I have been meaning to try this neighborhood Greek bakery for a long time, so I finally popped by one morning to do a little sampling. I have to say - everything was Good and I'm really glad I finally went. Off the top of my head, I remember ordering the chocolate baklava, kourebiedes, spinach pie, and the custard pie. I maybe blasphemously have to say I don't always love baklava (the best ones I've had were in Greece lol), but the chocolate baklava was one of the best baklava I've had / it's really up there. My absolute favorites were the spinach pie (crowd favorite among the group of 3 of us that shared the pastries) and the kourebiedes. I did not expect to like this almond cookie as much as I did, but so good. Those 2 things are what I would get again next time if I didn't have a big group to share with. Yum. Also it's very obviously a family-owned spot, which makes the fact that they have PAINTED holiday windows across the various seasons even more impressive. I found myself walking by around Thanksgiving and was sooo impressed by the turkeys and the various painted things. Absolutely recommend making a trip to this place if you like pastries and joy.

Wowza! My first time trying Greek cookies and I'm blown away! Everything is soooo good! Specially the almond flavor cookies and the tea cookies for me! The butter one with white sugar powder is also amazing! I got a dozen today and I feel like I have to go back to get more tomorrow!!! The texture of the almond cookies is just crazy. Highly recommended! Their spinach pastry is also really good!

What an amazing bakery! Such a hidden gem in Chicago! Greek family owned since 1970's...From the moment I walked in I was greeted by an amazing lady behind the counter. Very friendly and was very patient to explain what everything was in the display. She even gave us samples of some of the items. They were absolutely delicious! Small store front but full of amazing baked good that will keep you coming back for more. There is plenty of street parking. I was able to pull up right in the front. I do recommend heating up the spinach pies when you get home. I bought the spinach pie, custard pie, vegan cookies, and honey cookies. The vegan cookies were absolutely delicious! Not too sweet and pairs great with tea and coffee! 100% recommend!

First time here at Hellas - it was a Hellava good decision to walk in here!!

Family owned, pastries are selling lot hotcakes so everything is fresh, right on the corner so you can chill with a pastry and coffee and look outside the window. I would stick with the best sellers. I usually eat here first before going to Monti's ( which is next door) or vice versa. Sometimes I eat dessert before my meal. Efcharisto Hellas!! That was my brief brainstorming of data points to help me structure this review. But to reflect back and take it slow, I love the owner, she's so very kind. Remember the folks who made it their livelihood to start the business. The second generation would help build the business. The third generation, well, I think they're driving a Tesla and probably not thinking of making Spanikoptika for the rest of their lives. So savor these old schools places and business owners because once they're gone, they gone. Oh the food, that's right, let's talk about that. Everyone loves baklava but they have a dipped in chocolate version, can you believe that!? Also, their custard pastry is so creamy and it has a nice crunchy exterior. Finally, you've gotta try those spinach pies, so cheesy and full of spinach. Once again. with a firm outer crust. How do you say thank you in Greek??

The highlight of this place was the man (who I assume was the owner) working today! He was so lovely and kind! When we walked in he immediately greeted us and asked what he could get us. We ordered two spinach pies, an almond cookie and a chocolate baklava. The spinach pies were very good and I LOVED the almond cookie! The cookie was soft and had an amazing flavor! Before we left the shop my sister ordered two coffees and the man gave us two free cookies to dip in our coffee. Customer service at its finest! Show this place some love!

Get the almond cookie. We heard this was the best almond cookie and they were so right. It has such a rich almond taste, a creamy buttery center, and the most homey feel to it. Shout out to the lady at the counter who gave us a free one too. I could eat this forever. 10/10!

Awesome mom and pop Greek bakery. The owners are very nice, and this stuff is really homemade. Highly recommend. I must have come in on an off day the first time. I tried the walnut cake, almond cake, and an extra honey cinnamon cookie they gave me. Both cakes were kinda soggy and wet. Flavor was good. But the cookie was great. I'm glad I came back because then I tried the baklava, bougatsa (custard pie), spinach pie, and rum ball. All of those are incredible. I will dream of the custard pie. Also, there's a $10 credit card minimum.

The moment I stepped inside, I felt like I had been transported to a small Greek taverna. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and our server was incredibly friendly and welcoming. One of the highlights for me was being able to order and converse in Greek, it made the experience feel that much more authentic and special. Of course, I couldn't decide on just one dish, so I had to order a little bit of everything. Why not? The saganaki was absolutely delicious and is definitely a must-try. The avgolemono was decent and comforting, though it wasn't quite as memorable for me. The pastitsio was a bit of a mix. The flavor was delicious and packed with that classic Greek comfort-food goodness, but unfortunately, the béchamel was overcooked and had become too firm. Overall, between the friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, and flavorful food, I had a very good experience at Greek Islands. There are still plenty of classic dishes I'd like to try, so I wouldn't hesitate to come back the next time I'm in Chicago.

Dresscode: Smart Casual / Casual Noise Level: Medium (it gets buzzy after 5:30pm) Thursday night Happy Hour was lively, so it took about 10-15 minutes for someone to come around, but service was attentive once we got going. The food is where Ēma really shines. From the Happy Hour menu, the Charred Eggplant Hummus and Crispy Potatoes were generously portioned and great for sharing. On the main menu, the Indian-Mediterranean fusion Bhel Hummus was a party for my taste buds, while the Hot Honey Halloumi and Chicken Kefta rounded out the table nicely. The halloumi is more of a side than a main, but that sweet-and-salty hot honey combo was chef's kiss. For our finisher, the Chocolate Torte knocked us out. Decadent, delicious and chocolate with lots of depth. Overall, Ēma is an excellent spot to order a bunch of dishes for the table and get an elevated meal without feeling stuffy, and delicious without taking itself too seriously. I ordered Prawns Saganaki and side of pita bread. Asked for no oil nor salt for the pita. While it was shown on the lunch menu on their website, the Prawns Saganaki was actually not on the lunch menu. Luckily, the kitchen has prepared it (for dinner) so I was able to try it. In total 4 pc of big shrimp, served with tomato sauce, crumbled feta and cherry tomatoes. The feta was so finely crumbled that it could easily "melt" in the sauce. The cherry tomatoes added more juiciness to it. Overall great, and definitely paired well with the pita. What made me disappointed, if not annoyed, was the check-in. I waited for nearly 6 min until someone finally noticed me. The staff said she would come "just a minute". At that time a woman (white) went into the restaurant and sat at the bar. Then she started to greet her, and discussed the menu with her, and even took the order! Looked like she completely forgot my presence. Possibly some discrimination/racism idk. i would have left if the restaurant did not charge a no-show fee for reservation. Luckily they took off the pita from my bill after I complained about the waiting time (I did not say about discrimination because I am not sure about it).

I opted for the chicken kalamata dinner for the main event, which came with more french bread and a salad. The salad came out first, and it was pretty simple with minimal dressing. I wished there had been more variety in produce and something besides iceberg lettuce for greens. I'd recommend getting some feta on the side to add some flavor. The chicken, however, was absolutely outstanding. It was super tender, seasoned beautifully with za'atar, and brined in vinegar (I think). The za'atar seasoned french fries underneath were extra crispy and perfectly soaked up the extra sauce from the chicken.
