It is my go-to order because of the amazing flavor combos and the filling nature of the meal. Hero's folded egg and cheese breakfast sandwich is exactly what it's called, with the option to add a meat of your choosing. While I picked up this time, I usually dine in. The atmosphere of all the Hero locations is always clean and filled with good vibes and energy. The staff are always very friendly, and the service is super quick--even on their busiest days. Atmosphere: Hero is a diner-esque doughnut shop with a very retro and aesthetically pleasing interior. They have a good amount of seating both inside and outside the shop as well as a cute decorative neon light. Service: We ordered some doughnuts at the counter, and were served immediately. The staff were friendly and fast. Food: We ordered a Strawberry Glazed and Boston Cream doughnut. They also offer free coffee for UAB students, faculty, and employees! The Strawberry Glazed doughnut was delightfully sweet and fruity. The sweet glaze contrasted well with the fluffy doughnut. The Boston Cream doughnut was also delicious. We really enjoyed how light the cream filling was and the chocolate crunch bits on top of the doughnut. The only drawback was that our doughnuts were cold and thus not as fresh tasting as they could have been. Regardless, we still enjoyed our treats! Overall: Hero Doughnuts & Buns offers a great atmosphere and selection of tasty doughnuts. How have I not reviewed hero? I've been going here forever and have never been disappointed. Parking can be a pain during busy hours, but I also go when its empty :P. They have great selection of fresh donuts daily, and the hot sandwiches are bomb.com. My go to burger every time is the dad burger... I was on the super crunch chicken sandwich kick for sometime, but I"m still on that dad burger train. Not to say that their other menu options are good, but man. These are probably the best donuts I've ever had! My partner and I spent a weekend in Birmingham and came here both mornings and then came back before leaving to take a half dozen back to our friends. The classic vanilla donut is amazing and the Homewood, I am still thinking about it, it tasted like a strawberry cake!! They are brioche donuts which make them super light and airy, and the glaze they do is perfect - sweet without an overly sweet aftertaste. Their breakfast items were also great - get anything with the hash browns and their signature sauce & the folded egg and cheese is a perfect breakfast sandwich. Terrible service. Ordered online 10 donuts and went to pick up order. All white staff, I'm the only Black customer in line...I'm in the Order line...white staff member comes up to me and only asks me if I'm door dash. Like what? I said no I am not. Then I leave, and when I finally open my box there are only 8 donuts. Missing 2. I come back to get the donuts, the staff doesn't even apologize and then tells me yeah it says you ordered 10 not a dozen and I said yes I ordered 10 I only got 8. She said she put 10 in the box. Popular, cute spot near Railroad Park. The doughnuts are good and fluffy. They aren't dense like cake. That's what I prefer. We usually stop by after our rides to refuel. This is one of my favorite weekend breakfast/brunch spots! I almost always get the loaded hash browns and donuts, which are always delicious! Not a ton of coffee options, but that can be overlooked. The service was speedy, and it usually takes only a few minutes to get your food. It can get pretty busy, especially on the weekends at around 12-1 pm, so I would suggest coming before that time if you would like to get a donut! The interior of the restaurant has a cute diner theme, and fun eighties music is always playing. Definitely would recommend it!! read more

SOOOO, they gave me the donut and I wanted for the burger. I was taking it home. WELLLL the donut did not make it 30 seconds, YUM. When the burger came out, I walked to my car. Easily noticeable at the corner of the historic railroad area, HERO is a quaint, modern donut shop with a retro yet classy vibe inside. There is an interesting mix inside, to be sure. It's able to achieve being a nifty micro bar, fast casual restaurant, and donut slinging chain all in one. I went for the king cake donut (a special for the season) and a "bread pudding" donut that is made from the unsold donuts from the day before, and is only available on Tuesdays and Thursday. I also grabbed a Super Crunch Chicken sandwich and got ranch fries for the side. What. A. Meal! The bread pudding donut was a totally new experience for my taste buds, and really managed to hit that bread pudding vibe while still maintaining that donut goodness. The glaze brought it over the top. The bun for the sandwich (if you can tell from the pic) was heavenly, and the chicken itself was as described: super crunchy! And the ranch fries...I mean, they're ranch fries. Crinkle cut, hit with that seasoned salt, and covered in ranch all over. Fries stayed firm and forkable throughout the meal. 5 stars all around! The seasoning used on these fries and chicken is absolutely delicious and the ranch tastes like the good homemade ranch. The donuts are always fresh and you can't go wrong with any flavor. The burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. We got our food fairly quickly after ordering at the counter. My boyfriend and I came here on an early Saturday morning. We ordered their cereal milk donut and greek yogurt and granola for breakfast to-go. They were packaged conveniently so that we were able to walk around Railroad Park while munching on them. The cereal milk donut was so delicious and not overly sweet, and was portioned just right (it's about palm-sized). The greek yogurt and granola were so good! The jam was so good, and not overly sweet and overpowering the entire food. The same goes for the granola. The fruits were wonderful as well, not mushy but had a good crunch to every bite. Both were priced well for the quality of the food. Service was great and prompt but we were the only customers that early morning. Honestly, the breakfast items were so good that we came to get the same two items again the next morning while we were in town. Heard a lot about this place. Came at 12:30 pm for lunch. Not many donuts left. 2.49/3.19 each is pricey especially since they were dry. It would be nice to offer to microwave for you or have one to do yourself. I'm sure they are better fresh or warm but still expensive. I got a burger for 7.49. It was nothing special but bun was good. Small. Son got Buffalo Super Crunch and said it was great and spicy but small. Fries were so so at best. Probably one and done and won't be back as it was pretty expensive for what you get. read more

I've never been a huge fan of the Hero Doughnuts. Krispe Kreme has just always been my favorite with their melt in your mouth doughnuts. I came here for lunch with my friend Melissa, and we loved it! It's near Railroad Park so parking can be tricky, but we got lucky finding a space right out front. The interior is beautiful! A lot of it is probably from Mile End, the previous restaurant here, but we enjoyed the aesthetics. Everything from the floor to ceiling tiles was very inviting. Their booths and bar area all seemed like cool places to eat, drink, and hang out with friends. We got our order to go and didn't have to wait long at all. I ordered a chocolate doughnut and their Hero House Salad with pimento cheese and their house vinaigrette. There's only one salad on their menu, and that's all they need! It's made with lettuce, tomato, radishes, dill, cucumber, cheese, and my favorite part....bacon! The vinaigrette was pretty good, and their other dressing option was ranch. I'll probably try the ranch next time. The dill made the salad so fresh and different from every other salad out there. The pimento cheese I got on the side was very good as well, just like how I make it at home. The chocolate doughnut was good, but probably not something I would get again in particular. I tried some of Melissa's fries and doughnut holes as well.The fries were hot and crinkle cut. Very delicious! The doughnut holes we heated up, and they became very melt in your mouth! When Covid hit I saw this place going up at the corner of railroad park. Have always loved getting a donut from Hero at Pepper Place Farmers market on weekends and never really had the chance to stop by their homewood shop since I'm just usually not out towards that direction. I stopped by the previous day loving the interior of this place. A nice soft neon light and a clean marble colored interior. Everyone was very friendly and i was surprised to find that they didn't just serve donuts at this location. I grabbed a menu and came back the next day to get some lunch. I got a single Hero Burger add lettuce tomatoes (at no extra cost). I really enjoyed it and had a pleasant chat with who I presume is the owner who also still remenbered me coming in the previous day. The fries are just basic crinkle cut fries but almost everything on their menu has their fluffy Hero buns which I absolutely love! The buns and their OG donuts are extremely fluffy and delicious. No need to say, their donuts are really good. I've always loved Hero but you'll have to give them a shot yourselves and see if you like their style. I would like to add though that the donuts at this location are beyond fresh.
