc and when i checked for my appointment all they needed was for me to confirmed. And BOOM few moments after i was seeing Dr. Robert Finney The offices is spacious and very clean, they don't offer any complimentary beverage, but you won't be sitting for long once you alert to the receptionist you're present. Dr. David Avram has been my dermatologist for 17 years. The first 14 years were good, I was happy with him. About 3-4 years ago I noticed a deterioration in his bedside manners. I had a burn 3-4 years ago, he saw me and told me to come again on a certain day and time. When I came back on time (never late) I wasn't seen for an hour, which was unusual. I inquired at the front desk, and 15 minutes later he saw me - he entered the room and asked me abruptly "What do you want?!" I was shocked and told him he wanted to see me today at this hour. He forgot, apparently. He collected himself, did not apologize and did the wound cleaning. I only made a mental note of the incident at the time. More recently I had a recurring wart that required repeat treatments every few weeks. Dr. David Avram eventually seemed to become fed up with my wart, though it made me a frequent flier at his office, and implied that maybe I could take care of it myself (?) My frame of reference of the quality of the simple wart freezing he gave me is how another dermatologist treated it later, because I had to go to someone else eventually - Dr. David Avram was brutal and impatient. The other dermatologist was more gentle, did it in 5 minutes instead of 2 and unlike Dr. David Avram did not cause it to bleed, which makes a difference for the likelihood of a recurrence. Wart management can be done by an assistant, and if the dermatologist does like doing it he can train an assistant. Lastly, I had a rash that got infected. Dr. David Avram treated the infection correctly, but could not diagnose the rash itself and suggested it may be herpetic, which is absurd based on several aspects (I am an MD and later had the input of other dermatologists). I was eventually told what I suspected all along, which was that the dermatologists in this practice specialize in Cosmetic Dermatology. That is a tricky issue. As an MD I know that partners and doctors employed by a practice are pressured to do procedures that bring more income to the practice, that is true everywhere. My insurance pays about $60 for a visit, including my copay (though wart treatment is considered a surgical procedure and they charge more than double for that, not bad for 5 minutes). Cosmetic procedures bring in more than 100 times more. But if they feel they reached the point where it's beneath them to spend any time on $60 - $130 procedures they can refuse to take any commercial insurance. I suppose the stream of regular patients provides a source of patients for expensive cosmetic procedures. It is unacceptable that a practice bills itself as DERMATOLOGY and laser, whereas they really want only the cosmetic patients. I went eventually to another dermatologist (see my reviews) who diagnosed my rash correctly as multifocal pigmented bullous fixed drug eruption. Dr Avram is great but the ongoing issues with rude staff is horrible and just unacceptable at this point. Been going here for many years and spent alot of money and I think I have had enough. I received a call from the office to reschedule my appointment because the dr had a conflict . I called to reschedule - After I asked what time on a certain date was available she said "I told you , 3pm" I mean really? Saw Dr Watkins for hair loss (who is supposedly specialist, who studied under the hair loss expert, Dr Avram) and an issue with a fingernail. For the nail issue, she referred me to a nail dermatologist. What the heck is THAT? Oh that's someone that Is connected to heights dermatologist but doesn't take insurance. Mind you, it wasn't a catastrophic issue that needed a so-called nail dermatologist. Just cut off a piece and send it to a lab. Duh. As for my hair loss, she said I should take oral minoxidil. I asked if she could order a blood test to see what the cause could be and she said no. SHE SAID NO. She then referred me to a primary doctor who can order a blood test. Guess what? That doctor doesn't take insurance either. So if you're looking for a Dermatologist that cannot help you AT ALL, then dr Watkins is for you! read more

the office staff aren't super pleasant and honestly a little stuffy - they could also do with better reading material for the wait, but the actual practice is pretty good and Dr Avram himself is awesome. I had an appointment, was a new patient, only had to fill out a few fast forms (had sent my stuff over via ZocDoc beforehand) and I believe the wait was only 15 minutes or so - not bad. As mentioned, Dr Avram is awesome. He listens, understood my situation, agreed with my choice of treatment, was very accommodating and reasonable and offered some solid advice. Dr. Avram was pleasant and I felt confident in his diagnosis. The 3 stars are because of the total experience, in particular the very, very long wait times. During both visits I had to wait 40-60 minutes. To their credit, when I complained the second time, the receptionist waived my copay for the visit. Still, while I understand that a physician's schedule cannot always be accurately projected, close to an hour wait is not ok. I'll be going back because I like the doctor, but please try to manage the schedule better. read more

I sent my husband here for an issue that came suddenly so figured we'd get it checked out before it got worse. Dr. Avram had terrible bedside manner, gave my husband in inaccurate diagnosis, barely spent any time listening to his concerns. We did not fill the prescription for meds he suggested as we knew right away he was wrong. Luckily we went to an experienced dermatologist in Manhattan the day after and were given a more accurate diagnosis and intervention. Agree with Kurell below. My doctor (young guy in the header photo is great), but the staff is consistently rude and incompetent. 1. It is virtually impossible to get anyone on the phone, unless you're calling to make an appointment. Calling to check in on a prescription? Get ready to leave a voicemail that is never answered and don't bother waiting for a call back--you won't get one. 2. Why is the attitude from everyone who works the front desk necessary? 3. Getting a prescription sent to the pharmacy is never as simple as it being sent the same day the Dr. prescribes it (for a Rx already approved by insurance). EVERY SINGLE TIME, getting a prescription has required me going back to Heights Derm and waiting for them to put in the order while I stand there because the pharmacy has either not received the prescription or has not been had their call returned when they've called HD. Whether it's an online pharmacy or the pharmacy down the street, HD staff refuses to call back or straighten things out unless you go in person to harangue them. Often, I've had to go back and forth from the pharmacy and HD multiple times. I chose this place because it's close to my office, but, after two years, my last "ask" of them will be to have my records sent to my new dermatologist. It's a shame because I liked my doctor, but it's not worth putting up with the staff. read more

I'm surprised to read about the 25 minute wait complain - really? That's nothing. Some doctors' offices make you wait MUCH longr. So yesterday was the first visit. Took my 5 year old and let me tell you - considering they ARE Harvard trained and having worked with various doctors enough to know how stuck up they can be, Dr. Avram was SO nice and professional and seemed very genuine. I've gone to Heights Dermatology twice and met with Dr. Marc Avram both times. I've found him to be personable, competent, and the office is pretty nice. The first time I went in things were a bit rushed. I would have given 3 stars max. What I needed was very cut-and-dry, so no big deal, but I definitely felt that time was at a premium. On the second visit I talked to the doc for awhile and found him very personable. Nice guy, grounded. I mentioned some concern about a small skin growth, and he cut the damn thing off right then in about 3 minutes, no extra charge, no pain, no problems. I was impressed. I'm guessing that could have been a full-on procedure if he wanted to charge. The guy likes his work. read more

If it was possible to give Zero stars I would. My first visit and last visit there was on Thursday. I saw the doctor, he was great but the staff and the service is the worst I have evwr experienced! The nurse is wayyy to stupid to properly send a Rx to the Pharmacy. I realized this after standi g on a long line at Rite Aid to pick up a prescription thats not even there. They was already closed Friday night so I had to wait till Saturday AM to complain. When I called the receptionist got an attitude with me cause she felt like it was too early in the AM to be yelling (thats what she said) then hangs up on me. This office has the WORST staff ever!!!!! The doctors are fine once you see them, but (1) having to make an appt days in advance for a cortisone shot is ridiculous when the doctors TELL YOU that you can just call anytime you need one and then (2) being told after you've waited 45 minutes in the middle of your work day that it will be ANOTHER 15-20 minutes or you can come back 4 days later for said schedule appointment is infuriating. And the staff is totally rude about it. The issue I've had with them is getting someone to call me back after i've left voicemails with insurance questions/questions about test results. I saw Doctor David Avram last week for the first time, for an annual skin screening (moles) and removing warts. The clinic is very clean and pleasant, the receptionist was especially nice, as well as the medical assistant. Dr. Avram was extremely kind, patient and very knowledgable. he explained in details the process of the check up (in a calm and relaxing way). I will certainly go back for my annuals, as well as other dermatological needs. read more
