Came with the hubby on a Saturday evening around 5 pm. Another GREAT experience! We had the same waitress as my first visit with my friends. She is very friendly and attentive. I had the same soup as last time (Phnom Penh Egg Noodle) because it was SO good and we tried two dishes different from my last visit: pork pad thai and chinese broccoli and chicken with white rice (forgot to ask for fried rice instead). The pad thai was delicious with the right amount of sweetness. Pork and chicken were both very tender. Best of all, the dishes are not dripping with grease/oil and the tab is always so affordable: $29 including tip with leftover soup for tomorrow! Definitely a hidden gem! We'll be back! read more

This place is hit or miss. The first time I tried this place, we dined in. The service wasn't great, but my expectations for this type of place was pretty low to begin with. We got the mee ka thung and I thought it was pretty good. This week, we ordered takeout and they were super rude on the phone. I placed my order and they immediately hung up on me. I almost called back to make sure they even got my order in but decided to let it go. We picked up our food and everything was disappointing. The "special" fried rice was not special, it was bland and dry. The mee ka thung has no sauce or flavor on it. The lort cha was only saved by the fish sauce that comes with it. I don't think I'll be trying this place anymore after this last experience. read more

While in Lowell, I discovered the city is home to a sizable Cambodian community. Kudos to Lowell for welcoming so many over the past 150+ years (Irish, Greeks, Canadians, Portugese, Camodian, etc., etc.) I've never had Cambodian, so we thought we'd give it a try. We arrived in a group... 4 adults and 6 teenage girl hockey players. It was an adventure... and a fun one at that. The food was excellent. The staff was very helpful in recommending things the group might like. All were excellent recommendations. We had a big lazy susan on the top of the round table... it kept turning and turning as people wanted to sample everything. The most adventurous eater, the most sophisticated palette, the most picky teenage girl... all loved it. I have to admit, the place does not look like much from the outside. Also, I must confess I was a little nervous walking in. But, it turned out great and my friends think I am some kind of local knowledge super-wizard. First time having Cambodian food and this place was a great start. Not sure what to except as the menu descriptions aren't really the best. Our waiter wasn't fluent in English and between the coconut soup, and fish sour soup, he mentioned the sour soup was what he would recommend. This is also a family-owned restaurant so don't expect top notch service. Just wave them down if you need something. Things to note, their soup dishes are served in huge family style portions and you need to order rice to eat with the soup. I discovered it was a lemongrass soup I was eating and I was pleasantly surprised! The soup was incredibly flavorful, full of huge amounts of fish and veggies. This is enough for 1 person with leftovers or two people. I would definitely come back to this place when I'm in the area to try their rice dishes and other soups! For those of you looking for Authentic Southeast Asian cuisine in Lowell, I'm letting you in on this hidden gem... you're welcome. Prices are comparable with long-standing Cambodian restaurants in town (inexpensive). And taste? Trust me, there's no way this relatively new restaurant could survive the competition Lowell offers. Asian food here is the best!! Besides, we locals love to discredit authenticity, so catering to mainstream via laying low on the fish sauce is shunned! Don't worry, this restaurant is new construction so the atmosphere is less "hole in the wall" and a great place to impress out-of-towners with your (now) cultured palette. I always get the Special Noodle Soup (hangover food). It's the Cambodian version of the Vietnamese pho with a mix of beef and seafood as its protein. Mi-ka-tang (m/s?) is the bomb here, too. It's a stir-fried wide noodle dish. Loc Lac is a great intro dish, if you've never had Cambodian food. It's cubed steak with white rice and comes with a cup of broth to help wash it down. As for drinks the Coconut Juice is traditional with real coconut flesh. I always get the sparkling limeade (not called that on the menu), because again, I'm usually hungover when I'm there. Disclaimer...I don't take pics of my food cause that's weird. I think I take for granted that this gem is within walking distance from my house. Hands down this is the most consistent and most authentic Khmer food in Lowell. Their Katiev noodle soup is consistently amazing along with all of the other dishes I have tried, including their Cha Grueng, Somla (all styles), and fried snacks (wings, calamari etc). I have been to this place at least 100 times and continue to make it my #1 Lowell based Khmer spot. FYI it's closed on Wednesdays, and parking can be tight, so be sure to car pool. We wish that they were open later and don't understand why they would be open so early in the morning. It may be best to aim for lunch rather than dinner. Food: TASTY and FRESH! Portion sizes are perfect! Prices to match. I've ordered many things off the menu including the noodle soups, mee ka thing(flat rice noodles), curry soups, hot pot, bbq pork and rice, or lemongrass chicken. I have never had an issue with the food. Good authentic Cambodian food that is hot and fresh! What's different about their bbq pork is that it's not off the bone so you're getting more for your money and not paying for a chunk of bone(my boyfriend will not order bbq pork anywhere else except Heng Lay). Location: Parking is a little less than average. Maybe it can fit 4 or 5 cars in the back but I'm not even sure if it's for residential. I don't think a lot of customers have tried this place because of it's awkward location so is a little underrated. Service: Their service isn't spectacular. It's ehhh....OK. But same goes for the majority of asian restaurants around the area. Don't expect them to ask how you're doing or clear your table before giving you the check. This is a casual place with some pretty tasty food. Per the recommendations for an introduction to Cambodian food, I had the Lok Lak Beef with Rice. I didn't really like the descriptions of "fried beef" but it turned out to be good. The cucumbers, lettuce, and tomatoes go well with the lok lak. The dish also came with a bowl of broth (mine came complete with a huge pork bone in it, which was fun to pick the meat off of). The broth was what I call "taste city", that is, had tons of flavor. I wonder if it had MSG. Regardless, the warm, super-flavorful broth was a good accompaniment to the lok lak beef. A nice pot of tea will also appear on your table free of charge. The restaurant itself is well kept, clean, with nice tables. I noticed that most of the clientele spoke both English as well as (what I assume to be) Cambodian with the restaurant staff. I take this to be a sign of authenticity. I look forward to trying their meekathung next time. Update: I went again the following weekend and ordered the meekathung with seafood. It was really good! It's listed as "special chow foon" in English. You can get it with beef, chicken, seafood, or shrimp. The seafood consists of shrimp, squid, imitation crab, and fish cake. There's also the ubiquitous chinese broccoli that was nicely cut up and tender. A sign of a place that does this dish well is enough "char" on the noodles, and they had this. And all of it was in a nice savory gravy. Very good. Wish I can go again. read more

My aunt and cousins brought my fam here a few months ago and this Khmer restaurant is one of the cleaner ones that I've ate at in Lowell. The family that works here is extremely nice and friendly and they weren't pushy at all. Just like another yelp reviewer said, the vibe you get from Heng Lay is like you're eating at a relative's house since it is a small place. I think I ordered the Mee Kathang the first time and the crispy egg noodles (not sure if it's called that but I forget the name of it) the second time I've ate here. Wonderful family- owned Cambodian restaurant! All soups we've tried (Tom- Yum, sweet and sour pork rib) were delicious. We've also tried a few of the chicken dishes which were fabulous- they mix their own curry paste here. We look forward to coming again after an afternoon at the MRT and trying many other unique and well- prepared dishes. I came here a few times before and the food is always good BUT I won't be coming back for awhile! When we first walked into the restaurant, the waitress was wearing a mask when she told us where to sit. Later, she came by to take our order and I was super annoyed that she wasn't wearing her mask properly, it was under her nose. I wanted to walk out right then but decided not to be rude since I was with other people. And when she came by again to give us our food, her mask was under her chin. Like why is she even bother wearing a mask if she can't even wear it properly. I'm really disgusted by this, Covid is serious and it's even worst when the person serving your food isn't wearing her mask properly. Pretty good Cambodian food, I ordered the beef lok lak (shaken beef) and I enjoyed it. It comes with a ton of white rice (though I wish I asked if I could order it with fried rice with the Chinese sausage). The tea is great and the service is fast. Went to visit my mother in law who lives in Lowell so we wanted to try out Cambodian food. We chose this place based on the reviews. Walked in and noticed everyone was Asian which to me is a good sign the food is authentic and not Americanized. My mother in law can't eat spicy food so we stuck to basic dishes - pad thai, fried rice, beef with ginger and papaya salad which is one of my favorite SE Asian dishes. The salad had tons of fish sauce which was very tasty but strong. The other dishes were delicious as well. With food, drinks and tip was only about $40 which is very inexpensive considering we had tons of leftover. Definitely worth another trip back read more

I'm in love with Heng Lay Restaurant. It's small and family owned, the service is fast and friendly, and everything is made to order. I've never had anything less than awesome. All of the soups are amazing, and the Pad Thai is to die for. I ordered the "Chicken with Spicy" last night, but instead of chicken I asked or Tofu. It was wonderful... perfectly cooked Tofu and veggies in a fantastic ginger/curry sauce. The spring rolls are a must-have as well. It's BYOB so bring your favorite wine or beer and your appetite.
