Heitz Cellar is GORGEOUS. From its outdoor patio entering in, to the indoors dining tables, to its outdoor venue in front of the vineyards, this is an experience of its own. They have an hors d'oeuvres with highlights of the potato chip caviar and New Zealand lamb lollipops. The lamb didn't taste gamey at all, was very tender and juicy! I'm a bread fiend and they had solid crispy sourdough. I was really impressed by the short rib, which was melt in the mouth tender. I think the other dishes, like the pasta faglioli, almond torte was alright. The pasta faglioli didn't have deep flavors and the almond torte was a little too dry for my liking. I joined a friend for her birthday at the Heitz Cellar Salon. It was an experience from parking to walking up the door! We were greeted with Sauvignon Blanc and as soon as you walk in you can see the view to the covered outdoor seating area overlooking the vines...it was stunning! The hospitality was impeccable! The first Cabernet Sauvignon we tried was called Trail ride...it was extremely balanced and silky smooth...I could drink a glass every day! We tasted several other cabs and also had charcuterie towers to share...they use really fresh ingredients and it paired well with wines. Our wine educator shared some super helpful info about their vineyards. The ambiance was perfect, it was a beautiful cloudy Napa day! I will be sure to visit again to visit their estate. read more

I've always seen the Heitz label and was very eager to visit. Now owned by the DeMeine Estates (Brendel , Burgess to name a few), the winery finds itself in a niche market of the very high end Napa wines with the highest quality grapes sold in the area. We experienced the single vineyard tasting and experienced 4 different Napa Cabs (100% cab, no blending varietals). The pours were modest, and from what I could tell, they were all exceptional. Not too tannic, aged beautifully. For us, the real highlight here was the service. Joe was one of the best hosts we have ever had in the Napa Valley. Man, was he smooth! Knowledgeable, friendly, gracious, professional. He really made the experience what it was -- a really special time at the winery. This is a first class place to taste wine, but definitely don't forget your pocket book. The wines are SUPER pricey (single vineyard). So let me start out by saying our sommelier (Zach) was the best and most informative host we have experienced to date. That includes Napa, Paso, Santa Ynez and Temecula. That includes Stags Leap, Rutherford, Cakebread, Bennet Lane, Elizabeth Spencer and Coppola. Add in several items in Napa and 20 or so in Santa Ynez and Temecula. If you come here make sure to ask for Zach. His energy, knowledge and class gives me some hope for his generation. A total class act. The property from the outside is easy to miss as it is very unassuming. Once you get in it becomes clear you are in for a next level experience. None the the caves or that bologna but upscale seating overlooking beautiful vineyards. Very comfortable and accommodating. Only two of our party of four were tasting but we were all offered caviar hors d' oeuvres upon our arrival and another sample. A couple of tasty bites to pair with their welcome Chardonnay. Then according to our two tasters they were tasting wines that made them want to sing. This made me nervous as Napa wines are not free. The tasting was not cheap. $125 per person and even though no fancy your was involved a level of information was imparted with charm by Zach. It was worth it more than a $60 two hour rating and tour at Staggs' Leap. Of course Staggs' lacked all kinds of class and hospitality (see separate review for that sorry experience). Well 6 bottles later including two Martha's Vineyard cabs we were in the club and will struggle with wine from lesser wineries. Other wineries should send their hosts here to see how it's done and they should experience Zach doing it. It was "Yelp's Big Night In", and just the reason I needed to uncork my coveted​ Heitz cabernet. I've been looking forward to finally tasting this 2005 Napa Valley cabernet, but since Heitz's reds are incredibly age-worthy, I've been very patient and have laid this down for many years. Turns out, this big and bold classic Napa valley cabernet was well worth the wait and I enjoyed every drop of this liquid gold!! It may have benefitted from another year or so, but hey, better to drink it before an apocalypse. My only regret was not buying a case​ since 2005 was a perfect grape​-growing​ weather year in the Napa Valley. You can't go wrong with any of their reds, but I'm partial to their cabernets. Do your research, invest in a nice bottle of Heitz from a great year, and pick a special occasion​ to enjoy it many years from now! read more

Mr & I scheduled a last min day trip to wine country & given we were still under pandemic restrictions, reservations were required everywhere The estate at Heitz is gorgeous. We were immediately greeted with a tasting of Sauvignon Blanc & then taken by cart to the farmhouse where our tasting adventure would take place. Gorgeous room with huge casks and cool cross breeze. Pourings were extremely stingy. The photo is the actual size of our pour It was interesting to taste the differences in the vintages. Climate change at its best. We ended up liking the newer of their featured vintage better......there were lots of Christmas spice notes that we thought would pair nicely with a holiday dinner. So we opted for 3 bottles = 250 each. The tasting was over $100 each So for 4 or 5 incredibly small tastings and a super quick 40 min........over $1100 - which included taxes & tip b/c let's face it, we recognize they were open during a pandemic & the hosts need to earn a living too........We would not come back for a tasting experience & will have to see how the wines age before considering a pickup only scenario. Came here with the BF and our friend visiting out of town - this was winery number 2 during our day trip to Napa. I've had this place on my radar after hearing how it still does complimentary tastings (which is extremely rare on this side of the mountains... Sonoma is a lot nicer about it). The tasting room itself is very small and quaint - but there is some outdoor seating in the back with a gorgeous view of the vineyards. Plus it's shaded! I really enjoyed sitting on benches and taking in the beauty of Napa Valley. Near the entrance there's a nice view of the bunny statue from Hall Winery across the street. First I would like to clear up some logistics - on my visit yesterday, they offered 2 tastings, "Heitz Social Flight" and "Heitz Heritage Tasting". The Heritage Tasting was $35 and offered 5 wines, while "Social Flight" was free, so we decided to go with that. Despite what other reviews have raved about, it seems they may have changed their "complimentary" wine tasting as we were limited to a choice of only 2 of the 3 wines offered. I keep seeing fairly recent reviews on getting 4 flights, so this change must have been recent (darn!). The Chardonnay and Grignolino were excellent samples and our server was very friendly in giving some background on the winery and the wines themselves (even if it was just 2 wines). I particularly liked the Grignolino (low on the tannins but very flavorful) and bought a bottle, since it's a grape I rarely see. For the price, I felt confident about drinking it too. I also got a small sample of the Zinfandel from the BF's pour, and found it rather pleasant - very smooth and light for a Zin, making it a very easy drinking wine. I also liked how our server let us try the port they had out - very "sweet" of him! Free tasting!! 4 tastings They had a pretty good chard, zin, cab and port!!! My sis bought me the 12 cab ($52) and i bought a couple ports. Then we drove back to grab a couple more bottles and they were closed BUT he opened the doors and we were able to grab a couple bottles more....now i wish i bought a couple more!!! Argh! Bought the zin for our dinner tonight and another cab. I was really close to buy the chard but im really not a white wine type person. Oddly this napa visit was more of a merlot, white/rose visit. What a hidden gem of a winery. Super cute property, wonderful wines and very friendly staff. Came here one Saturday afternoon and got to do their complimentary wine tasting. We got 5 different kinds of wine, and all of them were really good. Even the cab was super smoooth and I don't even like cab's. The winery staff were super helpful and nice as they explained each wine and told us stories of the history of the winery. The property had a lovely patio area in the rear and a beautiful patio in the front as well. There was a nice fountain and nice chairs to sit down and enjoy the view and the amazing wine. There's a very small parking lot next to the tasting room. We really loved this place! read more

Heitz wine is well made and delicious. But that $75.00 tasting fee is too hard to stomach.

So the first thing you need to know about Heitz is that the tastings are no longer free. They went from free... to $70 each. $70 EACH. FROM FREE. Turns out, Heitz was bought by billionaire farmer Gaylon Lawrence Jr who decided he wanted to be in the wine business. He runs a variety of farms in the Midwest and South. I was hoping nothing would change. It has. And not in a good way. So not only are tastings now $70 each (so long, Heitz), the wines are now also more expensive. Martha's Vineyard 2009 suddenly went up by $25 for no apparent reason. No one told me that when I bought my wine so I ended up paying $75 more than I thought I was going to pay. In the past, Heitz had pricing sheets with tasting notes so you knew exactly what each wine you were tasting cost. These sheets are now gone. They will comp the tasting fee if you buy at least three bottles or spend in excess of a certain amount, which I did, but no more just stopping in to see what the new vintages taste like. I guess the almighty dollar is the most important thing at Heitz now. Then I decided to check my credit card receipt. Turns out they also double charged my credit card. Now I have to take time out of my vacation to call them and make sure they fix this error. Fun. This is a sad review to write. I take no satisfaction in writing it. Heitz is no longer family-owned Heitz, it's a wine corporation, not in business because they love wine and want to make money making it, but because they love money and think they can make it from this wine. So long, Heitz--I will miss you, but I won't be going back to your tasting room or buying any more wine from your once legendary Napa winery. And that is sad. read more

From the moment we walked in, I loved everything about Heitz. It's beautiful inside but also smaller than most places. They limit the amount of reservations which gives the whole experience a more personal feel which I appreciate. It sometimes feels like you get overlooked in the larger wineries. The person assisting us was engaging, personable, and knew a lot about wine (which weirdly doesn't always happen). The tasting table is set low rather than the high bar top adding to that intimate feel. We just happen to stop here last minute which wasn't on our itinerary but so glad we did. And best of all, the wine was very, very good. He explained the extended aging process and the flavors it produced. I'm so glad we made it here! Of all of the wineries I visited during this trip to Napa, this was definitely my favorite. And it's not because they provide free tasting. The place is right next to the V. Sattui Winery and is a smaller winery that doesn't get the appreciation that it should. Parking was small but enough for the small intimate wine tasting room. They start you off with some whites, then move on to the reds, and then finally the winery's port. In addition to the ones on the table, they also provide have some in the back shelf that they will gladly pour a glass for you. Of the wines, I liked the Chardonnay and the Cabernet. The others were pretty good as well. I wasn't a particular fan of the port but I think it was just not my cup of tea (or in this case, glass of wine). You can grab a seat inside where there are a couple of seats with some books to peruse. I suggest walking out the back to get a glimpse of the vineyard and to sit near the fountains and take in the Napa beauty (with a glass of wine, of course). The place seems so peaceful in comparison to the other wineries in the area where you are just surrounded by tons of people trying to get their wine tasting flights done. I will definitely come back and taste their new crop of wines when I come back to Napa. The wines are tasty and the service is impeccable. The vibe just feels like a peaceful log cabin but still modernly decorated. Give it a try over the huge wineries. You won't be let down. read more

The cream, as they say, rises to the top, regardless of who milks the cow (but perhaps I just made this up; if so, I blame that last pour of Trailside Cab). It is no secret that Napa Valley is a very pretty place, but often this leans towards the palatial, the posh, and the power-seeking rather than the quaint, the charming, and the cute. Heitz Cellar's stone-walled, vine-encrusted tasting room, on Highway 29 just south of downtown Saint Helena, is English cottage cute. Provençal French farmhouse charming. Italian Piedmont villa attractive. If you need a visual landmark to locate it, the tasting room is just across the road from the much maligned, thirty-five foot tall metallic rabbit sculpture at the entrance to Hall Winery. The Heitz tasting room exudes elegance and class, not pretentiousness and preening (which cannot be said, sadly, of Bunny Foo-Foo). Heitz wines, too, fit the "charming" and "cute" moulds perfectly, especially those not named Cabernet. Don't get me wrong. I really do enjoy Napa Valley Cabs, especially those from Spring and Howell Mountains, from Rutherford, Oakville, and Stag's Leap districts, or when featured prominently in Bordeaux-style blends, like Kenzo Estate's "Rindo." But wines like that aren't very well suited for simple, everyday enjoyment beneath the welcome and restful shade of a flower-covered veranda in summer, when the vines are in full green lushness but before the hustle and bustle of harvest season arrives. This is the time for Sauvignon Blanc in chilled stemless glasses, so you can feel the cold in the palm of your hand; for Grignolino rosé that can be enjoyed with a crusty baguette and paper-thin slices of cured king salmon topped with purple basil and nasturtium blossoms; for Ink Grade Zinfandel enjoyed with buttered slabs of grilled Model Bakery sourdough bread piled high with generous portions of Woodhouse BBQ's delicious Snake River Farms smoked beef brisket (available at the Saint Helena Farmers' Market) and simply seasoned with freshly ground white peppercorns, a local Napa extra virgin olive oil, and aged balsamic vinegar. Or perhaps a healthy pour of Heitz Chardonnay instead, paired with Panevino grissini and smoked trout, served with garden fresh dill and creamy goat cheese from Napa Valley's very own Skyhill Farms. The complimentary tastings at Heitz are largely a thing of the past, with only a vestigial remnant left (Two small pours, in noticeably shorter wine glasses than those that paying customers receive, from a list of three offerings, all under $30 retail). You'll be happier investing $35 in a Heritage tasting, I think, especially if the 2012 Trailside Vineyard Cabernet is being served. However, if you are here with a date or an adventurous group of fellow tasters, you could chip in for a $75 Appellation tasting (1 Chardonnay plus all 4 Heitz Cabernets, including Martha's Vineyard), get a complimentary tasting, and a Heritage, and then mix and match your glasses. Grab a spot near the Zen-like, trance inducing millstone fountain, under the shade of the veranda and within sight of the blooming pepper tree and the roses next to the vines. Pick a bottle or two for your afternoon and evening meals (the farmers' market is a few blocks away and open Fridays in May through October from 7:30am to noon), and hopefully one or more of your tasting fees will be waived. Wait a second. You're not actually thinking of coming here on a weekend, are you?!! Friday is the best day to come, in summer and fall at any rate. So plan ahead, or prepare to get lost in the crowd clogging the tasting room bar. If in doubt about what to drink, always "think pink" in the summer, and consider a Zinfandel or Grignolino as a more seasonally appropriate red wine over a barrel aged Cab that has rested in expensive French oak for two or more years. Heitz isn't just about the Big Points and critically acclaimed Cabs. It has more class and character than that. And arguably the quaintest and most charming tasting room in the entire valley. Beautiful little winery in Napa. They actually have free wine tastings which is good because $20 here and $20 there certainly adds up after awhile. The tasting flight focused mostly on reds. The first one was a Chardonnay. I'm actually not a huge reds person so I didn't really like the wines (I especially hated the port). But they were super nice about the tasting and had all these tasting notes. We did try some old Cabernets which were a treat. The back area is a bit small and overlooks the vineyards. Also the terrace out back is beautiful and you can taste your wine out there if the weather is nice. This place is like a grounding rod for napa. Heitz is on my wine tasting rotation when I visit Napa Valley. The tasting room is intimate and laid back and they do what all wineries should -- they never charge a tasting fee and no appointment is necessary! The wines are good and they always have a nice assortment available for tasting (they aren't stingy). You can try them all or try a couple that interest you. If you like Port, make SURE you try theirs. It's so good! There's no seating at the tasting bar, simply walk in and tell the person what you want to try. On cooler days it's nice to sit in the big leather chairs next to their stone fireplace to warm up. Sometimes the winery dog is there too and he is a cutie. The winery has some lovely grapes planted right outside and they encourage you to take your tasting glass and walk around the "backyard" vineyard. Great photo ops if you are a shutterbug. Take note of their hours when you are there; they usually close earlier than the other wineries in the area. read more

At the onset, I will say they have amazing wine, and if all you're looking to do is buy some wine there or go for a great tasting then that's your place. YMMV with their concierge, however. I ordered a specialized case of wine as a gift for a client, but no indication of who the order was from, nor the card with a message explaining why the gift was sent was included. The client had to call a half dozen people before he finally found the last four digits of my phone number attached to the order somewhere. I apologized to him for this, and while he was thankful for the wine, the experience was sullied at that point. If you were trying to run a high-end tasting experience/membership club, your hospitality has to be on point this was far below anything I would've expected from what I paid for it. read more

What a great little winery! One of the few off the main hwy in the valley that offers a 4 pour complimentary tasting. Came here after we had some wine at Hall. Heitz is just across the street. It's not a big tasting room but we were a group of 8 and the staff was friendly accommodating us quickly. We were even able to bring our glasses out back to the patio and then come back in to get the next tasting pour. That's really nice and I appreciated their flexibility. The back patio was nicely shaded with some seating, an infinity fountain and a view of their vineyards. Really a great spot on such a warm day. Purchasing isn't mandatory but after the tasting I got the 2012 Zin and the 2014 Cab. Looking forward to tasting these at home! read more

COMPLIMENTARY TASTING!!! Best red wine tasting room in napa. We were given excellent service and thoroughly enjoyed all of the wines we tried. The complimentary tastings were amazing and we were blown away by the flavors. We were even able to try some special wines since they were open that day. The port ended up coming home with us and I greatly look forward to opening it for a special summer desert. The tasting room itself was clean and pretty. There was a patio in the back for sipping wine, of course. The room is small so would be best for smaller groups. I'm sure they accommodate large groups if you call ahead and arrange for it. Heitz Cellar has been on my list, so I reserved the Estate tasting back in July. The experience perfectly went above and beyond my expectation! Garrett and Anani were wonderful hosts who showed me the original barn and the stone-walled property with knowledge and hospitality. As one of the iconic Napa wineries, the Cabernets were impeccably crafted and were so delicious. You can taste all the differences among the three Cabs from various terrior. I was also poured with 2008 Trailside that showcased the longevity of their wines. I was fortunate enough to visit in September as the tasting will be moved back to its salon starting October. Brought a handful of bottles with me and will surely visit again! read more
