If you're stopping through Guilford with a sweet tooth, you *have* to come here. Yes, it's expensive, and that's probably the only reason why this place will ever get low star reviews (perhaps lack of seating too, but its small size adds to its charm for me). But you have to consider what you're paying for, which is basically a momentary trip to Europe for both the quality of ingredients and excellence of baking. The desserts here are just on another level. If you can't discern what's special about the food here, it won't be worth the price to you. Wonderful French style bakery tucked into a small little shopping area off of Water Street. Everything we've ordered here has been outstanding. Love this place! It was difficult to find the first time around since my gps took me down a main road and the tiny shop is actually located behind thru a parking lot. The inside is lovely, feels like stepping into a pastry shop in Europe. The front window is packed out with all the fresh goodies but it's rather popular and first come first serve so make sure if you're after a specific items come early! Coffee and tea are served in cute steel mugs, the staff is friendly and the almond croissants are unbelievable. There is also outside seating in warmer months. Purely and simply fantastic French pastries in CT. The star of the show (for me at least) is the croissant. Hen & Heifer makes a true, real butter croissant that is of the same greatness as those found in Paris. If you want a croissant, come early! They open at 8 and are generally sold out by 9:30, barring inclement weather. Their other baked goods are quite good as well. Excellently made and not pressing too high on the sweet scale. It's hard to go wrong here, and if you like chocolate I recommend the Chocolate pot de Creme. The Alfajor is also worth a try. It melts in the mouth and tastes very much like a complete thought. I had been dying to visit this shop being a huge fan of all sorts of baked items and working in a cupcakery myself. The shop is quaint, adorned beautifully and the baked goods are just exquisite. It is a little disappointing how quickly they run out of certain items (although I had read reviews and was prepared for it) but what we did have was delicious. The best coffee cake I have ever tasted hands down. We also tried a salted caramel cookie and some of their toffee. Both buttery and delicious with amazing flavor balance. I can only comment on the macaroons...I tried a raspberry one and the middle was a large raspberry candy jelly...awful. Having had wonderful macaroons at Laduree in NY ...and Paris...this cookie would be fine, IF, it had a thin filling..not a thick candy melted in. I threw it away. I was visiting a friend in Guilford, and when we wanted something sweet, she said she had heard Hen & Heifer was amazing. We stopped in 2 minutes before closing, and they greeted us like they had all the time in the world for us. After educating us on many of their treats, we got two salted caramel cookies, two different cream puffs, a chocolate mousse dessert, and the chocolate shortbread. Oh! My! Goodness! I've never had such an amazing treat - everything was decadent, yet somehow light at the same time! I admit to being a value shopper; I am always looking for a bargain, so I expected to be "just looking", but I found some reasonably priced goodies. I bought a pistachio financier for $3.50, it was fabulous, and not tiny. I bought a pretty good sized slice of sorghum pound cake for $4 (haven't eaten it yet), my wife bought a pretty good sized slice of chocolate pound cake for $4 ("nice and moist, very chocolaty, very good.") I noticed that a whole olive oil lemon cake is only $25; not expensive at all. So, while there are some very pricey items, there are also some good values. But regardless of your price point, from what we have eaten and looked at so far, the quality is very high. A man and woman took turns helping us; they were both very pleasant and attentive, but not at all pushy. It was closing time, but they did not rush us; they remained pleasant, patient, and attentive. Croissants are perfect and buttery, scones have that proper crumble and a slice of the coffee cake is heaven. There is real artistry at work here and devotion to a craft. The macarons are simply amazing. Like so good that I actually bought 18 of them one day just so everyone at work could have a taste and I could still have several left over for myself. I drive about 25 minutes out to Guilford at least once a week to get these gems. Haven't tried anything else but the sea salt caramel chocolate square things look just as amazing. I would give only 1/2 star if I could. This place only cares about itself, NOT the customers. They don't make croissants on the weekend I went in, and I called before the weekend to request them and they no longer allow orders for them to be picked up. The good thing, is that Guilford Food Center has them, and has seating, and a happy atmosphere and even better coffee. I will never walk through the door of H & H again. We were visiting a friend in Guilford having come all the way from San Francisco Bay Area and happened upon this bakery for a morning pastry and coffee. Wow what a treat! My almond croissant was fantastic and my moms coffee cake was just as great. The coffee was local grown and superb. This is a very cute french patisserie that obviously a lot of thought and effort has gone into. The owner also was super friendly and spoke so highly of the star baker. This is a teeny tiny little bakery tucked away by the Guilford Green. You head inside and see a beautiful bakery case with what they have available. Their friendly and polite staff will help you make your selections. Everything is always delicious, but I highly recommend the salted caramel cookies, croissants, and their fruit/yogurt/granola parfaits.
