Pretty much a glorified chipotle. Food was good, the waitress was awful. She sat us and returned moments later and said "times up" and was dead serious. After we ate I asked her to split my bill, she huffed and puffed and told me to take it to the bar... For one, your the waitress it's your job, two it's not the bartenders job, three no... Still one of the best places between Elkins, Greenbank, Seneca, and Davis to eat, but that's not saying much. Tried a different burrito on my second vist and was equally unimpressed. Place has a total hippy vibe to it including our braless tall brunette hippy chick server in a mini skirt with princess Leia buns on the side of her head...first thing she did was insult us when we walked in the door and said she didn't know it was ugly shirt day...I really like that she did that. The server alone was so good and so much fun it would have been worth the visit. Food size is still huge. We got some queso and medium salsa this time which I highly recommend....really good. The place should re-consider their setup. There's very limited seating and there is nowhere to wait for a table without being in the poor servers' way. There's a "lounge" upstairs to wait in, but it was crowded and no where to sit/stand. We huddled near the bar and had to move every 30 seconds to make way for someone passing through. We were told it would be a 40 minute wait and it turned out to be an hour and 40 minute wait. In fact, from putting our name on the list to walking out it took over 2.5 hrs. For that reason, I won't be going back. The food was good. Good guac and hefty portions. Some of our party had burritos that were mostly rice. But others didn't. I would say only go with a small party and sit and eat at the bar. It's much faster and the beer is good and cheap. read more

The best food in all of thomas/davis/canaan/etc.. by a long shot. I had the namesake hellbender burrito and was definitely not disappointed. so fresh and tasty! We also split an order of fish dip, and I think that's one of the best post-ski appetizers that I've ever had. Pair that with a decent bar selection and it's a win every-time. You have to go here, I'm not kidding. The burritos are huge and delicious! We were in town staying at Blackwater Falls and we decided to try Hellbender. When we walked in, the main dining room is in the front room, and the bar is in the room after that. We sat in the bar area, which was very cozy. The atmosphere is very casual, which we love. The service was helpful and friendly. Most importantly, the food was delicious. I had a chicken, bacon, ranch burrito. Plenty of chicken and bacon in this baby. My fella had a vegetarian burrito with seitan and cheese and a bunch of veggies. It was overstuffed and awesome. Several beers on draft. We were slightly disappointed that there was only one local brew. That one local brew was really good though. This place seems like it's a favorite local spot for residents, and I can see why. We ate here on New Year's day on the way out of Canaan Valley. Didn't really know what to expect but we all were in the mood for a good burrito. This place did not disappoint. Atmosphere is eclectic and inviting. Waitress was nice and efficient and most importantly the burritos were very good. They are big but very tasty. The only reason it did not receive a five star rating was that the service was a little slow. The absolute worst service I've ever had. We waited 45 minutes for service. He walked around talking to people acting like we weren't there. The guy who works the cashier just looked at us and refused service. So my mom called him out asking will he serve us and he said he didn't want to serve us. Then when we walked out he was talking about us to the customers and staff. I AM DEFFINETLY not ever coming back again. My husband and I had lunch here on the way to Blackwater Falls State Park. Our server was kind and attentive, and we enjoyed the rustic atmosphere of the place. The food, on the other hand, left much to be desired. The "queso", as an earlier reviewer mentioned, is Velveeta cheese. Blech! The burritos are so big that a family of four could split one. They are not big on flavor though. I ordered the Hellbender, which was comprised of mostly rice, some bland chunks of chicken that were unseasoned and seemingly boiled, buffalo sauce that barely had a kick, and their housemade Bleu cheese dressing that tasted like ranch; there was not so much as a hint of Bleu cheese in that dressing. Thank goodness they offer decent desserts, although I suspect they do not make the in house. They had a chocolate peanut butter cheesecake that was very good. There are not many choices of places to eat in downtown Davis, so I can understand why this place has so many reviews, but the food is definitely subpar. read more

Found this place cause, well, it has a geocache in the back. We came the first day... we came every day afterwards. The food is fantastic. Hippie Tex Mex is absolutely an accurate description. Wonderful veggie options - and good for those meat eaters as well. The place is warm and welcoming with a wood stove in the front room. The bathroom has toys from the x files, a poster from the x files that says "I want to believe" and a cover of some fake newspaper about how rednecks captured Osama. The bar has the WV game on with lots of fans watching. Service was great even when crowded. I would go back to Canaan just to go to Hellbenders! read more

We've heard about this place for years and finally decided to stop in after we got rained out on a hike. Honestly, I don't understand the hype. The chips are straight from a bag of Tostidos, the steak in my burrito was overcooked and chewy, and you get a tablespoon-sized portion side of coleslaw that tastes like it's right out of a KFC meal. Worst part was our burritos weren't warm--the grated cheese hadn't even melted. You definitely get a lot of burrito for $9, but when you can't finish it because it's meh, the value certainly drops. I suppose this place gets rave reviews because it's one of the few places near the valley to get an interesting meal. Maybe it was an off day for Hellbender, but the food was mediocre at best. Or maybe it's just cool to tell your friends about a killer hole-in-the-wall burrito place when you return to the big city after a weekend ski trip, regardless of whether the food is actually that good. read more

But charge for simple sides fairly high compared to main items and be warned they don't split checks and won't take a card for under $10.00s. We searched all over the area for gluten free options for me. A local shopkeeper recommended Hellbenders and we were not disappointed. Almost all of their menu could be tweeked to meet my needs and the food was plentiful and good. The delicious guacamole was served in a soup bowl rather than a tiny deli cup! If you're a fan of drinking warm beer in a place that resembles the bottom of a dark hopeless pit this might be your place. From the store bought chips and velveeta aka "queso dip" pretty much everything was trash. My guacamole was colder than the beer. My closest comparison is when you go to your really poor friends house that's kind of dirty and they insist they are a good cook so you eat their less than average food and pretend like it's good cause it's all you have. Stopped by Hellbender Burritos after a day of skiing. So delicious. I got a steak burrito that was bigger than my face. It was juicy and flavorful. The actual restaurant is relatively small, but they have a waiting area upstairs with couches and a chess board to sit while you're waiting for a table. My one complaint is that they don't split checks. It's 2015, who doesn't split checks anymore? They make it clear from the beginning though, so at least it is not a surprise at the end of your meal. read more
