Awesome place, definitely check out Unico! We dined here at an odd hour on Saturday afternoon, we were the only patrons at the time. We brought our baby daughter, and the staff was very accommodating. The space is dramatic with the black walls and decorations, a nice bar area in front and a warm dining room in back. The menu had a great list options and we started with octopus, portabello with cheese, and a Manhattan. For our main courses, we ordered the special bone in short rib and seafood fettuccine. For dessert, we shared an apple strudel with caramel ice cream. Overall, the food was delicious, beautifully presented, and had solid portion sizes. The food varied on a spectrum of fusion Latin and Italian, which yielded some interesting flavor combinations. It was fun to see how the chef experimented and generally worked well. Manhattan was on the sweeter side, which I prefer, while my wife liked less, still solid. The bread was more cakey, thick, filling with a crispy, medium-thick crust. I ate a lot, using it soak up the delicious sauces of our dishes. Octopus was a hit, that plate was cleaned up. It had a nice salt char, and the squid was well cooked, playing well with the spicy hummus. I could have eaten this as an entree. The mushroom with cheese had a wonderful white sauce that was soaked up by the bread. A generous portion of polenta served as a vessel for sauce delivery. I'd eat this as a main course as well. The bone-in short rib was very impressive and fork tender. The rice and tangy green sauce was a delicious pairing. Seafood fettuccine was the tastiest dish. A sizable portion of crab meat, large, succulent shrimp, and well cooked noodles featured heavily. The shrimp were not over-cooked, the pasta also had a satisfying chew. Flavor abounded in the sauce, which cleaned up well with the bread. Our dessert, compared to everything else, was a little tame. It still tasted good, especially the caramel ice cream. However, it lacked the fanfare of the other dishes. Service was amazing, right amount of attentive and helpful with our baby girl. The even invited us into the back kitchen for her to look. Definitely check them out, we'll be back to try other dishes!

Unico is a worthy successor to Il Vicinato which occupied this Heart of Italy space for many years. I'd been a frequent diner in the 90's and early 2000's when IV was in its heyday. We had a fabulous evening! Impeccable and friendly service set the table for a remarkable meal. We started with fried calamari in a spicy/sweet sauce--good not great--which was followed by superb entrees. My wife had a perfectly cooked branzino filet while I feasted on a massive melt-in-your-mouth bone-in short rib in a zesty avocado sauce. We finished with an apple torte with ice cream that looked nearly too good to eat; we got over it and practically licked the plate. $25/bottle corkage fee Un brindisi a un ristorante straordinario! Street parking is easy and a valet is available.

Went back to Unico now they've changed their menu a bit. Their food just blew us away. It's pretty shocking since this quality of food you would expect it at a restaurant up in Gold Coast or West Loop. I have no idea what the chef's credentials are but this place needs more love! 1. Octopus with black hummus - the octopus was tender and flavorful but the black hummus stole the show along with the chipotle red pepper sauce. 2. Short ribs - my boyfriend had this and it fell off the bone. He devoured the whole thing in minutes haha 3. Scallops - the scallops were sweet and soft, not overcooked and the lemon sauce was a perfect balanced. The mashed potatoes were definitely homemade which were amazing. 4. Oysters - We originally didn't order this but then we overheard the next table that they have oyster Rockefeller and we had to order it! I love their take of using blue cheese and fresh leaves and herbs (I feel like most places use frozen spinach) the crumbs soaked up all the lemon butter and oyster juice, it was delicious! 5. Baked clams - it's our favorite and our go to! The cheese, clams and crumbs all mixed together is flavorful.

Eight of us dined last night at Unico, and it was a wonderful experience! The food was amazing, especially the pastries made in house. The ambience is cozy, and the service was amazing. A five star experience!

Unico is a gem. The service and food are amazing. We had the beet salad, fresh and topped with goat cheese. The tempura shrimp was delightful & beautifully plated. Crab cake was a nice size and sitting on a delicious sauce. Had the short ribs as an entree, was full of flavor. Beignets with carmel gelato and mango sorbet for dessert. Can't wait to go back! Music was good too!

New concept in Pilsen near the Italian restaurants on Oakley. Came in with a group of 4 and everything was delicious! I would say the beef shank was my favorite. The shrimp tempura could use a little more crisp and a little more spicy. Service was on point. It was a slow night but I hope business picks up. At a time where I feel prices to go out are rising the pricing wasn't bad at all. Also it's BYOB with no corkage fee!!! We definitely will be back!

The restaurant is not busy at all. We were seated right away. Our server was nice and attentive. We ordered pizza and pasta. Pepperoni and Whipped Ricotta Pizza - cooked perfectly, fresh ingredients and delicious! Served hot! Short Rib Pappardelle - to die for! This is very tasty, the pasta is cooked al dente. The short rib sauce is ssosooo delicious! We sat by the bar overlooking the open kitchen. It was nice to see the chef make the pizza and make the pasta. Normally I hate those kinds of large group dinners, but this was the perfect spot for it. The service was absolutely wonderful. I don't know how our server stayed so cool and calm with a group that size. We got a variety of things. EVERYTHING was amazing. If you have seen any of my other reviews, I always get a meatball when I'm at a place that has them. They almost never live up to my expectation. But this place has the new gold standard for a meatball. It was everything you want. It is fork tender, full of flavor, no chewy ground up bits. The pizzas were authentic and thin. With fabulous house made red sauce that wasn't too thick and overwhelming. The flavor was A+ The cocktails were so good! All made from scratch with love. The ambiance was cozy and comfortable. Perfect for a group or a date. They have a full bar, and also great seating with perfect lighting. This is a new favorite for me in the city.

The ambiance is nice with the restaurant not too dark but still has moody lighting. The entire time we sat down there was a huge group of people waiting for a table, so definitely make a reservation! For apps we got garlic bread and Caesar salad. The garlic bread was a rec from our server, which did not disappoint. They brought out melted butter to pour over the bread. Caesar salad was interesting, it has chopped celery inside which I didn't realize until I started eating. I don't like celery but my sis does and she liked it in the salad. Pappardelle alla porcellino and chicken vesuvio were AMAZING. Pasta was fresh and the chicken was so decadent. Both mocktails I were delish. The tiramisu was SO GOOD. I came here for a business dinner with about 6 others. The only frustrating part of our experience was we made a reservation online weeks in advance and when we arrived we were told that they basically overbooked every night and when you reserve a seat you're just saying you're coming. So we showed up and were told we were going to wait an hour. It sounds like they are super busy, but there are better ways to ensure the restaurant is selling every available seat rather than offering basically fake reservations that don't mean anything when you get there. Someone in our group complained enough about it that they sat us and did honor the reservation which we appreciated - given that it was a business dinner though, I think it was awkward we had to do that. It just was a LOT of work to organize multiple out of towners getting together and to show up and potentially wait an hour would have been so inconvenient. They really should fix this problem. The reservation issue aside the experience was great. The service is just sort of meh I didn't feel like they were above or beyond and didn't note anything exceptional there. But the food..... the food is the main event for sure. Everything I tried I loved. I had just had Italian the day before so I didn't want anything that felt "too Italian" (lasagna, pasta, pizza, etc) so I got the braised short rib over polenta which was a nice change of pace. It was amazing. Some of the best polenta I've ever had. I am already looking forward to the next time I can go back! The food here is outstanding. If you are able to go, I would highly recommend it.

The octopus surprised me because octopus can be hit or miss for me, but they did it really well! The table bread was also pretty good and cheesy. The Caesar was just fine. Nothing special but not bad (which is good coming from me since I'm not usually big on kale). Of course all of the pastas were yummy. The fusilloni was definitely my favorite from the noodle shape to the sausage and cheese. The ricotta dumplings were suuuuuper cheesy which I really liked (though I could see why others wouldn't) and had a melt in your mouth softness. The rigatoni was tasty, but kinda just tasted like a normal red sauce so would probably try something more interesting next time. We really enjoyed the chicken parm, too. Not as good as the pastas, but definitely tasty and the basil was a good touch. We finished with the guava cheesecake sundae. The fritto misto was ok, the breading tasted like it was old or had been sitting out. Not as crispy as we'd hope. To be honest felt like frozen calamari quality. The Alla Vita chopped was pretty standard, kinda reminded me of Olive Garden salad lol. The stars of the meal were the tagliatelle and cappelletti pasta. Both were super flavorful and pasta cooked well. The bone-in ribeye was a little on the sweeter side, definitely lacked a crust and salt. I'd pass on the steak IMO. Our biggest qualm was the timing of the dishes coming out. The pasta came out 30-35 minutes after the appetizer and salad which is fine, but the steak coming out 15 minutes after the pasta kinda ruined it. We'd love to eat the entrees (steak and pasta) together, and not finish our pasta first or let it go cold then eat steak alone.. ya know? We had ordered crispy potatoes but cancelled due to the wait. Ended the night with mango passion fruit sorbet with a prosecco float. Big mistake on the prosecco float haha it was so tarte and bitter, would def recommend trying the sorbet alone! Overall, glad we finally got to try this place. Focus more on the pastas and skip the steak. Very beautiful inside.
