So I stopped in to Hertz in Asheville NC today because I had a misfortunate circumstance and did not have a rental car. Even though I was able to see online that thru a third-party (Expedia), I could get a rental car for $44 per day. The person, who seemed like the manager, told me that instead it would be $109 a day because I was a "walk up". And he said "you can book it with the third-party on Expedia but you'll have to wait 45 minutes to an hour before we can have your car ready". Then he told me that the reason that it was $109 is that the price included the insurance which I didn't have an option to take or not take. I certainly felt like they were getting compensated based on whatever they could rip somebody off for. I've usually been a Hertz customer, but this will be my last time with hertz. Maybe they gained $50 on this transaction, but they're gonna lose a lot more. read more

Caution: be very careful with this branch of Hertz. They lied about applying a AAA membership discount, saying that while they couldn't enter the discount on the computers there, customer service was very good and would take of it for me. So, I accepted the car. Since then, despite repeated requests, customer service has been unwilling to provide the discount, saying only that "it's against their policy". So, be careful. If you're expecting a AAA discount, be sure you have it all lined up before you get to the desk. I've never experienced this with Hertz before, so I suspect it's a revenue-enhancement strategy with this particular branch. Everything else was great; and the staff is very nice. read more

Great service! I originally had booked with a Hertz location outside the airport (about 20 minutes out). I just got off the plane and received a call from that location stating they have NO vehicles left. I don't know how this is possible, but what can I do. So I went up to the Hertz service desk (in the airport) to speak with the young lady and explained to her my situation. She immediately got on the phone and called the other location. She had transferred my reservation to the airport Hertz location AND honored the price! I couldn't believe how friendly and helpful the representative was. She literally saved my day and my trip from disaster. AND.... She hooked me up with a SWEET A$$ ride! Brand new 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sahara hardtop 4-door electric hybrid. FYI- The reason why I booked outside the airport, because it was way cheaper. A quick Uber ride to and from the location would still be a significant value in savings. TIP- I urge you to shop around just outside the airport, or by your hotel. Be cognizant with the location and demand of vehicles. READ THIS BEFORE renting a car from the Ashville Airport Herrz and Dollar Rent a Car.. I'll be brief. I only use debit cards... I read the published rules on the Hertz website. They excepted my prepaid car rental debit purchase online. Once at the counter, they accepted my Debit card to hold money due to me using a debit card... as noted in their rules. I was then advised that they cannot and do not take a debit card! They left us without a car at 10:00 at night. Withdrew hundreds from my bank account and would not credit me back! They then gave me a card to call the independent owner. HertzSC and... of course... no answer. We had a 2-5 hour drive up into the mountains and had to cancel our night that has zero refund. I do not leave reviews, but unfortunately I feel compelled in this instance. I reserved my hertz car via priceline with the basic collision protection. I prepaid for the reservation ad my coverage online. At the counter when I went to pick up my car, I clarified with the counter rep that I had purchased the collision coverage through priceline when I reserved the car. She seemed confused by this, and said something about not being able to see reservation parameters in their system. I felt the issue was clarified, picked up my car, and drove off. I dropped the car back a few days later with no issues. A few days later I received a bill for $125. I spent a week calling the location and hertz HQ. HQ told me its a private location and they cant help. The location itself just didnt pick up my calls. I spoke with one person who told me a manager (Andrew) would call me back. Never happened. Hertz finally responded to my online complaint about a week later. They said the issue was resolved and nothing could be done, sticking me with the added charge. So I had an erroneous charge billed to my account, and the company says they cant do anything. Do yourself a favor and use another company. read more

I'm a Gold Plus member and had to wait in a line that stretched past the baggage carousels because there was only one agent working the counter. It took 30 minutes in line and 30 seconds at the counter for the agent to look up my reservation and hand me keys to the car, which were on the counter. I wasn't even at the counter for more than one minute but had to wait in a line for 30 minutes. No Gold Plus line. No Gold Plus sign. WTF?! If I could give zero stars I would. Arrived on Saturday, July 22 around 3pm to be greeted with a flat, " we don't have any cars and it could be a several hour wait." Which was then followed with, "this happens all the time and corporate doesn't care." I checked earlier in the day and Hertz had vans for rent at a cheaper rate. We had to place our name on a list and be near the desk to hear it called. Watch the Seinfeld episode about the same thing! However, this wasn't funny traveling with a party of 7 of which three kids age 11. Asheville airport is SMALL and with this issue the cramped baggage area was full with multiple families waiting on a car. Due to this issue all the other car rental companies had rented their cars for a family of our size. Corporate wasn't responsive and after waiting 2.4 hours we got a dirty van with a check engine light on as an oil change was needed. We took the van as we didn't want to wait longer. They provided a $50 credit for the wait. Corporate later offered points to my account. I will NEVER use Hertz again unless that is the only company at the airport. I would not recommend working for Hertz in Asheville as the employees clearly don't feel valued and that is passed on to the consumer. read more

We booked our car 10mo in advance. On arrival, we waited just shy of 2hrs beyond our reservation time to get a car. Staff explained that they were still waiting on returns & would get them out as soon as they were checked in & cleaned. We were, in turn, late for our meet up to check-in. We were concerned that, given the current rental car situation, we may not even have a car on arrival. So, 2hrs seemed a fair compromise. We also locked in at 1/3 the current rate & it was honored (so far as I can tell thus far) The car was as booked, clean & in great condition. I truly feel worse for the staff than I do for us. We came to Asheville North Carolina to drive into the great Smoky mountains in December and early January only to realize that when we rented our car it was an economy car. If you've never driven in the mountains you can't drive in the mountains with an economy sedan you need a 4x4 SUV or truck. So after we're driving we explained our destinations to Machelleand she explained that we would not be able to get up the mountains in a regular car we would need 4x4. Unfortunately they did not have any 4x4s or trucks in stock however she said if we called the next day she would save us one. We had a van rental reserved for 12. After waiting in line until 1245 we were told that they had no minivans available and that it would 40 more minutes. They offered $120 in compensation. Which was, at that point, we thought reasonable. When we asked why our reservation hadn't been honored we were rudely asked "had we seen the line?" that we had just waited in. After waiting another hour and inquiring again, we were given a key and we went downstairs. As soon as we opened the vehicle we smelled smoke. When we asked about it they said they knew there was a smoke smell in the vehicle but that it was hard to get out and that "some people would have accepted it". We asked if this smell was documented anywhere and we're told "no". At this point we asked to speak to a manager and were told she wouldn't speak with us and that they didn't know where she was. The agents told us to leave with the new car without a modified rental contract, which would have left us with no proof that we had legal rights to be in the car if we were pulled over. We spent the next 40 minutes waiting for someone who had the access rights to change the rental contract. 3 hours after our reservation we were finally given a car. I should mention that we are traveling with our 7 month old and that I was a breastfeeding mother with no access to food in the airport;Three hours was not an inconsequential amount of time. When we asked for further compensation for the additional 1.5 hour (3 hour total) wait and the attempt to give us a smoky car with our infant, we were told that was not possible. And again that the manager was not on site. We were also told that the manager would call us, which she did not do. read more

I rented a car here for a three-day period in the fall and (besides a 30-minute delay before they had a vehicle available for us) everything went smoothly. Then a full month after I returned the car, they charged my credit card for $107 with no explanation! After I tried in vain to get in touch with them for a week, I was told that it was a late fee for returning the car four hours late -- but I didn't return the car late! Further attempts on my part to contact management to dispute this were entirely ignored. My credit card company won't get involved because I can't prove that I did return the car on time. Hertz wouldn't do anything about it because it's a franchise. I decided to create a yelp account specifically to leave this review, as it seems I have no further recourse against this spurious charge. As bad as it is for a business to charge a customer $100 with no explanation after a month delay, other reviews suggest I got off lucky. There's clearly a pattern here, and somebody even received a letter informing them that the franchise was going to charge them with grand theft auto! Was hit while driving a car I rented here for a road trip, returned to this location and spoke to Larry at the front counter. Had made another reservation and was told via his horrible customer service that their policy was not to rent another vehicle until their claim is settled. When asking for a manager was told I needed to wait until tomorrow for them to return. When asked if corporate could help was told they're unaffiliated and the new reservation I made won't matter and he doesn't have any cars anyways. Larry then threatened to have me removed from the building if I didn't leave the counter when I asked for assistance with the claim and crashed rental. I have never been so upset as I was yesterday when I was stranded at the Asheville airport by Hertz. I've been a Gold Member for years, with countless positive rental experiences with Hertz. However, yesterday I was denied a reserved rental by the counter agent because their scanner couldn't read the magnetic stripe on the back of my driver's license. I explained that I've been a customer for years, and that Hertz has all my information on file. Not to mention he was holding my valid driver's license in his hand. He explained very rudely that it was "policy" that he couldn't allow my reserved rental. I asked him what I was supposed to do, as we were starting our vacation, and now had no car. Weird how Hertz Asheville hasn't ended up in court for price gouging and basically extorting their customers. Hands down the WORST experience I have ever had with any company EVER. I have never in my life seen the level of incompetence that Asheville Hertz has to offer its residents. I rented a car through Asheville Hertz last year. After I picked the car up, I realized I needed to change my drop off location. I tried to call the Asheville location... 5 different times. I then called Hertz corporate. I was told by Hertz corporate reps on the phone that even they couldn't reach the Asheville office (weird, because it was during work hours. If a franchise can't reach one of its locations, that signals a huge problem to me). I was told by Hertz corporate that I could return the car to the Raleigh location without extra fees. I returned the car to the Raleigh location. I had the Raleigh rep confirm there would be no extra charge, waiting at their office at least 45 minutes. Almost 2 months later, I get a bill in the mail. For almost $500 from Hertz Asheville. I was confused. I had not one but two Hertz reps (one of them corporate) confirm I would not be charged anything extra. After a lot of back and forth, Hertz corporate claimed that the Asheville location is actually independently owned so I would have to take the bill up with them. Upon calling Hertz Asheville, I was basically told "too bad" and hung up on by the rep. I was told I was annoying the manager and that I was unable to speak with her. What a joke. Eventually, I got in touch with their billing department. I told them my story, and they said I still needed to pay up. I offered a payment plan, and that I was unable to pay them $500 up front with no notice. They refused. All in all; this experience was a total joke. I will never be renting with Hertz again... take this warning and the many, many reviews before mine that all tell the same story: Hertz are thieves.
