Our waiter was from New Zealand and made some great recommendations for food as well as things/hikes to do around Banff. 10/10!!! I love this place with my whole heart. The ambiance was lovely, service was impeccable (everyone was so sweet), and the food went beyond my expectations. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday right at opening (4pm) without reservation and were sat immediately at the sushi bar. Reservations are recommended though as this place gets busy quick, as they have happy hour from 4-5pm. Starting off, we decided to grab the Yakitori Skewers and Cheeseburger Gyoza as appetizers. 5/5! Yakitori was a great small bite to get our appetites going and it came out very quick! As well as the cheeseburger gyoza! 5/5! If anyone know's California's In n Out, it gave me the same vibe. The sauce made it very interesting and delicious! For entrees, we ordered the Maui Wowie roll and Chef's Roll for 50% off happy hour. I would have to say the Chef's Roll was my favorite, but they were both pretty good! The sushi chefs were hard at work behind the counter and their work did not go to waste. We first came here for dinner and we had Liam taking care of us. He was very nice and accommodating, knows what he was doing. Food was great, more than we expected! We got the Spicy Pork Ramen and it was great! Pork was very tender and it was flavorful! We also got the Rainbow Oshi Sushi and we love it! The ambience is nice too! Very unique and interesting. Love the whole vibe that we came back the next day for happy hour. They do 50% off sushi for happy hour! Sushi for happy hour wasn't very impressive but it was not bad for a 50% off. Salmon BBQ roll, sashimi tuna/salmon was excellent. Came on a Tuesday evening, sat around firepit. Husband ordered the chicken skewers and steak that took at least 45 minutes to come out. I feel it's worth mentioning if you are looking to visit during peak hours. Server said though it's a sushi place primarily, their grilled steaks are a popular hit. So, let me start by saying I really, really wanted to love this. I know it's the mountains, and let's be honest: if you're expecting Hawaii-grade sushi, you're not with it. That being said, I think my husband and I experienced a very off night because, unfortunately, our food was a far cry from the multitude of positive reviews below. Let's get to it: 1. We ordered 2 sets of rolls for takeout, the chef's special and the Maui Wowie. The former has jalapeno, and the latter has mango. Why does this matter? There was absolutely *no* flavour in either roll. Like...none, aside from the old yellowtail that was mushy and on its last legs for the chef's roll. No mango for the maui wowie (tasted extremely watery and like it might be frozen in thin slices for convenience), no lime, jalapeno, or yuzu-kosho in the chef's roll (which SHOULD have a nice kick). The rolls were absolutely falling apart, and the rice didn't have any seasoning, to the point where I don't think sushi vinegar was used at all. 2. When we arrived to pick up our order, people seemed a little on the stressed and rushed side, even though it was pretty quiet in the main dining area itself. My husband and I both come from a food service background and noted that before we even got our food. 3. The rolls themselves were VERY small, and for $45 for 2 sets of 8, it wouldn't have been particularly filling for 2 people by any stretch. I'm all for small and full of flavour, but I would be lying if I said that this was a markup, even by mountain town standards. If we had spent the day hiking or were looking to be full after a couple of rolls...we would have been disappointed and, at that price point, do better. 4. When we called to discuss our order, they were very accommodating and offered a refund in full, which went super smoothly when we arrived to return things. The manager was super kind and understanding, and even offered us a free dessert (the Miso Pie), which was quite good. The venue itself does look fantastic and very "moody". Didn't sit down, so can't say more than that. Overall...maybe we went on an off night, maybe all the good reviews are enough to go by, but in all honesty, it's a future pass from us. If I'm completely honest: it's a trendy joint meant to attract the young and hip crowd for karaoke and drinks, as well as Instagram-worthy food. I get the hustle and love the decor, but we sure didn't get our end of the deal this time around and likely will not be back to try again. read more

*Bar Seating Only* We had 1.5 hours to kill for a dinner reservation and stumbled upon this place. Luckily, there were 2 seats at the bar open for us to grab a few drinks. Service is GREAT here! I got the Sake Flight and my boyfriend got the Lychee Cucumber Sour and we just shared to get a taste of each. Sake Fight was good except the Nigori one. The Lychee though...MUST GET!! Soooo yummy!! Kind of sad we didn't get to try the food though. Next time! I'm genuinely confused by why this place has such raving reviews. We picked this place because it looked decently busy while we were walking around and the reviews looked fantastic. I wasn't expecting sushi to blow my socks off in the mountains, but this place was far below my expectations. The sushi rolls (we ordered the maui wowie, chefs special, and spicy tuna) were so flavorless and even though I was hungry I could barely bring myself to finish them. The construction of the sushi rolls were bizarre; the rolls themselves only have avocado and cucumber then the fish is layered on top. The sushi rice didn't taste well seasoned at all and was mushy. We went to hello sunshine for a happy hour meal. I had the watermelon sake slushee which was delicious! I also had the boa buns which were very good. The restaurant was very cute, and had great vibes. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The service was quick. Before visiting, you should be aware that they bring out any plate as it is ready, so your party will not all receive their food at the same time. We were suprised by the "taco" item when it came out. We were expecting a traditional taco, but received something more like a hand roll. We had our last dinner in Banff tonight and took a chance on Hello Sunshine even though there are some pretty luke warm reviews. Thank goodness we did! We went all out given it was our last night and it was our favorite meal of the trip. Started with the cucumber lychee sour and loved it. My husband went with a ginger beer he also liked a lot. We also tried the elegant sake flight which did not disappoint. For apps, we split the tempura squash, the pork buns, and a dynamite roll. The sushi and the pork buns were great. However- the tempura squash was a home run. Honestly one of the best things we ate on vacation and for such a simple dish it seems like it has no business being as good as it is- but the Fresno vinegar really took it over the top!! For our main we had the spicy pork ramen which was delicious. We finished the meal with the chocolate matcha ganache. Reading the reviews, im wondering if we even dined at the same restaurant. I was convinced to dine here seeing a review from an LA foodie, but I was severely disappointed by the quality of sushi. Starting with the sushi, we ordered the Maui Wowie and Chefs roll. The rice was a weird (mushy) texture and didn't quite taste like sushi rice. I was surprised the filling was only avocado and cucumber and the only fish was a thin slice on top. For $18+ rolls, I expected more complex flavors; so given that price, the quality was just off putting. As for other dishes, the pork ramen was decent. The ramen was more like egg noodles (Mì if you're Viet) than ramen noodles which I found funny. The squash tempura was good given I always go for the pumpkin tempura when picking through vegetable tempuras. The scallop carpaccio was probably my favorite. If you enjoy sushi, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. read more

With the prices they charge those are wayyyyy small. Appetizers were meh....except the kimchi cucumbers. We ordered 4 rolls and none...yes none impressed us! The teriyaki chicken has a gluey sauce on the side and was borderline undercooked. The bartender, Asian guy with tatoos should be focusing on mastering his cocktails instead of yapping away with bar customers. Had a great dinner here with my fiancée. It was a fairly last minute choice so the only seating we could get was at the bar. I loooved this place. We had reservations scheduled and it's $20/person for no shows. Unfortunately we had a tour go over 1.5 hours making us run around 40 min late for our reservation. We did call and they were super friendly and accommodating. We were able to hit the end of happy hour and honestly... I'm not sure that I've had such amazing service anywhere. The sushi was delicious as well as the drinks. Everything came out super quickly, which was awesome because we were all starving after being out all day. We tried the chocolate sake (bomb) super fun and really tasty. Had also tried the punch, lychee martini, and a couple pitchers of the watermelon slushee drink (we all loved this one--and that it was on fire). Also had all of the happy hour rolls, crispy rice, chicken karaage. Everything was pretty on point. The only roll I'd probably opt out next time is maui wowie. It wasn't bad just wasn't as good as the others-- a little underwhelming. The other 3-4 were perfect! At the end, they let us choose a dessert for my friends birthday-- the miso pie way exceeded our expectations-- was sooo good. We ordered 3 different rolls (spicy tuna, maui wowie and the chefs) The spicy tuna had the most flavor but the others truly tasted like... rice. Plain rice. Every roll was exactly the same on the inside with cucumber and avocado, a bunch of rice... and that's all. No crab or anything else. To make each roll they would only change the fish ontop so the price is absolutely insane for what you are getting considering they can pre make every roll. Mary-Anne was not only friendly and made us feel like she genuinely loved her job and happy to have us, but knew the menu and specials super well, was able to make recommendations without coming off as pushy. My partner and friend tried one of the specials and couldn't stop saying how good it was. As a vegan the options were accommodating and delicious, while the rest of the menu left my partner and friend with nothing to be desired - the food was incredible all around. I'm mostly here to warn about the most agregious thing to me -- the rice. We ordered several dishes with rice (nigiri, hand rolls, pressed sushi, sushi rolls, and sablefish) and ALL the rice was gummy to the point it stuck to my teeth. What??? Came here for Valentine's day during my trip and ordered their Valentine's specials. It came with four courses and a dessert. We got sake pairing to go with our meals (five different drinks for $35 per person; totally worth). The waiter is amazing and very attentive to our needs. Our first course was lobster miso chowder with Hokkaido scallop. It tasted more like a lobster bisque but smoother texture and it was amazing; sweet without being too heavy. Second course was salmon gravlax, which the cured salmon was delicious with greens served and great presentation. The third course included maki and press rolls: yellowtail maki with tuna and spicy salmon press roll. My favorite is the spicy salmon press roll that just melts into your mouth (no wonder it is highly recommended on their regular menu). For the main course, my partner and I got the wagyu and the sablefish. They are both delicious but the sablefish definitely amazes me more with the nice crisp on the skin and softness of the fish on each bite. The miso butter is so light and goes well with the vegetables, even my partner who doesn't like mushrooms enjoyed the dish. I absolutely love the kabocha squash on the wagyu. The dessert was way larger than I expected and it was perfect to end our meal. Personally, chocolate was a bit rich for me but it was balance by the tart and matcha cream provided. Miso soup tastes fresh (not like the instant type). Recommend the shrimp and scallop skewer - shrimp and scallops were really tender and tasty. The sauce was the right amount that did not overpower the seafood. It was a little bit on the salty side for me. But I usually eat really light, so it's probably just fine for most people. Service was prompt, knowledgeable and friendly. Our server, Jess, offered recommendations on many menu items, including sushi and sake. We were smart enough to follow her recommendations and loved all the selections. The sushi was very fresh and flavorful and the warm sake paired really well with all the plates. We came by here our first day in Banff for dinner and was completely taken by surprise how pleasant our meal was. First we didn't have reservations and walked up prime dinner time around 7pm. The restaurant was busy and there was a line of people waiting to be seated. We weren't picky and didn't mind getting seated outside on the benches. We got seated right away. Second, the staff who helped us were lively and super friendly and got us really excited to eat/drink here. Finally, everything we ordered including drinks were delicious! I had everything pictured except the salmon bowl (out of feeling full). The food were very flavorful not to mention plated artistically. I mean, the eyes gotta eat too, hehe. Anyway, I still dream about this meal. LI wouldn't have mind coming back everyday, but of course we couldn't because there are so many other dining options to try out.
