We stopped here on our way through town for a late breakfast, and it was a fantastic find. From the moment we walked up, the staff was friendly and welcoming. We had no trouble finding street parking, and with the humidity picking up, we were happy to grab a table inside. When we asked for recommendations, the pancakes were the clear favorite. They do take about 20 minutes to prepare, but they're absolutely worth the wait. The waitress also suggested ordering just one pancake for our son since there isn't a kids' menu, and we should have listened! These pancakes are incredibly thick and filling. We also ordered the chicken and waffles, along with eggs, a biscuit, and potatoes. Everything was delicious and really hit the spot. The portions were generous, the food was fresh, and the service made the experience even better. While it was not a busy time and empty tables were plentiful the Hostess stand seemed dazed and confused. Some attention to efficiency needs to happen here. The food itself was actually pretty tasty. The Isla Verde was delicious. A house infused basil and white rum with coconut cream, basil syrup and a balsamic glaze. I went with the Chia Pudding Bowl. The coconut chia pudding was very good and the house granola was excellent. I was impressed with the freshness, amount and many different fruits that come with this bowl. I would definitely order it again. But the slow and lacking service, continuously having to ask for drinks and various sides multiple times left a sour taste. It was like they didn't care. I heard a lot of great things about this restaurant. I would prefer the Johns Creek location because it is the original location. Well, this place was still good. It definitely lacked flavor. We waited nearly 40 minutes for any food to come out. I will say the staff isn't rude about the hostess stand needs to be more organized. They were not rude or anything, but our table kept getting given away to other people it happened twice and I really wanted a seat inside because I'm allergic to pollen, but we got sat outside. I was too hungry to care at that point. And now I'm suffering from allergies this very next day. The breakfast sandwiches I don't think I would order these next time with the cheese because the sandwich itself was really good. I just felt like the cheese on the brisket sandwich and on this breakfast sandwich was overpowering. I didn't even realize I had pesto in the breakfast sandwich. I legitimately thought was some type of avocado sauce since avocado doesn't really have that much flavor. If you're thinking about getting pancakes, please only get one order because they're massive. They really put the cake and pancake, and it was more of a cornbread pancake. The pancake took I think an hour to come out on the menu. It said 20 minutes cook time basically whatever they quote you it's a lie. I can't blame them completely because the restaurant was pretty busy. We made a reservation and even checked in with the house stand, and somehow our table got given away twice. The best thing about this place would probably be the potatoes and the bacon. Everything else I think was overpowered by the cheese flavor as I stated before I think the John's Creek location was better. It is the original location and they have the OG chef. I think I would come here again maybe not for Sunday brunch and definitely sit inside. I also wouldn't come when it's super busy because the cutlery was not very clean. I did take my napkin and kind of washed it off with my water. My spoon legitimately had leftover maple syrup on the hand. I really wanted to try this place because it was relatively new and I had heard good things about it. I went there with my daughter and while it was a good overall experience, it wasn't quite great. The interior looked charming and inviting, but our table was quite small and barely had room for the plates and glasses. Our initial interaction with the host and server was positive. They were quick to take our beverage and food order, but they were inconsistent in checking on us after the food arrived. The food truly looked amazing in all the photos we saw, but it didn't quite taste as good as I had hoped. We tried the oat hotcakes which tasted flavorful, but very dense and dry. We later asked the server if they were intended to be served with syrup. She then apologized and said they must've forgotten our syrup, which would explain why they tasted so incredibly dry. I'm basically glad I finally had the opportunity to try the restaurant, and I did enjoy the breakfast egg sandwich, but the rest of the items were not memorable enough for me to consider returning anytime soon. This brunch spot is INCREDIBLE! I enjoyed everything I ate here and cannot recommend it enough if you're in the mood for high quality breakfast food in a cute location. I visited on a Thursday around 11am and found it about half full, as you would expect during the week, however my friends have been here on weekends and say it gets very busy, especially since they don't take reservations. The drink cart outside is adorable and allows people to sip away as they wait for a table. Genius! We sat outside on the patio surrounded by trees, far enough away from the street to feel secluded. Our server was very kind and had extensive knowledge of the menu. Of all the items we tried, the Oat Hot Cakes stole the show. I loved the crispy outside contrasted with the fluffy inside, and various seeds and grains that make it a hearty and healthier option. The poached blueberries and maple syrup were great, but I also recommend spreading their jam in between the layers for an added kick of flavor. This dish is massive, so be prepared to split with someone and take home the leftover. They reheat really well! Another high praise item was the house brined and crispy fried chicken thigh. They also definitely need another person at the front desk. The pork belly hash came with pesto sauce that I enjoyed, however, I wasn't told eggs would be $4 extra when getting my ordered taken. The regular hash comes with eggs. The service was beyond expectations! We were seated immediately on a busy Saturday morning on the porch with heaters. Our server was delightful and very attentive. The food is unbelievably tasty and quite health conscious but still delicious. We got the oat pancakes and they were huge but so yummy. I ordered the French toast with a side of the chicken thigh. The chicken was salty and didn't have a good taste. I ate a small bite and asked to replace it with a different meat. Hen Mother Cookhouse is always on my top brunch spots list in Atlanta. We have been to the John's Creek location many times but this it the first time at this location. We came in at a little before 1pm on a Sunday and were really surprised that we found a close parking spot and a 5 minute wait when we checked in. We quickly realized how awesome the staff is here. This place is run exceptionally well! The host at the front was so nice and he made us feel right at home. Our server Aimee was awesome too! Greeted us quickly and took our drink orders and brought them right out. In fact everything came out out quickly! The restaurant was a historic home right in downtown Alpharetta. Such a great set up and homey, although the seating is a little tight. They do offer both indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered off the regular menu but they had some really great looking specials. I had the chicken and waffles, soft and fluffy waffles with warm maple syrup and perfectly cooked and seasoned fried chicken thighs on top. Sweet and savory, and with a side of bacon, this hit the spot! My wife had the brioche French toast with a blueberry and whipped custard topping. Her only criticism was that the French toast had a metallic taste to it. I think the cast iron it was served in gave it an off taste. At first I thought maybe there was lemon in the dish but it was metallic whatever it was. Might not get that again. I had a nice cup of Earl Grey in a little tea pot. Such a great spot of tea! What caused me to do so was the manager. We ordered a mixed latte-drink which was un-drinkable. Our server (nice enough) informed the manager who in turn came to speak with us. Much to our disappointment, the manager was unpleasant and informed us that she (the manager) could not remove the drink from our bill, something totally BS - any restaurant can remove a rejected item from a bill. (On a personal note, I rarely ask for items to be removed from a bill (only when unconsumable), but in ALL the cases that I have over the years never once had I been told that such "could not be removed" from a bill.) She then "kindly" informed us that we could swap the drink with another, but that she would have to bill us for a second drink. We were so put off by her that we have decided never to return. Thanks manager, on behalf of a throwaway $8 latte, you have alienated a family which which will in turn inform its social-circles of your service. Tried out Hen Mother and had a great overall experience. We only waited about 15 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The portion sizes were generous--plenty to take home and enjoy later. One thing I found odd was that the breakfast potatoes weren't cut at all, but they actually made for great smashed potatoes with dinner, so no real complaints there. The patio had a really nice, laid-back vibe with lots of families and groups of friends enjoying themselves. My only real critique is the music--it was more club-style and played at club-level volume, which didn't quite match the relaxed brunch atmosphere. A more fitting playlist would go a long way. The only thing I'll say is that if you like your pancakes drenched in maple syrup, you'll probably have to ask them for a second cup of it on the side. I'm back in ATL so that means it's time for another food review! Today, I visited Hen Mother with my bestie and her babies. The line was out the door! When you walk up, there is someone serving their cocktails at a bar cart. Once seated, we quickly ordered our food. And when I say it was delicious!! I had the chicken biscuit and it was phenomenal! 10/10 recommend. The chicken was well cooked and seasoned. The potatoes served on the side were crunchy on the exterior and soft like butter on the inside. The pancakes are huge!! I had one of the cocktails and it was as strong as it was flavorful. Finally a weekend opportunity to eat here especially knowing the weekends are when they have their famous cinnamon rolls. We arrived around 11:00 am-ish on Saturday. They don't take reservations and we put our name in for a party of 4 and it was a 25-30 min wait. Definitely not a bad wait while enjoying the morning coolness. Lots of nice shade trees outside to hang out underneath plus some seats outside at Citizen Soul (not open till 4pm) while waiting. We were seated outside on their covered patio and it was very comfortable. The fans helped to keep us cool but it also was a cooler morning than some. Our server #teamtyler was awesome!! He came greeted us, very, very personable, great personality, engaging, entertaining, very friendly, and attentive to our needs always checking in on us during our meal. Now that is what makes a phenomenal server!! Started our breakfast with the cinnamon roll which was good, but more of a sweet dense yeast roll. Not the very moist, buttery cinnamon roll I'm used to. Definitely shareable between 4 people. We had them put the whipped pecan, maple Cream cheese yummy on the side (husband can't have nuts). Now in my opinion that is what made the cinnamon roll scrumptious!! I saved what we didn't eat and put some on the Brown Butter Fluffy pancakes. lol My husband ordered the Brown Butter Fluffy pancakes which were super incredibly fluffy. Two of them with warm maple syrup. The look and texture reminded my husband and I of corn bread but sweet. They are very good and worth the splurge. I also ordered the Quiche on the specials menu. Now let me tell you that was ahhhmazing. Excellent flavor, creamy from the cheese used, the crust was so flaky and melted in my mouth. In fact we brought home 11/2 pancakes and some quiche. The hot coffee was also very good. My daughter ordered the Market Hash and two eggs and she was in awe of how many veggies came with it, but too vegetable heavy for her and not enough of the other stuff. She said it was really tasty though. My son-in-law ordered the French toast. He also said it was good. I asked if someone asked you "should I order it?" What would you tell them? He took a while to answer me, so I assumed "no". But to be fair he isn't really a breakfast food person, more like a breakfast burrito person. Now I must tell you my daughter really really enjoyed her hot cocoa. She couldn't stop talking about it because she loves, loves marshmallow and on top was a float of marshmallow fluff on top. She was in a bit of Heaven. We loved the ambiance of the old home the restaurant is in, the garden when dining on the patio. Some of the customers ordered drinks which looked very good. Our experience was very good and might be a place we would enjoy again. It does seem to get quite busy as it's in downtown Alpharetta and there are many churches around that enjoy dining after services. Parking is free in the garage walking distance to the restaurant. Checked out Hen Mother Cookhouse after much hype from my own sister. The interior is pretty inviting - lots of wood, bright... a little packed but open. It's got this warm, rustic thing going on. It's pretty loud though, like dining at Rumi's. Not the spot you want to catch up with a friend. The breakfast tacos were solid and comes in threes. The omelette was massive like the size of a calzone. Biscuit was a bit ... crunchy? The matcha latte was really good, though a tad sweet. Place has more rules than Monopoly which is a bit odd for larger parties -- no reservations, 60-minute limit, splitting checks evenly (5+ parties). If you're going with a crowd, just make sure you read over the stuff first. Service was efficient but not exactly warm. Our server looked mildly annoyed when we asked to split the check in our 5+ party. If you can navigate the rules and don't mind the noise, the food is pretty good and portions are generous. I got the pork belly sandwich (special) and my party got the breakfast tacos and French toast. There is absolutely no drop off in quality or flavor from the original location. The pork belly sandwich was awesome and I am glad I went with the wait staff's recommendation of adding the egg, which comes on top. The flavors in the sandwich are to die for and you get a generous amount of pork belly to say the least. The breakfast tacos are something that, as of now, are not offered in the Johns Creek location, so we tried those. They are also very flavorful. As usual, the French toast has to be the best I have ever had. You will not come away from this place hungry. Come hungry as they give you a hefty amount of food on all dishes. We ended up taking some food to go. The atmosphere in here makes dining out for breakfast/brunch fun. The place is lively with music and the wait staff is always very attentive and friendly. They are knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu and never miss on their recommendations. I would advise to come early or be prepared to wait for a table. However, the wait is well worth it. We had a group of 4 on Sunday, 10/6/24, at 1 pm. It was opening weekend, so there was an especially long wait and we weren't seated until 2:15 pm. But we just walked around the cute downtown! Plenty to see while we waited. We each got our own entree and we split the Pancakes ($14). I got the Seasonal Avocado Toast ($16.25), with sweet potato fries, and it was all amazing. My friends got the Breakfast Egg Sandwich ($12.95) and Market Hash ($16.85). Everyone loved what they got. This location is absolutely adorable! Love the house-feel. Service was great. Hen Mother is one of my favorite restaurants. My sister and I love meeting here. The owners and staff are amazing. We've had Dom as our waiter both in Alpharetta and Johns Creek. He's always so friendly and has a smile on his face. The cinnamon rolls are huge and enough to share with 2-4 people. The weekend special quiche is what I normally choose. read more
