Been coming here off and on for decades and they've always been there, on the periphery of my fast food radar. There are so many good choices that it's hard to purposefully come to Herm's. For example, Poochies, Dengeos, Hubs, Portillos, Dear Franks, etc., are all so close - what would make someone come here? Well for me, familiarity, they have a lot of solid choices. I like the hamburgers and hotdogs and fries. Ordering is strange, they give you your meal and you pay at the end - they're really trusting, I know. I was greeted by a gentleman with a larger than life persona, a real man's man, someone you want to take fishing and introduced to you sister type of guy. Let me tell you, his name was Scott, Scott new people's orders from their previous visits, that is service. People ordering the usual, loved it! Seeing this when I was asked what I wanted I told the gentleman, surprise me. Boy did he, an amazing Rib-eye sandwich. This was thick and crispy, easy to eat and delicious!! I first heard about Herm's back in 2016 and ever since then, I've only ordered one thing every time I get food from here and it's the chopped steak sandwich. Seasoned chopped steak on garlic-spread bread with lettuce, cheese and tomato. The flavor is consistent every time I've ordered it and it's just made with tons of love. The best sandwich here, ever. What a wonderful place! Large menu from hot dogs to sandwiches to Mexican and even Italian food. Freshly prepared and reasonably priced. And the staff were so friendly and helpful. We were in the mood for pastrami. Husband had the pastrami on rye and I had "The Cardiac", pastrami and fried salami on an onion roll with cheese. Wow, both delicious! One of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had in the Chicago area. Dining area was ample and clean and they have a nice large adjacent parking lot. I have driven passed Herm's Palace for sometime now, being that I work in the Skokie area, but never really had that urge to visit until now even though the interest has always been there. The credit goes to Google Maps for prompting this visit because its 91% compatible matchmaking of me and Herm's urged me to visit. The match came from similarities of restaurants I have visited and reviewed previously. The restaurant has well enough parking in comparison to most along the strip. In fact, it is like Herm's has more than what is needed for the amount of customers that may visit regularly though it seems. Herm's stands out amongst other restaurants in Skokie; it has more Chicago vibes if anything with its decorative interior consisting of Chicago notables which took me by surprise because of its plain looking exterior. I ordered what I visited for which was the grilled cheese burger w/ fries and a canned soda. But, moreover it took me by surprise noticing seafood options on their menu which almost urged me to order tilapia rather than what I solely visited for. Needless to say there are plentiful options including vegetarian, and alcoholic beverages too. Nothing short of great service and my food arrived in a timely manner which is all I could ever ask for with any restaurant visit. Once my order arrived, I literally thought to myself "Houston we have a problem!" because that grilled cheese burger was huge! And it barely fit inside of my mouth! After eating one half of it, I gave in because it was too much. Two hours later I finished it off, but I swear my waist size extended a few inches after eating that damn grilled cheese burger alone. To conclude, I am happy that I finally visited Herm's Palace. Google Maps urged this visit by informing me of its compatibility with other restaurants I previously visited and reviewed. A 91% compatible match later turned into 100% after I visited Five Guys the previous week. I agree with the compatibility because I felt overwhelmed with their food options; they certainly had what my tastebuds typically crave which builds anticipation to visit again. The grilled cheese burger was more than what I expected in size, and definitely good! If you consider ordering it, be prepared to end up leaving with it in a to-go container as like I. Ok so this place has good reviews and after speaking with a worker here. We were really looking forward to our food. I got a steak sandwich for my husband, son had a cheeseburger, and I had a cheeseburger as well. We discovered this place about a month ago, and we've been back half a dozen times since then. Definitely, it's now one of our regular, go-to places. They have a big menu, and we are enjoying exploring it; we haven't found anything disappointing. They have great italian beefs and combos, good subs, delicious soups, good blackened fish sandwich, and I would actually highly recommend their eggplant parmesan sandwich. Best hot dogs I know of. Natural casing dogs have become exceedingly elusive, since I guess most people don't notice, and they cost more. But you don't know what you're missing unless you've had one. They get everything right here. Plus the counter guy who I think is the owner will entertain you with his Rainman human calculator skills. But maybe he just makes up the bill totals. I love this place . Food is priced right and has a blue collar feel missing from a lot of todays restaurants. Most importantly, food is delicious and Staff is really nice. If you are looking for a variety, Herm's is the place to check out. The parking lot is big and not many potholes. The inside could use a little change. The colors could be brighten a bit or just a fresh coat of paint. The staff is friendly and knows the menu backwards and forwards. The tables are cleared as soon as customers leave. Everything I've tried here has been delicious. I've never been disappointed with what I've ordered. I've tried the burgers and the polish sausage. The polish sausage was grilled to the point in which the outer casing was crunchy as you took a bite. I ordered a small cheese fries and it was good. There was plenty of cheese covering the fries. Came in here with daughter after a day at the lake. She said she needed a good hot dog and onion rings so I got on Yelp to check out some reviews and Hermès got our attention. These reviews are no joke and spot on. For one WE LOVED THE WALL MURAL. My daughter noticed one of the owners who took our order was also in the mural and got a kick out of it. The malted milkshakes here are hands-down the best I've ever tasted! I've tried the vanilla and the banana flavors so far, and both were absolutely delicious! I would come here just for those. The eggplant parmesan sandwich is tasty, though not quite Maggiano's caliber. The fries are quite addicting. For variety, the zucchini and chicken wings (both of which come fried) are rich and satisfying. I am always impressed by the large menu and fun, casual atmosphere of this restaurant. If I see something crazy on a menu, I have to get it. It's an addiction, a calling, it's just something I must always do. So when I saw a grilled cheese burger on the menu, my tiny mouth be damned, that baby was going right in it. I lived in Skokie for a few years and my boyfriend at the time would pick us up food from Herm's every now & then. I remembered liking it but wasn't sure to what extent. When I recently went in, it made me remember why I missed living in Skokie so much - so many independent food places like this run by good people with good food. On my latest visit I had the monstrosity of insanity that is the Grilled Cheese burger for $9.60 (that includes fries & coleslaw). This burger does not have buns on the outside, oh no no! It has two buttery ooey gooey grilled cheeses with a half pound burger snuggled between them. I took one bite and it was like the pearly gates opened up and let down a drawbridge letting me in. Such an indulgent meal is not an every day type of dinner, but I enjoyed it greatly as a special treat. It's just like three sandwiches in one so it probably won't surprise you to know that I couldn't finish it all - it made a couple of meals for me. Herm's Palace is full of overindulgent items that I could ramble on about all day. Or if you are on some kind of lame-o diet-o, they got you covered with salads-o. Service is friendly and they treat everyone like a long lost family member. Inside the shop are a few arcade games but the coolest part of the casual eating establishment is the artwork on the wall. It's this crazy mural that includes the owners and a bunch of random Chicago celebrities. We decided to try Herm's Palace. What a shame. I order a chicken gyro plate dinner and I was expecting a dinner with the fries and usually you get an additional item along with coleslaw. Instead I got a gyro wrapped in paper and a bag of fries. What a rip off! A place down the street (Grecian Kitchen) gives you a full gyro dinner plate and then some. This gyro I order here was horrendous. My wife ordered a burger and she said it wasn't tasty at all. This is the last time we try this place. Good greasy grub. Grab great goodies, gorge/graze until guilty. Gah I give up, tried to go for a review that only had words starting with "g". This place is a staple, and although I only live a few blocks away I really only started coming within the last few years. They have all the classic foods you'd expect from a hamburger/hot dog place along with a few extras to take them to the next level (Grilled cheese hamburger). The food is definitely greasy, they do have salads but I have never seen anyone order one before, and the prices are reasonable. It is definitely a little confusing/intimidating when ordering, but once you get used to it the food is totally worth it! read more

Yep it's been a while, but Herm's my pick for a brisket sandwich in the area (corned beef, pastrami, or reuben seem like good alternates). Would be overkill for me to get fries...but maybe if I'm not dining solo. Yeah the fountain drinks are in styrofoam cups, but there is also plenty of canned and other options you can pull from the fridge. I got the double cheese burger with bacon and mushrooms on it (costs a little extra but worth it). The burger was huge! They made it fast and after they make the burger they ask what you what on it. I think this is great because then you get the way you like it. The burger was nice and juicy and had great flavor. The fries were nice and crispy and they aren't very greasy. I've also tried the gyro sandwich dinner. It comes with a S#!&* LOAD of meat! And the tzaziki sauce was great! I'd definitely recommend this dish. It's priced well and quick service. My food review: Those fried mushrooms were just about perfect. The honey mustard was tangy and delicious. I trust a place with good 'shooms so that would be enough, but my italian beef + hot giardiniera + mozz was great too. Quite messy since it was dipped, but packed perfectly to survive an hour long trip and still delicious at the end. It didn't just fall apart into a mush when I opened it up - its wrapping held together perfectly and the bag didn't destroy my seat on the way home. For the situational review I came to Herm's to a nearly full parking lot and a ton of customers at the counter. The man behind the counter was working furiously and, somehow, naming off full orders and the total prices. I was a little confused, but also quite impressed with his skill. By the time I got my order the situation was a little more clear - a big birthday party had just come through along with the normal dinner rush. I think I saw both ends of the spectrum there... a madhouse of orders flying in and the skill that, while busy, they could totally handle it. Beyond that the man behind the counter was extremely polite, extremely fast, and his memory was amazing. I don't think a wait would be typical but it was cool to see them handle their trade. He talked off orders as fast as people could listen and got the kitchen working the second they had a free finger. Great work Herm's - I'll be back to try a few more things off that big menu. For over a decade of driving past here regularly, I swear that I thought that the name was Herm's PLACE until recently. To call it a palace is a bit grandiose, but as a place it is all thumbs up. Out of all the similar burger-and-dog places on this stretch of Dempster, they are easily the best. It has the most character, and the food is pretty good too. They make a top-notch turkey burger, a delicious (and enormous) italian beef, a nice polish sausage, a good hot dog, and a solid italian sausage. The fries are thin fast-food-esque types, served hot but sadly saltless. One time I got a pretty good chocolate malt milkshake. It just needed a little more blending to incorporate the malt powder. There's a metaphor about America in there somewhere. Or marriage? The menu is more expansive than a typical hot dog stand (soups, salads, tacos, et al), but my favorite part is the casual order-taking system. It's just a guy. You give him your order; he relays it to the kitchen verbally; then when the food is ready he tallies your bill in his head. It's totally charming and kind of impressive--they keep it all straight no matter how many people are waiting. read more
