Called in for an estimate they out scamming people asked for a cost on a transmission brand new it's 2500 they wanted 3500 for it when literally every where else was giving way less on the quote. Had this shop inspect a manual transmission for my Chevrolet Corvair. Asked them to disassemble it and inspect all internal parts particularly the syncros. Even provided them with a hard to find internal part. $600 dollars later they said the transmission was in great shape and working fine. After installing it back in the car the transmission still is hard to shift like before. Sent the transmission to another shop and they found the syncros were worn out and 2nd gear needed to be replaced. A waste of $600 on my part. Don't ask them to work on older transmissions. They apparently are not familiar with the operation and inspection procedures. read more

Randy and Jake worked with me in phasing most immediate to least immediate repairs. Both were very patient in explaining not only what needed to be fixed but why. Needed a new transmission for my Nissan Murano. I had a feeling it was going and I have read those CVT transmissions are known to fail. The team diagnosed the issue and provided two quotes for a new transmission, one with a longer warranty. They were able to replace the transmission within a week and the car is running great now. Hope to keep it running for at least another year in hopes the new car prices start coming down. read more

We have taken 2 cars to this place now and have had problems both times. The first time was understandable as there was an unexpected thing that needed to be fixed that ended up costing more and taking more time. A one time problem is fine. However, the second time around with my car was more problematic. My car's air conditioner stopped working so we brought it to get fixed, and then a few days later went to go pick it up and it stopped working a few minutes later when they ran it to double check that it was fixed. The owner (? Maybe lead mechanic?) realized how bad it looked considering my dad had already had problems when he brought his truck last time. They offered to forgo part of the payment to fix it which was very nice of them. However, something else in the car apparently stopped working so of course we ended up paying way more than we originally expected (this is not totally their fault as cars are unpredictable and sometimes parts just fail randomly). AND YET. The kicker is: it's been a few weeks since I've finally gotten my car back, and the underbelly of my dash drawer just fell out (where the filter is). If we pay for something we expect it to be fixed, not fall apart and stop working after we've already paid. I don't think my dad or I have ever been more frustrated. read more

This is an interesting interpretation of events. There was less than a gallon of diesel in that tan. The tank was not filled as part of the repair the tank was filled when we came to pick up the car. Being that they are less than 50 yards from the gas station they really didn't have to fill up the car fully. I might understand if they had to fill the tank and run the engine for some time this using gas to test. But that wasn't the case. This guy called me yesterday and couldn't find the repair in question. Only when I told him my wife brought the car in and handed the repair. So if any ladies out there are concerned they may get ripped off by repairmen you should stay away from Herndon Reston Transmission. My wife certainly felt cheated. Also the in checking my receipts the gas prices for that the stations around this place was $2.58. Not $2.80 read more

Prices are reasonable for NOVA and they are very honest mechanics which is something hard to find. I took my car to the big dealership and they said my issue could not be fixed! I was prepared to trade it in and took it here for a second opinion. They had it fixed before the next day and back on the road. Communication was great with prompt quotes via email for approval. They also provide a free basic check, something the big dealers want $120 for. I found my new local shop. read more

My car is having a problem with A/C cooling.. It needs to be filled with free ion gas to solve the problem. It costs only 14$ in the walmart. These people identified the problem and charged 140$ and it fixed for only 2 days. Talk about OLD SCHOOL! Honest, reliable, prompt, accurate and fair are not words usually associated with car repair shops, but Herndon Reston Transmissions has clearly earned their accolades. I have used them three times now, once to replace a transmission that had gone bad right after I bought a Jeep Wrangler from CarMax. They accurately diagnosed the problem and then worked directly with CarMax to arrange the replacement and even offered the suggestion of my switching to a different tranny that might last longer. Also, since they had the Jeep apart, they suggested replacing the clutch (to save me money in the long run, since I intended to keep the vehicle). This wasn't a case of up-selling, but rather them offering their advice and insights, and me making an informed decision. Yes, I was a very satisfied customer when it was done, paying only the difference in tranny upgrade and the clutch work. Then, my daughter had problems with the automatic transmission in her 1999 Ford Explorer and they were able to pinpoint the problem as a shifting solenoid and promptly replaced the part. We were good to go. Instead of a potential massive bill for a replacement transmission, their honesty and expertise got us out of the shop quickly, for a very reasonable amount. Just last week, because circumstances had changed, I decided to sell the Jeep and wanted everything on the vehicle fixed and in top shape. After got an estimate from a local Jeep dealership (more like a stealership) of more than $1,000 to replace the leaking rear axle seals, I wanted a second opinion and decided to drive more than 40 miles to have Randy and his guys look at the Jeep. While they had the Jeep on the rack, looking it over, they also noticed the rear axle bearings were on their last legs. Also, the dealer completely missed the leaking power steering hose (in plain sight if you looked under the Jeep, as the fluid was dripping down). Needless to say, they fixed everything, after searching for the least expensive parts (from three different sources) for far less than what the dealership wanted for the one repair. And, while I was waiting, I was able to observe their customer service and came away convinced that if you have transmission, clutch, differential, drive shaft or axle issues (or, for that matter, general car repair needs), this is an excellent source of great service. read more

My transmission was slipping when it shifted. I had a diagnosis performed by a name brand transmission chain and the diagnosis was I needed a new $3200 transmission. I decided to try Reston Herndon Transmission and Randy did a lengthy road diagnosis and monitored performance with his computer. The main guy there RANDY knows what he's talking about and was very friendly. We got TRANSMISSION service done on our Honda. We thought we needed to get a "transmission flush", but actually you don't do the "flush" on any HONDA-----if you do it will screw it up. So they just call it Transmission service. The cost was $130, PLUS a FREE SCAN and i think its a little less for other cars. Honda's require a special fluid. He also recommended changing the dual pump fluid because our steering on the Element was jacked up. Basically it cost an extra $40 bucks to see if this worked (which it did, for now anyway), if it didn't work we might have had bigger problems. I will say that I called around to 2 or 3 other places, and not only did they charge MORE money, they had no idea about the special requirement for HONDA's. I would not recommend going to just your local mechanic when it comes to TRANSMISSION service, or you might be very upset. Overall, so far we are very happy. read more

Our Chevy Equinox OBD connector won't work with the emission inspection computer connection. I tested all the fuses 2 times and also was checked by Exxon/Mobil station but will not find any problem. my wife brought it to Reston Herndon Transmission and they found a missing fuse for the OBD, don't know how it happened, now it works and will bring it to gas station for emission inspection. Just got back from talking with Randy at Herndon Reston Transmission. After taking my 2005 Subaru Forester to the nationally advertised transmission shop in Chantilly, I figured that I needed a second opinion. The nationally advertised transmission shop verified my fears that I needed a new transmission. They quoted a cost of $800 for the initial evaluation and then at least $2400-$2800, minimum, to repair the transmission. I have had 3 transmissions repaired at H R Transmission over the years and thought that they deserved consideration. Randy wanted me to leave the car; however, I told him that I was by myself for the day and would have to come back. He stopped what he was doing and offered to take me along on a test drive immediately. He drove the car for approximately 10 minutes and then informed me that the car had a performance problem - in other words, it needed a tune-up. I have made arrangements to take my Subaru back to H R Transmission to get it fixed. Randy offered me a comprehensive inspection of the car for $105 and would not then charge me for the tune-up. Once the car has been inspected (and tuned up) he will prioritize the repairs that are needed and we will proceed from there. I commented to Randy that the folks at the nationally advertised transmission shop treated me poorly and that I much appreciated the way he treated me. I've learned - or re-learned a couple of things today; always get a second opinion, and that my history at Herndon Reston Transmission should have told me something. Yep - Woohoo! As good as it gets. ...Jake Herndon, VA Follow up ... Randy and his crew finished up my Forester on Presidents' Day just in time for the snow storm that evening. I was on the road at 4:30 Tuesday morning getting my Nurse to work in Arlington. Overall Worthless!!!! They are only out for all of your money or will not help you at all. I asked for a quote and was completely refused to even get a quote unless I gave him the trans I was purchasing, the trans that is already in my car and he still wanted to order a high performance trans for my car when that isn't even what I was asking for. I wanted to know how much he would charge for a rebuild on a transmission that would replace some of the more inferior parts with better quality parts in from a quality rebuild kit specifically designed for my transmission. This guy wouldn't even give me the time of day unless it was all his parts or nothing. FYI people, these shops get parts at a discounted price then Mark those prices up to sell them to you. I wouldn't let this shop work on a law mower let alone a car I own and care about every part that goes into it. DONT BOTHER WASTING YOUR TIME WITH THESE INCOMPETENT UNCOOPERATIVE HACKS THAT CALL THEMSELVES "THE BEST TRANSMISSION SHOP IN ALL OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA" complete waste of my time. I have a 2005 ford escape and lost 2nd and 4th gear and now have a o/d [overdrive light] flashing at me!!..uugghh!!..called Herndon Reston transmission and i have a obd code reader and spoke with Randy about my vehicle and codes p0732 and p0734..he was polite and discussed with me what i might be up against.So I toke my vehicle there to let him actually diagnois it[trying to diagnois a transmission problem is impossible over the phone i know this and every other customer should know this as well]however he did give me some info on what those codes usually mean and what possible scenarios i could see..He was spot on with the gear 2/4 band breaking,car was fixed in one day,dropped off at opening and picked up at the end of the day completed and shifting great!And i thought I might have to purchase a new transmission but that was not the case and im so happy about that!!!!...thanks to Randy and his techs at Herndon Reston Transmission!!!!!...thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

There is a reason this shop is always busy. The guys are good at what they do. I was told I needed a transmission form the dealer for my Volvo. The dealer actually recommended Herndon Transmission since the price was so high. Randy and his team did a diagnostic and found I needed a valve body, not the whole transmission.
