Huge, really filling burritos. My friend got the Admiral burrito that had bacon inside which I liked more than my steak burrito. They have a nice selection of local beers too. The owner was nice and gave us a lot of good tips for sightseeing in the area. The only reason I'm knocking off one star is because the bartender (?) was borederline rude asking us to move out of the way while she was trying to get drinks out. First off, we were hardly in the way, second, she was way too frazzled for the small amount of people who were eating there at the time. Still worth your time. read more

After a camping trip to Dolly Sods, we were all eager to have a meal that wasn't rehydrated or in bar form. We planned to stop at Hellbender on our way home, anticipating that burritos would be an excellent way to conclude the trip. These burritos exceeded our already lofty expectations. Allow me to share some of the wonderful things about this restaurant: - The burritos are massive, roughly the size of one's face. - And feature fun, inventive filling combos - like Frito chili pie wrapped in a tortilla! - Seriously exciting vegetarian options are available, such as a seitan cheesesteak burrito with queso dip subbing for cheese whiz. - Local, delicious selection of craft beers on tap. - Spinach balls - the name doesn't seem promising, but you are in for a croquette-like treat - Homemade desserts - the key lime pie was so outrageously good that I got a second slice to take home (and I'm kind of a brat about key lime pie, because I make a pretty good version myself.) - Low, low prices. We were pinching ourselves when the bill arrived. In spite of the fact that this place is more than 3 hours away from home, I plan to arrange future camping trips that will bring us back to the Davis, WV neighborhood. Visiting Davis just for the falls but needed some place to eat and very pleased to come here! Our server was very sweet and patient. They had a nice little selection of beers and homemade lemonade. Serial and tofu are offered as meat substitutes. I got the Face Plant burrito with vegan chili. Super good chili flavor. Amazing little find in the mountains. They have great salsa and I was surprised to find tofu and house made seitan. The seitan was flavorful and had an amazing texture, great for us vegans and vegetarians. The burritos were huge, our server was friendly and the beer was cold. read more

We stopped in at Hellbender while on vacation at Black Bear Resort. The menu is lengthy with a good range of choices. We started with spicy, black bean and cheese tortilla. This was delicious! Just enough spice and flavor. After many mind changes and much deliberation I decided on a standard burrito with black bean and seitan added along with the lime/cilantro rice. The burrito was OK at best. The ratios were a bit off in my opinion. Too little black beans and too much rice. The seitan was OK, but chunks were bigger than I prefer for a burrito and texture was a bit off. My wife had the Lost Hiker which consisted of blue cheese, mushroom and guacamole along with the other regulars. Same issues with the first, a little bland and not proportioned well. We really wanted to love the food! It wasn't awful by any means, just wasn't anything special. The atmosphere was perfect; comfortable and had a nice fire going. The beer selection was good and we stuck to some of the local stuff (Cold Trail and the IPA). Owner (we think) was very pleasant and helpful. We bought a mug and a CD from a local artist. Both very cool. We will give it another shot the next time we are in the area! read more

3 important points up-front: Bathrooms are consistently clean. This is always a key indicator of overall kitchen and restaurant cleanliness to me. The kitchen looks orderly and clean. This place is VERY busy and it's obviously hectic for the staff yet they are overwhelmingly polite and helpful. That said ... Beer selection is excellent, both tap and bottle, and it's all fresh. Food is pretty OK. I assess this to be the best Mexican joint in greater-Appalachia. I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

Hellbenders is a local favorite. Went in and we sat in the top (the bar is in the bottom & quite crowded). A waitress came to take our orders, she was very nice and told us about their different draft beers. After ordering, our food was out in maybe 5 minutes. I usually build a burrito with black beans, rice, cheese, and sour cream. I also order my salsa on the side as well as queso for my chips, and they were very willing to split it all up. It was very tasty and huge, but it was mostly white rice. Other person ordered the shovelhead which consisted of pulled pork, coleslaw, bbq sauce, rice, and cheese. This burrito was even larger, and had so many different flavors. Halfway through our meal, a new waitress came on and introduced herself because she was taking over, we were almost done so she brought our check. It said the price, and we went down to the bar to pay. After handing the cashier the bill and money, she then said the total was wrong and needed more money. But, I will gladly pay for good food. read more

Wow just wow!! We were recommended this place by some locals. We got there and ordered the spinach balls. HOLY CRAP they were to die for!!!!!!! Then came the burritos. They were the size of a small dog. I got the Hellbender (buffalo shrimp) I had that with some sour cream. It was very spicy but I couldn't stop eating it. My husband got a steak, shrimp, lettuce, rice and cheese burrito and it was delicious as well. I would definitely recommend this place. For a town who rolls up the streets at sundown this place had the best hours around! The owner was super friendly and our waiter was very helpful. Since it was our honeymoon the owner gave us free dessert, YUM! Too bad they're not closer to a major city. read more

I had such a bizarre attraction even after going time 1 that I came back the next night for time 2. Time 2: Still 4 stars. Guacamole and Queso-still bangin. Chips still mediocre but made up for by awesomeness of queso and guac. The Hellbender (chicken)-wonderful. Omg. Blue cheese was wrapped in so wonderfully. Cilantro lime rice (duh). Steak Tacos-not enough cheese. Basically BF and I got different things but a swapped problem: not enough cheese... Time 1: 4 stars within the ranking of other area restaurants. Regrettably, my burrito was not as good as a Chipotle burrito, however, my boyfriends was far superior, so I maybe didn't make the best choice. Service-friendly and quick. Non-invasive (a quality always to be enjoyed). Queso-amazing. Made up for the fact the chips were something like from Sam's Club. Probably velveeta or something but it was still really nice and thick. Quite possibly my favorite queso I've had at a restaurant. The Admiral-boyfriend got this and it was amazing. Get this over what I got. Treehugger-excellent when smothered with queso, mediocre without. I just felt it wasn't cheesy enough. The broccoli in it was of wonderful quality though. The tortillas were of perfect quality and wrapped the burritos beautifully. Difficult attempt to eat without fork. Stuffed so big, but rolled so perfectly. I will come back. Great little burrito taco place. I also tried their steak and stout chilli. It was a special for the day and it was delicious. A little heat but offered up soooooo much flavour. A yummy side was their Cole slaw. Gotta try it!!!!!! I had chicken in my burrito and was seasoned and delicious. All veggies were fresh and guacamole was great, the avocado did the work in the dish. I think the only thing they didn't make in house were the tortilla chips. Pricing was no different than if you went to chipotle or Qdoba. The waitress was friendly and locally knowledgeable. The burritos ARE massive--I characterized them as morbidly obese. My dining companion and I could barely finish half of them. I got the "Hellbender" and found the hot sauce a little overwhelming, which made for a very monochromatic burrito in terms of flavor and texture. And the store-bought chips are very "meh." The fish quesadilla was fantastic though. It was filled with Tilapia smoked with applewood--smoked on the premises, according to the server. If I had stopped at the quesadilla and a beer, I would have gone away very satisfied. So I came up to Canaan Valley just south of Davis with nine Gay male friends to spend Thanksgiving. We got to our rented house at Timberline Resort the day before Thanksgiving, and we didn't want to worry about cooking dinner that late in the day, so we decided to go to some local restaurant for dinner. Regrettably the nearby restaurant at Timberline was closed, so I suggested we drive eight miles up the road to Davis and try Hellbender Burritos. It was an excellent choice. Despite a pretty heavy pre-Thanksgiving crowd in Davis, the folks at Hellbender were able to get us seated without much fuss. It's a cozy, low-key place with a good selection of beers, and five or six good craft beers on tap. Our burritos were HUGE. I ordered the "Gravity Check," which included chicken, bacon, cheddar jack, lettuce, tomatoes, and ranch dressing, and I thought it was really delicious. The food and drinks arrived quickly, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting and a bit rustic, with lots of woodwork, low lighting, and reggae music playing unobtrusively in the background; a hip but unpretentious environment. There's also a small bar counter to sit at if you just want to hoist a few. Though one of the guys said he didn't much care for his burrito, most of the rest of us agreed that the meal was pretty great and very reasonably priced. I ate here years ago and was awaiting its reopening after COVID lockdown...it is not the same. The food is not bad quality, but is BLAND BLAND BLAND. Salt seems to be the only seasoning they use. I used half a bottle of hot sauce to douse my burrito to make it palatable. That's ok if you don't like any flavor from spices I guess. Chips are from a bag. Queso, also bland and lukewarm. There appear to be 3 servers; two seemed nice, but the woman who took our order was downright RUDE. Told us we would not find a table and had to take our order to go (we found a table within 30 seconds after ordering) corrected my pronunciation of my order (unnecessarily) did not explain where to get our drinks, and seemed like we, as customers, were just bothering her. The bland food alone is cause for me to never return, but the rude service takes the cake. Will patronize one of the other restaurants in Davis/Thomas area in the future and will encourage others to do the same. read more

The spinach balls were sooooooo good. I got the tree hugger burrito and it was pretty meh. The broccoli wasn't cooked, the onions and mushrooms were just barely cooked. I don't know why Americans love to over stuff their burritos to look like baseballs instead of what burritos look like. The whole thing was just so unbelievably bland. The service was slow but good. The worst part was we were seated by the bar and it got so crowded over there that people would stand there with their butts up against our table while I was trying to eat. Not to mention that the waitresses would hit the table everytime they past by and getting around people so we hear "excuse me" about 100 times. Great, friendly burrito place on the main street in the little town of Davis. Burritos are creative, very fresh and taste great. We tried the Admiral, Hoodoo Voodoo and the Tree Hugger burritos - all excellent. Pumpkin cheesecake for dessert was superb. Even the salsa for the chips was first rate - fresh and delicious. I love this place, every time we come to Davis we have to come eat, might look like a hole in the wall but it's one of the best places I've eaten at.
