Beware: Handling food with bare hands... Ordered 2 sandwiches over the phone for pick-up but they mistakenly thought I only ordered 1 ( not a big deal ) but while I waiting for the 2nd sandwich I saw the man making sandwiches WAS NOT WEARING GLOVES! He was handling bread with his bare hands... I did see another worker wearing gloves while he was mixing a batter so they do supply gloves but obviously don't care about food handling safety or the fact that we are living in a pandemic. If this guy can't be bothered to wear gloves it leads one to believe he can't be bothered to wash his hands after using the restroom. Lastly, my sandwiches were made with day old bread which is hilarious cause they are a bakery.. Since this establishment doesn't have a website or contract info I reached out to their IG to give the owner a opportunity to fix this or at the very least bring this to her attention but no response. Their BLT is probably one of the top 5 in Los Angeles. Each component is perfected and the taste is unreal. Fresh, crispy, salty, sweet.. umami all the way! Pizza was one of the worst I've ever had. Not sure how a bakery at this level allows something that bad out of their kitchen. Don't bother. All other sandwiches are good (said with high pitched voice) but nothing to come back to. The location is nestled in a quaint tree laden combo loft/ business structure with ample parking right in the middle of the best part of adorable South Pasadena. Walking through the glass doors one is greeted with a large blackboard menu displaying all the wonderful offerings as well as large display cases filled with freshly baked pasties and sumptuous desserts. The strawberry rhubarb pie and key lime are standouts among many vegan offerings as well. The staff are plentiful attentive and kind. Teran, Daniella, Sally the owner work every day to bring fresh delicious salads and pressed sandwiches to life. The breakfast is stupendous. Each bite to be savored. The sandwiches and other offerings are also high quality. I love the turkey, avocado and jack cheese sandwich. But be careful, the full size is huge. I usually add bacon. The cost? Not inexpensive, but I don't mind paying more for quality, taste and consistent freshness. Service? .... fair to good, but on occasion I've noticed it taking a bit for orders to be brought out even when they are not busy. This place is so close to the gold line in south pas. I'm tempted to make this a ritual of coming for weekend brunch or something. I came with a friend and we sat on the patio for lunch. We got a turkey pesto sandwich and another sandwich that I'm completing blanking on the name for right now! Sorry! :( We liked the pesto a lot- to me the basil really stood out and it was almost kind of minty. It pretty large as well, so if you're not super hungry a couple of friends could split the sandwich. The other sandwich was also a turkey sandwich with lots of cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and dijon spread. I liked it but the cheese made it very heavy and the bread was a touch too soggy. So I'll skip that one next time. We also got key lime pie and a massive mexican chocolate pie. The key lime is to die for. After eating the slice, I wanted a whole pie to myself. The mexican chocolate pie is very rich and semi sweet. I did enjoy it but once slice is definitely too much for one person! Definitely would recommend coming here for a nice patio lunch! read more

I've been coming here for some time now. Every time the experience has been great except today. Waited at a dirty table. Server notice the dirty table but doesn't come to remove the dishes. He comes back with our food but there isn't any place to put the new dishes on the table. So he hands them to my wife and nephew. The server NEVER comes back! Had to go get new employee to come clean the table and she doesn't come out either. So I hand to go bus a different dirty table because it he less plates. Clean the table before we could eat our meal. I will still come to this establishment, I'm hoping the management will read this and train the service staff better. The kitchen does great job. My wife and I were in South Pasadena for breakfast today. Mike and Anne's was very good and we will be back. I wish I could say the same thing for Heirloom Bakery. It took a little while to get someone's attention even though we were standing right in front of the bakery case and then they couldn't understand my wife's english when she asked if they had something we could use as "burger buns". They did but as it turned out they weren't very good. I would describe them as being dry and bland. Oh well, that was an experiment that didn't work out. The real problem was with the coconut cake that looked so alluring in the case. On the outside it looked like a classic white coconut cake. One of my very favorites! I like it so much that usually it doesn't even have to be that great for me to still be happy. It looked like it had some king of filling so just to be safe I asked what it was and was told it was lemon. I thought that sounded pretty tasty and the way the cake was cut on the stand it looked like we could share a piece for after dinner. When we went to eat the cake the filling wasn't lemon it was custard. The cake wasn't sweet. The frosting wasn't sweet. The custard wasn't sweet or good. And to top it all off the piece we saw in the case had been cut in half. At least we didn't have to throw as much away. For me to throw a piece of coconut cake away is really extreme. In conclusion; we weren't impressed with the customer service or the product. read more

Maybe it's that I'm food safety certified, but when I arrived, I just had this feeling of sloppiness. The presentation of the dishes are great, and I hear their food is decent. I ordered a hazelnut macchiato with a side of yogurt. My macchiato was served in a huge mug just like Central Perk from Friends. :) It had a strong flavor, but the hazelnut wasn't present at all in the coffee. Heirloom is a wholesome little café that's pretty popular during weekend brunch hours. A lot of ppl come here with kids or dogs, so it can be hard to find a table especially at the outdoor area. I do like the food here, it's decent. Don't expect a mind-blowing meal, and you'll be fine. It's a nice option to have if you live around the area. I've had the breakfast sandwich (4 stars), omelet plate (2.5 stars), and eggs w/ bacon breakfast plate (2.5 stars). I wish they have more bread options. They serve this good quality artisan bread with the breakfast sandwich and with most brunch entrees, but somehow they're always over-toasted. It's hard to eat and not as enjoyable when the bread is so crusty. This is more of a hipster joint, not the traditional mom-n-pop diner. They have a lot of healthy choices. For the last several years Heirloom So. Pasadena has consistently been a 5 but the last 3 times I've ordered my favorite sandwich -- the French Chicken -- it has been disappointing. Lately it's had half the usual amount of chicken, dry bead an little dressing. It falls apart completely when I pick it up. No longer the excellent experience it once was. Got my brunch on at heirloom cafe. Very home-y vibe to it. I liked it. There's a parking structure right next to the business or there's plenty of street parking nearby. The staff were nice. It was our first time there, so we didn't really know where to order. After a few minutes of standing around, someone finally directed us where to order. We got the Caprese and the Cuban. Both were pretty good. I don't think I would get the same thing next time. I will probably lean toward the breakfasts instead of the sandwiches. I also tried the curry flavored quinoa. It was decent. I've tried a curry favor quinoa at another place which was amazing, so didn't really expect the taste I got from Heirloom. Which doesn't mean it was bad, just different. I am not really sure what the fascination of this place is. I think the location is great to watch the light rail trains pass by, but getting through the trains may be somewhat annoying. I was able to find street parking, but there is also a garage adjacent to the bakery. I ordered a plain breakfast with eggs, potatoes, bacon, etc. Unfortunately, it just did not impress me. The food was bland. I would have rather spent that money at Mike and Anne's (down the street) where I know their breakfast is superior. I did like the coffee though as it was strong, but pricey. Also, I noticed that there were many flies outside as I sat outside. It was annoying to swat those flies away from my food. read more
