I am very disappointed that I feel the need to be writing this review, but ever since the new owners have taken over Herbs, the quality of all of their treats has significantly changed for the worse. The cookies are stale, the donuts are dry, the cupcakes are flavorless. It makes me disappointed with lack of effort now knowing that the previous owners were in the bakery at 3am preparing for the following morning. Now, all of the treats taste days old. Cost doesn't mean much to me granted I enjoy the product, but I can't justify spending $14 for 2 cookies and a cupcake which I couldn't fathom the taste of. Herbs holds a very special place in my heart because of childhood memories I have there, although I feel deeply let down with the quality of their treats and will not be returning again. read more

Shame on Herb's. I left a 4-star review a few years ago, but I had to update it because I don't want someone going there based on that review and ending up totally disappointed. Honestly, I wish I could give them negative numbers because even one star is overrated. I can't speak for their regular menu, but I ordered a surprise bag on the TooGoodToGo app. Maybe I was wrong for assuming it would contain items from the day before, but what I received should not have been given away--let alone sold for any amount. It clearly had been sitting for at least a couple of days. What I received sent a clear message: they don't value their customers. It's profit over people. Why they would serve that crap is beyond my understanding. Honestly, it should have been trashed. It wasn't even palatable. I couldn't tell what the pastries were supposed to be. They were inedible by my standards, but I bit into two different pastries to give them the benefit of the doubt. They weren't just old and stale--they were bland and stingy on the filling. It was obvious they were several days past shelf life and likely not appetizing even when freshly baked. It honestly felt like the cashier just went in the back and threw a handful of old leftovers into a bag. My experience was 4 months ago, I waited and came back here to check out other reviews older and newer before changing mines just in case it was a one off situation. I pass by this bakery quite a lot, but never actually thought of trying it. Recently, I decided to check it out & was so surprised! For a small bakery, they had QUITE the selection of cakes, donuts, cookies, etc. I got a couple donuts & they tasted PHENOMENAL. I went at a later time, so, it was really quiet, and nobody else was there. The girls that were working were really sweet and approachable too. I need to cut back on the treats, but, I will definitely try to go back to try something else! read more

Order cupcakes for my daughters birthday a week in advance. Showed up at scheduled time -- cashier was clearly confused -- headed to the back and didn't return for 20 minutes. Brought out very plain cupcakes (white frosted vanilla) said nothing -- just that will be $28. We didn't even get to look at them prior to paying. We walked out with the box and 3 immediately fell over and the frosting crushed. They put them in just a flat box without cupcake holders!!! Insane. Very disappointing experience. It was my daughter's 9th birthday and she was there with me and no happy birthday, no conversation at all except "pay me". This place is NOT going to survive. This bakery is located on Larkin Ave next to a gas station. We happened to be driving by and just had to stop in and check it out. Call ahead to check the hours because Yelp says they were closed at noon and it is almost 1pm and they were still open and I am so glad they were! We ended up leaving with 2 peanut butter cookies, 1 sugar cookie and 2 strawberry danish sweet rolls. They were so delicious and very affordable! The strawberry filling on the Danish Sweet Roll was made with real strawberries it was so fresh and delicious. (They also had them available with lemon filling.) Herb's has been here in Elgin for years and I am kicking myself for not trying it sooner. We stopped by on a Saturday early afternoon. As expected of a high quality, independant bakery, their lower cases were filled with a huge assortment of delectable cookies, a great variety of cakes and danish, and a few kringle (my goal of going there). Their bread racks were almost depleted by the time we got there which is a great indication of their quality breads. We purchased a couple of mouse ears which were absolutey decadent. We also purchased a cherry kringle. I had initially some reservations as their kringle is different than the "gold standard" which is O&H in Racine, WI. I'm glad I didn't succomb to my initial reaction because this kringle was flipping delicious. If you get a chance, go get something from them that catches your eye. From my first experience there, your selection will taste even better than it looks. And their product looks very good to begin with. My next investigation is their different breads. Obviously I'll either have to order ahead or get there much earlier. read more

We have been going to Herb's for donuts for quite a few years now and have always been satisfied with the quality/taste of their donuts and danishes. We went there last weekend after not going there for about 2 months & the quality of their donuts has nosedived. This makes me very sad to say this. I received Bavarian cream donuts with not one drop of cream inside. That's right - they were empty! The jelly donuts had maybe one teaspoon of jelly inside them. The danishes were stale, which is weird since we went pretty early in the morning. There were obviously not freshly made that morning. And they changed their recipe for their cake donuts. I swear it looked like they used yellow cake mix and baked the donuts using a donut baking tray. They did not seem fried like a normal donut. We will not be going back. We were always happy to pay more for Herb's awesome donuts but we apparently can't get them there anymore. read more

This is my fourth time trying Herb's and I finally had to write a review. There are a number of great bakeries in the area and Herb's is one of them. This trip I picked up a pre-ordered apricot and cheese kringle. The dough is slightly flaky and similar to a danish. The apricot filling is light and smooth while the cheese is creamy. The two textures and flavors play off each other well. I appreciate that the glaze is on the lighter side and does not heavily coat the pastry. If you happen not to eat it quickly, the pastry lasts well for at least two days. I'm surprised if it lasts that long in our house. On other trips I've tried the almond kringle, lemon danish and donuts, all of which were equally delicious. Herb's, thanks for providing great pastries to the community. read more

This is my boyfriends place to get his favorite donuts. I've never been here. But I did pre order to get his maple nut danishes today since they were out yesterday. I went after work and got there at 7:20am and they were sold out of them. They open at 6. When I picked them up today, I decided to try their cheese danish and cinnamon danish. When I got home, and I cut the cheese danish in half, I saw there was a hair in the middle, right where I was cutting it. It grossed me out. It was long, black and thicker like it was from a beard. I'll let my boyfriend continue to eat his favorite donuts from here. That hair just ruined it for me. For a place that has a lot of high reviews from local people, I'm questioning if they even enforce beard nets when preparing and making these pastries.... All the people there are nice and the presentation of the box is all there but unfortunately that's where the star goes to. I wanted to go back to try the other pastries. I ordered a cake for my son's graduation and while the cake tasted ok the decorations and writing were horrible. It looks like a child wrote it and letters and words were missing. When asked if they could fix it I was told the person that does writing was not there. I contacted them again and never heard back and they never offered money back or a discount. read more

There is no truer bakery in all the land! Herb's is the quintessential old school bakery. They haven't sold out, they haven't moved, and they love the Elgin community. Their social media proves this, they are so supportive and they post like they are friends with never customer that visits their storefront. We love everything pretzel at Herb's! They are Bavarian with the exact amount of salt you need to eat the pretzel without anything else. I also love their sprinkle thumbprint cookies. Simple, delicious! We just discovered their muffins, we were very pleased. I've never done a cake there, but I do want to give them a try because the workers are SO great. The customer service is top notch, so I hope locals, and those from the bordering suburbs, will give Herb's a try. Show up early if you want a pretzel, they sell out quickly, and load up on other bakery goodies while you are there!!! read more

It truly pains me to leave this review. I have been bringing pretzel rolls and donuts to school for 32 years. I started bringing them when I taught at Washington Elementary School not far from there. I have been teaching and bringing pretzel rolls to Park Ridge for the last 30 years. I believe there is new ownership because I never had service like I have had the last 3 times. 2 times ago I went in and picked up my treats and when I got to school, I found that I was shorted 6 donuts. I reached out to them and heard nothing back. I figured I could let it go and ordered again a month ago. This time I skipped the donuts and just got the pretzel rolls and went to Country Donuts. Today is my final experience with Herb's. Today's my last treat day at school because I am retiring at the end of the year so I ordered pretzel rolls and donuts. Pretzel rolls are the reason that I have always gone to Herb's. My fellow teachers enjoy them and they always know I have brought treats because of them. I ordered them for pickup at 6:00. I arrived at 6:30 and was told that my pretzel rolls were not ready. The baker had not shown up on time and they could only give me donuts. I asked how long it would take and was told that it would be 30 minutes. I expressed my disappointment and got no apology, nothing. When I got to school I opened the box of donuts. I was half expecting a few extra donuts as a way to apologize, but nope, no extra donuts, in fact, I was shorted one donut. Apparently counting is not their forte nor is customer service. read more

Herb's bakery used to be one of my favorite places to pick up a little treat for the insurance agents I visit. If the agent sends us a client, I would like to reward the office with something edible. I had two leads come in. Yesterday I stopped at Herb's to pick up a cake for one of them. It was an 8 inch round and while not cheap it was reasonable for a family bakery. With tax it was 29.17. I delivered it to the agent, and everything was fine. Today I went in and try to buy another 8 inch round for my other agent. They wanted to charge me 45.00! I told them what I paid yesterday. I recorded it for my expense report and could even show them the receipt. She went to the register and said no its 45.00 so I walked out. I am not sure if it was discrimination or what but this is just wrong and I will not be coming back. read more

I had a really frustrating experience with Herbs. I had several phone conversations regarding a custom order. I emailed my photo, and paid for the custom cake. The cake my parents recieved looked NOTHING like the photo that I sent, and was bizarrely delivered with 3 huge boxes of cupcakes as well. My parents then had to postpone their anniversary dinner while waiting for Herbs to come BACK to their home to pick up the 96 cupcakes. When I contacted the bakery to express frustration with both the botched delivery, as well as the cake being nothing like what was promised, then didn't even respond to me. Stopped in for a treat. Picked up a maple cinnamon roll and a mouse ear. Both were great as always. Staff is very quick and helpful. They should set out a tip jar, I would be glad to tip, the staff is very bit as great as the baked items. They had some nice "Bears Themed" bat and ghost cookies. One of the girls was working with a guy that wanted to preorder stuff for next weekend. He couldn't understand having to pre-pay for it. Herb's bakery would get zero stars if I could. My wife ordered a custom-made cake for our first grandson's baby shower. She wanted a cake to look like a pair of baby booties, herbs bakery said they could do it. We were first told we could pick up the cake. on Saturday, February 15, but when we got there, they told us no it wasn't ready. We were not happy but agreed that we would pick it up on Sunday, February 16 at 9 AM. We got up on Sunday morning went to church was super excited about the baby shower and going to pick up this amazing cake that we thought Herb's bakery was going to have done for us. When we got there at 8:45 they were closed there. I called and left several messages. Nobody answered the My wife called and left several messages and nobody answered the phone. We stayed in the parking lot until 915 and still nobody was there no cake for us that was promised for us on Saturday and then Sunday morning. my wife is now upset, crying and feels the day is going to be ruined because she wanted this amazing cake that's bakery promised to make. We never got cake from them basically I feel they stole my money and never gave me the cake I wanted. We ended up going to Jewel Osco in West Dundee and bought a sheet cake instead not what we wanted for our first grandchild baby shower. Worst experience ever with herbs, bakery, worst bakery ever worst time ever I will never recommend or go to Herb's bakery ever again and I think people should really reconsider going there before they do anything with them. read more

Over a year ago, when I lived in Elgin and hadn't yet selected the cake for my wedding, I purchased a LivingSocial deal for this bakery. I thought I'd use it to sample some wedding cake or something. But then I moved, forgot about it, and got married. Fast-forward to July 2012. The deal expires July 9th and I want some cake! So, I called the bakery early in the afternoon on the day the deal expired. I was asked if I could be placed on hold. Assuming it was for a couple minutes, I said sure. It was actually thirty minutes. Thirty long minutes. I guess it's a pretty busy bakery, which is a good thing, right? After thirty minutes, I hung up and tried again. This time, someone asked how they could help me. Confused, I explained that I was just on hold for thirty minutes and now when I call again, someone happens to be available? The guy immediately apologized and said he forgot that I was on hold. Wow. That's one way to lose customers. Anyway, I placed my order as best as I could -- I had no idea what the place offered, the prices, or anything. Calling blindly isn't something I usually do (and note to self: don't do it again), and I wish he had been a bit more helpful. After being on the phone with them so long, I just wanted to order the cake and get it over with. I ended up ordering a pound of assorted cookies and a plan chocolate cake/vanilla frosting with "whatever border you want to put on it." The order would be ready on Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday morning rolled around. I called and asked if I could pick it up sooner than expected -- fortunately, I could. Yay! When I went to pick it up, I kind of expected a small bakery filled with delicious goods. Instead, I found a large building with half-empty shelves (where was all the baked goods?!). The two employees were friendly, and my order was ready, but I left kind of disappointed that I drove all the way out there for something I wasn't excited about anymore. The cake was good -- just a regular cake. Not worth writing home about. The cookies were pretty phenomenal, though. I ate most of the box. Oops. I'm giving it three stars because of the annoyance over the phone, the small amount of baked goods available in the shop (if the shop were smaller, then the empty shelves wouldn't be as noticeable), and the fact that it was just like any other bakery of its type. read more

I saw an ad on Facebook for their gorgeous Fourth of July bouquet cookies. I went and got 4. It was busy. The people before me got their order in boxes. My girl put mine in a wax bag. The nice gentleman ahead of me in line looked back at me and said to his girl ringing him up, "here's five dollars to pay for hers". I saw the two girls at the register talking about it. They never applied the five dollars to my order. The old man walked out thinking he paid it forward and he really didn't. I was confused. I got home and all four cookies were broken and smashed up. With that amount of decoration they should've gone in a box. I was really frustrated with this visit. The old man said to me when we were walking out, "I know that didn't cover all of it, but I tried". I didn't have the heart to tell him what happened. read more

I'm sure most of the reviews that are good take place under the previous ownership. I've patronized Herb's 3 times since the ownership change and it's nowhere near as good as it was. The donut recipe has changed, and they must be made a day or two before. The donuts aren't as fresh. Sad to see this place go down hill. read more

Herbs bakery is by far the best bakery I've ever been to. I've been going there since I was little! They have the best cookies, cakes, and staff!
