My husband and I were excited to try the Foundation Social Eatery. The atmosphere is nice and lively, but the lighting is so dim my husband had to use his phone light to read the menu. We started with martinis and (how can you mess up a martini) the olives had no flavor, and we asked for more vermouth because the martinis tasted watered down, which was strange. We also ordered a bottle of Cabernet sauvignon, which was good. We ordered the mussels appetizer, which was very tasty and served with French fries, also tasty. My husband ordered the steak au poivre, which was full of gristle, so he sent it back. I ordered the Morel pasta dish, which our waitress recommended. This dish was not good at all. The mushrooms were diced tiny with some strange flavor, which I couldn't eat, so I sent this back! My husband then ordered the scallops, which were very good. I ordered the Baratta which came with sourdough bread. The Baratta was good, but there was about a half cup of chopped parsley on the plate, which was very odd. It was like a parsley salad, which is inedible. Parsley should be used as a garnish or a sprinkle as a flavoring, not as a main component like a salad. I didn't say anything to the waitress, because I was tired of complaining. We were very disappointed in this restaurant and will not be returning. read more

As a self-described foodie, I'm always searching for restaurants that offer creative, thoughtfully prepared dishes with plenty of variety. Foundation exceeded every expectation. I ordered every dish the staff recommended, and each one was outstanding. Julio provided attentive, knowledgeable service, and you can tell Chef Mel and his wife, Sandy, have poured their hearts into every aspect of the dining experience. Julio also suggested adding an order of bread to soak up the incredible sauces, and I'm so glad he did--not a drop was left on the plate. We sat at the bar because it was packed. Each of the bartenders waited on us in a well choreographed routine. They were all very nice and seemed to enjoy being there and engaging with the customers. For dinner, I had the confit pork ribs appetizer with a side of fries. Both were very good. Meat literally fell off the bone. There were four large ribs so enough for main course for sure. Fries were nicely seasoned with their own special flavoring. Husband had the special catch of the day which was a Chilean sea bass. It was on a puree of something he doesn't remember but thinks it was a white bean of some sort. He actually said it was the best piece of fish he's ever had!!! We split the Tropical Mousse dessert which was light and refreshing and quite yummy. Lively crowd, nice large patio and outdoor seating area tucked away. I would absolutely give Foundation 5 stars if the service had been better. I was nervous about making reservations on the enclosed patio, and it did feel like we were the overflow afterthoughts of the wait staff. We waited over 15 minutes before my fiancé asked for someone to come to our table to get drinks ordered and provide us water. That said, it was warm and sufficiently cozy outside. The food and drinks we ordered were excellent, however. We got the charcuterie and wine and beer to start. I enjoyed not only the meats and cheeses selected, but the house bread, pickled vegetables and persimmon, and mustard and cranberry chutney made lovely parings. I ordered the hangar steak, which was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy but with a flavorful char. It exceeded my expectations. My fiancé ordered the osso bucco cassoulet, which was the star of the show, in my opinion. I would definitely visit again and sit indoors because the inside vibe was lovely. Great place! Traveled for work and sat at the bar. The inside is nice but can get really loud. The bartender was fantastic and very knowledgeable. We ordered the bread service, The Grey Fox (spirit free beverage), Gulf Crab and Spaghetti, and Grilled Hanger Steak Au Poivre. They do have a rotating seasonal menu, so some of these items may not be there the next time we go unfortunately. The bread was super fresh and loved the butter and oil that came with it. The Grey Fox was refreshing and was good, but didn't particularly stand out to me as a mocktail. Their entrees really impressed me, well balanced out flavours and perfect portion sizes. It's always so rare to find a place that'll have just enough food to where you're full but not over stuffed or hungry. For dessert, we decided on the ice cream. Their seasonal flavours that we selected when we went were a mango sorbet and orange ice cream and was plated on a bed of slightly salted shortbread crumble. The burger was nice yet the pickled onions were a bit overpowering so use them sparingly if you plan to put it in your burger. The rhubarb dessert was my favorite. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of it! My absolute favorite cocktail that is hard to find in a lot of places was offered as a dessert cocktail, and it was the perfect amount of minty + sweet. Anyways, the interior is amazing and an aesthetically pleasing gem for your eyes to feast on before the food arrives and the belly can have its feast. Bolognese. A MUST order every time! Did a split order with my date so we could eat more other foods. More foods = better. It is a mouth dream come true of sensations and feels. Trust me on this! Usually my first go to is the Spanish octopus. By far the best I've had anywhere, ever. This time we opted for the fish tin and escargot instead. The fish tins are fun and a different spin and we enjoyed them. Might need to come back and try all the fish options in the future! The escargot was a nice mix up from the traditional dish but man, nothing slaps like that Spanish octopus! While the burger was very tasty, I want to take this opportunity to be pedantic and say it should really be called a patty melt. There, I said it. We saw Foundation Social Eatery at the Alpharetta Farmer's Market a few weeks ago. They had a sign for a gluten free cookie, but when we asked for one, they said they already sold out. But they said they had many other gluten free desserts at their restaurant. My wife made a 6pm reservation for Father's Day. First time eating at this location In Alpharetta. We had a delicious brunch at the other location in Roswell a few years ago, which is now closed. This location doesn't serve brunch, only dinner. There was plenty of parking behind the restaurant. We arrived on time and were promptly seated. The interior is nice. They brought over many design elements from the previous location. I'm normally a beer guy, but decided to order a specialty drink called the Old Dogwood. It was good. My wife doesn't really drink, so she tried a mocktail called the Phony Negroni. She didn't like it. My daughter, who turned 21 earlier this year tasted it and liked it, so she drank it. My son drank water. We didn't order appetizers. We just ordered our entrees. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass special, which tasted good, but I thought it was kind of small for $45 and needed a side of veggies, like asparagus or green beans. My wife ordered the Hokkaido Scallops. She also thought her meal was small. It was just 3 scallops for $41. My son ordered the East Coast Rock Shrimp. He said it had a good taste but he also thought the portion was small. My daughter had the FSE Burger. She thought the fries were really good, but that the burger was oily and she didn't like that it was on sliced bread instead of a bun. We ordered dessert. My son ordered the Pot de Creme, and both my daughter and I ordered the gluten free Opera Cake. This was the only gluten free dessert option on Father's day. My wife and son really liked the Pot de Creme. I liked the Opera Cake (except for the rock salt on top), but my daughter said she really didn't like it, so I ate hers (scraping off the salt). I think the Opera Cake had caffeine in it because I don't drink caffeine and I wasn't able to sleep. After arriving home, both my son and I were still kind of hungry and had cake and ice cream. Overall, I'd say our dinner was just ok, hence 3 out of 5 stars. We paid a lot ($250 with tip) for an ok dinner, which is disappointing. read more

The first thing we noted as we were being sat to our table was that is was pretty noisy - not deafening but fairly substantial. Our server (I believe her name was Aly/Ali?) was phenomenal. She provided us with great recommendations, and as a vegetarian, noted that a lot of the menu can be accommodated for dietary restrictions - bonus points! I ended up going with the Mushroom ravioli which tasted great. It was kind of soupy/had a broth that was very flavourful and while it may not seem like a large portion size for some of the more volume eaters, it was just enough with it being paired with the bread service and a drink from the bar. Speaking of the drink, I ordered an amaretto sour - while it wasn't my favorite, I must give props for the bartenders to make it the right way with egg whites and bourbon/whiskey - most places opt those ingredients out. My girlfriend ordered a non-alcoholic earl grey mocktail, which she said she liked - she wasn't blown away with it but she noted it was refreshing. As for my girlfriend's entree, she ordered the beef braised sugo, which she loved. She said it was flavorful and a large portion (for her). We opted out of dessert as we were pretty full but also didn't feel like passing the $100 dinner threshold for two as the prices are fairly high here. The mains? The grilled hanger steak is a masterclass in execution, and their daily fish special always tastes like someone had a personal conversation with the ocean. The bar? Don't even get me started. Whether you like your cocktails shaken, stirred, or philosophized over, the bartenders here craft drinks like they're composing symphonies. Their Old Fashioned could square up against any craft bar in New York, and the wine list? Someone did their homework....with extra credit. This isn't just my go-to. It's my can't-stay-away. Everything was right. Ambience was upscale but relaxed. Service was polished. Staff knew what they were doing. Food was superb. Chef Mel's training was evident in my Duck Duo. It was as good as any I have eaten in France, and I've had both confit and magret many times. Both at once may have been an indulgence, but I slowly devoured it all. Unfortunately, I didn't have room for dessert. Others in my party had the catch of the day and the hanger steak. All were raved upon. Mel came by the table and chatted about his experience and training in France. He even shared some recommendations for our upcoming trip to Paris. We don't live in the area but visit often. I am drooling as I am writing this review... We came to this restaurant for our anniversary dinner and it was just perfect! From the service to the food to the atmosphere. LOCATION: it is located in downtown Alpharetta. There is a FREE parking spot right behind the restaurant and there was a couple open spots even on a Saturday night. FOOD: wow. There is a reason why this place has such high reviews. Appetizers: octopus (4/5), mushroom ravioli (6/5) and bone marrow (7/5). The octopus has a mild spicy buttery flavor which was absorbed well into the chorizo. The octopus pieces were thick but the crunch/flavor was not as apparent. The mushroom ravioli was different than any ravioli I have had. It was a nice flavor profile with each bite. The ravioli pasta was light and not overbearing. The bone marrow was so tasty! It came with 3 pieces of toast and a nice salad (capers, greens). For our main meals, we got the Veal Ragu (3/5) which was a bit salty for me personally and the duck breast (6/5) which was the show stealer! Crispy perfectly cooked duck meat with some pickled mushroom + artichoke (which there was more vegetables). We were with two other couples who got a hanger steak and the ravioli. The only complaints were that the dishes didn't come with a side item like a starch, a veggie or even a salad- for the price, I think we all expected more. A roasted chicken breast said it came with roasted carrots and onions. Would have been nice on a bed of potatoes or rice. We were celebrating a birthday and made a reservation with no problem. We arrived on time and got seated right away. We first ordered the bread, escargot, and Mushroom Ravioli. The Mushroom Ravioli is made from scratch and tastes out of this world delicious!! Service was pretty fast and efficient. There's also plenty of free parking behind the restaurant. As a main Entree, I ordered the Scallops which came with mushrooms. They were cooked to perfection! Everyone at the table ordered different entrees, as pictured, and loved them. For dessert, we ordered 2 scoops of sorbet - lemon and raspberry and the Apple Streusel. The Apple Streusel was served warm with a scoop of ice cream. Both were delicious! The only reason I had to give 4 out of 5 stars was because if you're going to have an open concept kitchen, all employees should use gloves. Foundation 2.0 is finally here, and just as amazing as we knew it would be... Just an incredible space, and plenty of the "old faces". So great to see Alpharetta's best bartender Britt behind the bar as you walk in... The menu has some of the "greatest hits" from Foundation 1.0, but also a spattering of exciting new options. As always, Chef Mel is just killing it. Making full use of the much larger kitchen, it's always great to watch Chef work.
