Beware of the biting puppy! Little dog Chance is my favorite part of this place, but don't get him too excited or he'll try to chew your finger off. Ayame has been cutting and dying my hair for a while now as I'm growing it out. She's very sweet and personable and pays attention to what it is that you want done with your hair before running at you with the scissors. I've had some uneven cuts and dyes, but no more than I have in the past (shit happens), and I think sometimes it just means being clearer in stating what you want. It's really the positive attitude of the person doing the work that means something. Go see Ayame! Also, bonus points for being one of the cheaper salons in NYC (and in Brooklyn for that matter). No matter how long I've lived here, I still can't get over the price of a haircut in this city, but some places succeed in easing the pain a little. read more

I've been coming to Hello Beautiful since 2010. I stumbled upon them while living in Williamsburg a few years back. I've tried other salons in between time, and I always end up coming back here. I now travel from New Jersey to get my hair done by Rebecca! Best highlights and cut ever. She listens to you and gives you what YOU want, while making sure you walk out looking glam every time. AVOID REBECCA. So I went in to get my roots touched up by having them bleached to a near platinum level. I had been looking for a new hairstylist for a while because a lot of the other professionals I went to were either too rough, overcharged, or didn't know how to use Olaplex properly... When I met Chris and he did my hair in the past, I was thrilled every time. He gave me a very fair price and took great care of my hair. So on this particular day that I called to schedule an appointment, I was told Chris no longer was with them, but Rebecca (the owner) was available. I understood she had worked on several celebrities in the past and thought she must be good then. I was pressed for time and really needed my hair done the next day. What a mistake that was. First of all, the vibes in the salon were very weird, kind of unsettling. She greeted with a smile and I sat in her chair, but then she started slobbering bleach all over my roots. It seemed much faster and less meticulous than when Chris did my hair, but then she put me under heat for a looonggg time. Too long, but it seemed she was barely paying attention to me. She had friends coming in to relax, she went into the basement for a bit, went outside, and as I was sitting there, I felt chunks of hair falling out of my head. But I thought it was my hair just slipping out of the clip. She rinsed me off and as she was brushing my hair after towel drying, I saw CHUNKS of hair coming out of my head, more than ever. I asked her if it was normal and she said, "You lose 100 hairs a day so this is normal." I already knew that, but this was wayyyy more hair. She styled and dried my hair, and after all of that, she charged wayyy more than I was usually charged for this shit job she did. After a couple of days, I washed my hair and chunks of hair were still coming out (I uploaded a photo of my mound of pink hair). I had bald spots around my head and a section of my head had super short hairs from my hair melting off. Keep in mind my hair was so long before that it reached my butt. When I called to express my disappointment, Rebecca didn't even take fault and apologize, but offer me a free 200 dollar keratin treatment and said, "Im sorry that happened to you." ...seriously? I spoke to my aunt who is a hairdresser and she said a keratin treatment will just a temporary fix and be more damaging in the long run... For those of you who want good service, go to Chris at Maxwell's in Brooklyn. I just went back to him and I'm so glad I did. read more

Justin has been cutting my hair for about 4 years now. I can't imagine getting it cut anywhere else; he does a consistently fabulous job. I have long straight hair and I ask him to keep the layers tidy and thin it out a bit. I imagine this will be my hairstyle forevah (it works with my face and is professional). I'm sure Justin could do hip, innovative things with my hair but I love that he has never tried to push some hip style on me or suggested a short cut. i came here to get an update but I guess I didn't describe in exact enough terms what I wanted... so definitely partly my fault. That said, I think I did get a semi odd "haircut" haircut that was too hip for me. I think this place would be best for short haircuts or for people with more daring tastes than I (I'm pretty hair conservative). Worth the price and very reasonable for the skill. Took me a bit to find a place that could competently do bright colors on kinky hair. I brought in a couple photo samples of the color I was looking for and they mixed the perfect shade! I went initially in mid May (currently Sept), the color stayed strong until at least the beginning of August. While it is faded, the quality of the dye they use makes it look like a very intentional lavender ombré now, and still gets me complimented everywhere I go. I still love it! I am wanting to get my royal purple back and will definitely be scheduling with them again soon! read more

Chris did my hair and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. After my previous stylist moved to LA, I had a hard time finding someone who knew how to deal with my hair. I have a lot of very thick, dark, and coarse hair (I'm Indian), so many places refuse to color it since it's a long, multi step process. That's not the case here! From emails, to consultation, to the appointment, everyone I spoke to had a great attitude, seemed knowledgeable, and didn't drag their feet or complain about my hair. I'm usually pretty fearful of changing my hair (long, relatively straight, full and hard to tame), but when I mentioned the direction that I was thinking of taking, Justin talked it out with me and helped me embrace a bit of change. She is all about customer satisfaction, and she is so attentive to listening to what you want. I have had everything done with her from cuts and coloring to deep conditioning treatments and keratin treatments, and I always leave her feeling amazing about my hair. Brooklyn is a bit of a ways for me but for kristina to do my hair, it's completely worth it every time. She is the only person I trust with my hair and I even refer to her as my hair doctor! First of all, I am not Brooklyn/cool enough for this place. But no matter -I love the magic they've worked on my hair! I've spent WAY too much money going to fancy salons to get non-traditional colors (I'm disappointed every time). Hello Beautiful has been the only place that has delivered for me in this arena and it's very reasonably priced. Kristina did an amazing job taking me to blue! I was nervous but she was very calming and in control. My hair has also faded beautifully which is a testament to how talented she is, I think. I went to Hello Beautiful for the first time in 2003. I was in college, on a tight budget ( of course) but like all BFA candidates, wanted a trendy haircut at a bargain price. Needless to say, Hello Beautiful did not disappoint! In fact, I had great cuts and color that even my Mom and Dad could appreciate! Alas, the days of the experimental hair color and trendy layered cuts have come to an end. However, I have tried the expensive Manhattan Salons and although many of them are really great you can get the same quality for a fraction of the price at HB. These days I maintain a classic cut with some nice buttery natural blond highlights and could not be happier with the services of Faith. She is simply the best! A beautiful natural color and a cut that cannot be beat whether you want something trendy, like what she has, or you're like me and are keeping it simple. Best of all- she listens! Faith in Faith. I can close my eyes and know I am getting the perfect cut. Every time. Plus, she cuts it so that it grows in well. She knows sometimes I am lazy and don't come in for a while. I have extremely thick wavy hair, and no one ever gives me the cut I want or can get it right. They just get cut happy and do what they want. Not Faith. She tells me what can be done and can't be done with my hair, and never tells me that the cut I want is not cool, or is too old or out of style. Even when I feel my hair is overgrown and in need of a cut, even when I haven't even bothered to style it, I get random compliments from strangers on my haircuts from Faith. At 1:00, my salon day from hell began. I bought a deal for an ombre color that turned into a botched highlight, and I immediately went to Hello Beautiful for help. Julie got me in the chair in less than 5 minutes and started to correct my hair. These ladies are the sweetest people and really listen to what you have to say. I've gotten my hair cut and permed there before and I am never going to consider getting my hair done at another salon. I've been going to Justin since I moved to W'Burg about 5 years ago. He used to have Galmour Garage (the sister spot to Hello Beautiful- they've since combined forces at HB). I was searching for a while, as I was always super dissatisfied after my cuts in NYC and searching for a stylist who understood my long curly hair and desire to keep growing it out. He has amazing reviews on the Glamor Garage yelp and that's actually how I found him in the first place. Justin is super intuitive and really listens. Sometimes I bring in a pic of a look I want or we just talk about it beforehand. He nails it Every Single Time. And good god, the price is amazing!!! I feel like a movie star when I leave that salon. So I've been saying I was going to cut my hair for the longest time now, and guess what. It finally happened! I was looking online, and finally something that totally caught my eye. I've never bleached my hair before so I was a bit nervous, but it looked so nice I decided to check out a few salons. I was wondering around the Northside of Williamsburg, and only a few places were open at the time. A few of them were a bit out of my price range. I was feeling a bit discouraged until I went to sit in my favorite little mall on Bedford, and remembered my cousin mentioning Hello Beautiful. It was still a bit early, but there was lovely lady and handsome gentleman inside. He introduced himself as Chris, and Rebecca was also on staff with her awesome pink hair. Chris was nice enough to answer my question after I showed him the picture I was referencing for my own hair. He was super nice, and gave me a quote that made my pockets happy. He said there was some availability, and I made an appointment immediately for thirty minutes after. It was so nice of him to help me out before opening hours! Once I was back in the salon, and in the chair we hit it off. We had some great conversations for my whole visit while he took care of my hair, and I even got to hang with Lita (cute little chihuahua) who graced me with her presence. Overall, I had a great time and got exactly what I wanted. I received great customer service. It was actually one of the only other times I walked out of a salon with a smile on my face. We exchanged information, and I know I'll be back to see him again I love my new do, and totally recommend Chris. read more

Yay for Hello Beautiful, and special YAY for Justin! When it comes to my hair, I'm a stylist's worst nightmare--I'm totally nervous, generally unadventurous, pretty paranoid.... In college, I'd make a good friend of mine go with me (yep, was that bad, you'd think I didn't know that hair grows back....) So it's a HUGE deal for me when I find someone and a place that I feel like I can come back to again and again. I've been going to Justin for almost FOUR years now (...where does the time go). He's a magician at layering my hair -- no feared Asian mullet, no weird step-like clumps, just the right amount of choppy, gets some texture and volume back into my really flat hair. (Full disclosure: before Justin, I would try to get my hair cut only by Asian stylists because I thought--and historically in my experience--they understood better how to handle my hair. Not the case anymore!) He also introduced bangs/side-bangs into my hairstyle, which I can't be without anymore. AND even bigger deal for this coiffeur conservative, I trust Justin so much that I FINALLY decided to dye my hair in the Fall. Got purple/magenta highlights, and the compliments have not stopped since! Justin's approach is very straightforward--no frills, just skills. He's super nice (but also very sassy, with acerbic, dry humor--not to be misinterpreted as frostiness) but when he cuts my hair, I've noticed that he does seem to want to focus (unless I insist on being chatty, which sometimes I do, in which case he is totally receptive). I presume this salon is only meant for color, because this has been one of the worst styling experiences I've had. 'Stylist' seemed quite uninterested in doing my hair & did not do anything that I asked, whatsoever. My hair looks flat and is full of hairspray. Last I checked, blowouts are done with a round brush, not with a flat one and some blowdrying. Atop of this, their website states that a blowdry is $35 (which is the only reason I tried this place)...yet, I was charged $55 (plus tax) for a half-ass drying session. For that price, I much rather have a normal, pampered session in the city. Save your money. read more

This was by far the worst hair salon experience I've ever had, I only felt welcome by two people which were Lola and Faye, they were so sweet to me! Everyone else seemed like they had a gross attitude and didn't even acknowledge you, the manager also was rude and she seemed like she "knew it all" anyways, I went there with hopes of changing my hair. I ended up with broken, dry, brittle, and damaged hair. I had the option of going back to put a toner and fix it, I took the offer and came out with worse nasty hair! I cried for two days..I got home and had to color my own hair because the color came out completely wrong. My hair broke for a week and my blow dry wasn't even complete my hair was still wet inside. They don't listen to you, they just give you hair that people would typically want. I would not ever go back, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! read more

After checking out their instagram I knew that I wanted Holly to do my hair. Holly was sweet, funny, and of course professional. She did my hair just the way I wanted it and I could not be happier. I really wanted to like Hello Beautiful. A friend of mine had her hair cut/colored here and recommended them to me. Since her hair looked great, I took the leap. Bad idea. I wanted to have a dark strawberry blonde color and instead left with just bleached hair and a terrible hair cut. If you could have given a name to my hair color after he did it, you would just name it Bleached. Because that's what it looked like. He over processed my hair and now I'm left with hay. I should have known when I asked him what shade of red would look best against my skin color and he told me turquoise. I didn't even bother having him try and fix it because he completely lost my trust. I had my hair color corrected elsewhere and was told the bleaching was unnecessary, my natural hair color would have taken the dark strawberry blonde fine. Not only did my hair color/cut suck but I too was received with sarcastic comments. I believe my friend used a girl named Kristen or Kristina. My advice, avoid Justin. read more

I'm not sure what has caused this recent turn of events, but it's unfortunate as I used to consider this place one of the best in the city. I must concur with the previous review in that all of the stylists are completely distracted ( so much so that I nearly had my eye taken out with a scissor). It appeared that there were 3x the stylists that has been employed previously and was so crowded the patrons were practically sitting on each other's laps. This may have contributed to the slip. However, she seemed more focused on everybody else's hair but mine. I ended the session as quickly and politely as I could and got the heck out if there. Not to mention that they've lost some key talent with Tom's departure, it's unfortunate that it's become all about churning a quick buck to which hair has become completely secondary. I'm sure my review won't affect their business but I do hope to save others from making a similar mistake. read more

Went here for a haircut about 8 months ago. The blowout and curls were not that great but the REAL issue came out when I washed my hair...it was extremely and noticeably uneven. Complete hack job. I went to Hello Beautiful because I was unable to get to my regular stylist. Big mistake. I believe Chris cut my hair. Thank goodness I was able to get my regular stylist to fix it without cutting most of my hair off. The coloring they do there looks amazing but I would never go back for a cut. read more
