The attitude I faced at Hereghty today upon entering the cafe twice within an hour, will stick with me for a long time. Perhaps the counter attendant is related to the owners, based on the confidence with which she displayed her disdain for communicating with a customer. As I read other yelp past reviews especially the WiFi one, I can picture the non- working WiFi scene vividly. The woman I worked with today must be the same employee that was so apathetic with the messed up WiFi. One entering a great little cafe like this one as a respite, deserves better treatment than I witnessed. I love the food at Hereghty. I drove two hours to Raleigh for a client meeting and decided to stick around after to work from a local coffee shop. My client recommended Hereghty Heavenly Delicious for their pan au chocolate, laptop-friendly space, and great drinks. Unfortunately, they were out of pan au chocolate (a bummer, but not a dealbreaker), so I ordered a sugar-free vanilla matcha with oat milk for $8.21 (tip included). Before ordering, I mentioned to the barista that I was there specifically to work from my laptop. She knew the internet wasn't working but didn't mention it--so I bought my drink, got settled, and then discovered I couldn't connect. When I asked her fi the internet was working she just said, "Nope," like it wasn't a big deal. Definitely not what I wanted to hear after planning to spend the afternoon there. Hoping for a solution, I asked another staff member (maybe the owner?), who told me the WiFi was working fine for them in the back. When I explained it wasn't working for me and what I had tried, she just kind of shrugged. I totally get that they're not tech support, but a little effort to help or at least acknowledge the situation would have been nice. At that point, I packed up and found another coffee shop 20 minutes away that ended up being amazing--great vibe, solid internet, and a menu that had me wishing I had come there first. But then, in true "one of those days" fashion, I realized I left my computer charger at Hereghty (are you kidding me!), so back I went before giving up on staying in Raleigh and heading home. That said, Hereghty does have some good things going for it: A nice selection of pastries A normal café drink and food menu A quiet, cozy atmosphere Plenty of seating inside and out A convenient location with lots of parking Maybe it was just an off day for all of us, but the lack of communication about the WiFi and the indifferent response left me a little disappointed. Entering the cafe made me feel like I was walking into an art gallery deep within the confines of an old castle. The lighting was bright enough to see what you would be eating/drinking, but dim enough to lay back and relax in the comfortable leather seating throughout the space. The cool thing about the art display on the walls is they have the artist information and pricing if anyone is interested in purchasing. Love that! I started with the white chocolate latte. I'm not an avid coffee beverage drinker, but when I do drink it, THIS is what I want it to taste like. Fresh, hot, with the right amount of flavor and smooth. Next, I HAD to try the breakfast avocado toast. It had hard boiled eggs, bacon and cheese and YES! the combination was everything I could have hoped for but nothing I would have thought to make myself lol (which is why I come to the experts in food). The eggs were boiled to perfection, the avocado was fresh, the bacon had just the right amount of crisp and the melting of the cheese brought it all together. My cousin was with me, and she had the Italian panini with the Liquid Brownie drink. The young ladies behind the counter were very kind and friendly, however the owner/manager came out and said they couldn't do ice tea from tea bags and only had one flavor of herbal ice tea which I said that was fine I can have that instead. Her response was "we already opened the tea bag so I guess we will have to see if this works" and when I said I'll pay for a tea bag (in addition to the ice tea I already paid for she seemed annoyed and unwilling to sacrifice the cost of a tea bag for good customer service. I want to try and support local places but not with her attitude. read more

A drop by lunch turns into frustration! I ordered a crepe and my wife ordered a panini. I asked her in front of the counter lady if she would like to split a house salad. She rang up a large capris salad at 6$ more which I caught. Then asked for a tip (a self serve restaurant) but what the heck, gave them 15%. After we had paid, she told my wife her sandwich comes with a salad. Asked for water - told that is self serve. Meals were served but no salad. You got it. We had to go ask. When it came half way through lunch, one fork. When we asked for a second fork, you got it, self serve. Of course we had to point out the the bin was empty! I have never been so rudely treated in all my years. My friend and I were first time (and last time) visitors to this cafe and had questions about the baked goods - which are popular and what's made here. She barked at us, didn't want to answer. When I asked about the cakes she said "they've been frozen. No idea how long they've been out". Ok. Won't get those. Tried asking what a cortado but forget getting that answer. Hereghty used to emulate a fine French Pastry Shop, but not anymore. It is trading on it's pretentions and not much else. When money parts ways with my wallet, I wan to know it is going to a good home, a good cause, or a good time. I don't want to feel that I have just been duped, highway robbed. Hereghty had the art down, lovingly crafted pastries and baked goods which were fabulous, and coffee to back up the attitude of trendy non-starbux baristas. North Raleigh is full of snooty ladies with fresh manicures and stretched skin over their newly done "work" who don't mind plunking down a sawbuck on a skinny mocha latte. But isn't it nice to be greeted with a consistent taste and somewhat represent the level of cost? This place has gone through many conniptions and fits as some or most of the original staff have left and along with it, some of the heart. I remember sitting and watching one of the two "owner/managers" swan around outside yapping on his cellphone like a Wall street Mover and Shaker, instead of going inside and learning how to make a good cup of coffee. Who was he trying to impress? The place was often empty. (Why was I there? Giving the benefit of the doubt and needing to pay rent someplace while waiting for a friend). Ok, back to the coffee. Nowadays, this place is a hit and miss. the coffee never tastes the same, overpriced, steer away from the "barista" with the buddy holly glasses if you want a decent brew. The pastry case looks the same, but I resent being expected to pay $1.75 for a mini cookie. When it really should be called a sampler. The other items are sweating in their cases and just don't have the appeal they used to for the price. Do you think rich people are stoopid? How do you think they got that way? To be fair, the Apple Cake is still a good bet. And whatever you do, do not, I repeat do not ask for a mocha. Initially this place was awesome. We had been searching all over the Triangle for a comfy coffee shop that played chill music where we could sit with a laptop four a couple hours with our coffee. Finally found Hereghty and it was welcoming, played jazz, and even served a great salad after a couple of coffees. We loved it and decided it was our new haunt. But now it's changed. Last few times they were playing hard(ish) rock. Got a glare from the woman behind the counter, and no verbal response, when we asked for chiller music. I'm not a regular coffee drinker, but occasionally I like to enjoy a cup of latte. The lavender latte at Hereghty is a must have, lavender scent is so heavenly delicious. The staffs there r very attentive to my needs (My baby is allergic to milk protein, the shop offers a variety of alternatives). The atmosphere is nice and quiet if you want to get some work done on ur laptop or do some reading. Whenever I get some 'me time' away from child care, I always come here to relax. My kid especially loves their egg cheddar bacon croissant and Lemon cake. The food is always so fresh and delicately made. I highly recommend you to try this place. This is a great local coffee shop and bakery for a light meal or quiet conversation. I love that you can enjoy a quality beverage in a real mug, not a cardboard cup. The menu has great cafe dining options and the bakery selection is extensive. The waitstaff was quiet, but courteous. My daughter had the chocolate frappe and I had a lavender tea latte. Both were well made and large in size. My daughter ordered the egg &cheese croissant. It was huge and looked and smelled delicious so I had to help her out. This little bakery, hidden away in Glenwood Village was a nice find, prior to starting my diet. The young man working behind the counter was friendly & helpful, assuring me that "almost everything" had been baked in-house, that same morning. The pastries on display lost this bakery a point because the various mousse & cake offerings were smushed into cheap-looking flimsy plastic containers. The crème brûlée had a nice flavor & crunchy glaze, but the portion was extremely small for $6, and was a bit challenging to eat with the fork provided. Also, the crème part suspiciously tasted like instant pudding. The ginger cookies were large & chewy with a good balance of mildly spicy ginger sprinkled with crystallized sugar. I'd return for the ginger cookies, but most of the prices were too high for the small portions. I've passed this place a million times going to the Harris Teeter so I finally gave it a try! Overall, it was sort of fine. Definitely has potential to improve. I came in and the staff was chatting amongst themselves. They seemed friendly enough and one of them came to help me after a minute. They have an array of baked goods so I asked for a recommendation on which to get. The guy gave me 6-8 options, which was a nice variety but still didn't help me choose! Not knocking them in the rating for that, I'd just recommend that they have a shorter list of recommendations to really highlight the stars of the menu. The interior looks dark from the outside, but inside they have an array of tables. It looked like they were going for a local coffee shop vibe. Not sure if they have wifi (I wasn't staying). I ended up getting a slice of the Oreo cake. For a fairly modest sized slice, it came to $7-8, plus tip. Now I know it's a more upscale cake than the grocery store, but definitely not in the range of a local coffee shop! Regardless, maybe the taste will make it worth it, I thought. When I got to try it, it was good but not mind-blowing. It was pretty light on frosting so it was mostly cake, not much Oreo. We came across this establishment while scrolling through Grubhub for dinner ideas. After seeing all of their delicious options, we quickly put in a delivery order. We ordered sandwiches and various desserts. The egg salad croissant I ordered was a lot bigger than I anticipated. Although I was not a huge fan of the egg salad (had a strange flavor I was not used to), the croissant itself was very flaky and tasty. My fiancé did like the egg salad on his Joey's sandwich he ordered. For the side items, we chose green salads with balsamic dressing. For dessert, we tried the flourless chocolate chewies (it's plural but you only get one), honey walnut strudel, chocolate ganache cake, creme brûlée cheesecake, caramel cake, and an eclair. We clearly were in the mood for dessert and could not decide which one to try. The creme brûlée cheesecake was my fiancé's favorite. I liked the chocolate ganache cake but definitely would have preferred more ganache between the layers to give it more moisture and flavor. The prices were as expected, but they are on the higher end for cafe desserts. We wouldn't order from here often, but will likely order from here again soon! read more

I picked up a few pieces of cake, the worker tried to place both slices (which were in salad size containers) into a small brown lunch bag. Clearly it was not going to fit so she decided to tip the cake slices and handed me the bag. Needless to say the slices tipped with the frosting separating from the cake. This is a true (or as true as it gets in NC) European-style Patisserie. The atmosphere was wonderful. I stopped by between 4 and 6pm to eat something delicious and get some work done over a cup of coffee. The coffee (I just ordered plain, brewed coffee so I don't have a comment on their espresso) came in a big mug. Everything in the pastry counter looked delicious--there were a variety of cookies, cakes, and other treats. I opted for a decadent caramel/chocolate tart that was amazing. It was rich and gooey. The caramel was cold and the crust wasn't amazing. Overall a three-star pastry but a five-star atmosphere led me to settle on four stars. Inside, Hereghty is quaint. It's small and narrow with just a few tables and the long counter. Additionally, there are several small tables outside. They face a parking lot (my biggest gripe with living in Raleigh--every awesome little patio faces an unattractive parking lot). My wife and I have been coming here for several years and have always had a great experience with the coffee, food and staff. That came to a screeching halt this morning! We went in for our normal latte and knew from the unhappy face that was behind the register this was not going to be our typical Hereghty experience. The cashier wasn't friendly, was unapologetic when I ordered my latte with whole milk and there was none. I ordered the breve latte to get the whole milk experience and would've expected a tiny discount as a gesture of customer goodwill. Nope! My wife asked to pick her chocolate chewy, nope! The cashier plucked one off the platter and threw it on the plate and slide them across the counter. I witnessed her rudeness to another customer while drinking my latte. Management, this person is the face of your business, she shouldn't be! Incredibly unprofessional and if she remains employed by you I'll take my business elsewhere. Food remains excellent. Coffee remains excellent. Please work on the service aspect. read more

Went here for a late breakfast. We got a Turkey panini, ham egg and cheese croissant, Nutella beignets, hot chocolate, and an orange juice. The place is small and cute. The OJ is Tropicana on ice. The Turkey panini is probably the most bland sandwich I've ever had. The croissant sandwich was huge and my husband said he enjoyed it. The hot chocolate was awful. It was just barely warm and was very powdery. I asked for some whipped cream and they pulled out reddi whip. The beignet was delicious but for $3.95 only comes with one small one. Came here for an after church treat with some friends. Outdoor seating is comfortable and away from traffic. I ordered the spinach, feta and tomato crepe and was a great choice! Good-sized crêpe warmed up nicely. It was filled with chunks of feta cheese, fresh spinach and sliced tomatoes. Can't beat it for under seven dollars. I stop in here about 3-4 times a month, I'd frequent more often but it's not on my way to work. The pluses, customer service, the bakery/pastries and their coffees! However, their food (menu) is average. I wish I could give it a higher review but I can make a more flavorful ham, egg and cheese at home. I would give 1 1/2 stars. Why the half? Well one time I actually got to eat there. What do you mean? Well, I have been there 3 times. Once, in the morning, they actually had food. The second time we went was at about 9:45pm on a Saturday. Let me be clear I am willing to pay out my a** for good pastry, desserts, and chocolates. And, I will skip well-rounded meals to gorge on these items. So imagine my surprise when an more than an hour before closing there was no dessert, not even a crumb. "Okay, they had a busy night, I'll get there earlier next time," I thought to myself. The third attempt was made an hour earlier, about 8:45pm on a Friday night. And guess what, there wasn't a thing left except some truffles. I like truffles, but are you serious. By nothing left, I mean the lights were turned off in the cases. Again we were greeted by the lovely ladies with their hubbies credit cards. On our way out, emptied handed I might add, I heard them say, "I guess they didn't want the truffles." At first I thought they might be acting snooty, but soon realized they probably seen a slew of people go in and come out empty handed. How in the world do you make any money like this, not to mention that they make no apologies for being out of EVERYTHING.
