I've been coming here for over 2 decades. The waitresses are always nice and usually very busy. They don't chit chat, but they remember everything you say and do a great job! They atmosphere is fine, always clean, nothing to write home about, but the food and menu are fantastic. This place is just a solid, nook in the corner type diner. No bells and whistles, what you see is what you get, but there is something charming and authentic about this place in an old fashioned way. Fantastic location Bad 1. Expensive. Recently paid $18 for a small fried chicken sandwich and a few fries. 2. Portions can be small 3. The acoustics are horrible. It gets very loud and you can barely hear each other. 4. The music is stupid, loud and makes it even harder to hear. 5. They have a couple older waitresses which is both a blessing and a curse. Breakfast was very disappointing. The eggs were runny and cold when I had asked for medium-hard, and the coffee was thin and watery. Service was the bigger issue: my plate was taken away while my son was still eating, which felt quite rude. Even more frustrating, we were rushed out of the place -- the unfriendly thin woman with dark-blond hair who appeared to be running the place stood nearby with a cleaning cloth in hand, almost policing the table, and hurried to wipe it down behind me as if pushing us out the door. What a happy accident when my hotel's breakfast buffet closed earlier than I expected, and I had to go into town for breakfast! If I hadn't happened, I would not have had a lovely breakfast at Helen's. The menu has a nice variety and the customers seem like a mix of visitors and local people. Lots of greeting each other by name which gives a really welcoming vibe. Staff were friendly and helpful. Felt like all the servers have probably been there a long time and they enjoy their work. I had the Joe's Special, made with turkey sausage. Very tasty. Their home fries are delicious. Really flavorful, almost like the potatoes were simmered in a stock before they were fried up. Or maybe whoever's in the kitchen just has a deft hand with seasoning Also had the biggest cold brew I've ever had in my life. It would give a Sbux Triente a run for his money, and it was delicious. (Their coffee is Bad Ass brand out of Hawaii.) Parking is on street and free (there are meters but the City has deactivated them). Great find in the center of town. Went for a late lunch on a Saturday, and it was packed, but we were seated very promptly and waited on almost immediately! I was very impressed with how friendly and efficient the staff were in spite of how very busy they were. The menu is extensive with a wide range of options. I got the shrimp po' boy wrap, which was great -- New Orleans-hot, but even better since it includes some perfectly crisp bacon for a surprising and wonderful crunch! My partner's Asian Salmon salad was also excellent. It's unusual to find a restaurant that can deliver on such a range of dishes, and we want to come back and try more of them. read more

Nothing better than sitting at the counter on a cold winter morning sipping hot chocolate and enjoying some truly excellent food. The breadth of food/cuisine on the menu makes you worry "they can't be doing all of this right" and yet somehow they are. Both the service and atmosphere are warm and friendly. My girlfriend says to bring back the peppermint ice cream with marshmallow sauce circa 2008. This means nothing to me and sounds super unappealing but she insisted I share. I've only been here once before with my girlfriend and we caught the end of the lunch rush so it was hard to judge the potential. This time, I came with a craving for a diner style lunch and they delivered. Plenty of tables were open, my server was super nice, the order was quick, and when the plate came out I could see whoever was on the grill knew what they were doing. The standard turkey burger there comes with pico and avocado, and normally wet toppings would make the top bun disintegrate, but they'd toasted it hard enough that it held up perfectly. Fries were on point, sized between shoestring and steak for a nice starchy snap with a little extra time in the fryer to make them crispy. Then despite having a decent sized meal, I caved and got the banana split so I could check out their ice cream. It looked like folks there were going for milkshakes, maybe I'll try that next time. In any case, I recommend catching these guys off peak so you can soak in the chill diner vibe and completely enjoy the experience. read more

I am so sad to say that the to-go lunch I just purchased at Helen's was terrible. I haven't been there in a very long time and after this experience, I won't be returning. I ordered the Californian wrap which was $17 and an extra $3.50 for sweet potato fries. I got about 10 french fries and could see the bottom of the container underneath them when I opened it up. I mean it almost felt like a prank. The wrap had very little actual filling/substance inside of a stale, hard to chew wrap. We opened it up before we threw it away to see one (if that) very thinly sliced piece of turkey, 2 small pieces of avocado, half of a lettuce leaf and a tomato shred.. I think this might've been a joke. If it was, it's on them. Some restaurants do skimp on takeout orders so maybe they're a little better if you eat there when you can actually see your meal in front of you. A must stop in Concord. Get the clam chowder, it's sooo good. Our party had the BLT, club sandwich and cheesesteak some with furies some with coleslaw. All were so good. We even went back the next day from Lexington for burgers, yum, more chowder and turkey sandwiches. Ordered the blueberry pie. It was delicious. My wife and I visited for breakfast on a very busy Saturday morning and luckily, we didn't have to wait on line. Shortly afterwards, the line was out the door. The welcome was not the warmest and kind of chilly. My wife ordered the California omelet which was a special. The omelet contained avocado, bacon, and cheese. She also ordered a side fruit salad. I ordered the All American Breakfast which consisted of two eggs (scrambled), roasted potatoes, sausage, toast, and coffee. We both enjoyed our meals and the portions were generous. My roasted potatoes were crisp and not greasy. The sausage consisted of three very tasty links. No decaf coffee was available so I settled for a cup of tea. The fruit salad was fresh. The Service: restaurant was less than 50% occupied, so we were surprised our order took 15-20 minutes to start arriving.
