    Guacamole and Chips

3.5/5 After working up an appetite hiking Seneca Rocks, we headed back to Davis for burritos. You can order to go or at the bar and then seat yourself. There's upstairs seating and a handful of tables of different sizes in the front room. You're gonna feel awkward no matter where you want to stand in line to order. The guacamole is freshly made daily. It was a generous portion and better than I expected, if not a tiny bit under-salted. The chips were standard, it would really elevate things if they were made in house too. We had two hefty burritos that came out quick, and they didn't skimp on ingredients. The classic chicken burrito with cilantro lime rice, black beans, cheese and tomatillo hot salsa (3/5) and a specialty burrito "The Shovelhead" which was seitan in barbeque sauce with their horseradish coleslaw, rice, & cheddar jack cheese (4/5). It's worth noting that any burrito can be ordered as a bowl. The Shovelhead gets credit for uniqueness of ingredients, flavor profile, and overall it was texturally pleasing. Would order again! The chicken in my burrito was simultaneously a bit on the dry side, and the salsa was inexplicably sweeter than one would want a hot salsa to be. That said, I would totally order it again and make use of the hot sauces that were off to the side. I sadly didn't notice them until I went to bus my table :( the Frank's red hot on each dining table seemed a weird choice for the establishment so I was bummed to realize later that there were several other options (like cholula, el yucateco - both standard roja and verde) in a designated but easy to miss spot. Burritos are pretty much a main food group in our diet. We don't drink but there were some cool rotating taps. They had some other offering too, like kombucha and both sweet and unsweetened bottled tea. To sum it up, at $50 incl tip, this lunch for two was filling and perfectly acceptable.

We stumbled on this place while visiting Timberline. We had two dogs with us so we couldn't eat in. We decided to place an order to go. Got back to the lodge 30 minutes later only to find that one of the burritos that we ordered was missing. Bummer. Couldn't go back as we were too far away. Cute place, much bigger than it appears. Large portions of food. Queso and chips were awesome.

We got our burritos to go, staff was friendly and we got our food quickly after we had ordered. Underwhelmed with the black bean burrito but the specialty burritos were delicious and HUGE. Fun little spot in Davis, love their mascot.

Def seemed like a local favorite. Small place along the main street. There were some tables inside but we had a big group and opted to take our food. y nearby picnic benches. I got a burrito bowl. Fun vibes inside for sure. Since we sat outside, we couldn't try the local brews and opted for lemonade instead which came in a variety of different flavors. SO good!!

I love this place like a fat kid loves Little Debbie Cakes! Food, atmosphere and staff; All great! Davis itself is just one of the coolest little towns there is. Very quaint, very friendly and very hip. I have ate here several times and have never been disappointed. I personally always get a vegan or vegetarian burrito as most can be made that way and boy oh boy are they stupendously delicioso in every possible way. I don't think there is anything on this menu that isn't good to be honest. I've taken several of my friends here to eat as well who aren't vegan or vegetarian and they love it just the same. Also, there isn't a bad time of year to come to this area and enjoy a nice day of outdoor activities and finish it off with a nice fat burrito and a couple craft beers. Thanks Guys!!!

Stay away from the chicken. The guac was good but the chips are nothing special. The admiral burrito is excellent. Don't get the Hellbender.

This place perfectly personifies the spirit of Thomas, WV, and maybe even a little bit of Davis mixed in there too. The building is historic with tons of character, located right at the end of the loop as if you can't exit town without paying homage. The inside has soooo much character and is decorated perfectly in a mad hatter style. We often stop here for ice cream during our wanderings of Wild Wonderful West Virginia but have been known to get food from time to time as well. I would say that everything is honestly priced. They aren't trying to get rich and they aren't trying to rip off the community, just serve it and make a living and keep the doors open. The food is on the cheaper side and the quality matches. I don't think they're after any Michelin stars but more interested in just feeding the people. Service is on par with the attitude of the building and blended well. Just enough at just the right time. You might have to swap a few chairs from one table to the next to find the right combination for your party as I think all of the chairs in there are different. They also serve the community by hosting music, up to 300 events per year according to their website. That's one of the only times I skipped the fiddle when I was passing through was when they had a band with a cover and we just wanted food. We wanted to sit down and eat but were told we had to pay if we stayed but could take the food to go or outside without the entrance fee. I think we just went over to Picnic instead which is also a great local spot! See you next summer fiddle!

Full disclosure, this place has broken my heart and as a patron that has spent well over $10k here in the last several years I'm at a loss for words. I met my partner at the Billy - yeah that still happens - and its gutting and egregious to see such feckless owners swoop into this lovely Appalachian business and run this with the care one would expect from a a Wayfair adorned short-term rental. Yes, the bones are still good here, but the superficial facade of community runs as deep as the chipping yellow paint on the "Billy Arrow" outside. The new Billy, in my deeply storied opinion on West Virginia history, sees right through the propped-up idea of "community" and it equates to the long history of outside interest here in the Mountain State that saw countless greedy men move in to extract and exploit the resources of the good people of Tucker County. The good people of West Virginia. I see it everyday and its no more true then than it is now with the Billy Motel and Ish Kitchen. You can almost smell the lack of community awareness and grasp with every high priced pour of el Toro cocktails. Its sickening to see my favorite establishment in this state now owned buy careless ownership that at one hand talk about community, but stab their "own" in the back. Its not community focused. Big time. One would think an owner in a town of 600ish with about 15-20 potential employees that would work service would respect the roots laid out by those here. Those that came before. But, I digress, because as the former states, its all about making as much money as one can and screwing over the locals when one does swoop in as an out of state interest. Its so, so sad. I will no longer be spending a dime here and have canceled all future bookings as I had planned about $2k worth of lodging this Spring through Fall for work and leisure that brings me here from Fayetteville all the time. I am not saying its a bad spot and the locals there are doing their best, but just know this place is coal-baron full on and if they care so much about the community they so share I would love to see them put their money where their mouth is. But, as a native West Virginian, and if you know anything about the state, we all know that will not happen. Montani Semper Liberi (for the DC/AZ folks, that means Mountaineers are Always free )

**Restaurant Review: El Rey, Bridgeport, WV**…read more El Rey in Bridgeport, WV, is the kind of place that sneaks up on you. Tucked away in a strip mall, it doesn't scream for attention, but once you step inside, the buzz of conversation and the scent of something sizzling on the grill hits you like a freight train. It's clear you're about to experience something real. I ordered the "Fajita Canada," and damn, what a plate. It arrives at your table like a scene from a movie--seafood and vegetables still crackling on the hot skillet, steam rising, the promise of a meal that's about to wreck your sense of what dinner should be. The seafood was fresh, plucked from wherever it could be found, and the vegetables had that crispness you only get from knowing your way around a flame. The flavors are bold, unapologetic, and honest--exactly what you want from a place like this. It's not about presentation or pretense; it's about the food and the people who make it. The service is no-nonsense, and the space feels like a refuge from the bland sameness you find in so many places these days. If you're in Bridgeport and looking for something that's more than just a meal, head to El Rey. Order the Fajita Canada. Let it take you somewhere far from the ordinary.
