I was charged for fuel even though I dropped off the vehicle with 3/4 of a tank, which was the exact amount of gas that was stated in the rental agreement that I fill the tank to upon dropoff. Also the car lot was completely full of other vehicles on Sunday night making it impossible to drop off the vehicle; I had to turn in the vehicle the following morning which was very inconvenient. When I did drop the car off the next morning I asked one of the Hertz employees if I was going to be charged an extra day because of the problem with dropoff and she said "We'll work with you" as if it was a negotiation; a simple yes or no answer would've sufficed. Very bad experience! I've booked a car on Hertz's website for 12 p.m...I arrived at 12h05 in the company. First one guy of the company was very unpleasant and told me that he could not give my car because the company was closed. Then I saw a manager who told me that actually they could not give me my car because they don't have one available. Thus she makes me understand that booking a car on the internet is useless. Actually you book on the internet but the car is not booked...amazing... To sum up I don't get my car and people in the store are really unpleasant. I came into hertz at 8:30 to pick up a car that my insurance company had already ordered for me. I was in a hurry to get this rental car because i run a small construction business and i need a car to meet my clients. It took 2 hrs for them to give me the car. Keep in mind that the entire lot was full of cars. Several employees were working at the time. I had to call the company itself to complain about how long I've been waiting. As soon as the employees received a call from hertz about my waiting time , the employees almost immediately found the car that's been waiting for me, but that's not the best part. They had to clean the car for me! And that took another hour. Once i finally got the keys and into the car i noticed that they didnt even clean it!!! And the car was parked onto the fence and was scratched by the employees!!! I took video before and after i got into the car because if they say anything is my fault, I'll have proof that any damage on the car is from hertz's own incompetent workers. I will never rent from hertz again and im changing my insurance company aswell because while i was waiting, i lost 2 clients of mine because i couldnt get to them in time. Overall my experience was extremely awful. Sidenote: every white or asian client that they had ....magically seemed to get very fast service. Every single white or asian person that came in after me all left hours before me. Didn't want to pull out the race card at all especially since many of the workers were black but come on. This review is long over due. I've used this location many times in the last four years due to my car having to go into the shop. So I've come in frustrated but always left with a smile on my face. My first experience was with Jason. He is the calmest person I have ever encountered. You have to understand this location to really appreciate his demeanor. There is always a line of people out the door no matter what time or day you come in. There are two types of people that come in the thankful they could get a car or the pissed off at life in general folks. Over the years I've seen Jason deal with everything from a man who runs into the office screaming he needs his child's 600.00 specially made car seat that he left in the rental two days ago. So you dropped off the car and you missed a large car seat? You never called to report it missing. And you said when you left here you and your family left in another car - so what was your child sitting in? NEXT! Or the time the guy didn't want to use his credit card for the deposit nor did he want to use his debit card. So they're just supposed to give you a vehicle on trust?! NEXT! So his calmness is amazing to watch because he is able to somewhat deescalate the situation by not reacting to it in the same loud tone. Jason remembers everyone. He will chat you up about something that you talked about the time before you were there which is bloody incredible if you think about it. With all the people that go thru that office he can still connect with you. Jason is truly invested in what he does and it shows with his actions and words. The last two times I've had to use a rental I've had the pleasure of working with either Markesha or Janissa. Both incredibly welcoming. Always ask how your day is going. Always have smiles on their faces. And again with the wide range of personalities that come into this place, I don't know how they do it. Last Thursday, I went into return my car when I walked in to a man yelling and calling Markesha all kinds of profanities. I'm not sure if he was renting or returning but he was mad because he wasn't going to fill up his rental with gas even though he was going/had received it full. Wtf! Hertz is a business. They are giving out gas for free! He was beyond arrogant and I would have called the police as NO ONE deserves to be talked to or treated in that manner. (And hopefully Hertz has banned him) I take this moment to apologize to Markesha and Janissa as I should have said something but I froze in disgust and then to be honest I was scared as people like him can do the unthinkable in a moment. Thank goodness he left. During that entire tirade neither Markesha nor Janissa raised their voice nor spoke down to the man. They continued to explain the company policy and it was as if he could care less that he was going to shout and abuse the young ladies til they gave in. And i applaud them for keeping their cool and not giving in. As the moment you bend the rules for someone especially like him, you lose control of your business and everyone expects it their way. This location is run by an amazing group of people. Yeah things happen with cars but that's more a Hertz corporate issue not the office employees. I say thank you to Jason who has seen me thru some of my hardest days as I was going thru massive medical problems along with car issues he was always overly kind and worried about me as another human being not just customer. Markesha and Janissa - you two young ladies impress me every time I see you. Your strong business and work ethic, the kindness you extend even to people who are not worthy by how they treat you. I hope Hertz appreciates and understands what a treasure they have in you both. And to the rest of the Hertz staff at this location - I understand what you have to deal with first hand and yet you do it with pride and show back up everyday (another great fact, there is no high turn over here which speaks to how Jason leads his staff). I thank you for always helping me when I'm in need of a vehicle but even more - thank you for always being so thoughtful and kind to me. (Side note - take most of the complaints with a grain of salt. Recently rented a car here. It was very busy Labor Day weekend and the staff was doing the best they could but tip for anyone renting: document the gas level before you leave with your car. I chose to return the car with the gas level the same as when I left which was half full. When I got my statement the next day they had charged me $71 to fill the tank to full. Because I didn't have evidence that the gas tank was half-full I got stuck with paying the fee. Buyer beware! read more

One of the worst examples of customer service I've ever experienced. When I walked in, the woman at the service counter was already rudely explaining to another customer that reserving a car doesn't mean you're going to get one. When it was my turn, I was told that I was too early for my pick-up, and that I'd have to wait two hours. I explained that I was sent a courtesy email by Hertz to remind me of my reservation with an opportunity to modify the reservation. I explained that I modified the reservation for the earlier pick-up. Her response was a curt "I didn't send you any emails," and then to sarcastically hold up her clip board showing me her print-out with my original reservation. I made a reservation at this Hertz, called and spoke with Jason Casaccia to confirm my reservation and that I could rent with my debit card was told I could if I added my AAA card to the reservation. I did this and when I went to pick up my rental I was told I could not rent with my debit card! Now my trip is delayed. Poor misinformed customer service. Now I am trying to get my money back from my reservation which is on the debit card they refused to let me rent with! Spoke with one person, now on hold with the next person... The driver was 1 hour late in spite of 3 calls to the office. He had no phone, no GPS, and the office gave him the incorrect spelling of my street. The reception person was unapologetic and a little rude. In spite of requesting a different car, we got one key (for two drivers) and a car that had no auto lock (each time you wanted to unlock the back right, you had to open the front left and crawl across the car inside). Counts rental car charges by calendar day, so I was charged for a full extra day. Spoke with the manager (after multiple attempts, 30 min on hold, no call-back despite request). The manager was unsympathetic and would not credit the extra day of charges despite the lack of disclosure at the time of rental. PS. Wait time was 40 min to pick up the car in the evening. Rent from enterprise on San Pablo ave if you have a choice. They are always friendly and courteous and very thorough in paperwork and agreements up front :) read more

I was renting two cars in a row in 2 days, and was served by the same team of staff. Nikki was really helpful and patient in troubleshooting and correcting the details of my order when the amount came up to $500+ instead of the $300+ that I was supposed to pay. I thought that they'd just forget it and tell me that my discount no longer worked. I've been renting at this Hertz outlet for multiple times now, and each time I've been picked up and dropped off by very friendly people as well! My insurance routed me to them, so I did not choose them. I tried to call this branch to verify the reservation that my insurance set up, but they apparently forgot to turn on their phones, so my call kept being routed to the national reservation line. I tried calling them multiple times between 9am and 9:16, and the national line kept saying "well they just opened, maybe they forgot to unforward the line?" and couldn't help me. Terrible terrible customer service. If I could give zero stars I would. I was given the choice of using hertz by the at fault party's insurance provider to get my rental vehicle while my own car was in the shop for repairs. Took 45 minutes for a pick up at the auto body shop even with advance notice. Annoying considering the shop is just a 3 minute drive, away, but once I got there, I got my rents quick and painless. They asked me if I wanted LDWI (low damage waiver instance. I took their suggestion as I was unsure if my own insurance, Geico, would cover any possible damages. After checking out, they directed me to the car I was renting by pointing at it rather than actually walking me to the car. Annoying, since in a lot of vehicles, it's hard to instantly find what you were directed to. It wasn't even that busy, with just 2-3 people behind me. Before I went out the door, I asked her if it was ok to go and if I was all set. She quickly replied with a yes and handed me the keys. Found out that geico does cover rental insurance rhe next day. I then walk in and ask for the low damage insurance to be removed. The rep helping me (Joe) obliged and then told me he had to do an inspection before the process was completed. I, ruining this was harmless, obliged. Then, as soon as we got to the rental vehicle (Hyundai accent), he instantly changed his demeanor and got very confrontational. He started pointing out small scratches and paint marks everywhere. He immediately blamed me for all of them, even though I had only rented the vehicle for a day and knew for a fact no damage was incurred while I drived. I gave him my explanation but he just wouldn't listen. He insisted that I was trying to lie my way out of damages and that I was trying to fool him since the paint and scratches were supposedly "fresh". He asked me if I had someone help me do an inspection before leaving the lot. I told him that I was unaware an inspection was required and told him that it was hertz job,not mine, to ensure an inspection by a rep took place before the car leaves the lot. Joe wouldn't take any of it. He kept on insisting I caused the damages and that I was trying to fool him since he himself always makes sure an inspection is done before the car leaves the lot, especially since he's experienced and was on loan from the San Francisco location. He also mentioned that there was no way for me to prove I hadn't done the damages without an inspection. At this point, I was furious. He treated me with no respect and clearly thought himself to be an expert and as such, above my standing. He would not listen, he did not listen and even mentioned he tries to take the customers side most of the time but clearly he was lying. He had the nerve to insist I was lying, even though I told him he proper protocol was not followed and it was hertz fault and the rep who handled me yesterday's fault that they didn't do an inspection or even tell me an inspection was needed before driving off. After he had heard enough of my reasoning, he asked me to go and basically forced me to sign a claims form insisting I had done the damage. He had no qualms, and said I'll be fine since I was still covered by their low damage insurance that day. I as a customer, however, do not want to be blamed and defamed for any damages. False accusations are damaging even if I don't have to pay any cash. Midway through filling out the claims form, he decided to look and see on the computer if an inspection had actually taken place before I got my keys to the rental. He disxovered that no inspection had taken place and I had not signed any waivers or forms aside from the credit card deposit signature. He then asked his co-workers, who was rude to me as wel, if the fault lies with the customer or the employees if no inspection had been done. She told him that it was the fault of the employees. After he heard that, he told me I could stop signing the forms, as I was not at fault. Even after this whole fiasco, and how poorly he treated me, with false accusations, he chose not to apologize. He was not apologetic. He was not sorry, even after I was free to go. This is unacceptable. Hertz, shame on your employee Joe and shame on you for trying to blame the customer without following the proper protocol and procedure. I will avoid hertz and tell everyone I know to avoid hertz from now on. I was ridiculed, defamed, and hurt without any evidence. read more

You would expect the manager to at least help fix any problem or give you a explanation to why there is a problem but NOPE she makes things worse, she is really rude. Stay away from this place! They are fraudulent. I specifically stated that there was only a 1/4 tank of gas in the car when I picked it up at their downtown Oakland site (there was notation verifying this on the contract from the salesperson in Oakland--they rented it to me with a contract that said the tank was half-full, but when I started the engine, it registered as only a quarter full--hmmm....forcing me to go back in and say there was an error, which they "acknowledged w/notation on my contract). At the Albany site, the woman acknowledged this too, and unbeknownst to me they went ahead and billed me for $27.00 for gas and fuel tax! Unfortunately, I did not check the receipt closely. I called and spoke with "Jacari" yesterday, and he was anything but helpful. Pretty outrageous. First, I ordered to be picked up from University & San Pablo, which is 15min walking from this location and they told me that they will come for sure, no need to take the bus or so. Came here to get a rental car while my car was in the shop. I thought everything would be covered by the insurance of the guy who hit my car so I thought why not take advantage of a free rental to get around. I wish I hadn't rented a car from Hertz and just took the bus instead. The whole rental process was not well explained to me and I felt like there were hidden charges and they were trying to rush me out the door without knowing what I was getting into. They were supposed to give me a car of equal size and class to my car, but I got something much smaller and crappier, and it was really dirty - I could barely see out the windshield at night. They also only gave me the tank 3/4 full, but I had to fill it up before returning it to avoid getting hit with more charges. Finally they pretty much refused to let me take the car without buying their insurance, so I ended up paying $11/day which adds up fast! Lastly, they never explained that although the car rental charges are done in 24 hour increments, the insurance is by calendar days so I got charged for one more day than I had expected. I do however have to point out the facts. I am the "big black guy" and on the day in question I clocked out at 6:25pm. We do close at 6pm and although I would love the overtime, we have closing procedures and my fellow employees as well as myself have other obligations like picking up children from daycare, that have to be done after work. Once again, I apologize but we were indeed closed for almost a half hour if you saw me driving off the lot, and if I seemed to be in a hurry, please understand that It had nothing to do with you or your rental. Way understaffed. Long, long wait for pickup & return. All one line, so for what would be a quick return i was in line behind renters who didnt know what they were doing. (I'm used to airport rentals - this was much less organized & many renters were inexperienced.) Only when someone asked the guy cleaning returns did he tell us we could do it airport style, drop & get receipt mailed. But there was no drop box or system like you find in an airport. DONT GO HERE!!! I don't generally write reviews. A product or service has to be exceptionally good or absolutely horrible for me to take the time to write a review. This rental location is BY FAR THE WORST I have ever had the misfortune to use. (I travel a lot and have rented many cars.) I bought the insurance (I was pretty sure they were lying when they told me that most insurances companies no longer cover rental vehicles) with the caveat that I would be able to come back and have the fee refunded if I contacted my insurance and I was covered under my policy. AAA does cover rental cars. I came back to return the insurance that they had sold me (fraudulently). But when I returned, the bored, insulting and petulant agent at the counter told me that I would have to return the car, paying additional fees, then re-reserve another car (and this time they wouldn't honor the discount coupon that was included with the original reservation). I called corporate and a very nice woman asked to speak to the kiosk agent directly to fix the situation. She was very apologetic to be and very irritated with the agent. The agent hung up on her, still insisting that she wouldn't issue a refund and because "it wasn't their policy". Odd. Since it seemed to be the policy of Hertz corporate. After seeing that I was perfectly happy to stay on the phone until a corporate agent walked her through the process, she called her boss who told her to issue the refund and then taught her how to do it (at this point, I've been dealing with this completely unnecessary hassle for 45 minutes). She never apologized for the fact that she didn't know how to do her job and was very rude as if I were personally putting her out. Then I mentioned that the key (battery operated) wasn't working. She said it was because the battery was dead. Then stared at me. I asked if she had a replacement battery. She said no, they didn't have any. Seriously? It wasn't a huge deal but after her attitude for the past 45 minutes it was just too stupid. The whole place is dirty and unprofessional, the staff is untrained and rude and they don't even rent fully functioning vehicles. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. POTENTIAL SCAM? READ ON AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. I had the unfortunate experience of being in an accident, where someone hit my car. This resulted in having to get a rental car while my car was being fixed. The body shop was in Berkeley near 1061 San Pablo Avenue where the Hertz I chose was located. The initial process of getting the rental car at Hertz was not bad considering I went early in the morning (8-830 AM). Things went smooth in terms of getting the contracts prepared and choosing a car. I clarified with the lady attending to me that I wanted to be assured that I would not be having to come out of pocket for any of the costs (except for Gas) due to the fact that the lady who hit my car was having her insurance cover the rental costs. She clearly assured me that I would not be coming out of pocket for any of the costs. After choosing a car and reviewing the terms of the contract, the attendant offered me additional insurance services (Lost Damage Waiver) which I clearly denied (due to having full coverage on my own insurance). After everything was all said and done I was printed a contract that clearly showed my denial of the additional services including the Lost Damage Waiver insurance. One week later after returning the car I was charged a $170 fee for a Lost Damage Waiver. After calling in to Hertz in Berkeley to question this suspicious charge, the lady attending to me (the same lady who helped me in the beginning) claimed that I SIGNED for the insurance and it was on the system. This led me to ask to talk to the manager , Jason. Once talking to him he also claimed that on his system it said I had signed for this insurance. After clarifying with him that I had a receipt with it clearly stating I declined these services, his response was "I understand where you are coming from but you have to understand this is a "he said", "she said" scenario and the receipt you have may be just an estimate". So now i'm being told that the contract I SIGNED in my hand is an estimate (which even if it was an estimate stated I had declined any additional services). Afterwards Jason told me that he would send the claim to the customer services, but that it ran the risk of being declined because I had "SIGNED" for the additional services and I would have to wait about 1 week or more to hear for a response. He didn't even offer to review the physical copy of my receipt and relied on what was supposedly his system. Afterwards I took matters into my own hands, I contacted customer services and they asked me to fax over the receipt. After 2 days they were able to refund me my money. So obviously it was clear that my "estimate" was an actual contract, which customer services was able to determine was correct, and whatever Jason and his staff had on their system was false and incorrect. After everything that happened, this experience leads me to believe that my contract was altered after I had left the car lot without being notified. I believe this may have happened because the staff assumed i would not check my contract because they knew the insurance covering me would cover the costs and tried to pull a fast one by adding additional services. Unfortunately for the Hertz staff, the lady's insurance who was covering me did not cover the additional (Hertz) Lost Damage Waiver insurance service, which ended up charging my credit card for the Lost Damage waiver fee, which resulted in me finding out my contract was changed. SO FOR ANYONE WHO IS GOING TO RENT FROM HERTZ WHETHER YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT YOURSELF OR YOU'RE BEING COVERED BY INSURANCE PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CONTRACT BECAUSE THE STAFF MAY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU TRUSTING WHAT THEY PUT ON THEIR SYSTEM. THEY SEEM VERY HELPFUL IN THE BEGINNING BUT TURN THEIR BACK ON YOU WHEN THEY ARE CAUGHT MAKING A MISTAKE. A VERY SKETCHY SCAM THEY TRIED TO PULL ON ME, AND WHO KNOWS HOW MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS. Worst service ever! The office was dirty and smelled like a combination of cheap cologne and a urinal. There was only one agent attending the sales desk, who failed to acknowledge my presence for at least five minutes. It was at least another five before being assisted by a fellow who came out of the restroom, tucking his shirt into his pants as he rounded the desk. The address they had on file for me was incorrect, I was listed as requesting gas and insurance services (not), and they did not have the class of car I reserved weeks prior. The agent, who seemed extremely disinterested in helping me, was not apologetic and did not offer me an upgrade. The car I ended up with had not been cleaned and the registration was expired. Returning the car was also a trying experience, as there were not enough agents to assist with the line of customers and there were mysterious fees added onto my bill, which took a considerable effort for the agent to resolve. The entire return process took about half an hour. This summary does not even cover all the challenges of this experience, but I'm sure you get the picture. My husband and I have rented cars a number of times, from a number of companies. Never before have we received such poor or complicated service. read more

I will never ever in life rent from Hertz in Berkeley CA. Nicki was very rude I was rushed out of the office because it was after 6pm. The whole staff was unprofessional and lacked customer service. Nicki also ran my credit card with out letting me know the type of car that I was getting but was very pissed once I told her to refund my credit card immediately .
