We had been thinking of getting a dog for quite some time. We have particular needs in our home so we needed to get a particular dog. I stalked the website, because they are very good about updating their website every night, looking at dogs I'd want to meet. We headed over to the facility, which is very easy to find and easy to get in and out of. We walked into the dog side (there is also a cat side but both sides share a lobby so it's ok to enter either door if you don't have an animal with you) and signed in on the laptop immediately. I was a bit intimidated but the people working the counter were friendly. They did kind of speak to us like we knew the drill but we aren't needy and figured stuff out ourselves. We visited quite a few times before finding our baby boy. I started to see the place as a sad place because it was one disappointment after another but finally we found our particular pup and couldn't be happier. The adoption process was easy and very informative. I appreciated our first pic with our new baby that they took. I would have forgotten in our excitement. read more

The 2 stars are for the workers. I walked into this place hoping to foster, field trip foster, or maybe even adopt a dog in the near future. First walked in.... Weird looks my way by workers. No hello. No good afternoon. No "How can we be of help"?. NOTHING. I do look normal by the way so not sure why the "stares". Im hoping it is just "ME" and not everyone is treated this way. Toured parts of the facility where the dogs are kept, still no help or guidance. Found my way around alone. I have been to several animal shelters and NEVER have i experienced such a cold UNwelcoming. By the way...: no one was BUSY - i would totally understand and not be griping right now. I am from Hawaii and have opened my home to MANY puppy litters & newborn puppies that needed extra care and bottle feeding. I absolutely adore dogs. I came to this organization in hopes of contributing and helping out in anyway that i could. I've read *all* the prior reviews, both good & bad. Here's the bottom-line: They do the best they can, with the resources they have. Is there room for improvement? HELL YES, but the same can probably be said for you & your place of employment. Do they kill some animals? YES. It's an 'open-admission' shelter, meaning they'll accept any animals surrendered by residents of Henderson, or found stray within Henderson City limits. That means some arrive pretty sick, have major behavioral issues, etc. Lately, the shelter is almost always full, so it's like a full hospital -- it becomes a triage situation. That's the ugly reality that most people are blissfuly unaware of, yet they blame the shelter for if they hear partial-truths about one case. How is NSPCA & other places "No-Kill?" real-easy -- they're selective as to what animals they take-in. Try to surrender an under-socialized dog that's nervous & tries to bite everyone -- NOPE, they won't take it, and instead will send you to a "kill" shelter. Must be nice... The blame goes with society -- it's nice that YOU may be a responsible pet owner, can provide a great home, etc. BUT plenty of people aren't like that. Plenty of people come into the shelter and blatantly lie, so the shelter has to have rules and procedures that may annoy good people, and some people will whine & rant (& throw tantrums, both here & at the shelter!) when the shelter staff try to enforce the laws & policies, which by the way, are set by City Council and/or Henderson Community Development & Services, which is now in-charge of operating the shelter. Some people come-in, wanting a dog that staff know from experience, isn't a good-fit for the person's self-described home & lifestyle. Some know they're not allowed dogs where they live! You have to have a gov't issued ID to adopt, or surrender. No, your bus pass or a photocopy of your CCDC inmate ID doesn't count. You say the animal found stray & at the shelter is yours? Guess-what -- you have to be able to reasonably prove it, because if they just give it to you & then a day later, the actual owner shows-up to claim it, the shelter gets sued. Your cat goes missing & you get a phone call from the shelter, saying they have it? GREAT! But be ready to pay a reasonable boarding charge, and if that cat wasn't licensed or spayed/neutered, you're going to have to pay a fine for breaking Henderson animal ordinances! It's crap like this that *some* of the people here have caused for themselves, yet bad-mouth the shelter-for. Think the adoption fees are "too high," because you can get a puppy for $20 from your neighbor, or get a free one at the Animal Foundation? Go do it then, and good luck. The shelter charges reasonable fees to help fund itself. When you walk-in the shelter, look at the big brass marker on the left of the lobby area, and notice the date -- December 1995. *THAT* is the last time the shelter went though any major expansion. Now think of how much larger the city has grown since then. The shelter is woefully undersized to provide adequate services to the city of Henderson -- specifically not enough kennel space to house all the stray/confiscated/owner-surrendered dogs that come-in on a *daily* basis, plus all the dogs that are up for adoption. City leadership is well-aware of this, but they much prefer to spend $$ on things like new parks, library renovations, etc. instead of what some consider the necessary-evil of an animal shelter, as the need to improve/expand an animal shelter forces a politician to admit that there's a stray/unwanted animal & irresponsible owner problem. They kick the can down the road by spending/wasting $$ on studies & surveys, but even after shelling out a lot of $$ for a shelter survey to be done, failure to act-upon it in a reasonable time means that a newer survey/study needs to be done. I guess that's convenient, when you don't want to actually shell-out the millions of dollars to finally build a modern shelter that would benefit the animals & staff, and everyone could be proud-of. The shelter does have a volunteer program, but the reality is plenty of people who say they're devoted to cats, dogs, and would love to volunteer have NO CLUE of the physical labor & emotions involved. The minority that actually DO start the volunteer process don't bother to finish it, because they don't want to have to follow safety rules & procedures & go through some minor initial hoops. The requirements are straight-forward, and because commitment, dedication and *attention to detail* are necessary, the people who start the process but then disappear part-way through or can't follow the clearly-stated timeframes have their application terminated -- and they whine about it, even though they know they didn't follow the rules. They don't have the decency or integrity to hold themselves responsible for ignoring rules, and then dare to blame the shelter when they don't get their way. read more

We went in to find a second cat and they gave us good advice on what they knew of each kitty there eagerly waiting for a new home. The process was quick to check out and get our new baby girl home. I adopted 2 kittens 9/25/24. One was very lethargic. I took him to the vet. After $748 I was told he might never get better. I had to give him meds daily. They gave him amoxicillin and pain shots Five days later the vet called. She recommended to take her to the shelter. That was Monday 10/7. I had to surrender her back to them. I asked if they could notify me when she was better. That would be 2-3 weeks. So I could adopt her again. Well I just saw they adopted her out. Has only been 6 days. My kids love animals, and while we weren't planning to adopt, we wanted to spend some time playing with them. Unfortunately, the staff informed us that this wouldn't be helpful and would waste their time. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. I also noticed others on Yelp have mentioned the disapproval of the staff not acting kind so I know I'm not the only one who's encountered behavior from them like this. I come to find out he's been found and taken back to the shelter and after they called and I let them know I was going to pick him up the next day because I couldn't that same day because they close so early, the next day, I show up and find out they murdered my fucking dog!! I had seen on TV that the shelter was in need of blankets to be donated so I bought some & hit up some co-workers to donate some too. It had been a couple wks as I was waiting for mine to arrive that I ordered online. I called before I headed over to see if they were still taking them. The lady I spoke to told me that they got a lot after they asked the community for help but that they will always take more. The lady was really nice on the phone. I had asked if I could just come by & drop them off & she told me yes. Place is easy to find & has two separate enterances. One is the cat side & the other is the dog side but it's open inside with separate counters .Both sides had people at the counter so I just stood there looking around at all the stuff in the lobby. Shortly after a women had called out to me asking me how she could help me. I told her I had blankets to donate & she told me to set them on a chair. I also had an open box of cat litter that my friend gave me after having to put her cat to sleep, its not the kind I use & I didn't have the heart to tell her that. They said that it was OK that it was an open, used box. I then asked if I could look @ the animals & she told me I could and told me where they are were. I first went to check out the cats. I was very impressed @ how clean the cat area was. The cages were all cleaned with fresh liter & they had food & water. I was surprised & happy to see that they only had 3 cats. All super cute kitties. One was very friendly rolling around on the bottom of his cage looking @ me. His neighbor above him was this real tiny 1yr old girl who was only 8pds. she didn't know what to make of me but her bio said she's friendly & very talkative once she gets to know you & the poor cat next to her was sooooo scared. She was far back, up on the shelf in her cage & her respiratory rate was fast & she was meowing @ me. I felt so bad for her. I talked to them all, told them things would be OK & moved on out. I'm sure it didn't help me being in there for the scared ones. I then went into the critter room were there were a few rabbits & guinea pigs. I did see one rat in there. This area was clean too. I was very impressed on how clean the shelter was. Owning animals myself I know things can get messy. They had hand sanitizer around the facility & notes telling you not to touch the animals as it can pass germs if you touch one then touch another. If your interested in seeing an animal just et someone know so you can have a 1:1 with them. I then went outside to check out the doggies. There was a guy hosing down the outdoor runs. It was sad to see that there was a good amt of dogs, it seemed that every kennel had a dog in it. I love how they all have a bio telling you about them. There were a lot of strays. A few very vocal ones & some of them just broke my heart the way that they looked at me with their sad eyes. Most of them seemed happy & a couple who seemed sad. There is a grassy area that one of the workers was outside walking one of the dogs on a leash. It seemed that some of the dogs in their kennel got a little jealous but I'm sure they all get a turn too. LOL There was a very talkative rooster & 2 chickens. I think it's awesome that there are shelters for these stray animals & animals that their owners/family give up. While I was in there, there was a young couple @ the counter who brought in their cat to give him away. They told a worker he/she was friendly but was too hyper to take care of. This just broke my heart. If your kid is too hyper are you going to just give them up for adoption too??? I told a friend this & she made a good point that at least they brought the cat to a shelter vs abandoning it on the street, but man it's still sad. That poor cat was probably so scared to be taken away from its home environment to this new nosy environment with a bunch of strangers wondering what he/she did wrong??? So please people don't get an animal if you can't take care of it, can deal with issues they may have vs trying to help them thru it or have to move & choose a place where they don't take animals. Maybe sign up to volunteer at an animal shelter that way you don't have to be responsible for a pet but can still interact & play with one. How the staff treats people who are in need but don't have the financial means is crazy to me. My partner and I were trying to surrender a kitten because it's caused our 2 adults cats to completely stop eating to the point where they're too skinny and don't even act like themselves anymore and Henderson Animal Care and Control is basically saying that unless we pay them money we can't do anything. Even when asked "so since I cannot pay you guys to surrender I'm supposed to just let my current cats die?!?!" I was hit with "Well we need a little bit of something " for a place that's supposed to be humane and safe telling me to let my 2 adult cats wither away because we can't pay you is far from humane. Do not bring found or lost dogs to this shelter. If not claimed they euthanize dogs after 5 days once they are held to be found which is only 3 days. I had a friend bring in a dog she asked what do you do if he doesn't find a home? They said they have 3 day hold for owners to claim the dog. They will find him a home, they euthanized him less than 2 weeks of being there. I have someone else who had called them because they had found a shepherd and the gentleman said if they don't find a home within five days, they are euthanized. This place has no compassion nor do they work with rescues to save lives. Disgrace! read more

I wish I could rate the facilities and the staff in two separate reviews. The staff would get 5 stars and the facilities 1 star! Moving here from the Mid-west 5 years ago, I could hardly believe that the environment for the dogs (don't know about the cats) is OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT! That means that all dog care is done outside in the heat instead of an air-conditioned environment. It also means that all prospective dog adoptees must conduct their business outside in the heat. I thought about volunteering, but I would never clean cages and care for animals outside most times of the year here in Henderson. I noticed that the outside environment also enhances the bad smell and the flies - making the experience very unappealing. Again, I am not talking about the staff or their care. The outdatedness of these facilities is beyond their control! They do great with what they have to work with, but these 1960 style pens give a dark, foreboding atmosphere! Frankly, the condition of this facility is an embarrassment to the City of Henderson. How did such a concerned, progressive city neglect this worthy cause? Maybe some dog lovers need to get Council seats and turn this around. I will volunteer to go through the City's financial books and make enough cuts to provide sufficient funding for this facility. Got my two sweet adopted cats from here. The front desk staff and caretakers were great throughout the whole process. We went back to where the cats were (the place is split between the dogs and cats) which they called the "Cattery" and met the cats there. They seemed well take care of, and we were able to meet the cats in the "cat meeting room" which had some cardboard scratchers and shelves for them to climb and run on. The caretaker that was bringing the cats back to the meeting room for us to meet them was so helpful- she even gave us advice on adopting two cats at once and how to slowly get them acquainted with each other and how to get them used to the house- as new cat owners, the advice was extremely helpful for us. Including paper work, the process of adopting them didn't take long, maybe an hour. The shelter also provided top loading cardboard carriers to bring them home in, which proved useful for their first trip to the vet, since they were NOT having it with the front load carriers... Cats were both spayed, chipped, and had their vaccinations. Happy to give them a forever home, and thankful for the shelter for finding them and having taken good care of them. read more

This is like the worse thing anyone could ever do because many of those pets will likely end up in a pound. So if you're reading this because you're looking for a "gift" please make sure these pets are going to their forever home. Its heartbreaking to see an animal be turned away because of us humans. This location has many dogs , cats , rabbits, chickens , etc looking for their forever home. Some of these pets were adopted at one point and then returned because it didnt quite fit the peoples lifestyle. Again!!! Dont adopt a pet unless you are in it for the long haul. I mean would you adopt a human child and then return them if they didnt meet your expectations? Pets are like children. If you see them any different. Then a pet is definitely not for you. Anyway. If you adopted a cat named Steel A1295847 from the Henderson Animal Shelter on 07/12/2024, please know if you ever cannot care for him that there is a family who is waiting to take over the care. I left my name and phone number at the center when I brought him in to adopt if they could not find the owner. I had to leave town for a family emergency but called when they said he could be adopted and told them I was returning on July 16, 20024. They said they could not hold the cat. I fed him over the course of 10 days and my son and family slowly gained his trust and began to love this little guy. My son was devastated when we could not get back in time to adopt him. I am literally heartbroken, so many other cats that have been there even longer that could have been adopted out, but the one we tried to do the right thing by and see if there was an owner instead of just keeping him, is the cat who is adopted in a day oddly when so many other cats are there for months. The woman on the phone said yes he was so sweet but we have other cats , I explained we didn't love any cat we loved that cat. I asked them to give my name and number to the people who adopted him in case the ever could not care for Steel and the woman said no. I am sure they were very good with Steel but not so kind to me. I even offered to pay for it if they could hold him a few days until I could return, even changed my flight earlier to return home. We are literally heartbroken. People told me just keep him but this did not seem right, I said we should see first if there is an owner and then we can adopt him but now what I said is just a lie to my family. read more

I reached out to see about volunteering but due to a family emergency i was out of state for a few months and didn't get the application requirements done in time. When i emailed back to see about getting started again this is the response i got. This made me so, so sad. I'm beyond shocked this is an email that someone in this line of work would ever send. If this is the man in charge of coordinating volunteers for these poor dogs they need more help than ever. 90% of the bad reviews on this shelter are about the staff being rude. Rude lady at front desk. I adopted a dog here and was told I can bring the pet back if it doesn't work out. Unfortunately it didn't work out. He wasn't getting along with another dog I adopted elsewhere & my other two dogs as I wanted multiple dogs in our family. I felt like the dog I adopted here was meant to be a SOLO dog and of course I brought him back because I wanted to make sure he finds the right family. She then tells me that I should've acclimated the dogs first and I just had the dogs best interest of finding a right home. I figured the sooner I bring him in the better. Other adoption shelters recommend a meet and greet at home for most successful introductions to see how the dogs get along in a neutral environment. She also threatened that I won't be able to adopt here again. Excuse me, how does that make me a bad pet mom. I wanted to make sure he finds the right home and I was told off by front desk. My husband then found a dog that fits well with our family and dog but he was denied because of ME. This dog was going to be adopted and loved but was denied that. How does that make me a bad person? To bring back a dog I previously adopted because I wanted to find him a home that'll be a better fit for him! BTW he was adopted and I'm HAPPY for him. Now my daughter is upset that we don't have another doggie sibling. I wouldn't want to have anyone else to experience this. read more

I had a freak accident at the end of March 2024. I basically fell and tore all the tendons in both my knees. I could not lift my legs or walk. I was taken to the hospital and admitted. I had only been in Henderson for about 2-weeks and did not know anyone. I needed extensive surgery on both my knees. However, I refused to have surgery until I found someone/some place to care for my 2 Mastiffs. One of my dogs (9-month-old female/100lbs) had been locked in a cage in the living room and the other (2-year-old male/140 lbs) roaming freely in my bedroom with the door closed...Both without access to food or water for 2 days. This is because I did not think I would be hospitalized, and strangers took me to the hospital. Therefore, I had to crawl and put my dogs up. A late-night shift nurse offered to contact someone she knew at the Henderson Animal Care and Control Facility, after hearing my story. I agreed. The next morning Officer Gina came to the hospital. She explained the process, I signed a document giving permission and gave her access to my house. Although it took 4 Animal Control Officers to remove my dogs, get them in a truck, and place them in the Henderson Animal Care and Control Facility, no one was injured, and neither were my dogs. The Director, Danielle Harney, allowed my dogs to be housed, feed, and cared for there for over a month. They did not mind me consistently calling to check up on dogs. They also told me not to worry about payment while I was recovering. Eight months later, I began walking with cane and went to say thanks in person to Danielle and Gina, as well as to pay my bill. I wasn't charged due to it being an accidental emergency. However, I learned that the funding is lacking in comparison to the number of animals that are taken in. Therefore, I made a substantial donation. My experience showed me that this team really love animals and do all they can to take care of them. I urge everyone that can, to please make a donation of money, time, food, blankets, animal toys, or whatever you can to help support the work that these exceptional animal care staff deliver. They were a blessing to me and my dogs. They are certainly heroes without capes! read more

Long story short is my wife and I adopted a dog and brought him home with us. Everything was fine except for the fact that the adopted dog would always be aggressive and sometimes try to attack our two other dogs even when they weren't doing anything at all to him. We just thought we give it a few days and maybe he'll start coming around but sadly it kept happening so we then decided maybe we should bring him back to the shelter so we did. One of the employees there who I assume is an adoption counselor was extremely rude and kept trying to tell us how we have to acclimate the dog and how she would make sure now that we can't ever adopt their again. Basically just trying to shame us and make us feel bad even though we did try and it did not work out the way we was hoping for. Btw one of the adoption counselors we spoke with before adopting told us if it doesn't work out if we are more than welcome to bring him back to that exact place and it would be fine. We really wanted to give this shelter a try despite all the negative comments but sadly I don't think we'll be returning there. read more

This is a smaller no kill animal shelter located in Henderson east of boulder hwy. I've been here a handful of times over the years either to drop off old towels and sheets as donations, or to drop off an animal we rescued, etc. There's a dog entrance and a cat entrance, and the inside lobby area is pretty small. They do have some merchandise in that area as well. The staff has always been nice and helpful. We usually see a volunteer or two walking dogs and helping out on the grounds, too. On this visit we had a dog crate to donate, as well as some pillows, cushions, & sheets. The girl at the front thanked me warmly and then my daughter and I strolled thru the dog area to check them out and say hello. The dog section is outdoors, where they have large kennels. The kennels were clean. There were not that many dogs, probably about 5-6 large dogs (mostly pittbulls), a shepherd, and a handsome sweet short haired retriever of some sort. There were 2 small dogs. Hopefully those sweet babies all get loving forever homes! There was a family at the front desk adopting a cute jack russel terrier, and they had their other dog with them as well. The new dog seemed to be fitting in with his new family well, as his tail was wagging nonstop. The little boy with the family was all smiles. This warms my heart! I have adopted 2 beautiful little dogs from this place 2 yrs ago . They were adopted 8 months apart and they love each other as if they were born together . I recommend this facility because it's a No Kill Shelter and that means a lot to me . Animals aren't just pets , they're family and the animals here are treated with love by the staff . read more

The shelter willingly gave us a sick immaceated dog! We couldn't do a meet and greet because he was a 9 month old puppy. Had him less than 24 hours and he vomited at least 12 times, had diarrhea and was very fearful of my husband! The staff acted angry with us because we surrendered him back! The dog shouldn't have been ready for adoption and the shelter should have known he was sick! We learned a valuable lesson. read more

Over the last year, the number of occupants in our house decreased from five to three. Which was a change for my daughter leaving her wanting to fill the void with a pet. After having the "take responsibility for your pet talk," the next step was to head over to the Henderson Animal Care and Control Center, who finds homes for 100-200 animals per month, to see what was available in person. But you can always check online on PetHarbor to see who is there. Be also on the lookout for adoption weekends when the shelter works with Petsmart to find new homes for our friends. Our original plan was to get a dog, but with over half of the dogs being pits around a year old, and with my wife being deathly scared of dogs, the unpredictability factor was too high so we headed over to the other side of the building to look at the cats in their indoor, air conditioned kennels. Before we even got to look at any of the kittens, my daughter found her match in a one year old. The employee was helpful, giving us a little background and my daughter was allowed to visit with Bruno for about 15 minutes in a separate room. After exactly three days of letting things marinate, we returned and came back home with a new adopted pet. The process was pretty easy with only having to fill out an adoption form, a form for chip registration, and paying the $80 adoption fee. To avoid a $5 charge to use one of their boxes to transfer your pet, make sure you bring your own carrier. Your new family member, for that very cheap $80 adoption fee, will come with the aforementioned registered chip, routine vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery if not already done, and Henderson registration. The adoption fee for dogs is $90. The center has turtles and rabbits for adoption also. This was the actually the third time I've had interaction with animal control and found them to be thorough and reliable in the previous two situations. The first incident was when my wife was bitten by a neighbor's dog during a walk through the neighborhood. The second was at my work when I had to report some jackass who left his dog in the car while he went to an appointment and the temperature was 95° outside. With both incidents, officers arrived in timely manners and they followed through with everything ensuring all involved parties were accounted for and safe. In the animal control center, the employees up front were less cordial and helpful than the employees in the back with the animals. In the back, they all seemed to know the story of each animal and were able to answer any questions we had about them. It turns out when they went to neuter Bruno before we adopted, they discovered that he was a she, but they still kept the name Bruno. My daughter renamed her Fiona, but we still kept the male name as her middle name. So she has a wacked out name now, but it kind of fits her personality. We've had her for three whole days and she has brought nothing but joy to us and she'll get more love than ever compared to sitting in a kennel by herself. I'm not sure if maybe it was an off day for the receptionist but geez totally rude and seemed like they could care less about our questions or anything. My husband and I went in all excited to go look at a pup and left really disappointed. we wanted to get her but didn't know the paperwork we needed to bring and just the way she told us and looked at us was as if we were dumb and shouldn't have come there without it. We recently had a coyote attack our beautiful Himalayan cat, Starla*. My husband rushed her to HAC & they had to EUTHANIZE her...he was heartbroken...I went a few days later to check and see if they cremate the bodies and I spoke with an employee there named JENNIFER. SHE IS THE MOST COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEING I HAVE EVER MET. Not only did she comfort me about our loss, but just watching her interaction with the animals that come in frightened just completely blew my mind. She would kneel down to their level and speak soothingly to them....I JUST LOVE HER!!! Most places are desensitized and just rushed. We need more "Jennifers" in the world.
