I had two outstanding experiences selling pocket watches in two HERITAGE auctions. My entry into their process was through the Beverly Hills office. There I was met by a warm, helpful staff. They showed a genuine interest in making me feel comfortable with the auction experience. Every one of my questions was cheerfully answered. What they didn't know they phoned around until they found the answer. The watches were then sent to Dallas where I was assigned a specialist/coordinator. We worked together to establish a sales price and the catalog description for the watches. While the specialist's knowledge was far superior to mine. I never felt talked down to or patronized. Heritage then mounted an outstanding marketing campaign. Watch collectors around the world were made aware of the sale. Bidders received tons of information. They had only to ask. One buyer, after receiving his watch, felt that the watch fell short of its description. Heritage refunded his money. I felt good about my sales, the prices received and how they were sold. Heritage obviously cared about the buyer and seller making these sales an outstanding experience for me. OK Everything I consigned did not sell for as much as I hoped/expected/was-estimated it would sell for. Some things might not have sold, so I did not put a reserve on them. However, other things sold for more. That is the nature of the auction game. When it is only one thing, or a singular experience, that was not as good as you hoped for, it feels really bad. After multiple experiences it evens out and you get a little more philosophical. As for the business itself, I found them to be honest, reliable, and helpful in all areas. They are a credit to the industry and their website is first rate. Their online auction services are state of the art and have been a game changer in the coin collector world. read more

I called Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills to take a look at my collection of over 100 different paper bills ranging from every continent in the world. These bills were dating back all the way to 1930. I arrived and was met by a man named Harry Metrano. This so called specialist shocked me with how rude he was and his manners. I was a potential client until he treated me like trash. He told me that my my pieces were worth about 50 cents to a dollar each when I had gotten them appraised before hand and some were worth up to a few hundred dollars. The collection included over 100 different countries and territories and he suggested I take them to a currency exchange. If this man had maybe spent a little more time looking at them he would have realized almost all these bills are of currency that does not exist anymore, even countries that don't even exist. He didn't even take any time too look at my second collection. Harry needs to grow up a lot and then he needs a customer service training exercise. I cant believe such a prestigious company would have hired such an awful representative of the company. read more

I really like this auction house. But, of course you need to do your research before buying or selling. If you want to buy just set your own limit of what you are willing to spend including the auction commission. If you are selling items for auction than keep in your mind what you expect to make. This is just basic common sense. I just sold a Tiffany Diamond ring at another highly respected auction house. I paid $38,000 for the ring but only got $18,000 for the ring. My family thought I lost money, but I paid high retail for the ring and I feel fine about what I got. There is a big difference between retail and liquidation and this happens. Overall, I made a ton of money with some items selling far above the estimates, and some lower, some at an average. In the entire auction I sold a ton of jewelry. No auction house is perfect --just realize that. If they place your items at high prices they may be unsold. So, in short--do your homework and of course if you are not happy with the auction house, if the people are rude or just not communicating well just don't consign with them. I bought a gorgeous Tiffany Art Deco platinum Emerald and Diamond ring from Heritage and all the Emeralds were damaged. I took it to Tiffany and they sent it to NYC and repaired the ring and charged me for the repair. Now I have a very fine ring. So, even Tiffany charges for work they do on their own jewelry. I will continue to buy at Heritage--I am just careful what I buy and expect that 100 year old jewelry, and 200 year old watches will have issues. OK- so my experience was pretty bad. I consigned a vintage photograph that my rep at Heritage valued at a starting bid of $1,500. So, I consigned it for an auction scheduled 2 months from that date. However, and here's the kicker - I consigned it in Beverly Hills, but the auction was in Dallas, so they shipped my framed item to Texas. Come auction day, it didn't sell, so now I have to pay a packager and shipper to retrieve the item and ship it back to L.A. Cost is $105.00. So that got me to thinking and my advice is to anyone consigning items to this auction house- DO NOT LET THEM SHIP IT OUT OF STATE. Instead insist on waiting until the next local auction. My gut tells me that PERHAPS they accept local consignments, then ship it out of state and when the item does not sell and the consignor realizes the cost of retrieving the item, many times it is abandoned and VIOLA! Heritage acquires a future auction item at ZERO cost. So - be careful and don't let them ship it out to one of their other locations. read more

Our mother passed away last October leaving us a collection of coins in a safety deposit box. We had no idea what the coins were worth, so all of us took turns searching the internet for current prices. It was exhausting. A family friend suggested Heritage Auctions. We called and spoke to Harry Metrano. We communicated by phone and e-mail, exchanging photos and information over a five month period. His considerate manner and no pressure attitude convinced us to take the coins to the auction house. We were there 2 hours and left the coins Harry thought he could auction successfully with him, and sold the rest to Heritage Auction.
