Everything was a step above a typical car rental experience, so they earned 5 stars. There was no wait at the counter and Pepa was friendly and quick to help me, even late in the evening on a Monday. Pepa also noticed hertz status and provided more recognition than I expected which was nice. The vehicle was a late model Toyota RAV4 in good shape and everything was clean and working Return was also a breeze the next night and most important, there were no extra unexpected charges or nickel and dining that you might get at a less reputable place. i arrived 45 minutes before reservation and the representative named Peppa was not accommodating and I was told I was early and I would need to wait till 6:30 pm as my reservation stated. He said he had no cars available and people might come before 6:30 and he would need to take care of them . No one in line they had 32 cars ready to go in lot up stairs and I waited to see if anyone came after me. Only one person did . I tried again at 5:55 after and was told maybe at 6:20 pm . Then he left I'm guessing he was getting off and didn't want to deal with my reservation. He said he was told my hertz not to sign out cars early . I have never heard a policy like that before especially since I was within 45 min. If my reservation. After Peppa left the desk I went up at 6:05 and spoke with a representative named Mark who helped me immediately. very polite and went out if his way to get my reservation taken care of. I do not recommend this business. I rented a car in September for 4 days. After returning the car and getting home I looked at my credit statement to find that I had been charged 9 separate transactions for the same amount. I have tried contacting the manager to fix the mistake and I was unable to get help. Justin was very rude and didn't want to be bothered. I have left several messages and sent emails. No one will help me. I am now going to the BBB in anchorage to report them. Please save yourself the trouble and rent a car somewhere else. Do not rent from this Hertz! First car they gave me had to be returned due to an engine light going on for an oil change. This was three hours out of our vacation, that we will not get back. The second issue which is much more frustrating was the replacement car gave me they gave me had a crack in the windshield. This crack was in the lower part of the windshield and did not notice it until I left the garage. I took a picture immediately, and tried to call the location to let them know. I have the time stamped picture, and the eight times I tried to call them that afternoon. After two months they are trying to file a claim on my insurance. They are running a scam. Beware! read more

My flight arrived a little early and Hertz would not honor my Presidents Circle status for upgrades and would only provide a mid-size car unless I wait another 45 minutes for their computer system to release my reservation. If this is how they treat over a decade of loyalty and highest loyalty status, perhaps I should take my $30,000 in business rentals to another company instead? Well after 30 mutess on the phone to Hertz Corporate. They would not give me anything but some extra rewards points and rental credit. HOWEVER! After getting off the phone with Corporate... and no progress. I approached the counter to discuss the situation. The staff was phenomenal! They went above and beyond to make it right and upgraded me to a Chevy Tahoe! It seemed gloomy at first, but resulted in a very positive experience with an awesome staff who really understood customer service. Possibly the most frustrating rental experience I've ever had, and I travel nearly weekly! Arrived early and was told that I would need to pay an extra $50 for early pickup. Isn't that why I put my airline info into the reservation? System is supposed to update arrival timing! I should have started getting worried. Strike #1 The gentleman helping me clearly was new (giving him the benefit of the doubt?), so was kind of useless. Is this the guy you want working the Gold counter? He proceeded to take three deposits, because there was a system glitch(?) to the toon of $1500. More than double the total cost of the reservation. But "don't worry," they will be refunded promptly this week. Really? Strike #2 My rental rate, via the company's leisure rate (CDP) includes the insurance. He couldn't find it but was happy to charge me extra for it. Huh? That's the point of the negotiated corporate program! He couldn't figure it out and after a 40 minute "experience," I took the car because we had a four hour drive to Homer that evening. Strike #3 I called corporate Hertz for help but since this location is a franchisee, they couldn't help and recommended calling the location directly. I did, of course, and they were unable to change anything without me coming in (and paying more). Uh, I'm 4+ hours away and it is supposed to be included! Thankfully, I've had no issues with the vehicle yet, but I'm sure if there is, these folks will try to grind ever possible cent and ounce of joy, out of me. I paid $511 in full prior to our trip for a rental car. Gave my credit card when I got there for a deposit then was charged $303 a week after I dropped it off. I called and was told that dollar/thrifty car rental just purchased hertz and that I would need to contact Priceline who I made the reservation through for a refund. Called them and was told I needed to contact hertz for the refund. This has been going on for 2 weeks and they keep telling me they will look into it and call me back in 30 minutes. I still have to call every day because no one will return my call. The buck keeps getting passed and no one seems to be the party who is responsible for the mix up. Rent somewhere else and save yourself the weeks of hassle. My issue is still not resolved. As I type this ive been on hold for 27 minutes. read more

Rented from the Anchorage Airport Location. Not really a Hertz. Avoid if possible. I reserved a car through Hertz website for this location months in advance. I used points for a week and was paying the rest of the time with cash. When I showed to pick up my reservation, they informed me they don't accept Hertz points and charged me full price. They are basically a Dollar shop with a Hertz sign. They do not take points, care about status, or follow any Hertz corporate policies. Your receipt does not show up at Hertz.com and you cannot manage your reservation through the normal Hertz processes. Their deposit is $500 and they will try to blame you for pre existing damage on the car. Luckily I took a bunch of photos and pressed to get the damage form signed before I left with the car. Mark everything on that form. I highly recommend you rent with someone else. The real business pretending to be Hertz is "Floyd & Sons Inc." read more

I am as surprised as you are about rating a car rental company a 5. I have had some pretty negative experiences when it comes to car rentals and was amazed at how easy Hertz was to work with. I booked my rental car online a month or so before arriving. When we arrived at the rental counter after retrieving our bags there was few people already at the counter and one person in front of us. I blame that on my using of the bathroom between getting our bags and walking to the counter. Anyhow, we only had to wait a minute or so before we were helped. The man helping us was friendly and got us in and out very fast. There were no surprise charges or shadiness whatsoever! Our car was clean and ready and we were on the road in minutes. I'm very disappointed and I feel like I've been scammed. I rented a car with them, I booked online and I payed at the rent a car place, then I returned the car and everything was good. I payed with a credit card the same amount that it appears in the bill (the insurance was included). Days after, I saw on my bank account that they charged me another amount, I contacted with them about what happened, if they saw anything wrong on the car and I received an email apologizing for charging extra charges. I asked them about that extra charges but they didn't reply me back... I didn't sign for any extra, if the car was in good conditions (like it was, one employee checked it when I returned it) they cannot charge any that is not in the contract. So it's been a week that I'm trying to contact with somebody but nobody is replying... so no, I don't recommend this place because it's a totally scam. They take advantage from you because you are not longer in the country to charge you extras that you didn't know about it, you didn't sign for that and you didn't allow them to take from your bank account read more

This is a privately owned Hertz. They also own Dollar and Thrifty rental. The manager, Junior, is very rude and not helpful. They charge drop fees that are not on the rental agreement from Hertz.com. When questioned about these charges Junior said "be glad I'm not charging you $1000". read more

SHOULD CHANGE THEIR NAME TO "HURTS RENT-A-FRUSTRATION" Every time I make a car reservation Hertz Anchorage finds new and creative ways to screw it up. They're really evil geniuses at it. Cover your ears children.... Whether it's reserving the wrong car, telling you wrong return times or not at all, telling you your rental is 2 days...no 3 days...no 4 days all in the same phone call, or promising your car has GPS and then finding out that's not true at all. Geniuses, really! If you DO get the local Hertz Anchorage store manager he'll tell you he "doesn't really use computers" in the 21st century and will have your reservation changed by the girl who comes in later. So no confirmation number or e-mail, no call back, no way to later confirm how the reservation was never changed at all? Uh, thanks I guess? Need to solve a problem at the local office? Forget it. Because rep "Marco" doesn't speak English well enough to understand (and worse yet, doesn't know what he's talking about) and asking for a supervisor just dumps you to the 1-800 number where, you guessed it...no one speaks English either. I'm talking infinite hold times, on a phone line that crackles and hisses like the fourth of July. To be bounced around departments among yet more people for whom English is a foreign language. Want to make a simple change like the name of the person picking up the car? Five minutes right? Oh noooooooo, you can't just call the 1-800 number and make a change... you'll need to make an entirely NEW reservation which will involve multiple calls, multiple agents, several departments and finally a signed and dated letter on company letterhead. Wait.... WTF? Nobody could be stupid enough to try and run a company this way. It HAS to be designed evil. This isn't just one occurrence (which might be forgivable) but repeated interactions with Hertz all turning out the same way. It's takes a special level of evil genius to screw over customers like this with consistency. I'd say Hertz corporate fired every English speaking person of competence in order to save money... but it must have cost Hertz a fortune to create this Kafkaesque nightmare and hire this many evil creative geniuses to gleefully enforce it. As a whole the experience was good: it was low season and late when I came in, there is just a short walk from the airport terminal in a tunnel to get to the many car counters (all crammed in a small space!), they had my stuff ready to go and I just took off. There is no downstairs attendant when I came or went. The car was decent and did the job despite icy roads, it wasn't too hard. Return was another story: following the directions for the signs, there was no parking! I had to go a wrong way turn to find a place that had a spot. There was nobody downstairs to guide you. I got upstairs and they asked my milage: I had no idea but we had taken a picture of the dashboard and it was set to to a trip milage, and we had no idea how to get the real milage, the lady seemed displeased. Suddenly I realized I forgot to top off the tank, I offered to go fill it but she said it was "too late, I already checked you in" followed by a charge of $100 for gas (1/4 tank empty!) without chance to discuss. I was stunned and didn't have time to argue. The next day I looked and she charged me for 2/3 of a tank, when only 1/4 was empty. I called customer service and after a few calls we refunded me $65 which was acceptable. They need better clear communication on how to return the cars and actual verification of gas and milage. Addendum: to their credit the manager called after reviewing my experience on the Hertz survey and hopefully would have resolved it the same way. read more
