My Encounter with attempting to rent a car From Hertz Car Rental: July 22, 2026 at around 1:30pm CST Hertz Rental Car, located on East Langsford Road, Lee's Summit MO. Hertz Agent First name I believe Mike, last name not provided. During the week of July 19th I attempted on four different occasions to rent a car from Hertz within the Kansas City, Mo area by going on the Hertz App and making my bookings / reservations. Despite receiving confirmation of reservations for each of the bookings, each morning I would be contacted via text message, canceling the confirmed reservations made. With slated pick up at Hertz Car Rental located at the Westin Hotel, KCMO. Finally, after the third day of having my reservations canceled, I decided to book at a different Hertz location, so I choice Hertz Lee's Summit, located on East Langsford Road. Again my rental was confirmed via a confirmation email. So a 35 USD uber ride off to the location I go, only to be met by this disheveled, face and neck covered in either prison or gang tattoos, missing teeth so when he spoke spit continuously flew freely from his mouth. As a tiered Hertz Member with over 50 nights of car rentals with Hertz alone for just the first half of 2026, I must say that I was somewhat taken aback by the less than polished appearance that you grow to expect from Hertz employees. But not wanting to judge a book by it's cover I observed without comment. Without asking how could he help me, or saying good afternoon, He asked very LOUDLY if I was doing an insurance rental? To which I stated no. I gave him my name / confirmation Number to which he replied: You don't show, you have a rental here. Yes, I understand that the grammar used there is incorrect, but this was exactly what and how he said it. He then would spend the next 3 to 5 minutes searching the system, while searching the system he was talking to himself I guess about "this not being his store, that his store was in gladstone MO, that he was just filling in because the lady called out" again not sure whom he was referring this information too, but maybe he just had a need to say something, I'm not sure. He then said full-size car that I was confirmed for at $231 for the week wasn't available, even though there were plenty of full-size cars visible right there on the lot, I didn't say anything as perhaps those vehicles were pre reserved. He would then state that he would put me in an Infinity Q something, but the price would now be almost $400 mind you each time that he spoke SPIT was flying everywhere, so I did my best to mind my distance and tried to limit as much as I could, even the need of Juicy Mouth Mike having to speak at all. But when I simply questioned the difference in price from what was confirmed, the Spiting employee really had a lot to say, at that point SPIT was flying at a rate that was hard to dodge completely. The Employee I believe name Mike became very GANGSTER like in his demeanor, and stated that if I didn't want the car, then I could go elsewhere. To which I stated, I have no choice but to continue with this rental. Mike then like a Jack n the BOX bounced up from his chair, coming around his desk Spitting while telling me to get out of his store that he wasn't going to rent to me because, all i was going to do was to leave him a bad review, he was saying this over and over as he quickly walked towards the entry / exit door, and yes SPITTING with each word spoken. As I followed him outside of the office, he would quickly stop in his tracks, spin around to YELL in a threatening manner, while taking an aggressive physical stance "You had better stop following me" it was very clear that Mike had become unhinged, and yes It pains me to say that, I think it was between him trying to say Stop & Following that I would take a direct hit right in the face from this flying spit. Now of course anyone witnessing this type of behavior would intimidate. As for me, I mean I wasn't really intimidated as much as I was frighten not by his unprofessional behavior / meltdown, no I was terrified to death of the spit that was freely flying from his mouth landing on me yet again. But me being who I am, I couldn't help but to push back verbally at his attempt to assert dominance over me, at this point Mike quickly shifted his demeanor and became the victim and stated that he was telephoning the police to have me escorted off the property, he then stormed back into the office leaving me outside in the safety of being out of range from the arsenal of spit that I had just witnessed. At this point I ordered an uber, while waiting for the uber arrival the Lee's Summit Police showed up and was totally professional about the entire incident. So back in the Uber by this time the fair for the return was $40 so I spent $75 dollar and the only thing I had to show for it was Toothless Mike spit flying at me. Horrible place to rent a car. Reserved cars are not available and they make no effort to honor your reservation at all. They made no effort to call any other Hertz locations and only offer to upgrade if we were willing to pay the difference. Company policy is that they should find a car that fits your needs without charging for the difference when they do not have the car class that was rented. This is not our first bad experience with this location but it will be our last. read more

Initially, they tried to put me in a sedan. We spoke & confirmed with State Farm & they approved to place me in an SUV. Since my current car is an SUV and I wanted similar. First rental received was a Nissan Rogue. The car smelled, terribly, right when I sat in. Mildew smell. My initial thought process was, my current car, shouldn't take too long to get fixed @ the collision repair, so I can take this rental home, clean the inside and deal with it. I cleaned the car, vacuumed, disinfected, febreeze, whatever I could to get the smell out. And I couldn't, for the life of me. The smell was getting to me + having to have my kids in the car, I couldn't continue this. Other issues - when sitting down, the driver seat was sunken down to where I felt like I was needing a booster seat to even see over the wheel. The windshield washer fluid didn't work & didn't spray directly on the windshield. Again, with the accident - my lower back was not agreeing with me, everytime I got in/out of the car. After a week, I called SF and they told me " this was possibly a flood vehicle " and to return & agreed I needed another. Called hertz & informed them of the issue & came in the next day to swap out. While waiting in the car for my husband to switch out vehicles. I witnessed them hand the returned Nissan Rogue to another patron..without cleaning it. They eventually handed me a 2025 Hyundai Tucson. Gas wasn't filled up - so they told us to bring it back the same way they gave it to us. 75% full. Newer. Yes. Apparently it was cleaned before the keys were handed over - I ended up cleaning it once I got home. Not less than a couple days later - the oil notification pops up. I called hertz & told them, I am more than willing to take it to get changed (I'm obvi not going going to pay for it) as long as they tell me where to go - I was placed on hold for 15 mins and gave up. After another week - unfortunately still in a rental. So I called hertz again & informed them of the oil and asked what they wanted to do. If I was ok to continue driving until my return - they agreed to just keep driving it until then (FYI - new iPhone updates allow you to record your calls - which I did. In case they tried to push anything back on us). After 3 weeks in the Hyundai (a month rental with hertz) my car was done ... I was thankful to just return this rental. Of course - they didn't remember the gas situation and tried to charge us for the gas fees. I made it clear & a point that we were informed to bring it back at 75% full. Which I obliged. If I could give 0 or negative stars I would. As per most of these reviews, we booked an SUV for a cruise 3 MONTHS in advance, confirmed 2 WEEKS in advance, and showed up the day of to NOTHING. They didn't have our vehicle. They refused to upgrade us at no additional charge for THEIR screw up. What they did do was try to upcharge us into a larger vehicle bringing our rental from what should have been $465 to $1000!!! No apologies, no remorse, no correction, no compassion. Just give me your money. I asked about a Chrysler Pacifica as a replacement that was there sitting on the lot. They said that vehicle was already booked out to 3 other people and they had to decide who was going to get it! Shadiest of shady practices. DO NOT GO!!! My husband went for a rental car due to an accident he had they keep charging our bank card instead of the insurance when my husband has full coverage!!! The rental car had been turned in and they still charged our bank card instead of insurance they are a scam and just disrespectful !!! Never got the holding fee back either !!! Not even worth 1 star! This is the 2nd time dealing with this particular location in past 2 yrs and the staff has no customer service skills, they partner with Thrifty so beware of both at this particular location. I had a reservation for a car rental while my car was being repaired. I let the representative know I had a reservation and he states "we dont have a thrifty car." I explain I have a reservation number and ask "so now what do I do, I have a reservation and need to get to work?" He stated "well there was no money involved in the reservation so I dont have a car for you." He did not attempt to resolve the issue or apologize at all. He also looked like he was unorganized pacing back and forth looking for something while trying to help another customer. Management needs to hire secret shoppers to see how these representatives who are maintaining their stores are treating customers. Avoid and do not patronize! Horrific customer service! This Hertz franchise tried to give us an illegally equipped vehicle that was missing a front license plate. However, more problematic was that fact that someone must of driven this vehicle around while smoking blunts for days. This Durango reeked of marijuana! When I confronted the associate about the crappy car - Taylor - her response was "Oh yeah, we did a smoke treatment on it. My manager smelt it and it was fine." My response was "That is not your manager's decision. It's my decision to decide if you've dealt with the smoke problem." So she admitted that this was a known problem car. We kindly asked for another car and her predictable response was they don't have any other cars. "You're telling me out of all of the cars on your lot, none of them are available?" "Most of them have maintenance issues that need to be addressed." I told her then I expect a 50% discount on the rental if I have to take the unacceptable car. Taylor looked at me stone faced. A discount in this situation is not an unreasonable ask. With no response, I had no other option, but to ask to cancel our rental reservation. She acknowledged, but could provide no paperwork to confirm cancellation of our rental and said her manager would have to cancel the rental. Reserved an SUV weeks before pickup. When I went to pickup was told there were no SUV's available, but they had a car. Car was filthy. I went home and detailed it myself with some armor all. Also car only showed 340 miles until empty. When I filled it up at the pump and it actually clicked off when it was full, it showed 586 miles until empty. Very bad experience. Next time we need an extra car I will just go buy one. read more

Incompetent staff! They gave us a rental reservation with confirmation number set two weeks in advance to coincide with our appointment at repair facility. When it came time to pick up the rental they lost the reservation. We ended up using Enterprise which was a positive seamless transaction. Don't answer phone and when they do, will keep you on hold indefinitely. I experimented and was on hold for over 40mins. I hung up. Called again an hour later with same results; no one, just dead air. A children's lemonade stand is run more efficiently and customer service friendly. They did however, work with my warranty company, so that's good. And when I was there they were generally friendly, even if they couldn't wait until I left their office. read more

i travel a lot for work and have exclusively used Hertz in the past. due to my recent experience i am contemplating changing all of my existing reservations and never using Hertz again. I called in to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle specifically a jeep wrangler. i spoke with the manager ( Eric ) lees summit mo. 4 months before my family vacation and he assured me of the dates of picking up at end of business 7-12-17 and i asked him if we could put it on my reservations card and i would pay for it in advance. he said lets just do it when you come in to pick it up. I agreed. 7-2-17 i called to confirm the details and confirm everything. i was assured that everything was on track. I was told to call the day before to confirm pick up time. 7-11-17 morning I called in to confirm pick up and for the following day and i was told there was no vehicles available until 7-13-18 but they would look in to it to find one for me. i was asked to call in tomorrow 7-12-18 I personal went to the location to talk with someone in hopes to be placed in some sort of a 4 wheel drive vehicle. i was given attitude from the staff that morning when she asked me to call in at 3-4 pm on 7-12-18 3:30 on 7-12-18 i called back in and the lady i had spoken with that morning had left for the day. so now i am stuck with a young lady that is working under staffed and no manager available because on vacation and has no idea of the situation. i was rather frustrated when i was told my reservation was mad for 7-13-18 and i could pick up at 2 pm. by this time i was frustrated and needed a car that night so i could be packed and depart 7-13-18 04:00 am. so i went to your competitor that resolved my issue in minuets and at a cheaper price. 7-23-18 8 am i called in to speak with the manager to discuss the ordeal. when he answered i told him who i was and the response was "Monday mornings are crazy busy can i call you in 30 min?" I was completely fine with that. however no call came... 3 pm i called back and he answered. i explained that i was frustrated with the situation and he went in to defense more stating i screwed up my reservations and times. also stated that the girls said i was screaming and cussing at them. NEVER HAPPENED! yes i was irritated and i did tell them they were extremely dis functional and unprofessional and i was taking my business else ware. never did i even raise my voice. I came to write my review and was feeling sad that this is probably my 1st 1-star review, but it seems as though I'm not the first one who has been disappointed by this location. I don't feel bad for being generous with 1 star. I've had great luck with Hertz before and regarded them as one of the top rental companies...until now. If you've ever wondered what is lower than a shady used car salesman/dealer? Well, the answer is easily the Hertz location in Lees Summit. I'd name the location (currently Langsford) but they may pick up shop at any moment and relocate to another street corner. You'd see what I mean if you went in because their signage is on its side in the corner of their barren office. They can easily ask the retired gentleman using a shop-vac to detail the car to move to a different sunny spot in a new parking lot. (Read: super, unprofessional detailing and car prep). I did the manager (Clayton) a favor and went to Auto Zone to pick up a windshield wiper blade because it was missing on my rental at closing time. He wanted to go home and I wanted safe driving equipment. He assured me he would pay me back upon return. I took him at his word. His word is nothing. He would not call me back. When I physically went in to the office since the gal working in the office said he would be working, his staff said he was not in. But he was. They lied to me to my face because he walked out from his office space from the back. He would not give me the money back and said they would submit to Hertz for an adjustment to my bill but would not know when that would happen. He said there was no proof other than his word. If you're a woman, you know the feeling of being mansplained. It's irritating and disrespectful. He did plenty of head bobbing and telling me he couldn't help me. I was going to give a virtual high-five to Kym who empathized with me for this and the problem of the rental car being stuck on the side of I-70 in the middle of no-where Kansas, but alas she lied to my face. I'm aghast at the blatant lie telling me the manager was not in when she opened the door and I saw him physically sitting RIGHT THERE. Kym, if you someday read this, please please don't lie to your customers. Please avoid this location. It's not worth it. There are too many other rental car locations in Lees Summit to do business with than this shady and poorly run Hertz location. I have nothing but good things to say about this Hertz location after renting a car from them 4-5 times. Albeit once they had erroneously put a double $200 hold on my credit card because the car I reserved wasn't available and had rented me another car. On this occasion, I called and spoke with Kim who took care of the issue immediately. In fact, I give kudos to Kim because she has been kind, considerate and maintained her patience with some difficult customers, who would have tested my patience had I been in her position. Each rental has been seamless for me, and as I understand it, previous reviews on here were from another management team that didn't manage well. Although I am a gold member, I was upgraded a few times without them noticing my gold membership or me even requesting a better car, simply on account that they didn't have the size I had originally reserved. No management involvement. A car that could have easily been cleaned up for me that had minor bumper damage would not be given as it has to go to the shop. Good luck renting from here. read more

Let me start by saying GEE I WISH I READ ALL OF THE FEEDBACK here on Yelp before renting from this location. :( I actually have nothing bad to say about the recent SUV we rented from this location. The gals at this office were amazing and were able to get me the vehicle I required at a fair price and on the day I needed it. BUT the man that appears to be running this location (or at least that's the way he presented himself) is an obnoxious, sexist, jerk. Sounds like his name is Eric if I had to take a guess since that is the guy that everyone else said treated them poorly. I patiently waited for him to help 2 other customers in front of me. For both of those customers, he went out of his way to make them happy. One of them he offered a luxury car rental at no additional expense, and the other customer he helped via phone he gave a discounted rate of $50 for a one day rental which was discounted from the pricing they were pulling on the website. He said "we will override that price when you come in so you can get a discount." When he hung up the phone, he must have flipped his jerk mode switch because the way he treated and spoke to me was rude and inexcusable!!! He would not even look me in the eyes when he spoke to me and then quoted me a rate that was twice the price of what I could book myself using your website. I am a Gold member and have been for several years. Plus I just turned in the keys for a 35 days rental moments before he "helped me". I told him that the rate was not correct and he told me I was wrong. I told him I would just go to another location, and he said "Fine if you think you can do better yourself - go ahead," and the watched me walk out the door without any sort of indication that he cared he was losing another extended term rental. I literally walked out of the door and was able to pull up pricing on the Hertz website that was half the rate he quoted me. I could have booked it on the spot and walked back in the door and showed him the rate, but I honestly don't think I want to do business with people that don't value me or my time. I was referred to this location by my insurance company following a car accident. I tried for two days to get a rental car from them but kept getting told they were out of cars. I finally gave up and asked my insurance company to switch me to Enterprise, which they did and two hours later I had a car to drive. My advice is to avoid this location like the plague. See the other review here... We rented from this location at the first of March to take a trip. Picked up the car and was not overly impressed, but it served a purpose. On returning from our trip, we dropped the car off after hours and thought nothing else about it. I never received a final receipt but again I've rented from many companies in the past, and Hertz is a very reputable company so no worries right? Well, receive my Credit Card statement and noticed it was higher than expected. I checked the Hertz rental and found that I was charged $175.00 cleaning fee. I contacted Eric and immediately he became condescending. I should have notified them sooner of the billing and it would be easier to investigate. When I asked about not receiving an email receipt, He stated that it was their company policy not to email receipts (first I've heard of this). Then he stated that the only reason for the $175.00 charge would be if someone smoked in the car or if they found dog hair. Well, neither of those were issues with this rental, so then he said well maybe you had dog hair on your clothes and that got in the car!! Looking at the one previous comment here, this appears to be a racket that they are running at this location. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION!! and if you do, make sure that you are present when they close out your billing. DO NOT LET THE SCAM YOU!!! read more

I went to return the vehicle and they were going to provide a ride to the dealership afterwards. I got to the rental place and they had sent their driver away to the air port. They told me to drive the vehicle to the dealer and leave it with them. The gas tank was still showing full, probably .5 gallon total used between the gas station to the rental place and then to Adams Toyota. They charged my credit card for a 1/4 of a tank of gas... I called to disputed it and Tinaya just hung up on me. I then called back and talked to Eric the manager and he claims that he has a receipt for the gas fill up. He wants me to meet him at the gas station I filled up at to review the video footage in order to prove that it was filled up. Avoid renting from Hertz in Lee's Summit on Langsford Rd. I made my reservation in advance online via Hertz's website. No where on the website did it mention having to have a credit card upon pick up for $200 deposit. I received my email confirmation stating $0.00 due at the counter. Very misleading with me being a first time car renter. Honestly, I thought the deposit was included in my prepayment because it did say I would need to have my driver's license and card used to prepay when I pick the rental up. Me & my boyfriend went to pick the car up and was informed of the $200 deposit that would come off my debit card. Eric was HIGHLY unprofessional upon me telling him there was not $200 on my debit card to cover it. However, I did tell him I had cash on me to cover it. The ONLY option he offered was for me to call a 1-800 # for a refund. Eric said I would get the refund the same day. I get on the phone with my mother who was going to help with the deposit. I go back inside the office to ask if my mom can use her credit card to cover my deposit. Eric was extremely rude in telling me no that I would have to cancel this reservation and then do a whole other reservation in her name. By this time I'm extremely upset. I'm expressing how upset I am over the phone with my mother when Eric tells me to get out of his store. He tells me he's not going to do business with me. Mind you I've already paid for the car and am getting the deposit worked out. I call the 1-800 # given by Eric to see about my deposit options. After being hung up on twice I ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. Mind you NONE of these representatives speak very fluent English. The supervisors name was Warner. He did call me back to let me know I can deposit the $200 in my bank to use my debit card for the deposit. Yes!! This is great news!! Until I get back to the office and my debit card is declined because of my credit score. Wait?! No one told me my credit would be ran. So now Eric says my only option is to call the 1-800 # for refund. Again he did not offer any type of help with my situation. The refund process has been a fiasco in itself. I talked to 2 foreign representatives that we're supposed to start the refund process only to find out they did not. I FINALLY got to speak to someone who could actually help me. She said there was no notes or indication a refund was in process. I've been given the run around from every different person I talk to. My bank is willing to work with Hertz to release my refund sooner than the time frame Hertz is giving me but Hertz is refusing to send me any type of email confirmation they're processing a refund. Their customer service is not very helpful. All in all this is by far THE WORST experience renting a car and now I've missed my vacation because Hertz is holding my money hostage. This was the absolute worst rental car experience I've ever had in my life. I travel and rent cars often and I've never seen anything like this before. I reserved a mid-sized car beginning at 9:00am. I arrived to secure the rental at 10:25am. I was greeted with "Ma'am, this car was reserved for 9am." I responded in the affirmative, not sure what point was being made. The representative continued by saying "Well it's after 9am and we don't have a car for you." I explained that I didn't recall reading any policy to this effect on the website. Most rental car companies have a car available when you arrive, because the car was reserved and there are often travel-related delays with flights, transfers, etc. He told me that yes, there is a policy online. In the meantime, he shrugged his shoulders and told me to "write down" my phone number and they would call me IF they got a car in later in the day. I complied and left but internally I was LIVID. Being 1,000 miles away from home with no personal transportation is not acceptable when I've taken steps to reserve a car in advance. I was in town for a family funeral (U.S. veteran) and my grief was compounded by needing to ask various family members for rides around town instead of being able to travel independently. In addition, I later checked the Hertz online policy and it states that a reserved car will be held for 2 hours past the reservation time. I reserved for 9am and arrived at 10:25am. I was within the window. He LIED. And to add to the poor customer service, if my car had been given away, the prudent thing to do would have been to apologize and offer me a free upgrade. This did not happen. This was my first time attempting to do business with Hertz. I will NEVER patronize their company and I'm telling everyone I know NOT to rent from this company. read more

Avoid renting from the Lee's Summit Hertz location at all costs. The manager Eric deliberately tries to hide charges and will add a $175 cleaning fee when you turn the car in. In 40 years I've never had a rental car company charge to clean a rental on return. In this case the floor mats were dirty. This rental was arranged by our State Farm policy during repair of our car. When my wife picked up the car my wife was told she could have insurance for $154. She accepted. What was hidden in the fine print and not stated was the $154 was based on a daily rate for 7 days. The rental was for however long we needed for the body shop to repair our car. The shop and insurance agent stated that they arranged to cover the rental and kept renewing the rental for us for 29 days. When we turned the car in Eric promptly charged us over $800 for the insurance fee at a daily rate for 29 days plus a $175 cleaning fee. Use Enterprise in Lee's Summit and avoid the Hertz office at Don Kahan at all costs. read more

Eric was very pleasant to work with, he helped me with my last minute rental and even had the car cleaned upon my arrival.
