I have been going to Avli since they opened their first one in Winnetka. I have been to Avli in the Park several times. When I saw their brunch for Greek Easter, I made reservations me and my son. Aside from the food (which is always delicious) the experience was terrible from start to finish. First, they tried to seat us in the back along the wall even though there were several lovely tables open along the window and bar. When I asked to be seated at one of those tables, we were told they were reserved for bigger parties. (This has actually happened before, but typically one of the owners is there and quickly accommodates) This time, we waited for a manager and literally stood in the middle of the dining room for close to 5 min before a manager came and said they were cleaning a table. The table they sat us at was for 4 people; as were the ones supposedly being saved for a bigger party. I accepted the table because at that point was too frustrated to push back. Our waiter was friendly; however more concerned with asking us if we wanted more drinks, than taking the dirty dishes off the table. He rarely came back to the table. When we finally got our check he informed me that 20% gratuity was included. At that point I was so flustered I did not push back. This gratuity was definitely not earned and explains why he was not inspired to take care of us. Came here on my own after walking along the lake. Overlooks a small park with lots of dogs such a peaceful view. Inside is spacious with a bar and tables. Enjoyed great service. Minus one star for a very loud table with a guest that was cursing loudly maybe tipsy from early happy hour. The hostess gave me a look of solidarity as I walked past to go to the bathroom but really they should've asked them to keep it down. The food and wine were delicious and fresh especially the salad. his was dinner reservations before a performance at the Harris Theatre. I found this place from recommended restaurants listing on Harris theater website. The customer service was great. We were greeted by the restaurant manager, hostess and waitress. The table was nice and chic. We seated by the window. Great views Chicago loop high rises and seen nature at its beautiful element. The geek Salad was fresh , large portions of vegetables. Humus and pita bread were spicy and addictive. Soup with basil OMG. Caliarmri were breaded just right. The portions are big enough for lunch AND leftovers. The weather was perfect to sit on outdoor rooftop today. I've been here numerous times and have dined from lunch, dinner, happy hour and brunch menus. Both rooftop and indoor dining areas are spacious, warm and welcoming. The servers are all friendly, professional and knowledgeable about menu items. Such a beautiful space. The space alone, with light colors and walls of windows, makes it easy to like this restaurant. The elevated Greek food did not disappoint. We really enjoyed the tzatziki and pita and the fried eggplant and zucchini appetizers. Amanites pasta was a standout vegetarian option, while the lambchops were perfectly prepared. Among the spirit-free cocktails, the Eros and Ice was nice, but a little sweet for me. I ended up trading with another member of our party who had ordered the Mythic, which was one of the best spirit-free cocktails I've ever had. We were both delighted with the trade. Food/Drink Items: There were good allot of options on the menu. I decided to try the $30 lunch special to try a little bit of everything. For the 1st course, I got pita with tzatziki. The 2nd course I got was Greek salad. I kind of wish the Greek salad had lettuce since it consisted of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, red onion, & feta cheese. This was my first time at any Avli location. This restaurant is so beautiful! The restaurant week brunch menu was well-rounded. Included a salad, an appetizer, and a main dish. I even up having some leftover since the plates were decent sized. Every single dish was really tasty except the chicken which seemed to be a little dry. The service was wonderful. Avli is probably my favourite place for all types of moods. Best suited for either a party, or an intimate dinner. For someone who's not interested in a heavy meal, their pikilia platter is the best with roasted potatoes and their pair it with any of their wines and dessert, you'll be set! 100% recommend the taramasalata and their tirokafteri! Their bartenders make the best gin based drinks in my opinion! We then ordered the Taverna lamb chops with a side of roasted potatoes to share. There were four lamb chops, but the meat was a little tough but decently flavorful, but would not order that again. Good food and service- although it was notable that the server team couldn't keep the dishes matched to the person who ordered- we had to keep swapping plates to get the right dish to the right person. We arrived on a beautiful Saturday evening, and the place was busy. Unfortunately, half the bar was blocked off, and we ended up sitting at the front with a poor view. It would've made more sense to block off the front instead, so guests could still enjoy the view of the park. There was only one bartender and no bar back, so service was understandable slow. The food was delicious and I think I could have eaten anything on the menu and been happy. We landed on sharing a red snapper with potatoes and broccoli after starting with the dip trio (tzatziki, hummus, eggplant) Our waitress started off strong but the service got strange as the evening progressed, which is the result of the 4 stars. She was initially well paced and perfectly attentive but later in the night it got strange when she first told us she "needed to roll silverware" and then brought our check early since she "needed to get home to her daughter to relieve the babysitter" - might need to work on that element. read more

Came here for dinner on a Tuesday and enjoyed it!! The restaurant is really pretty and tucked away in a nice quiet part of lakeshore East. It's a nice spot compared to the adjacent loop area. We had a reservation, but were seated once our entire party arrived (3 of us). They have a variety of different seating types; we were seated at a high top. Service was pretty good; our server came twice consecutively pretty early before we were ready, and then didn't come for a while after that once we were actually ready to order. Other than that, our water was filled often, and the live-cutting of our fish dish was awesome! We started with drinks and the hummus. The not your muse cocktail was pretty and fruity but not super strong. I enjoyed the foam and the presentation of it. Overall the hummus was pretty standard. I think I'd get a different spread next time to try something more unique. We split the fish of the day, salmon dish, and the zucchini chips. The fish was awesome! Our waiter brought out the whole fish and cut it up / took out the bones in front of us, which was really cool to see. It had a lot of flavor and was served with some really good veggies. The salmon was really good and came with a quinoa, but wasn't super unique or special. My favorite part was definitely the zucchini chips!! Wow I loved these and I think I would go back solely for these and skip the rest. The passion fruit crème brûlée was actually huge which we did not expect, but didn't love the passion fruit flavor - it was quite sour which was kind of weird. TLDR: average, overpriced food and service We were excited to try this location having previously enjoyed dining at the river north location many times. When we walked in, we were excited by the beautiful decor and ambiance. Host stand was friendly and quickly got us to our table. The server took a while to get to us even though the restaurant was mostly empty. He was not particularly warm or informative. I didn't see the gyros that the other location was well known for. The waiter informed me they don't offer that here much to our disappointment since that was the main motivation for visit. Hard to believe a Greek place doesn't have gyros. We ordered the Saganaki, Souvlaki, and Moussaka. We did not order any drinks, just tap water. I enjoyed the Saganaki, but my fiancé who loves that dish normally didn't like it. The Souvlaki was fine, borderline dry and not super flavorful. The Moussaka was not our favorite at all - had a strong pumpkin taste and a weird consistency. Our total after 3.5% service charge () was $64 which seemed steep. After tip it was above $80 which seemed crazy for getting three dishes. I think of Avli as normally being a great value but maybe that's only the river north location. I don't think we'll be coming back to this location read more

Had an amazing brunch at Avli! First off, the restaurant itself is stunning. Lots of natural light, modern aesthetics, and beautiful greenery. Their food was also very yummy. Really enjoyed their chicken souvlaki! It was juicy and well seasoned. The pita bread and fries on the side were also delicious. Their tiramisu pancakes were addictingly delicious. Each bite was a fluffy, whipped cream, espresso-y bite of goodness. Their prices are a bit expensive but the portions are huge. It was kind of a long wait (50 mins) to get our food but the servers were very nice. They even gave us an icecream birthday cake to celebrate which was really sweet of them. read more

Can't climb stairs? Then you must be careful as it was a multiple back and forth finding the elevator and then making it work as the front desk just tells "go back". Food was decent enough to come back again (good view remember?) however the service ruined it. Yes, it looks pretty in pictures and the location is unbeatable however there were a lot to wish for. The watermelon salad was half decent as it had seeds. It's cubes of watermelon, how difficult is it to deseed them? The drinks were really good hence the 3 stars else would have been 2. Visited Avli on the Park to celebrate a birthday, and I was thrilled with how well they accommodate large groups, which can be a bit challenging in the city. Bobby, our server, was awesome and truly made the experience great. He was quick and patient with our group of 9 girls, all trying to decide what to order from such a yummy-looking menu. I started with a bottle of Avli's White, which was light and refreshing, and it paired perfectly with their Penne pasta. This dish was very creamy but not overly truffle-y--absolutely delicious, and I would come back just for this dish alone. Even as a solo traveler, they, when I requested for a table, they gave me a nice table with a nice view. The hostess was patient enough to wait for me to undress, to hand me the menus, but when I tried to make a conversation and I told her that I just moved to Chicago and the restaurant was highly recommended and I'm excited because I'm from Greece, she just solved it off and she smiled and left. There was no conversation, nothing special there. So it felt awkward when at a later stage she came to check on me because she had already been disengaged when I gave her cues to engage with me. Coming to the menu, my waitress, she was a lovely new young girl. Apparently she was new. As she recommended, she didn't know the menu quite well, but she went above and beyond to cater to my needs, but she was not knowledgeable of the menu. The drink that I ordered, the crazy lady spritz, it was full of ice, so technically not alcohol. The food in general was overpriced for the quantity offered. Saraki was different taste. Nothing wrong, it's not just the taste I'm used to coming from Greece, but when it comes to the octopus, it was a disgrace. I received the octopus burned completely, attached are the photos. And for the price that they offer, the quantity was like non-existent. Like in Astoria, New York, you find the same price, double the quantity of that and really good taste, not a burned food. Greens were a bit overstewed and fish could have been broiled for a crispier texture. The portion of fish was decent but it did not come with a side by default so it was quite small on its own (fries or rice would have been great). We stopped in to Avli for a recent weekday dinner prior to a performance at the nearby Harris Theater. We enjoyed our visit, but it was a mixed bag. VIBE: The restaurant is a large modern space with expanses of glass, metal and concrete (in keeping with the general vibe of the New East Side. The space features high ceilings, hard surfaces and a variety of seating options. It was still daylight when we were there, so our window table was well-lit, and there weren't a lot of other diners so noise was moderate. SERVICE: Staff was courteous and helpful, perhaps a bit reserved. Our server was attentive. Food was well coursed and came out quickly. FOOD: In general, everything was less flavorful than we would expect from a Greek restaurant. Avgolemono soup was beautifully presented, but needed more lemon. A beet salad was highlighted by very nice beets and walnuts, but the dressing was unpleasantly vinegary. Dolmades were quite bland, with hardly a hint of mint. Meatballs were the most flavorful item, but were slightly cold. Baklava ice cream for dessert was a real treat. Espresso was OK. There's a nice selection of wines, mostly Greek. I wish I could give it a higher rating, but the food was a bit lackluster. That having been said, though, the place has it's charms. We hope to return and sample some of the other dishes. read more
