I live 15 minutes from Hertz - should be there by 10 then? Call again at 10:15. "We're on our way." Give up and take the bus to Hertz. Finally on the road at 11:15am. Where do I start? Have you ever had a bad day that just ended up great? Well that was my Thursday. Coming home from a nightmare appointment I get into an accident in rush hour traffic and now my car is not drivable, but no one is hurt, good. Call a tow truck, tow truck 1 hour out, call my insurance company, offices are closed, its 5:30 what to do, what to do. Start calling car rental places, should be no problem right. Little did I know they all close at 6:00 pm? The 1st two I called informed me of that, and said that they had no cars to rent, I mean really no cars or you didn't want to wait for me? Found Hertz on Yelp close by and looking at the reviews I was very leery and thought I would get the same answer, just because of the negative reviews, but to my surprise it didn't go down like that. I ran down what just happened to me and I didn't have a claim number yet. The young lady that answered the phone did say that they did close at 6 but that they will stay and help me thru this and get me a car, I mean cool, things are looking up right? Right at that moment the tow truck showed up, (15 minutes, 45 minutes early), while I was on the phone with her so I asked the driver if he could drop me off at the Hertz location but he said that he couldn't, well she heard me talking to the driver and interrupted and said that she would send one their Hertz drivers to pick me up at the scene. Fan-freaking-tasic!! I told the tow truck driver what shop to drop my car off at and gave him my credit card info, the keys and he started loading it up. By the time the car was on the flatbed, Hertz was there, 6:00pm, so I'm not stuck on the side of the road looking like a lost soul. So we get back to the Hertz locations (6:10pm), no joke they are out of cars, but Fallon I believe her name was, spoke to her Manager Jason right after she got off the phone with me and he sent two of his guys to pick up a vehicle for me, I mean what a team effort, I felt like I was a Hertz Titanium member, forget Gold member. So the manager Jason is checking me in, I explained that I didn't have a claim number yet and told him what shop that my car was at, he knew the shop and has worked with them all the time, he assured me not to worry that as soon as I got the claim number that they will bill the insurance company and he would be in contact with the body shop to let them know that I was squared away. Mind you its 6:40 now, everyone is closing up and cleaning up and it's just me in there now. The drivers come back with a Cadillac CTS fully loaded, I'm stunned, and I don't think that my insurance company will pay for that, I have $30 per day rental coverage. Jason apologized, wow, and said that it was all that was available and it was not my fault that they ran out of cars so they would take care of the overages; score one for the little guy. Usually I decline the insurance coverage because I always figure it's a waste of money, but this time, and this time only ever, I decided to take it just because I figured I got such a nice car and I'm not coming out of pocket any extra for the car. I already have a $500 deductible that I have to pay, so I ask what does it cover and he said anything that happens to the rental and I wouldn't have to pay a deductible if there was a claim, so oh well, I take the coverage its only like 9 bucks a day, why tempt fate right? So long story short, go to a wedding on Sat. and low and behold my new brother-in-law's, drunk, brother backs into the right rear door and put's a fat dent in the middle of the door, welcome to my family guy. I'm thinking I hope that the insurance I paid for is for real, and sure enough I called Jason on Monday and he said that it was ok, it was covered, wow somebody is looking out for me. That little bit of coverage I purchased saved me 500 bucks and the hassle of dealing with my insurance company. Now I wish I could just Yelp my new in-laws, but that is a whole other story... bottom line everyone at THAT Hertz location went above and beyond to take care of, and look out for me, from the pickup all the way to when I dropped off the car. Total team effort and I'm just a regular guy. Overall anytime I have to rent a car I'm coming out of my way to pick up here... read more

Avoid renting at this location. The office is tiny and under-staffed, and some of the staff seem to not understand how to use Hertz's computer system. As a result, I had to wait for almost an hour to get my car on a Sunday morning. Staff took almost an hour to complete the rental for one party ahead of me. He appeared to re-enter and re-enter the same info in the computer. Very inefficient. Avoid this location. read more

We have had to rent a car because our car was being repaired. Used Hertz because we generally have had good experience as Gold Card members. This time it has been terrible. The first car was not ready when my wife showed up, and it was expensive and poor quality. She ordered a "premium" car for $114/day, which showed up three days later. Turns out it was not a very good car either, in our opinion. Noisy engine, smelled foul, and today we discovered that there is a chunk missing from one of the tire sidewalls, which is a safety issue. It also has an add-on nav system which we don't want. I just called Hertz to complain and get another car. This office is closed on Sunday so I went to the national phone line. After being solicited for some ridiculous offer for a $100 gift certificate, it hung up! What's going on with Hertz? read more

the staff at Hertz on San Pablo Ave are the best. Marquisha,, Niki and Danny took care of me with great cars, service and care. I originally talked to Gabriel on the phone who was so friendly I decided to give them my business. When I got there I met the rest of the staff who could not have given me better attention. Thankfully the talked me into getting the extra insurance because some drunk person hit the rental. They gave me a new one in minutes. read more

DON"T RENT HERE! This was a very scary rental site. I reserved through Expedia BUT, when I picked up the car, things got WEIRD. I was told that when I bring the car back, THERE IS NOBODY WORKING UNTIL THE NEXT DAY! So, just leave the car unattended in an unlocked lot that anyone could enter. I would be responsible for the car for approximately 16 hours. I am 72 years old, have rented 100's of cars and NEVER heard of such a business practice. I tried calling this branch for 2 days after I dropped the car( made 5 calls). Nobody who answered the phone would even tell me if the car had been checked out by the staff. Good service--picked up me, my friend, and my two dogs from the service garage within minutes. I thought I'd have to go alone to get the rental car, so we'd planned on my friend and the dogs walking to the nearest cafe to wait for me. To our delight, however, the chatty, nice Hertz driver had no problem with two big dogs in the back seat. At the rental place (a very strange location!), a pleasant woman (name begins with a V) helped me out quickly and efficiently. She offered me a choice of four cars, and I picked the Mazda. As we were leaving, about 10 people came in at once to rent cars, and had I been one of those ten, I may not have had the excellent service I had--but I DID have excellent service. The next day, I returned the car with no incident, and the nice talkative guy drove us back to the service garage and on the way, he offered some helpful hints that he'd seen on TV... how to get a can of beer cold fast (ice AND salt), how to get dog hair off of upholstery (grip gloves--and we thanked him for the grip tip!), and a few more. We have used this place a few times and had previously not had any trouble. However, a few days ago our car personal car broke down. AAA, being the awesome organization that they are, reserved a car for us at Hertz. Hertz then called us and scheduled a time later in the day at which they would pick us up and bring us to the rental agency. Great, we thought. Hertz was 40 minutes late picking us up. Not a big deal, or car was broken down, so the day already sucked. However, three days later I called to return the car, They said to have it there by 12 Noon, because the closed early Saturday. When my wife got there at 11:30 the door clearly said closed at 2PM. Fine, they're just idiots. It happens. The last straw, however, was that they would not do a drop-off. It was only 2 miles and could have easily been done by anyone at the agency. Instead, my wife walked home. Lazy, late and with poor customer service gets this joint 1 star. I had a terrible experience renting at Hertz San Pablo. First, they provided me with the car which USB socket was not functional (I needed it to use my phone as a GPS). Unfortunately, I noticed that only after I had filled up the tank. When I returned the car to get another one with a functional USB socket, I asked how I could get refunded for the gas I had already put in the car. The guy in charge at that time told me to bring back the new car with an empty tank, which was fine for me. But when I returned the car, the contract had not been updated and the guy (a different one) kept insisting on the fact that I needed to fill up the tank. After arguing for 15 mins I had to pay for the extra gas. At the end, I lost more than one hour returning the car and getting, half a tank worth of gas and again 15 mins arguing with a completely stubborn guy who was not willing to help at all. I was willing to accept a voucher or something like that but I got nothing in return for the bad experience... I strongly discourage you to rent a car from there. read more

I went to this office on a Sunday, and as soon as I entered the door, a strong smell of urine hit me right in the face. The carpet was so disgusting and looked like it had never been vaccumed. The employee I got talked like a robot and had zero personality. The mid size car I rented smelled really bad and was dirty. I would think that Hertz had more class than this. I am used to picking up rental cars at the airport where they are accustomed to hurried business travelers. When I went to Hertz in Berkeley, I expected the same. I was a little rude to the people working at the desk because I had to wait about 10 minutes. However, the clerks explained that they have a different customer base and that many of the customers are getting a rental car for a long period of time while their own cars are being repaired. I got the car I had reserved, which was fine and clean. The rental cost was reasonable for a week. The desk clerks were very nice and professional even though I was initially a jerk. Mid-sized car, then they gave me a Nissan Versa, barely fit 5 people. People at the counter keep asking you to buy insurance although your credit card can cover the same exact insurance. Asked $28 to fill up gas upfront if you are too lazy to fill it up, but they won't refund if you have half tank left. Guess what? This Nissan requires $18-$20 to fill up tank, just want to charge you and never explain the most beneficial plans for you. Not recommended. read more

Was in a terrible fender bender (not my fault) and this was the rental company the other guys insurance covered. Being that I have never rented from hertz, i wanted to confirm that this location received my info and to ask questions for the deposit as the insurance wouldn't cover that. I called 6 times before anyone picked up; even after I finially got hold of someone the lady was extremely rude: she couldn't answer how much the deposit would be, nor would she confirm the order ... Just told me they were closing at 6pm... When I asked her what their hours would be for the following days she just said ok and hung up. I immediately called my insurance and had my rental service moved to a different location: they need to work on their customer service and phone etiquette- they drove my business away. read more

Rented a car in Los Cabo, Mx in October of this year. The bill I received was for 125.00. Had the agent to write the dollar amount in US dollars. Looked at my bank statement and was charged 139.80. Assume this was the charge for gas which the agent tried to charge (24.) before I left the lot for a full tank of gas. I filled up the tank the day before my departure and did not use the car until my departure date. I even asked at the desk if the gas tank was okay. Told it was fine, however, charged 14.80 for gas. Do not recommend Hertz when traveling in Mexico. Oh yes, they will try to offer you insurance and they also held 350.00 dollars against my credit card. The hub cabs, all 4 were scrapped and they made an issue of that. They had their own pictures which showed the condition preexisted. Really wanted to like this place this go around but I just can't. The only good experience I've had with this location was the young lady who was very helpful when I checked my car back in. When I returned the rental car, I chose to pay with a different card than I provided them when I first got the car. Swiped and done! That was yesterday. Today something told me to check my accounts and come to find out they charged both cards. I called Hertz and was told I needed to contact my bank about the issue. I called my bank and they said it would be a simple fix and that Hertz just needed to give my bank a call to clear it up. I spoke with Johnnie (Hertz rep) once again and told him that they were the ones who needed to call and I gave him my card info. Red flag when he didn't even ask what bank or for the number so I offered their number. He told me he'd call me back right after he called my bank.... still waiting on that call.... read more

Just want to make clear from the start that this story isn't lifted from Seinfeld. In May I made a reservation to rent a car for a business trip since I hate racking up the miles on my vehicles' odometers, and I've spent thousands of dollars at this location. Normally I drive to BART and take BART into downtown SF, but I had to pick up my rental at 5 and didn't want to have to leave a car at the rental office. So I took the transbay bus to work, and left 1.5 early from work to take the transbay back, between the extra time the transbay bus takes and leaving early, I was losing about 2.5 hours of my day to pick up the car. So I leave early, get off the bus at Gilman, walk down to Hertz and I'm wondering if they're closed since there's one car on the lot. I walk to the office, see that they're open, go in, there are two female employees just gossipping, at the counter I tell them I have a reservation, and they tell me they have no cars. I say, but I have a reservation, they say, yes but we don't have any cars. When I ask, well why did you take my reservation then, answer was I don't know. When I asked well why couldn't you have at least called me to let me know so I didn't waste hours of my day, the answer was nobody told us to contact you. When I asked couldn't you have gotten a car brought from another location so you could fulfill the reservation, answer was I don't know. I asked what I was supposed to do now since I had no means of transportation and I had to pick up my 6 year old from kindergarten after care and would now be late, answer was I don't know. These women were useless, if they worked for me they'd be fired. Had to call my wife to ask her to change her schedule to come get me so we could pick up our child, we were late. It's now 7 p.m., called Hertz to complain, they said they had a car I could go pick up at the Oakland airport, said no thanks since that would involve wife and kids going to the airport with me on the night of a Warriors playoff game. Hertz said someone from the local franchise would contact me, they never did, and neither did corporate, even after numerous contacts with Hertz corporate over the next three months, never got anything other than the canned response of thanks for being a Hertz customer, your business is appreciated, we look forward to serving you again, yada, yada, yada. made a reservation a week before I was to pick up a car. arrived 15 minutes before closing. sorry no car is available, so what good is a reservation??? people didn't return cars on that specific day. i'm from seattle wa. had someone pick me up at the airport and take me to the hertz in Berkeley. very disappointed as I had business to do the next day. we waited just in case someone might return a car 15 min. before they closed. sure enough someone returned a car just upon closing. I lucked out, but not to contact me beforehand that no cars were available is not a way to run a business as I depended on having a car when I got there. the worst management! read more
