I was in the area and looking for dinner just before 9PM and saw that this restaurant was open and nearby. I popped in and was immediately seated in the classy dining room. They have bar, table, and booth seating with an open kitchen view. I ordered the Shrimp & Marsh Hen Mill Grits and the proportion of roux to grits was good. And the roux was filled with big plump shrimp and tasty chunks of tasso and had a tanginess from the tomatoes. I asked if they had any bread to go with the meal and they provided a yeast roll and a corn muffin. Possibly due to staffing levels, service was not good. I could not get a drink refill until the end of meal when I was leaving. And when I requested my check, it took a long time to receive it and another long wait for it be processed. read more

The Nashville bites had good flavor but were nowhere near "Nashville hot." The deviled eggs were also good but not spectacular. The entrees were decent, with their Springer Farms fried chicken being the star of the show. The pieces were crispy and had flavor, but not enough to make it a "must return" or "must share" experience. Our server was friendly, attentive and gave good recommendations. Our group of eight dined here tonight and had such a great experience from start to finish! As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with a beautiful interior. There's a separate bar area with high tops that's perfect for casual drinks or happy hour, and the dining room manages to feel both intimate and modern while still open and spacious. This spot is especially good for groups--the large tables easily accommodate bigger parties, and the service was prompt, attentive, and friendly the entire evening. Splitting a check so many ways can often be a headache, but they handled it with no problem, which we really appreciated. Now for the food--the real standout! Every dish at our table was a hit and not a bite was left behind. The fan favorites were the trout, fried chicken, grilled pork chop, Caesar salad, deviled eggs, and banana pudding. On top of that, they offer a well-rounded cocktail, wine, and beer list, plus a few fun mocktails. Two people in our group tried the strawberry banana margarita mocktail and loved it--it was flavorful, refreshing, and just the right amount of sweet. I ordered the sck smash burger. It was a very simple looking plate burger with nice crispy golden fries on the side. I like the fact that they give me individual mayonnaise and ketchup jars. I totally forgot to take a picture of the burger. I was hungry. But I'm showing you the empty plate. It came with B&B pickles which I'm not a fan of but they were sliced so thin and the cheese had more than enough flavor to disguise the less than dill flavor. Table for 4 for Dinner We had just finished a movie at a nearby theater and took the short walk over to South City Kitchen. We entered through The Hotel at Avalon's lobby, took a left, and stepped into the restaurant. We have been to this hotel and restaurant before, but never during the holiday season. The decorations were everywhere, and the space looked very festive. We approached the podium, but no one was there at first. A minute later, someone who appeared to be a server came over, said hello, and immediately picked up a ringing phone. It sounded like she was taking an order for a hotel guest. We were just standing there for a few minutes while she kept going and kept going with the phone order. Eventually the actual hostess arrived, and once I let her know we had a reservation, she handed us menus and we were led to a booth. Soon after, the person who was taking the phone order, came over and greeted us with a warm smile. She knew the menu inside and out and was very personable. She could tell we were kinda in a hurry and informed us she would try to keep things moving. She brought waters while we looked over the menu, and by the time she came back, we were ready. I ordered a 3 Tavern Prince of Pilsens and Wifey ordered the Creature Comforts Classic City Lager. My youngest went with an Espresso Martini, and my oldest stuck with her water. The girls added deviled eggs as an appetizer. The drinks came out pretty quickly and to continue with the festive atmosphere the deviled eggs were dropped off by another staff member dressed like an elf. For dinner, my oldest built her own entrée by bundling a couple of appetizers together. She ordered the crab cakes and fried green tomatoes. My youngest ordered the Wagyu Beef Cheeks with Parmesan grits and broccolini. Wifey and I decided to share the Cold Smoked Grilled pork chops. While we were waiting for our food we looked up and realized there was a complementary basket of breads already on the table. It was a mixture of small cornbread muffins and biscuits. The cornbread had actual pieces of corn baked in, which added some cool texture to them. The food definitely took longer than expected, and the person who delivered it apologized for the wait, as soon as it arrived. Everything looked great once it hit the table, and everyone enjoyed their meal. We finished with just enough time to head outside for the tree lighting. Inside the bustling Hotel at Avalon is there delicious South City Kitchen. Immediately seated by the front odd the restaurant where there sat only two benches. The view included the patio with a fireplace and nice seating (with blankets). Not too hungry, I ordered the scallops with Brussels. The sauce the scallops sat on was amazing. My mother ordered the scallops with broccolini and red skin potatoes. I would prefer them a tad more buttery and seasoning but in the scallop sauce... just great! We came here after an evening of amazing witchy woman magic. Victoria was our server and she was absolutely incredible. She was on it 100% of the time. We had everything that we needed the entire night. The mood inside the building is slightly dim but romantic and warm and friendly. The food was outstanding. The chicken livers highly recommends, shrimp and grits was quite delicious, the asparagus were a bunch of fat boys, but what really stood out the most was the biscuits and cornbread. Although it is a bit on the pricer side, it's a great place to come every now and again because the food and drinks are so good (keeping in mind I've only been for breakfast/brunch). Reservations: We made a reservation for a Saturday morning at 11:00AM. The restaurant didn't seem too busy at the time, so I don't know that you NEED one per se, but better to have it if you're able to make it. Parking: There is a free parking deck right next to the restaurant. It fills up pretty quickly though. But no worries. There are plenty of feee parking options within the Avalon; you will just have to walk a little to get to the restaurant. There also is valet parking available if you're interested. I didn't use it so not sure about the pricing. Food: So delicious! Each table gets started with biscuits and cornbread, with butter and apple butter. So good! Then we ordered the fried green tomatoes. It comes with goat cheese and a red pepper coulis sauce. Absolutely amazing. I ordered the smoked brisket hash which was delicious; so big and so filling. I could only eat half of it there. My friend got the fried chicken and waffles, which is their signature dish. She loved her meal as well. Drinks: I ordered the Bellini and it was so good! The bar here is conveniently situated in the lobby of the Hotel Avalon. You are likely to see a crowd at almost any time because of the open ambiance and ability to order from the full kitchen menu. It's quite lovely and reminds you of a hotel bar in any cosmopolitan hotel. Top tier decor and selection. Of my 6 or 7 visits here, I've only visited the bar and have had great service each time EXCEPT from the female bartenders. Like I noted, there is almost always a crowd here. However, the male bartenders are still attentive and engaging. Unfortunately, I've had consistently poor engagement from the female bartenders. They've walked right past me several times without acknowledgment. They have been very short with answers to menu questions. They also have walked off to help another guest mid-sentence instead of offering me more time to decide. Today, I had the displeasure of a rude encounter simply because I was asking questions. I typically enjoy being able to linger at the bar for a bit, try a few drinks and/or food options. But I'll only do it from now on if I see particular bartenders are working. The springer fried chicken meal itself was phenomenal with well blending flavors and I loved the homemade hot sauce recipe! Dessert was good but 'different' for banana pudding. There was a crème brûlée type style of creating this dessert which was an acquired taste due to the texture being unusual for a banana pudding (7/10). The place itself was nice, quiet and spacious. Went here for Sunday brunch around 10:45 AM, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to park--there seemed to be plenty of spots available, which is a win for a weekend brunch! The food was fantastic, and the portion sizes were no joke--definitely come hungry. Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and came out fairly quickly despite it getting busier as the morning went on. One of the highlights was the live band playing while we ate. We were seated close to them, but the volume was just right--lively enough to enjoy the music but not so loud that we couldn't hold a conversation. It added a really fun, relaxed vibe to the meal. Booked reservations through OpenTable for 7:30pm. Parking is a nightmare so we paid $15 plus tip to valet through the hotel. We were seated immediately. I had the burrata salad. Delicious and perfect size for a light dinner. (Could have added protein but I didn't). My friend had the fish special which was Grouper, and she said it was delicious. We had a slice of blueberry lemon cake for dessert. It was huge and perfect for sharing- super yummy and flavorful!! Place was crowded so that made service a little slow. Not terrible for a leisurely dinner that most people take, but we were on a time crunch with babysitters at home. Several large crowds of families and friends at surrounding tables, but noise level wasn't bad. You could still hear their background music a little. Bar was very crowded. Overall, a nice experience but the parking situation will definitely cause us to pick other similar settings like Halcyon or the Collection before going back to Avalon. read more

The manger apologized for the experience, which was very nice because we didn't say anything, the server picked up on our disappointment. We decided to visit SCK for brunch yesterday. I ordered the fried chicken plate and bf had the blue crab "quiche". My chicken was excellent, red potatoes were ok but greens had too much garlic. The "quiche" resembled a hockey puck, in size and texture. It looked nothing like the picture on their website ... there were no fluffy eggs, very little crab and it was terribly overcooked. Overall I found it was a great value but I did notice that my coworker's avocado toast may not have been as great of a value for what they got. We waited at least 15 minutes for our table to be ready which was fine... it happens. We started with the fried green tomatoes with goat cheese and red pepper coulis. Fabulous, a perfect blend of tart, tangy and that bit of sweet pepper. A definite favorite. My hubby opted for the Springer MTN fried chicken with mashed red potatoes and replaced the greens with grits. This was served with an au jus that was amazing. Crispy, crunchy and moist chicken! Some of the best we've tasted. Sides were solid as well with the potatoes nudging out the grits. I chose the shrimp and grits. One of my go to orders and this was why we received the gift card. Ample portion, as I took half home. Plump juicy shrimp in a rich roux with Tasso ham gravy. Grits are seasoned nicely. A great location if you are out shopping. I went to South City Kitchen for a girls brunch. I live only a few minutes away, but somehow, I have never been there! We got appetizers to share and had individual entrees. Their fried green tomatoes were definitely the best I have had in a while, and the corn muffins had actual pieces of corn in them! My entree, the avocado toast, was a little mediocre. The fried capers on top were great, but the bread did not have a lot of flavor and started falling apart. That said, it was still an enjoyable brunch, and I left ready to take a fat nap!! read more
