Fantastic restaurant! Elegantly appointed, great service, and most importantly, seriously good food. We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday without a reservation. Luckily, we got there just in time because they filled up pretty quickly! We shared the special soup (an outrageously perfect tomato bisque) and their warm spinach salad as starters. I LOVED the spinach salad - the goat cheese, crispy onions, and roasted red peppers were perfect. The bacon was crispy and plentiful. One tiny nit was that I would say it was slightly overdressed. But that didn't stop us from gobbling it all up. Two of us had the crab cake sandwich and our third had the Mary burger. SO GOOD. The crab cake was huge, had great crab chunks and flavor (not one of those overly breaded and fried crab cakes with lots of filler). The slaw on top was excellent. The fries are very good but spicy in that they are covered with salt and lots of pepper. We finished with their chocolate torte and almond financier - both superb. Clearly these chefs are super talented and making fantastic food. Highly recommend and probably should have a reservation! read more

While in the Frankfort area, I checked on-line for some dining choices. It became apparent that Heirloom restaurant in the nearby town of Midway was one of the best restaurants in the entire area. It is an upscale restaurant in the most modest of places. They have two seatings: one for lunch and one for dinner. We made a reservation for a dinner seating and were glad we did. For a weekday evening in early November, the restaurant had a good size crowd. Our waiter was polite, attentive and knowledgeable. Our basket of bread included artisan breads and baguettes; it was served with a spread consisting of bourbon, spicy mustard, brown sugar and molasses and was very good. For a starter, we split a Caesar salad. It was very good but be forewarned, it does contain anchovies. For the Share/Indulge course, we had the chicken livers. They were breaded and deep fried and were served with ricotta ravioli, crème fraîche, arugula and parmesan. The livers were very good, but the crème fraîche was to die for. For our entrées, I had the griddled scallops and my wife had the New Zealand lamb rack. The scallops came with garlic sausage, coconut, lychee, tamarind and basil. The lamb rack came with a pumpkin puree, swiss chard and red wine braised onions. Both my wife and I were absolutely delighted with our choices - they were flavorful and unique. We can't say enough good things about Heirloom. It is truly a gem in the small town of Midway. During racing season, it is frequented with people from as far away as Lexington and Louisville. If you have the opportunity to enjoy a meal at Heirloom, don't pass it up! read more

A recommendation from my Facebook friend Morgan that I have been in contact for over three years knows I am a "foodie" and told me to go to this small restaurant in Midway Kentucky. So, at the end of our Kentucky tour: Road to the Horse and Bourbon Trail tastings, we stopped to try this place. A favorable recommendation from the Soda Fountain inside the Pharmacy ( yeah you read that right! Old fashioned Soda Jerk and Pharmacy!) was to try the Fried Chicken. So, I did that! It was the most expensive item on the menu $16. Now being a visitor from California, I kinda chuckled and thought to myself; " hmm if this was back home it would be described as "farm to table" and about $55? So service has been awful the past couple of times, we have spent an average of 2.5 hours for dinner! BUT, m not taking any stars off.. if you go taste their Butternut Squash Autumn Bisque, you will know why.. if you don't wipe your place clean and are left wanting more, I will be surprised.. no..shocked! Came here for a birthday celebration. Started off with the bread- salty but delicious pretzel rolls! I enjoyed the mustard sauce. We then had the chicken liver which was very good but slightly burnt. Really enjoyed the sauce- very creamy but not too heavy, thanks to the lemon added into the sauce. And finally, the eggplant. Delicious with shrimp! It's a must! Squash was great, potatoes were delicious. I ate the whole dish! The pork chops were very delicious as well. I must say, if you're looking to impress, come here for a wonderful experience. Heirloom, just a short drive from Lexington, feels like you're being transported to other states and countries, with it's innovative menu that turns local, Kentucky ingredients into mouth-watering dishes that could be found on the West Coast or across the pond. Every single dish was delightful and the wine list was top-notch. You cannot go wrong with any dish, but I recommend always having the special, because if all of them are as exquisite as the squid ink pasta we indulged in, then it is a fleeting, joyful experience that must be had! Incredibly nice restaurant. My boyfriend's family frequents there and service, food, and drinks are always excellent. My boyfriend made reservations for us for my birthday, and upon arriving the reservation had been lost. The restaurant was full and we did wait a bit but the staff worked together to get us a table, and then gave us a complimentary cheese and meat platter as well as a very nice dessert. They definitely made up for the mix up! I highly, highly recommend this place if you're anywhere near it in Kentucky. read more

A few weekends ago we had the chance to dine at one of my very favorite restaurants Heirloom, we love it there! The menu is always unique & delicious, the service is on point! I highly recommend Bo he is so kind and gives great suggestions! We always & I mean always get the chicken livers and before you say you don't like livers you must try these they will change your mind! They are perfectly prepared lightly breaded & pan fried atop a bed of ricotta ravioli in a lemon creme fraiche sauce....mmmm Their crab cake is a staple as well! It's not a bunch of filler and it's cooked to perfection with sweet corn veloute, avocado, corn-cotija salad, sriracha honey. We also had the octopus paired with kimchi and the mushroom toast. I love making a meal of appetizers and Heirloom is a perfect place to do that although their entrees are delicious as well. And be sure to save room for dessert! read more

Met up with a dear friend for lunch at Heirloom, and the weather was perfect so we decided to eat outside. The restaurant has comfortable/shaded outdoor seating, and soft music outside. The soup du jour was a tomato gazpacho, which was perfect! Flavorful and crisp with just the right notes of seasoning. I had the chicken livers for main course, which were out of this world. The chicken livers were perfectly cooked and the flavor profile fit well with the creaminess and lemon flavor in the sauce, and the arugula. We then couldn't resist the dessert and opted for the crème brûlée. Which had a perfect glaze on top, with a raspberry sherbet, fresh blackberries and whipped cream. The raspberry sherbet was lite and fresh, with the perfect amount of tart/sweet ratio. The waitress was wonderful throughout the service. It was our first time to midway and to heirloom, but will definitely look forward to a future visit! read more

Stopped by this cute local spot in the town of Midway (tucked away between Frankfort and Lexington). I heard Kentucky had good deviled eggs, and I can confirm that's true. The deviled eggs here were perfectly balanced and had a slight hint of citrus. I honestly could have eaten an entire order by myself! For my entrée I ordered the chicken livers over ravioli, which was phenomenal! If you find yourself in the area, definitely worth stopping in. read more

Located in what once was a small railroad town, this restaurant's storefront is as inviting as its interior. The menu is short but you will find something you like. I tried the Buttermilk-Brined Fried Chicken with fork-mashed Yukon potatoes and sawmill gravy. Oh My Yum! This dish was so delish if it came with a biscuit, I would've sopped it up! Then the table split Bourbon Butter Cake and a Lemon Cake whose name escapes me. The presentations of these desserts was almost as delightful as their taste. Perhaps they'd make a romantic dinner location but going there for lunch gives you time to wander the town and enjoy the day. read more

My wife and I were in town for our 5th wedding anniversary and wanted to treat ourselves to some fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Our server, Kay, was friendly and helpful and really did a great job making sure we had an experience to remember for our anniversary. I had the grouper special and my wife had the filet. Both were excellent and were complimented very well by the accompanying ingredients while still letting the beef and fish be the star of the dish. The crème brûlée was a great finish to our meals. I have had some great meals here in the last but something has gone terribly wrong. Everything we ordered sounded fantastic but the flavor profiles and execution of the dishes were way off. The melon in the compressed melon dish was not compressed. It was just...well, melon. One running theme was the odd misuse of feta cheese, which I love, in dishes where it just didn't belong. Nothing was excellent. Most of the food was kind of a disaster. Too bad. I used to love driving to Midway for this now tarnished gem. read more

We drove an hour out of the way to eat here based on a special recommendation from a friend. The staff was incredibly rude and would not seat us even though the website said it's open till 2pm. I tried to explain the situation and the bartender plus all the staff just gave my family a terrible vibe. The place is stuffy and would never recommend this vibe to anyone. read more

Our innkeepers at Swans Nest suggested we tootle over to Midway to see the dining options and we booked a table here. We were not disappointed!!! The food was delicious cooked fresh and served by some very attractive staff...do all the women who work at this place have to have long flowing locks??? We started with sauteed chicken livers and a sausage broth dish....and as members of the British Sausage Appreciation society the dish got 10/10!!!!!! For mains we had the halibut tempura, and this batter was proper tempura batter, light crisp and subtle. My beef tenderloin was cooked rare...just as I had asked. Yup the blood flowed and bloody tasty it was too! The design of the restaurant was contemporary and they have created a great atmosphere....loud enough to have presence but quiet enough to chat. We were VERY impressed with our dinner.....book as it does get busy...but do visit...it's really worth the drive. The South African red wine, having just returned from there, was excellent and good value. read more

I recently visited Heirloom for a lunch meeting and now I want to find an excuse to go back. The small restaurant feels upscale but warm when you walk in. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive throughout the entire meal. But the reason I really loved this place was the food. The lunch menu has a variety of options from pasta, sandwiches, salads, burgers, etc. Several things looked appealing to me but I went with a special they had that day which was a bacon, pimento cheese, and fried green tomato panini. It was so good. In fact, I'm pretty sure my boss wished he had ordered it too, although his salad with blackened shrimp was good as well. The panini was perfectly grilled and didn't get messy or fall apart when I ate it like some paninis do. It came with crispy fries that perfected the meal. The menu changes seasonally so you can't be sure they will have an item every time but I like that. I want to go back and try the dinner menu. Overall, this was a great experience and it's in the middle of a very cute small main street in Midway that you can explore. read more

A real winner on what is undoubtedly one of the quaintest streets in America. I've been trying to find one word to describe the food, but I need a pretty intense word, something that means delicious/unique/flavorful/interesting/delicious (yes I know delicious is there twice). The crab cake was gigantic and had an amazing crab flavor complemented perfectly by juicy kernels of corn that had just been cut off the cob. For my entree I had the Capellini Pasta with Alaskan King Crab, chiles, and loads of parmigiano reggiano. I was amazed at how much crab I got. There were huge chunks of freshly shelled crab (even had a few pieces of intact claw meat) and the sauce was perfectly spicy. There is so much to this restaurant, many different layers that somehow work together to create an amazing experience. It feels like a small-town restaurant using farm stand ingredients and that ultra trendy urban restaurant that you can never get into, all at the same time. And it works. I can't wait to go back to Heirloom, it's just a shame I'm not in Kentucky more often. read more

First time at Heirloom, though I'd eaten at Distilled in Lexington, one of Wombles's other restaurants, and had been really impressed. Same quality of food and service at Heirloom, though in a more intimate setting. Over cocktails, we had the cheese and fruit plate, which had three contrasting and delicious cheeses along with olives, grapes, candied walnuts, etc. My companions had the burger and thought it was delicious. I had the striped bass, which was perfectly cooked. I know the foodie intelligentsia is nuts about crispy fish skin, but I've found it adds texture but sometimes an off-putting flavor, but maybe the other places (and my attempts at home) have just lacked sufficient technique, because it was delicious on the bass. It was served on a leek and onion risotto with pieces of country ham--I could have eaten three times the amount served. The asparagus were crisp-tender and complemented the dish well. The service was friendly and attentive and I was exceptionally satisfied with my meal. Will definitely come back. read more

I had probably one of the top 3 meals of all time here. The chef is a mastermind. It is clear he has an extensive array of flavors and textures that he selects from and expertly blends to culminate in a wondrous tasting adventure. I want to try everything! There is strict attention to the detail of every part of his dishes. No you will not get a heaping pile of food, but if you are looking for entrees that will delight and challenge your palate, this is the place to be. I do wish he used social media more to post his daily entree specials, but it seems he puts it all together an hour before opening which I guess highlights his genius ability. read more
