There are not a lot of Latin America-New Orleans fusion restaurtants, but if they were all like State of Confusion there should be. It is super welcoming with free parking and an eclectic decor. Vien was our waiter and he was amazing! He helped us with the menu, had some great suggestions and was entertaining and attentive throughout. He made our meal! We started with the House-Made Potato Chip Nachos, and they were fantastic--loaded with flavor and a great way to kick things off. We all agreed they were much better than regular tortilla nachos. For my entrée, I went with the Muffaletta, and it did not disappoint. The bread was perfectly crisp, the sandwich was packed with flavor, and the side of wood-fired vegetables gave it a really nice twist. She had the Shrimp and Crab Po'Boy special, which she absolutely loved, especially paired with the Confusion Potatoes. Those potatoes were definitely worth mentioning on their own. Our tablemates had the Shrimp Po'Boy and Parilla Steak and Shrimp and both loved their meal. And then came dessert: Beignets. Light, warm, and dusted just right, they brought back memories of the French Quarter in New Orleans. A pretty great way to finish the meal. we are visiting the area and decided to eat dinner here because it was the only restaurant open late (wednesday night) whereas everywhere else closed at 9pm. very happy with this decision since it wasn't pre-planned. absolutely loved the drinks. bf said the confused old fashioned was the absolute best old fashioned he'd ever had. the hibiscus mule that i had was so yum, it was light and floral. a nice treat. i was craving steak and potatoes so i ordered the skirt steak with chimichurri and oh my gosh was this meal so delicious. the flavor of the chimi was truly so good and the skirt steak was tender. oddly enough my favorite part was the head of roasted garlic served with it, i squeezed out all that roasted garlicky goodness and ate it with the fries, such an amazing combo that im probably going to adopt at home. bf ordered the butchers steak and it was pure butter...so flavorful, so tender, so so yummy. i liked the confusion potatoes a lot, the sauce it came with was just a basic mayo based sauce. still great tasting altogether. lastly, we ordered the ceviche sampler as an app. we watch a lot of cooking shows and wanted to finally try ceviche and see what it's all about. the peruvian ceviche was absolutely devine, the flavor, herbs, citrus all together made it a flavor bomb and the plantain chips were the perfect addition. my second fav was the mexican ceviche. i did not give 5 stars because i didn't like the other two ceviches. the flavors weren't as good and it didn't really have that fresh seafood taste. the vibe of the restaurant overall was awesome. you have a nice dining experience on one side, a full bar on the other, and the outside area for a more casual vibe. i would've loved to stay and enjoy a few more drinks outside but we weren't able to this night. our server was friendly and we got a table right away, there wasn't a wait at 830pm on a weeknight. read more

I grabbed a reservation here the day of for 7pm and only had to wait a short time when we arrived early. A lot of the seating here is outdoors, which I liked and there is also a large indoor bar area. Parking was tough as this is in the entertainment district and it was a Friday night. We were seated at an outdoor low table as they had high tops as well. Our server was with us quickly, but then disappeared for awhile. She was good at suggestions and knew the menu. We got the Mexican Ceviche to start as it had shrimp. It took a long time to come out, but was so good and worth the wait. The cojita cheese was unique and went well with the dish. We also didn't have enough chips, but htey brought us more free of charge to polish off the rest of the ceviche with. For my entree, I got the Parilla steak and shrimp and it was a large portion. The sauce was amazing and the potato crisps were a nice touch. Came here on a recommendation of friends and wow it was FANTASTIC! The outdoor seating looks amazing in cooler weather but we chose inside due to heat. Fairly busy but seated right away, brought water instantly and quickly took our drink order. Modelo (served with lime like it should be but is not always) and TROPICALIA IPA which was delicious. Their glasses are etched nicely but they come with drink coozies. I wanted to buy and at end of lunch waitress said we could keep if we wanted. Now the food: DELICIOUS. My husband ordered ahi tuna bowl and it was fresh, great veggies and ahi was great. I had the chicken po boy with confusion potatoes. The seasoning on potatoes was so excellent we bought a bottle of the seasoning. (And one is on every table for use in case you want more). Their glasses baguette was fresh and chunky with yummiest sauce. Chicken was juicy and seasoned perfect. But the best sort was put altogether with the cucumbers, lettuce and tomato...it was a hot sandwich that was refreshing and not too filling on a blazing hot day. Started off strong here with the trio of dips (salsa - kind of sweet with a hint of spice, guac and queso). Adrain was the ideal server - friendly, attentive, and apparently able to sense when a basket of tortilla chips is approaching a crisis level. Before we could even start rationing them, he offered to bring more. I was having a full-on menu identity crisis, and he helped break the tie. I went with the taquitos special (which came with a very respectable amount of guacamole) and the chimichurri steak with fries and grilled veggies. Everything was delicious. And can we talk about the fries? They have a little sugar on them, which makes them extra addictive. For drinks, I was eyeing the Confusion Hurricane, but Adrain steered me toward the Peach Paloma because it was less sweet. Excellent call. I also got the strawberry basil agua fresca with tequila added because apparently hydration is important. The covered patio is a game changer for families. There are lawn games for the kids, plenty of space, and easy bathroom access...which every parent knows is a luxury amenity. As first time visitors to Chattanooga, we were trying to decide where to eat and were honestly shocked by the number of reviews State of Confusion had. It is not often that you see a restaurant with more than 5,000 reviews and such a high rating, so we thought it was a safe choice. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the reviews. The service started off slow. It took quite a while before anyone came to take our order. Later, a fourth person joined our table, and it took even longer for us to get someone's attention so she could order a beer. For food, I ordered the Ahi Tuna Bowl, one friend ordered the Creole Ceviche, and another ordered the chicken entrée. My Ahi Tuna Bowl was fine, but it was not anything I would rave about. The bigger issue was that they brought out the wrong entrée. My friend ordered the chicken but was served the chimichurri steak instead. After waiting for the correct dish, the chicken ended up being incredibly spicy. She enjoys spicy food, but this was so spicy that she could not enjoy it and only managed a few bites before giving up. My other friend was also disappointed with the Creole Ceviche and barely ate much of it. It was unfortunate that two of the three dishes at our table were left unfinished. The one standout was the beignets. They were absolutely delicious and easily the best thing we ordered. The atmosphere was nice, there was plenty of seating, and the restaurant has a fun and relaxed vibe. Some places allow dogs. State of Confusion feels like it was designed for them. During our Chattanooga trip, we ended up coming back more than once because it checked every box: great food, a massive outdoor patio, and a setup that makes dining with a dog easy and comfortable. Dogs aren't allowed inside unless they're service animals, but honestly, the outdoor space is where you want to be anyway. The patio is huge, with covered sections and outdoor heaters that kept us comfortable even when the weather turned rainy. We visited on a wet day and never felt like we were settling for "the dog section." The food was consistently excellent, and the happy hour menu made it an easy choice for a casual meal or drinks. My humans were happy with their food, and I was thrilled when they ordered me a side of chicken. It disappeared almost immediately, which I consider the highest possible review. We have had a string of bad meals on our business trip for the past three weeks, so we were SOOOOO happy to get excellent food for my 50th bday! We ordered via door dash, and it was a good 15 min drive, so it wasn't hot, but still SO tasty! The trio of dips was amazing. TONS of dip, not enough chips, but still so good. The plantain chips were a weird but nice addition to the tortillas. My chicken po boy --- oh my head. So good. You MUST add the shrimp! The little side salad was missing dressing, but still fresh and delicious. Hubby got the steak skewers and even added some of my shrimp, I had so many. It was just delicious all the way around. The vibe is relaxed and social, great patio energy, easy place to hang out with friends, and it feels lively without being overwhelming. The food was solid. Tasty, well prepared, good portions, but nothing that blew me away or felt dramatically different from other brunch spots I've tried. That said, the pricing felt fair. I had the breakfast sandwich and my wife had the Mexican Omelette. The Bloody Mary was actually really good, balanced and flavorful. I was a little surprised they didn't have any stuffed olives (my go-to garnish), and the server wasn't familiar with them, which caught me off guard. Not a big deal, just unexpected. The only real hiccup was at the end. Our ticket got mixed up and I tried having the server correct it. He said he would at the computer, he took our cards and I get a receipt where my card was charged on another ticket. So I ended up paying for someone else's food. It wasn't intentional and these things happen, but it was a frustrating way to wrap up the meal. Overall, I'd come back. Good atmosphere, fair prices, solid food. Good, but not great. The crispy pan seared chicken had good flavor, but it could have been more crispy. And the fries had potential but were a bit on the soggy side. I think the dish sat out for a few minutes too long. The egg rolls and nacho appetizers shared with the rest of the party were good. The chicha morada with one free refill was actually my favorite part of the meal. True to the name State of Confusion, between the entirety of our party, at least two desired menu items had run out, and some orders were missed. First lunch was a bison burger with fries - very good, but burger was not medium as ordered, but rather medium-well (unfortunately, this negates the " perfect burger" props I gave in my first review). Fries were good, service was excellent and it's a nice chill atmosphere. Second day I had the Shrimp Poboy, which was very good but one of the sloppiest sandwiches I've ever eaten due to their splitting the role all the way through (shrimp will not stay on the bun this way). Our wonderful waitress, Lisa Marie, immediately informed us of their complimentary brunch buffet served on Sunday only. She was so sweet and kind from beginning to end. In terms of food, we shared the Peruvian ceviche and roasted vegetables with grain bowl. Having had ceviche a fair amount, this is not bad but also not very authentic. The sweet potato was still raw and the dish could have used a lot more like. We did like the grain bowl with the variety of veggies and the two eggs! There we met both bartenders who were excellent, friendly and efficient. Trent was fun and really helped give our group the opportunity to enjoy this great outdoor space. We got food recommendations, top offs and even solicited dating advice for our only single friend. They have about 8 TVs around so you could settle in to watch on gameday. That's about where it started to go downhill. Our server who will remain nameless to give him a chance to improve asked if we were ready to order. We had to ask his name as he didn't even really seem interested to introduce himself just enter the order and let us tip him. Which was fine, so we ordered a few appetizers and then he pushed for the entree orders as well. Despite the fact that we wanted to enjoy a most delightful spring evening and it was not near closing time at 8:30. After ordering I specifically asked if since he had gotten the orders if he would enter the apps and allow us to enjoy the appetizer course and most likely 1-2 more rounds amongst friends who don't get the chance to hang that often. Instead our server said "the kitchen is slow so you'll have nothing to worry about. Well, much to his surprise, not only did our apps and entrees show up at the same time but we weren't even asked about another round of beverages. Mind you we didn't even get asked about another round at any point of being seated. So that was money missed and overall guest check tip $ amount missed as well. The food was pretty good, we had the egg rolls, gator bites, fried baloney sandwich, pan seared chicken and skirt steak chimichurri. We thought the alligator bites and steak chimi were great options. Our server refused to pre-bus any plates even as we had stacked app plates on top of entree plates which did lose him brownie points. Overall the venue was outstanding and we agreed that if we had stayed at the bar the experience would've been completely different for the better. So there is my advice, go have an app sit at the bar and take your chances there. I hope they can help the serving staff understand that if you space out the app course and entree course, they can improve check averages and also allow the guests to enjoy the experience more. Located in what looks like an old auto mechanic's garage in a funky area just east of the historic southside of downtown Chattanooga, this is a good spot for brunch, especially on a sunny and warm day. The outside seating at least doubles the space. The place was packed for Saturday brunch, but because of the size, the wait was not long. As the name conveys, the menu is a real mashup of Peruvian, American South and even New Orleans cuisine. There are choices that are healthy & some more comfort food, so if you are with a group, there ought to be something for everybody. They have a large selection of Peruvian ceviches, so we had to order the Ceviche Tower. The tower was made of sweet potatoes, stuffed with mahi and shrimp and surrounded by a tasty sauce with corn & various other things thrown in for good measure. The sweet potato tower provided a nice contrast to the softer items and the sauce. Sort of weird, but definitely a fun and tasty item to order. We also had the wood fired veggies and grains with poached eggs. This place has a wood fired oven and it's put to great use on the veggies. They were outstanding in both their flavor and the way they were cooked, with just the right amount of crunchiness remaining. The confusion potatoes provided a good base to mix them with, the poached eggs provided some runny yolk to mix in and the quinoa topped things off. Definitely a good choice. When you order any brunch entree, you can help yourself to what they call their brunch bar. It had tomatoes & onions (just okay), potato salad (good), some other veggie salad with radishes & cucumbers (weird, but good) and oddly also several cookies and brownies (I guess to start and finish off your meal). Service was good even though they were really busy. Overall, a good, solid brunch experience.
