Not a great place to rent from during COVID. We rented a car and I was watching the guys who were cleaning cars do so with no masks on (or masks that were half on and not covering their noses). I know it is hot and uncomfortable to wear a mask, but it is also important when working with the public. The guy who vacuumed my car had his mask over his mouth and not his nose. When he went to move my car I asked him to please put his mask on and he seemed visibly annoyed. I empathize with how hot and stuffy masks are, but I didn't feel like the car was safe or sanitized in any way. I had to re-sanitize the car once I left and then air it out for a few hours to feel comfortable driving it. I would have given one star, but I give it two stars because the guy helping me at the counter was nice, and the return was really easy. read more

AWFUL. AVOID. We only came here because enterprise down the street only had 2 cars to choose from. This place had a 2019 Honda(I didn't even know they used such old cars still), which is why we went here. The people who work at this shop are SO rude. Both our pick up and return were awful experiences. The larger blonde white lady white hair and glasses is exceptionally rude. We parked our car where they move the cars to clean(because it makes logical sense and we thought we were saving them time) and she literally yelled at us and said move the car, this is not authorized for parking. Also, she just has a rude and unfriendly manner about her whole aura. Then the other older gentleman who is bald is awful as well. They have a no smoking policy yet I watched him smoke a cigarette, then immediately go into our rental car and literally sat in there for over 5 minutes so I car smelt like smoke when we got it. Lovely. Then when we returned our car, yea it was a little messy, but literally a quick dust of the chairs would have moved the crumbs to the floor which they could have easily vacuumed up during their "deep clean" of the car. Then he said there is dog hair everywhere and it looks like you had a party in the back seat. My husband responded no animals were in the car and he proceeded to saw, well then your kids hair was all over. ‍‍. This rude sarcasm was highly uncalled for and seeing as this is the first and last time using them, we didn't say anything but both these folks were awful. Also, in addition to all that fun, their system was down when we arrived for pick up and when we returned the car as well. So the waits were awfully long and both times, after over 20 min waits, they just said, we will call if there are any issues. Old cars, long wait, rude employees, bad customer service. Average wait time is 1 hours and even though we reserved the car days before, there wasn't one available with our desired specs when we arrived to pick it up. Not only did I have to pay for the one size up, they also charged me road side assistance and insurance even though I declined and the online reservation clearly showed I did not want it. They disinfected the car and take covid safety procedures rather seriously - the rep helping us even took our car to the car wash since it came in quite dirty. I had to call several times to ask what the charges were for, they left me on hold the first time for about half and hour and the second time for an hour. Three words: DON'T DO IT!!! I usually go with Enterprise and only went with them because Expedia had them highly recommended. First of all, they took a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR deposit because I had reserved with a debit card. Enterprise only takes a three hundred dollar hold. Greedy, much? Here's the worst part. Four days after my on time return of the car, I got this threatening robocall stating I hadn't yet returned the car and was going to be prosecuted. I call the 800 number given on the call and spoke to a man who said that I had received the call because the office "had not closed out the contract". He said as soon as they did I would receive my $500 deposit back. He said he had called them for me and I should be receiving my money within a day or so. Fast forward a few weeks (today) and I received another threatening robocall. This time I called the office directly and explained the situation to them. They toldnme my name wasn't in their system!! I asked the guy on the phone how they could not have someone who JUST rented from them in their database. His response, "We have a very imperfect system". So then the guy told me to call the 800 number again. Why? So they can not do what they promise again. I told him I shouldn't have to do all this so he said he would vall for me and get back to me. Whoever answered the phone at 10am-11am June 1 from this location has absolutely zero customer service Had a flat tire over the Memorial Day weekend and they were unreachable due to the holiday. Had to tow the vehicle back to my house. Called this morning explaining my situation, and he cut me off saying "give me a minute give me a minute" Put me on hold for 15-20 minutes and never came back on the line. Berkeley Location is the worst experience I have ever had. The problem is, this was not the first time I've experienced this negative type of behavior from this location. However, as this was the second time with such a negative experience, it will be the last time I will ever rent from this facility again! If you want the whole story - you can ask Marlon. I'm sure he can remind you of what he told me over the phone the day before I came in to pick up the truck that I had reserved several months prior, but he could never promise me that vehicle since it was NEVER available, to begin with. Worst place to rent a car! I prepaid for 3 days and returned it half day late. They wanted to charge me for $21for a late fee which I agreed to pay, after all I was late. Then, they wanted $12 for one hour late!?? One hour late, I've already paid for a full day as a late fee! Then they wanted to tax me 9.25% on the total amount. I explained that I had already paid taxes on the total amount and the only portion left to pay was the tax on one day. After 10 minutes of basic math, the clerk was rude and wouldn't have it any other way. The more I thought about it the more it occurred to me that simple arithmetic was complex indeed to some. Friendly staff. The positives stop there. The cars are old and dirty. They also look, sound and perform like they need maintenance or need to be cycled out of their car inventory. The wait time from the minute they start serving you is painful and very long as the staff slowly works through their computer and process. From hello to goodbye took 35 minutes.. Finally, they are comfortable handing over cars at half a gas tank with the explanation that's all they are required to do. No doubt they get cars back typically with more gas then they had before. This Hertz Local Edition branch is located across the street from University Village and is the most convenient (albeit funky) location for this Albanian to rent a car. I did it once myself as part of a repair-related situation, and when Enterprise hasn't worked out, I've sent others (like my brother) here for their short-term rental needs. I like that I can easily walk down here, take care of business, and within minutes drive off the lot. The cars have been priced well, were clean, and they've run well. Due to the unanticipated convergence of a number of unique circumstances, I found myself in need of a rental car on the eve of a long-planned road trip. This Hertz location is the closest & most convenient of any rental car company for me, so I went online & made a reservation. This Hertz location also offers free customer pick-up/ drop-off, so I made an appointment for that as well. Things did not get off to a good start. The day of my rental, I rushed home to make certain I was there on time for my pick-up. & then waited. & waited. & waited. The driver finally showed up over an hour late. The driver seemed a little nervous & didn't provide any reason for being so late. Great. Arriving at the office, things didn't get any better. There was a line out the door. Glacial. That was the rate at which the line moved. But I can't blame the staff for that. I simply could not believe some of the stuff I overheard from prospective renters up at the counter. Yes, there is certain documentation you must have in order to rent a car. Regardless of your needs/ personal situation, no, they will not hand over the keys to a car without knowing who you are/ where you reside/ if you are insured. It was like crazy town up in there. Come prepared, people. Renting a car isn't like buying a bag of chips at the corner market. My turn eventually came. I presented my documentation/ information/ reservation & my rental was processed quickly (imagine that). There was 1 snag, however. They no longer had the car I reserved. I originally booked a compact to get higher mpg, but only full-size was left. I took it & was glad to have something. Over the course of the road trip, I developed an appreciation for the upgrade. The full-size car didn't get the mpg I was looking for when I reserved a compact, but it's fuel efficiency was better than expected & not significantly worse than a compact. It was also much more comfortable than a compact after many hours on the road. Returning the car was completely hassle-free. I got a different driver for the drop-off back home, who was a lot more on the ball than the pick-up driver was. Altogether, the whole experience ended up being OK. Really, in spite of the total circus atmosphere to get my rental, I might be inclined to rate this Hertz location 4 stars. Everything did work out fine. But the pick-up driver being over an hour late for no reason is hard to overlook. read more

So these guys get a really bad rap on Yelp, which I don't think they deserve. I was really worried when I went to rent a car here because of the ratings, and the fact that I didn't get to choose them. I was basically forced to go here, because the liable insurance company picked them for me, due to price. So it was a pretty stressful time, but all I got was friendly staff and good service here, So I feel like leaving them a nice review. I would say that the true rating here is four stars, but I'm gonna leave five stars because I want to throw them a bone. The car they gave me was a clean, reliable, 2017 model. No problems with the car at all. The other reviews say that the staff is friendly and I have to agree. They're straight up a lot of fun. They poke fun at each other. I would say that the only downside here was that upon arrival, it took them kind of a while to get me a car. Although I think of this is mainly because the insurance company was very cheap, and narrowed it down to one possible type of car Hertz could give me. I think a lot of the other reviewers on yelp here are basically just super frustrated for other reasons, but I could be wrong. Nobody leaves a review if everything goes well, right? I honestly get the impression that none of the people at Hertz care about Yelp reviews anyway. Terrible COVID protocol for a rental agency. The truck I rented was dirty inside and out when I got it. Employees use masks but no gloves. My girlfriend is high risk for COVID so I disinfected the vehicle myself after pickup. Truck battery died several times causing me time and effort including arriving to return the truck last minute. Upon returning the truck I was fraudulently charged a $300 pet fee though no pets were ever in the vehicle. Going to call Hertz tomorrow to dispute the charges. The guy who took the truck in was extremely rude and wouldn't go over the extra charge (which I refused but was charged anyway with no chance of explaining). The rental guy had a real bad attitude due to me being last minute though I only was because the poorly maintained vehicle's battery died on me for the third time in the one week that I rented the truck. I have been renting vehicles for years and never had any rental agency scam me so bad. Fraudulent charges were more expensive than a one week car rental. AVOID THIS BUSINESS PLEASE!!!! read more

Had a bad experience here. I have been renting cars for over twenty years. I needed a rental for a number of months due to my car being hit by a big rig at my job. I had the rental for 6 months. I was harassed several times by this location not remembering or having in their system that this was a long term rental. At the end of the rental and when I dropped the car off, they charged my card for the last week of the rental. The card they had on file was for incidentals. These charges should have went to the insurance adjuster just as they had been in past. I spoke to the manager about the mistake and she refused to correct the problem. Hertz had a nonchalant attitude about the situation. They only wanted a valid card to charge. Please keep in mind that I am a gold member with Hertz. I rented the vehicle for my fiancé as a birthday present and we were going to be traveling to Laguna Beach. when i got to Hertz to pick up my car they told us because the Credit Card didn't match my fiancé's drivers license i wasn't allowed to pick up our rental. This was my first time renting with hertz. I drove the car To LA for work and as I'm driving on the freeway the bottom of the car starts dragging on the freeway!!! I immediately freaked out because I had no idea where the noise was coming from. I had never experienced this before. I typically rent from enterprise but I decided to try hertz because it was less expensive.... That was my first mistake. I arrive at a safe enough place to see what's going on and realize the bottom of the car has folded under the car and as I'm trying to pull the plastic I realize there was silver duct tape that was holding this cover in place.. mhm very ghetto lol I couldn't believe it. Mind you I'm at an Oprah and JLO event driving up to the parking lot making all this noise with this plastic dragging underneath this hoopty. You can only imagine my embarrassment. To top this off the car is making rattling noises on the freeway so I'm really looking like I'm out here on the run. Its pure comedy just thinking about it now but in the moment it was such an inconvenience and honestly super scary. I had to go to the nearest hertz in LA switch the vehicle which they only wanted to switch my compact Hyundai for a mini van! I was like waiiittt uh uh I can't be here driving a mini van all the way back to the bay! For the inconvenience of all of this they offered me a $20 credit and told me they would waive a $20 fee. I wasn't happy with that so they offered a $50 gift card towards future rentals. I'm not happy with this either because this was such a horrible experience that I would rather just rent with another car rental agency I don't know if I will book with them again. I've had a mixed experience here. The first time around, I waited for nearly 30 minutes before I was helped (it was a Monday morning so it was poppin') and the gal who helped me kinda scammed me into a higher rate car (I was being given a special rate through my insurance and I wasn't aware that the $25/day limit INCLUDED taxes... so I was very unhappy with the extra $40 I paid). The actual car itself was a dream, though. I drove a Hyundai Sonata and it drove even better than my own Hyundai Sonata. I was kinda bummed when I had to return the car! I was able to voice my concerns with the staff at Hertz and the next time around, which was this past Tuesday at 8:30 AM, all the guys helping me were SO nice and helpful. It was perhaps the nicest and most pleasant rental experience I've ever had. They were really taking the time to double check things for me, they made sure to document every bit of existing damage on the car and then offered to send those pictures to me-- they just put me into a good mood for the rest of the day! While I had no choice but to come to this Hertz because of insurance, I'm ultimately glad that I got to know these guys. I know that they will listen to feedback and act accordingly. read more

Worst customer experience ever. I came in on a Monday morning to pick up a rental and was told that I was not on the list. Since I had confirmed the reservation with them over the phone, I could not understand why. The young lady at the front desk provided no help in looking into issue beyond rudely and repeatedly stating that I was not on the list and that they had no cars available. She could not even provide me a number to call Hertz centrally. After some back and forth on the phone with the central customer service I got a call back from they did actually have a car available. Well, it still took almost an hour to get the car upon returning even with manager personally handling the paperwork. Evidently, available and ready are not the same thing. read more
