    The Antenaeum Hotel

Adequate...Nothing to brag about and nothing to complain about. This restaurant is in the Athenaeum Hotel. It has an expansive porch for outside dining and inside is available as well. I decided to check it out for lunch on a stroll checking out Chautauqua Institution grounds. The service was slow (but what place isn't with all the labor challenges thst the tourism industry is dealing with). But once served the staff was delightful despite being stretched thin. I ordered a cocktail, The Lakeside Vodka, Lemongrass Syrup, Orgeat, Lime...which was delicious. I had the Seafood Lobster Roll Creamy lobster salad, fennel, frisée, dill gougères for my main course. It was average at best. All is all is was adequate - Nothing to brag about, nothing to complain about.

We were looking for a place to eat lunch before heading to Panama Rocks and wanted to make sure we had a place that was open and following restrictions during COVID, and Heirloom stood out for its porchside dining! This restaurant is located within the Hotel Athenaeum (which is itself located within the Chatauqua Institution and required us to check in at the main gate to access inside). The building itself is a beautiful wooden structure with a grand two story porch as the setting for the meal, overlooking sparkling Chatauqua Lake which made for a lovely view. For lunch service they were not busy at all and the servers were wearing masks and gloves which was reassuring. There was plenty of space between tables as well. The food itself was fairly decent. We ordered the chicken Cobb salad, the snap pea salad, and the smoked brisket along with fries and a mac and cheese for the kids. The salads were fresh and flavorful, and the dressings went well with the salads. The mac and cheese was also very creamy and tasty with a panko crust on top to give it a bit of crunch. However, my husband was disappointed with the smoked brisket which rather tough and not as tender as we were expecting, although the flavor was good. In short, I give it high ratings for the lovely setting and grounds, which are very nice to walk around either before or after a meal. The food was okay, and a bit overpriced considering the quality. However, I could see coming here just for the overall experience!

The restaurant is not bad. The appetizer and dessert were absolutely delicious. The main entree were a hit and miss. I got the pasta with chicken and it was pretty plain, my husband got the beef short rib and really enjoyed it. Beautiful views on the porch of the lake!

The dining area on the veranda

Dining on the wide porch overlooking the lake was spectacular but the buffet items were dried out (chicken cordon bleu, penne pasta) or a congealed, lumpy mess (penny-sized shrimp Alfredo sauce). Dessert buffet items were plentiful but uninspired. On the plus side, the drink menu included mocktails and the wait staff was warm and attentive.

Highly overrated - a fun experience once and a beautiful view outside but so overpriced and bad service!

My wife ordered chicken korma and I chose pork chops. Both were pleasing choices. Our server was young - and likely new. She was impressive! My wife frequently orders chicken, therefore she is an excellent judge regarding what she was served. I seldom order pork chops because I have been disappointed too many times. This was an exception. My pork chops were prepared well and I enjoyed every bite.

This year was equally bad, so we won't be going again. Here's why. FOOD. It's okay, but it's not that good. Between the 2 visits and 4 people, we've ordered a decent variety from the menu. Nothing stuck out as especially good. Most food was left uneaten. SERVICE. The staff is kind, but highly ineffective. It took them multiple trips to the table just to get drinks out, water cups filled, etc. We had to wait at least 30 minutes for the appetizers and another 25 minutes for most of the entrees. We then had to wait another 15 minutes for the last entree to be served - and then it was prepared wrong. And this was on a slow night. LOCATION. Can't be beat if you're staying on the grounds. It's right by the Plaza. If you are looking for good food and service, there are better options (like the Intermezzo) on the Chautauqua grounds.

They've brought together a thoughtful collection of flavorful food, elegant ambiance, and an impeccable staff -- making Stella stand out as one of the premier dinner destinations in Chautauqua County. Nestled on the quaint Chautauqua Avenue in the village of Lakewood, Stella transports you into a warm lakeside community setting where each recipe feels thoughtfully chosen and lovingly prepared. I've dined here many times and each time I leave, I can't wait to come back. The décor is eclectic, elevated, and visually appealing. Laurie's impeccable taste is reflected throughout the restaurant and can be seen in every loving detail -- from the art and lighting to the overall atmosphere that makes Stella feel both sophisticated and inviting. On our most recent visit, my son enjoyed the panko-breaded fish fry, which is easily one of the best in Chautauqua County -- crispy, fresh, and perfectly cooked. I had the Artichokes Française, a flavorful dish with the perfect balance of softness and crispness. If you're in the area (or even if you're not), Stella is worth the trip. We were the only people in the restaurant on a weekday in the late afternoon, which was odd, but in this case it led to incredibly personalized and attentive service. The food was delicious -- nothing that blew us away with originality, but well executed tapas that are easy to recommend. The wine choices were pretty solid as well. Given the chance, I'd like to return for dinner when there's a live music with the piano that seems to be the focal point of the room! There doesn't appear to be a multitude of higher-end restaurants in the local area, but this definitely falls into that "nicer" category.

I've tried a few of the dishes over the past two years - and the sushi that they added to the menu this year definitely takes this menu up a notch. Previously, I would have given Splash a 3/4. The ambiance is beautiful in every way imaginable - the outdoor seating with lake views, the indoor seating - refined - yet comfortable. We sat at the bar on a Saturday night (without reservations) and ordered all the sushi offerings. The sushi arrived with edible flowers - in which I had to put one in my hair. The food was delicious, and sushi is hard to find around Chautauqua Lake. All of the staff were pleasant. This is now one of my favorite spots on Chautauqua.
