The box she gave us had so many treats so we got the chance to sample a lot from them! Here were some of my favorites: the honey cookie. I've never had these before and oh my gosh I've been missing out! These are so sweet, moist, and addictive! The baklava was also a huge hit. Flakey, sweet, and nutty. Finally stopped by at this place having driven by it for years. The place looks run down but that doesn't deter me. I was determined to get the spinach pie and glad they have it. There's no other savory offering other the this one. The rest are cakes and pastries. The honey cookie and the walnut cake were a bit too sweet for me. But the spinach pie, oh! I have been meaning to try this neighborhood Greek bakery for a long time, so I finally popped by one morning to do a little sampling. I have to say - everything was Good and I'm really glad I finally went. Off the top of my head, I remember ordering the chocolate baklava, kourebiedes, spinach pie, and the custard pie. I maybe blasphemously have to say I don't always love baklava (the best ones I've had were in Greece lol), but the chocolate baklava was one of the best baklava I've had / it's really up there. My absolute favorites were the spinach pie (crowd favorite among the group of 3 of us that shared the pastries) and the kourebiedes. I did not expect to like this almond cookie as much as I did, but so good. Those 2 things are what I would get again next time if I didn't have a big group to share with. Yum. Also it's very obviously a family-owned spot, which makes the fact that they have PAINTED holiday windows across the various seasons even more impressive. I found myself walking by around Thanksgiving and was sooo impressed by the turkeys and the various painted things. I used to go to Hellas often when I lived in the Lincoln Square neighborhood in the '80s. I lived on Talman and Ainsley and the bakery was a short walk away. It's so nice that Gus and Toula are still the proprietors at their iconic bakery! I'm always met with a cherry greeting and conversation whenever I come to the shop. I particularly love the spanakopita... but if I'm having a sweet craving.. Gus's wonderful baklava completely satisfies. Wowza! My first time trying Greek cookies and I'm blown away! Everything is soooo good! Specially the almond flavor cookies and the tea cookies for me! What an amazing bakery! Such a hidden gem in Chicago! Greek family owned since 1970's...From the moment I walked in I was greeted by an amazing lady behind the counter. Very friendly and was very patient to explain what everything was in the display. She even gave us samples of some of the items. They were absolutely delicious! Small store front but full of amazing baked good that will keep you coming back for more. There is plenty of street parking. I was able to pull up right in the front. I do recommend heating up the spinach pies when you get home. I bought the spinach pie, custard pie, vegan cookies, and honey cookies. The vegan cookies were absolutely delicious! In the area I came across this shop on Yelp and headed over for a midday snack. I Got the spinach pie, Custard pie and almond cookies. The spinach pie was amazing. I only had half since they are pretty large. It warmed up great later when I got home and ate the other half. The custard is a sweet but not too sweet treat. Subtle taste of cinnamon in a vanilla custard filling wrapped in a thin flakey pastry. Excellent The cookies were also amazing. Delicious, rich almond taste. Parking can be tricky in the area. I managed to just double park while my girlfriend hopped out and secured the treats. You may have to park a few blocks away or get lucky one of the spots out front are open. That was my brief brainstorming of data points to help me structure this review. But to reflect back and take it slow, I love the owner, she's so very kind. Remember the folks who made it their livelihood to start the business. The second generation would help build the business. The third generation, well, I think they're driving a Tesla and probably not thinking of making Spanikoptika for the rest of their lives. So savor these old schools places and business owners because once they're gone, they gone. Oh the food, that's right, let's talk about that. The highlight of this place was the man (who I assume was the owner) working today! He was so lovely and kind! When we walked in he immediately greeted us and asked what he could get us. We ordered two spinach pies, an almond cookie and a chocolate baklava. The spinach pies were very good and I LOVED the almond cookie! The cookie was soft and had an amazing flavor! Awesome mom and pop Greek bakery. The owners are very nice, and this stuff is really homemade. Highly recommend. I must have come in on an off day the first time. I tried the walnut cake, almond cake, and an extra honey cinnamon cookie they gave me. Both cakes were kinda soggy and wet. Flavor was good. But the cookie was great. I'm glad I came back because then I tried the baklava, bougatsa (custard pie), spinach pie, and rum ball. All of those are incredible. I will dream of the custard pie. Great with recommendations. The bakery smells lovely. Clean, organized. I tried the honey and cinnamon cookie. It's soaked with honey, very aromatic. Taste pretty good. The chicolate ball is so fun to eat! It's got the texture of cookie dough (or so i assume lol never had raw cookie dough before) the closest texture i've had is red bean paste. It's soft, but it's not a cake. Nutty, sweet, delicious. The chocolate flavor isn't very strong, which works really well for this dessert. Will definitely be trying other things read more

Oh my Goodness, this bakery is a local treasure. I have no idea why they didn't have a line out the door and down the street. I'm staying at an AirBnB 2 blocks away and I wanted to try a local bakery. I was rewarded with a welcome from the owner that felt like home. She helped me pick out items to take back to my family. I received some assorted pastries from this place as a housewarming gift. Holy crap, it's SO GOOD. The honey cookie sounded meh... until I bit into it and realized how buttery, flaky, and savory it was. With a hint of spice. Just perfect. I've never been huge on baklava, but I'll make an exception for this baklava! I tried the chocolate covered one, and while that sounds like overkill it's not. The baklava isn't super sweet like most, it's just right. You can really taste the nuts and cinnamon. The chocolate coating has a hint of cinnamon too. Delicious! read more

I ordered a black coffee and examined the yummy-looking Greek cookies, pastries, and baklava. The owners, who told me they have been running the shop for 30 years, were so kind and helped point out a few of their favorites. I ended up going with a delicious almond cake that was moist and full of honey. The owners also gave me a walnut cookie since I told them it was my first time at their store! I took my sweets to go, but there's a few stools facing the window if you're looking for place to sit. I'm about an hour and a half from the city in indiana. There's not very many places near me that have spanakopita but our local Greek store and my Greek church at times. Aside from my Yiayia, this is hands down the best spanakopitas I have ever had. Pita is one of my favorite foods therefore I am picky when it comes to my pita! After walking by Hella's for the last 45 days every morning (on my early morning walk) I decided to stop by Friday afternoon. I was intrigued by the sign in the window that said, "Vegan & GF options. I was greeted with a smile and WARM hello from Georgia (the owners daughter). She explained what delicious treats were vegan. I decided on six cookies and a bird's nest. Well, to all my fellow vegans don't walk, run to get some of these treats to have with your fav coffee or tea. You're welcome. I can definitely see this gem being our "go to" bakery.
