I have always held a hight opinion of Hennen's but I am disappointed after my last experience. I called in to make reservations and spoke with a very nice gentleman whom confirmed my reservation by repeating back to me what I had asked for. Upon arriving I was running about three minutes late due to traffic, so I let my daughter out while I parked, so she could confirm our arrival. She almost immediately called me and said that the reservation I had made was for the same time but the following day. Not what I asked for and NOT what was repeated to me. As it is the holiday season, I was nervous at this point about getting a table and hurried inside to see what could be done. The gentleman that I spoke with on the phone immediately agreed that he had made the mistake and assured me that we would be worked in. Great! Within moments we were seated...in an almost empty restaurant. The entire meal, it remained this way. Why in the world did the gentleman even say anything?? It caused me and my party unnecessary stress, and really made the front of the house look very unorganized. Our server wasn't much better. She was a sweet girl, but not very attentive. We had to ask for refits and she offered bread and it took 15min for her to bring it to the table. I had salmon over risotto and when ordering she asked if medium temperature was ok for the fish. I told her that was perfect and was excited that she asked, assuming that it would be cooked perfectly. It wasn't. It was very much well done. I picked at my plate and waited for her to come ask how everything was...she never did. She eventually came back to our table to ask if I wanted to box my almost untouched fish, and I told her no and before I could say anything else, she picked up my plate and walked away... that was that. The server was very professional and knowledgeable. We ordered cocktails, a wedge salad and two of their most popular entrees. The cocktails and bread service came out perfect... followed by the wedge and entrees within 30 seconds. There was no sense of timing and made us think that everything was prepared far in advance. This wasn't the first or last time we will be eating at Hennen's restaurant and for all the times I have eaten here, this was one of the most exceptional times. Our sever Heidi was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and specials, even though we came with intentions of ordering one thing she was able to describe and make specials and the soup of the day sound so desirable that we ordered everything she suggested and was beyond the word pleased with our experience. She was very attentive and answered any questions we had. As for dinner we had the Red snapper and duck breast and both were spot on, along with the crab soup that we loved. Was sitting for a long time without service when I finally flagged a passing hostess and eventually a server came by. I got the salmon sandwich (lunch menu) with fries. The little strip of salmon was comically small against the bun. I had to cut it into small pieces just to cover the surface, which I regretted because each bite was more bun than fish. The French fries were like fast food fries, nothing special and a small portion to boot. On a quick stop for lunch on a weekday, I ordered a Caesar salad and a 7 ounce filet mignon with sides of mushrooms and spinach. The food was prepared perfectly and the service was excellent, though the restaurant was not busy when I was there. Additionally, I really enjoyed the ambience with its upscale and warm feel. On top of all that, it's located right next to many focal points of interest in downtown Chattanooga, including the Tennessee Aquarium. Highly recommend. read more

Came here on Monday afternoon after a great visit at the Tennessee aquarium as it was very close by and we wanted to eat somewhere before flying back home to California. Started out with the calamari appetizer and it was hands down the best calamari I'd ever had. The meat was tender and not at all chewy like some calamari tends to be. For my entree I had the sliced sirloin. It was cooked to perfection and the steak was almost melt in your mouth. Absolutely delicious! The potatoes and asparagus that accompanied the steak were also fantastic. I wasn't a huge fan of the bordelaise sauce that came on top of the steak but it wasn't bad and it was my first time trying it so I'm sure it will grow on me. For dessert I had the creme brulee. Again, some of the best I've ever had. The caramelized top was crunchy but not burnt and the pudding was decadent and rich. Overall a very wonderful experience and a great way to send us back home! By far our best dining experience in Chattanooga! We had 6:30 reservations and arrived just after 6. We were offered the option of a drink in the bar or being seated immediately. We opted to be seated early and were fortunate to get Christy as our server. She was effervescent and clearly both loved the items on the menu and working at Hennen's...which I appreciate more and more as I come across surly servers. Christy was very pleasant and did not rush us through our meal, when one course ended she asked if we were ready for the next, which I appreciate because I am a slow eater and like to space the courses a bit and often feel rushed by other servers. The food itself was spectacular. Creative without being over the top. My husband, who has never met a potato dish he did not love, opted for their vegetable of the day which was a medley of grilled onion, squash and zucchini. He had been talking all day about how much he was looking forward to a NY Strip and yet he dove into the side dish first and pronounced them better than any potato. High praise, I assure you! He requested his strip be done medium rare and this particular steak should be used as the guide for all other chefs to follow when wondering what medium rare is. Perfectly seared exterior with an amazingly well seasoned crust and the most juicy, moist hot pink center! My husband is not one to emit 'yummy sounds' as he eats...but a few did escape as he enjoyed this meal! We had started with soup (French onion for him) and calamari. The soup had a most delightful and substantial broth with a wonderfully melted cascade of cheese atop a raft of croutons on the surface. The crock in which it was served was a great size to share. The calamari was like none I've had in the past. The tubes are cut and fried. No tentacles or rings. The sweet chili sauce served with it is delightful! I would have liked a tad more acid in the sauce, but it was quite nice. On my next trip I will be asking for lemon to stir in the sauce. My entrée was the grilled scallops which came with grilled corn off the cob, a medley of greens and gently sautéed yellow peppers. The 4 scallops were large sweet and tender with a most delightful crust on one side and perfectly silky on the other. Generally we eschew dessert, but the one dish we find ourselves indulging in is our beloved crème brulee. I almost feel that dish needs a review of it's very own! First the size is ideal for sharing. Second the custard is rich without being heavy. Silky without being too loose. The caramelized sugar crust was still warm when it was served and the interior was chilled through. It was an absolute delight and I had to be mindful to stop at three bites...but I most certainly could have enjoyed far more of it! My husband opted to enjoy his with a post dinner coffee and said the Greyfriars blend served was both fresh and delicious. There is validated parking in the deck you can enter off Aquarium Way--which we did not know and used the open lot across from the entry on Chestnut. Let me start by saying, I would give this restaurant 6 stars if I could. It is right in the heart of downtown, across from the aquarium. (And walking distance to some bars for post-dinner action if you are like me and into that sort of thing.) There was garage parking attached to the building so that was no fuss at all. The atmosphere is casual but still classic and sophisticated at the same time. The hostess and waitresses were incredibly knowledgeable, patient, friendly, and just FANTASTIC. It was not the kind of place where you felt rushed. You really felt like they want you to take your time, enjoy your meal and enjoy your experience. I went there with a party of 8. We all had the best time, sipping cocktails (which were delicious), chatting, and just enjoying ourselves. The food was PERFECTION. Everything we ordered was cooked exactly as it should be. The presentation was flawless. I took pictures of everything. I was "that girl". Some of the touches on the dishes are unexpected and delightful. The steaks were excellent. I went the specials route and you could just tell the chef was loving what he was cooking. You can taste it in the food. I enjoyed Chattanooga and intend on coming back for a weekend down the road. But if not, I would make the two hour trip from Atlanta solely for this dinner. (I hear they have a good lunch menu too, but I did not have the fortune of trying it.) Really enjoyed dinner here. Almost everything was great. I had the scallops and they were awesome. The hubs had the salmon and it was equally tasty. Friends had scallops and steak and loved it. We had calamari and shrimp for appetizers. The calamari was good but I did not like the shrimp. It was not what I expected when I read the description on the menu and honestly, it just tasted like fried shrimp that you can get anywhere. Would not recommend. Definitely need a reservation if you can! Hard to get a table outside though, even if you have a reservation. It seems like people get out there and do not leave. We hit Hennen's for Southen Brewers Festival halftime dinner. A party of four, we did the mussels, salmon, Ahi and scallops. The quality was excellent across the board. The mussels are one of my all-time favorites. Service was perfect. The ambience is very clean, upscale and modern. The wine list is not huge but well developed and has many interesting varietals. In regards to some steak-centered reviews, Hennen's is not a high end steak house in Chicago. But, it is the best $20 steak you will eat in Chattanooga. Chef Jay has truly mastered the art of cooking diver scallops, brilliant!!! The star of the show however, was the risotto, smoked ham and jalapeño to die for. Perfectly spicy but somehow perfect. For transparency, I waited tables at Hennen's for almost four years. However, I went regularly before I worked there, and it's back on the circuit now that I've moved on. Pros: - Best steaks downtown, better than some much more expensive "steakhouses". - Comfortable, upscale atmosphere with plenty of nice booths, not stuffy at all. - Great consistency from the kitchen. - Beautiful bar area. - Validated parking in the garage upstairs - great on a typical crowded weekend downtown, when parking is a mess. - Awesome lunch, great value (not open for lunch on weekends). I enjoy Hennens. Had a party of six this week. I ordered a Cesar salad and the scallops. Salad is good and when a restaurant actually has real anchovies instead of the "it's in the dressing" crap. I will admit, when the scallop dish came the table (all with steaks) told me to "enjoy your appetizer" I thought the same :-( . Wowzer! Was I surprised. This tiny dish was so rich, so good, I was actually full after finishing. Hmmm! A healthy fish dish creamed in fat! Can't get much better than that. Wine? You will find that Hennens probably has the best wine list in Chattanooga so if you want it they probably have it. My only star deduction is the set up. Not enough tables. Booths are great but cuddling tight with 5 other men to eat is not my definition of a comfort night. Hennens is the Chattanooga spot! It's good, it's well ran, and it will book quickly so reserve well in advance, One last request to improve Hennens. Hennen's is at best 3 stars, I give it a 2 for our first and what will be our only visit. A 5:15 reservation for four should not be a problem with table selection when the restaurant was half empty. We requested a quiet table away from traffic, but we were given only 2 choices right on the main entry isle, busy and noisy. With the noise and fast menu explanations we had to repeatedly have the server slow down and speak louder. This is supposed to be an upscale steak house, however the Delmonico Ribeye I ordered medium-rare came medium-well and edges dry, my other guests prime rib were not flavorful and those ordered crusted had too much horseradish topping that no one liked and was scrapped off. The loaded baked potatoes were over cooked and dry, skins too tough to cut and eat if desired. I should have sent everything back, but my guests did not want to make a fuss and we're hungry. Wow! OK the food here is very good. The service here is pretty snooty. The attitude in general is extremely pretentious. We spent a day out doing a lot of walking downtown, both of us were wearing jean shorts and tennis shoes. The attitude by the servers was that we were too poor too be in their establishment. Haven't heard a single complaint out of the bunch, though those that have tried the pastas seemed to not be quite as enthused as those of us that had steaks or seafood/fish. I guess that's why I didn't give it a 5. I liked the atmosphere... a little more upscale than the typical restaurants in downtown Chattanooga.
