I have been eating at Heirloom since 2015 when I was a college student at Ohio State. I would spend all of my Buck-ID cash here instead of spending it on laundry because it's that good. It has maintained its charm and quality of food in the nearly decade that I have been coming here. I really believe that anything you get here will be good, even my dad likes it which is saying a lot! It has carried me through many phases of life - this place is great for all types of eaters! First of all, gotta love a hidden spot on campus to eat lunch. This place gets pretty busy though! They are pretty much Farm to table which is a growing trend! Everything is fresh and really delicious. I got a grilled chicken sandwich (can't remember the exact name on the menu) with a side of fruit and an iced coffee. Phenomenal. The sandwich was flavorful and really juicy. The Fruit came with apples and pineapple! A nice surprise, since apples typically are not given because they are expensive. They have me some nice chunks of it though! The iced coffee wasn't strong, but it wasn't crap and I would order it again! Service was awesome! The gal at the register was so friendly and so nice! All the workers had smiles on their faces, so I'm guessing this is the coolest place to work on campus!! Prices are a little elevated, but that's how it is when you pay for fresh food! I'm into it! Heirloom was a pleasant surprise in the Wexner Center. It's a counter service place but the food is much better than you think it will be. The restaurant is operated by the same folks that created Northstar. It has great vegetarian selections and has an overall healthy menu. They also have their own garden plus they recycle everything with absolutely no waste. I like everything I've tried here. The complaint is that it's pretty expensive. That's expected with the Wexner Center location. It's not cheap but it's still mostly worth it. The vegan breakfast burrito is $9. It comes with broccoli, potatoes, roasted red peppers, soy sausage, and tofu. The hummus and vegetable plate is about $7. I like the quinoa salad. This can be ordered without the chicken. The nachos are good but they're more than $9. It seems more than a bit much for the portion. The Thai peanut Luna burger is about $10. It comes with arugula, cilantro slaw, and sweet chili sauce. They have an extensive menu of coffees, espressos, and lattes each about $3. They have craft beer for $2.50 and wine for $5. It's also 10% off for students and Wexner Center members. This is nice to visit after the museum. I think this is one of the best restaurants on campus. It's great to see a restaurant take care of the environment. This is recommended if you like Northstar and looking for a few new items to try. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Heirloom. The menu has a lot of choices, including breakfast all day, sandwiches, salads, and entrees. Many ingredients are locally sourced, such as the poultry and Luna Burgers - and I love that this concept is being integrated even more into the museum via the sustainable urban garden just outside the Wex. There is a lot of variety in the menu, and even more common dishes have special twists, like the arugula and pickled red onion topping on the Chipotle Buffalo Chicken. The food options are also very accommodating for vegetarians and gluten free choices - just ask at the counter for the list of gf options, if desired - which even includes several desserts from the case! On our most recent visit, my husband enjoyed the Chipotle Buffalo Chicken with kettle chips, and I had the Eye Opener Burrito sans tortilla to make it gluten free. We both loved our dishes. I loved the use of chorizo sausage in the burrito, and it was served with some great hot sauce and salsa to add as desired. The sandwiches come with a number of options for the side, including salad, kettle chips, fruit, and something called "The Grainy," which is described as grains with veggies that change periodically. While it is a touch pricey, I wouldn't consider it cost prohibitive, particularly given the focus on local ingredients and the location inside a museum. There is plenty of seating and wifi too. Definitely a solid place for campus. As a student, I frequent heirloom often. It's a great spot to study and a great place to get some snacks and drinks. The space is huge, clean, and has plenty of outlets. The food is a little pricey, but I love that they have a ton of vegetarian options. The coffee drinks are pretty average--nothing amazing, but does the trick. I like that they have a bottomless coffee mug option as well. In terms of the food, I love their house salad dressing. Kimberly and John's cafe Heirloom is the oasis in the colossal food desert called the OSU campus. Nestled in the belly of the Wexner Center, Heirloom is as every bit a masterpiece as the work that hangs on the walls adjacent to the seating area. I am so convinced at the quality of the cafe's daily offerings, that if YOU don't love what you are eating there, I will refund your money. I have had the pleasure of sharing words with Chef John a few times about their mission, and the food is not only top notch, but the philosophy put into the operation is one of care, nutrition, environmentalism, and integrity. And it makes the food taste as good as it does. This is an unusual review considering I haven't been there today, but I felt compelled to give this a shout as I haven't yet. Items I have had there include a beautiful summer tomato salad with Roquefort blue, and egg and bacon sandwich where the bacon was so thick it could have replaced the bread! I have also had a tofu vegetarian bowl that was delicious as well as the sweet potato and bean breakfast burrito. Everything is wonderfully prepared, fresh and very flavorful. It's independently operated and serves fresh local fair as well as a wide variety of drinks, including tea and coffee. Very impressive on-campus dining from OSU! As a Penn State grad (and employee now), I can never get too close to Ohio State. But that changed today when I was in Columbus and decided to check out top vegetarian restaurants. They Tofu Gyro sounded intriguing to me, so I took the leap and went. I love this little place! Tucked away under the Wexner Art Museum, they consistently put out great food. The atmosphere is fun (there are usually professors meeting with colleagues, some graduate students working while downing tons of coffee, etc. but not packed with undergrads) and everything I've tried so far has been delicious. The Quinoa Salad with chicken sounds very simple, but somehow is one of the best salads I've EVER had! I love that you can get breakfast all day -- I had an egg sandwich with vegan sausage for lunch the other day and it was great! I'm not vegan, but i definitely recommend trying that sausage. Their desserts are AMAZING. I bought one to share with a friend, but it happened to disappear before I got back to my office... It's easy to access as an OSU student, but I don't know how parking would be for someone not affiliated with the university. Regardless, it would certainly be worth the trip! read more

I've had Heirloom bookmarked for about a year because on paper--it sounds amazing and right up my alley. But then I looked at the location and saw it was ON CAMPUS. Since I'm in my 30s and have absolutely no reason to be on campus, I figured I would never actually eat here. I mean--who wants to see the old creep on campus eating alone? Okay, maybe I'm sensationalizing things a bit... Then a few weeks ago I had a meeting on campus, and you better believe I took that rare opportunity to finally try Heirloom. It's at the bottom of the Wex, so that made me feel a little better and less creepy. And since this building is a place that non-students could actually go, I would even consider coming back sans student. Everything about Heirloom felt like a Northstar built for OSU: organic, natural goodness served in creative and delicious dishes. And just like NS, the prices are a bit more than what students are used to paying on campus. I ordered a chicken dish with veggies, rice, and a coconut sauce. My pal got a salad with tofu. My dish was plentiful, colorful, and tasty. The sauce was a bit thick, but that wasn't a big deal. My friend's salad was big, and she loved it. I was a bit confused about whether I should bus my own table or not, and the answer is--(just like Northstar) they will clear your dishes for you. So the moral of the story here is: treat Heirloom as if Northstar's cousin was built in the bottom of the Wex, and you'll be just fine. read more

I come to heirloom all the time to study while I'm on campus. The atmosphere here is excellent because it is clean, simple, modern and relaxed. This is probably the most expensive place to eat on campus, but also the healthiest (and has vegan options). One of the biggest perks for me is that heirloom has interesting customers. It doesn't get crowds of freshman students during class breaks because they don't accept the meal blocks, and commonly I overhear languages I cannot identify or conversations on topics I've never considered. So true confession: Maybe it's the best study spot in town because I feel intellectual while I briefly eaves drop on the other customers as they pass through for lunch or a snack. Besides that, I've never eaten something here I didn't enjoy. Their food is always fresh and innovative, and the coffee and espresso drinks are amazing (and they have my beloved almond milk!). read more

Beware of bringing your own mug to the counter. Mine was rejected. I'm a student at OSU visiting the Heirloom Cafe for my second time. I ordered the Asian Salad and it was pretty delicious (though nothing special for $10) I was however disappointed at how I was treated by the manager and staff. When I presented my 20 oz. to-go mug to the cashier for a coffee fill (not even a refill), she turned to the manager who looked at it and said "uh-uh, we filled that for you yesterday but not anymore." (They had indeed filled it for me once yesterday). "You will have to use one of our mugs." Then the cashier said that "it used up half their coffee pot." (They only brew 40 oz. at a time?) I was not asked if that was okay, nor was I apologized to, or offered any sort of compromise, concession, or even an explanation by the manager; she simply dismissed me with her eyes and went back to whatever she was doing. When I asked the cashier if they could just fill it halfway, I was told no, but that if I wanted to I could dump their mug back into my mug myself. Which I did, rather than walk off carrying two mugs, a plate (I also got a cookie), and my table number (they give you a number to display on your table to receive your order). I felt pretty silly dumping their mug into mine in front of everyone behind me in line. The menu advertises "bottomless" mugs of coffee (which I took to mean $2.30 for all-you-can-drink coffee during your stay), but apparently that does not extend to 20 oz at a time (the large mugs are 16 oz according to the menu). I saw no notice stating that to-go cups are prohibited. I really have no idea why I was denied an extra 4 oz of coffee when refills are supposedly free. I feel that I was flat out treated unfairly and rudely over something that their cafe allegedly offers on their menu. Especially since I wasn't just getting coffee, but also a large salad and pastry. I have never had this issue at any other cafe that I have brought my 20 oz. mug to. This will be my final visit to the Heirloom Cafe and I give it two stars due to my experience of poor service, unfriendly staff, and deceptive menu. read more

Heirloom is easily the best eatery on campus. Gone are the same wilted salads, dry sandwiches, and frostbit vegetable trays, and in it's place are fresher and more creative options. In addition to creativity, there is an emphasis on using fresh and local ingredients, which is respectable I think. Yes, it is a bit pricier than your regular campus fare, but to be fair, campus food is expensive to begin with, and I would rather pay $8 for am unbelievably delicious Breakfast Stir-Fry than $6 for a roast beef sandwich. In other words, you get what you pay for. While it may get busy at lunch time, it has plenty of seating, and once lunch rush finishes up, it ends up being a nice place to relax, and makes for an appropriate study space. Also, it's situated next to the art gallery, so it's perfect for a date or hangout. Heirloom is something special on an otherwise almost inedible oasis, so try it out! read more

I appreciate that Heirloom tries to offer fresh, seasonal food in the midst of the campus sea of fried foods and cheap pizza- BUT their execution is poor. The prices are too high for what you're actually receiving on the plate. Everything from coffee to salads to pasta feels like it's been slapped together in a rush. My biggest issue with Heirloom is that they don't list all the components of their food, which is misleading and potentially very troublesome for people with food allergies. I recently ordered the ratatouille, and the only ingredients listed were veggies- I expected the soup-style ratatouille I am accustomed to. The latest eatery at the Wexner Center is called Heirloom. The name comes from a word used to describe a type of vegetable or plant with desirable qualities that can be maintained through propagation. This café does indeed have many desirable qualities worth cultivating! I recently had the chance to try the quiche of the day (corn and mild green chile) accompanied by a fresh fruit salad and an "espresso Cubano" (espresso + cane sugar). The quiche arrived piping hot and everything was delicious. The espresso Cubano was around $2 and my total was around $8. I look forward to making my way through their menu. The café menu focuses on fresh, healthful offerings: breakfast dishes (available all day), soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, baked goods, and more. According to chef John Skaggs "We plan to source ingredients locally and seasonally as much as possible, using small Ohio farms and heirloom vegetables to produce flavorful, and affordable, meals." They are currently open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays, with occasional extended hours for special events at the Wexner Center. This is my only complaint - the limited hours mean I will have limited opportunities to dine here. Such is the nature of a cafe housed in an art museum. I can't say enough good things about Heirloom Cafe. I've heard others discredit it for being too expensive (and yes, it's about$1-$2 more expensive than nearby lunch spots), but at Heirloom you absolutely get what you're paying for. The food is fresh, flavorful and healthy (except desserts, of course). The ambience is wonderful, and the staff is friendly. I always leave heirloom feeling full but not weighed down. They have vegan, vegetarian, and meaty options and they're all tasty. They serve breakfast all day, as well as cafe drinks such as espresso. Beer and wine, too. My top recommendation: try the cubasian, a breakfast stir fry dish that is slightly spicy and tasty any time of day. If you're at OSU and hungry, this is where you need to go. A string of businesses have held this space downstairs and around the corner at the Wexner Center. Heirloom has had it for a couple of years and looks like it won't be going anywhere. The menu is plentiful and varied, including breakfast (served all day) and lunch dishes both. There are coffee and tea, of course, but also wine and beer. Service is fast and friendly. A few different menu items were specifically marked vegan, so I gave the "vegan eye opener burrito" a try. So good. Both Luna crumbles and tofu in the same burrito, along with potatoes and fresh - very fresh - broccoli, in a spinach wrap. And then it was toasted. Good salsa on the side. It didn't look very filling when it arrived, but it was exactly enough. There were many omnivore items on the menu, as well, all looking just as fresh as they came out of the kitchen and headed to the tables. Good place to bring a book and look studious or meet up with friends on campus. If you are not part of OSU, I found the closest parking to be at meters on 15th Ave, across High St. Much cheaper than campus parking, too. Course it's a one-way street in the less helpful direction, so you may need to drive around the block, but that seems to have ensured a large number of empty spots there. If you *are* part of OSU... don't graduate/retire without grabbing breakfast or lunch here at least once. read more

I've eaten here a couple of times and each time I find something new to like. In the past I've had their Buffalo chicken sandwich which is fantastic, the Buffalo sauce is spicy and sweet and homemade. Last night, I had the BLP. It's your standard BLT but with roasted red pepper instead of tomatoes. It was great! The bacon was thick and very crispy. And the sourdough bread... I don't know if they make it in-house or have someone local make it but it was super tasty and a nice counterpoint to the sweet red peppers and slightly spicy aioli. But, what I really loved was my coffee. I had a cafe au lait and it was probably the best cafe au lait I've ever had. Seriously. It was smooth and lovely. This semester they have extended their hours and I hope that they keep some of these longer hours in the future, I'd like to get back on a regular basis. read more

Heirloom offers the best food on OSU's campus and truly is a best kept secret in Columbus as a whole. I've had nearly everything on the menu, and it's all delicious. The vegan eye-opener burrito, egg sandwich, toasted munster sandwich, quinoa salad, and carrot cake are my personal favorites. Coffee is Crimson Cup (so nothing special), but they have a bottomless mug option for dining in. They get BUSY between 11am and 1pm, so plan accordingly. There are signs asking non-dining patrons not to linger, which is kind of funny and kind of off-putting. The owners and very visible and hardworking. All of that being said, I do think prices could stand to be 15%-20% less due to the not-so-Midwestern portion sizes. read more

I was on campus today and on whim went over to the Wexner Center, and checked out Heirloom. I tried the Cottage Pie--organic potatoes, ground beef and mushrooms, and it as very good. One of my markers for food is potatoes (the other is sweet and sour soup). Got an excellent chai latte to go with it. The lunch was quite good, but a little over-priced. $7.95 would have been fine; not t$10,95. Breakfast is served all day (I think) and next time I"m gong to try the breakfast buritto, which I almost got this time. My only criticism is the space itself. I work on campus, so I like to eat at Heirloom at least once a week. It gives me a chance to take a walk in the middle of the day. I've recently started getting the quinoa salad. Everything about it is wonderful--the chicken is fresh and juicy, the quinoa adds a chewiness, the brazil nuts make it crunchy, the chickpeas are creamy, and the lime cumin vinaigrette is tart and sweet at the same time. I also love the frozen bananas. I let the banana defrost while I'm eating so it's not so frozen when I try to eat it. I like the one with roasted nuts best because it adds some salt and crunch. Prior to my discovery of the quinoa salad, I would get their sandwiches. My favorite is the Gila Monster--southwest turkey meatloaf with pepperjack cheese and a chipotle sauce. I hate meatloaf, passionately hate it, but I make an exception for this sandwich. I think the southwest spin and use of turkey makes it better than your average meatloaf. I had the Cubasian bowl once--it's full of brown rice, black beans, sweet potatoes, kale, etc. Really good and really filling. Prices are probably out of the range for college students. You see a lot of professors and older (likely graduate?) students eating here. A staple of the arts district community on campus, the Heirloom staff are exceptional. I'm fairly certain I had one or more meals here daily more days than not during my two years of graduate study at the nearby School of Music. The breakfast stirfry and toasted munster were my personal favorites. I've been coming to Heirloom every week since I started my program at OSU. I absolutely love the fresh ingredients and the seasonal menu. When I first started coming, I couldn't get enough of the cheesy pasta bakes; now I'm obsessed with the Gila monster sandwich (not your mama's meatloaf!). While Heirloom is a bit more expensive for the campus area (I usually spend $10-$15 per meal with coffee and a baked good), it's so much better and healthier than the fast food joints on High Street or anything the library sells. In fact, it's definitely the best food on the Oval. It also has the best coffee and pastries on the Oval (second only to Boston Stoker--for coffee--in the campus area). I rarely leave the Wexner Center without an almond macaroon in hand, and I had a brief love affair with the hazelnut bizaches last fall. This is a great place to study in the morning and late afternoon. Quiet (except at lunch), safe, and next to all that modern art. There are outlets all over the place, plenty of tables, and a bottomless cup of coffee for less than $2.50. If you spend time on campus and haven't made it to Heirloom yet, you really, really should. this little spot in the wexner basement has been my refuge at osu since 2008 and i thought that heirloom was the best thing to happen there. it's my place for morning coffee and i have spent a lot of quiet mornings there studying for my generals and writing. the recent change to $5 minimum to use a credit card is annoying. who carries cash? what's really annoying about this is that i love to eat lunch there and will spend at least $10. the food is delicious but pricier than other places on campus. so lately i'll usually get a pastry with my coffee which brings the total to something like 4.75 and the cashier usually just let me use my card anyway for being close. but today i was basically forced to get another pastry to meet the minimum. i would have cancelled my order if the other worker there hadn't gotten my cup of coffee so quickly. since i spend so much money here, i feel like i should be able to use the convenience of a credit card for my $2 coffee if i don't feel like getting 2 pastries to go. the $5 minimum and the fancy signs everywhere about their busy lunch hours (to discourage lingerers??) are really off putting. i've turned a lot of people to this place for their delicious lunch offerings but now i can't even enjoy it for my morning coffee. as my time at osu comes to an end, i am really sad to be parting with my favorite place on campus on such a sour note. read more
