AVOID THIS LOCATION. I am soooo pissed I am writing this review while on hold waiting for someone to help me. This place is totally unprofessional and they don't know how to service customer in the order they are received. I rented a car from this location and two weeks later I noticed a $30. charge on my account. I called to find out why and was placed on hold for 15 minutes before being disconnected. I called back and was thrown on hold another 15 minutes and disconnected again. The 3rd time I called back I tried to explain that I had been holding and was disconnected but NIEMA insisted on placing me on hold a third time. This is my 4th attempt and I've been holding 9 minutes and I'm stuck listening to some stupid music. If I could give this location 0 stars I would. At this point my anger is not about the random $30 charge but about the customer experience. 1 hour 20 minutes later I'm finally speaking with the manager (Lacey). SMH!!!!!!! read more

IF "ZERO" STARS WAS AN OPTION THIS HERTZ GETS A BIG FAT "0" Here's why; reserved a rental for a car over the Memorial holiday. We initially went to the Webster location in Oakland, they referred us to the Albany/Berkeley location because they have the largest parking lot and inventory of cars (which is true). We were greeted by a female at the front desk named Nikki who immediately took out frustration on us for being referred to go there via there own company. She said that it was a busy weekend and that no cars were available or clean at her location. And so we were turned away to a different Herzt. We were disappointed with the treatment that we received that day and to make matters worse the woman "Nikki" was the manager. We went back the second time a month later (not a holiday) while our car was being repaired and would you know, it was like De Ja Vu all over again. Im really hoping as a company Hertz can figure out what to do with this team of individuals to improve customer service along with reputation. I can tell you Herts will never have my business. I recently used Hertz for a four-day trip to LA, and I was really happy with the whole experience. I reserved about a week ahead of time online, and I used the UC Berkeley group code (for students, staff, or faculty) for really great savings! This particular HLE is great because it accommodates underage drivers. (I was 20 years old at the time.) I also wanted my friends to help drive on the trip, and I just had to have my friends with me at pickup time to sign contracts. There was no additional fee for adding these drivers. After reserving online, I was reviewing the confirmation email, and noticed that I got charged $23.25 for an additional hour because I had set pickup to 11:30 AM and return time to 12 PM four days later. I realized that I only needed to change the return time to 30 minutes earlier to avoid paying $23.25. There was no way to modify my reservation online, so I had to call a 1-800 number and was pleasantly surprised to get almost immediate service. The lady I was speaking to was very helpful and immediately understood why I wanted to change my return time by 30 minutes. The whole call took less than five minutes, and I immediately got email confirmation of the itinerary change. I ended up paying only $278.80 for a compact car for four days with full insurance. My friend who reserved with a different company for the same trip was quoted a much higher price, so I convinced him to switch to Hertz, where he saved several hundred dollars. I signed up for the free home pick-up service when I reserved online and received a confirmation call several hours prior to confirm the time and location. I also asked them to pick up my two friends (who were going to sign the contract to drive as additional drivers), and they were accommodating about this. I liked the punctuality of the home pick-up. At the office, there was little if any waiting, and we received our keys less than 20 minutes after arrival. The man that helped me was helpful and explained the various insurance policies to me so that I selected one with full coverage. I also received a free car upgrade to a brand new Nissan Versa. It was a lovely red car that drove really smoothly. Hertz staff has been courteous and helpful through the whole process. I would definitely rent with Hertz again and encourage my friends to also do so. I think it really pays off to do your research and reserve early. It can save you a lot of time and money during the rental process, and it helps to be educated about official policies regarding accidents, additional drivers, and insurance. TIPS: - Reserve online ahead-of-time and use the UC Berkeley group code. - Read the policies about underage drivers, additional drivers, and insurance online. - Make sure your pickup/return times don't go a little bit over a full day because you'll be charged for even an extra 30 minutes. - Sign up for home pick-up to be driven to the location, which is quite removed from the UC Berkeley campus. read more

I rented a car under an insurance claim and really... this was the closest that was by work and the body shop that I selected. While not incredibly ideal for me (after being side swiped by a YOUTH who tried to hit and run), this location served its purpose. The agents were nice, but really... I was nice to them so they returned the favor. Everyone was kind of a jerk when it came to the numerous reasons they were complaining... "Why isnt my car ready"... "what do you mean you can authorize a refund"... my favorite was the complaint of using a debit card; despite the millions of signs and notices plastered along the lobby, the website and the email confirmation. Should these people really be driving??? Especially cars that dont belong to them?... EEK... steer clear! These people are running scams flipping cars with damage over to other customers! They f**k up at their job and/or when employees damage cars try to cover it up when an unsuspecting customer arrives they can dupe! Ive rented many times before and they always go over the car WITH the renter BEFOREHAND and take pictures with both parties present. I waited 40 minutes for this car to be cleaned and they just brought it around with the keys and i left. Had it for 2 days and didn't damage it myself. Of course, i noticed it upon return as did the original agent, who gleefully expressed her observation! DONT TRUST THIS LOCATION! COVID policies were well adhered to, not sure how one could do better. Car was clean, AC was cold, and the car ran wonderfully. This place is horrible. I paid for a rental car in advance and got to Hertz 8:00 am and was told they don't have any cars. This place did not have the courtesy to contact me and inform me in advance that there was no cars. They refused to give me a refund on the spot, stating they did not have any cash. I was give a 800 number to call and had to return because I was given the wrong number. This place did not attempt to find me another car nor compensate me for my inconvenience. I will never use any Hertz again. They have very poor business practice. I called the 800 number and still wasn't able to speak with a live person to get my refund. read more

WORST CAR RENTAL COMPANY EVER. 3 hours wait to get the car, no inspection done prior to leaving and then the bumper started to separate from the car on the drivers side rear. I had prepaid for a week. I only kept the car for 2 days. I didn't want a damaged car to be blamed for..so back it went. They had no car to replace it with, so I was out five days rental on a car I never got. I was told by Hertz employee I would receive a "pro-rated refund" on my credit card. Never happened. The employee should have done the refund on the card at the time it was returned, I guess she never got around to it. This company is a joke, awful experience. Go to Enterprise, they take care of you. Hertz? They fuck you over. I called my credit card after a month and disputed the charge. Hertz sent me to a collection agency. Talk about a rotten experience. This office had no scheduling at all of when cars would be available for reservations. About a third of the people waiting, who had reservations, they had no cars for. I've never seen a rental car company that over-reserved cars and when you show up, they don't even have a car for you. Oops, sorry. This place really sucks. Thanks for nothing from the shitty staff at this place. I was sent a letter telling me I'm banned from renting from Hertz. Like I caused this to happen. This organization is a laughing stock and a disgrace to the American ideals! It took 3 hrs to get through a line of 4 other renters to find out they had no car for me. I'm a Gold/5 Star Hertz member - I don't state this to be elitist but to put in context that I've had lots of experience renting cars. I generally have low expectations when renting a car. I suggest keeping your expectations as low as possible when renting from this location. I don't place the blame squarely on the staff - they all seem to be fairly inexperienced seemingly learning the job as they go - the sense that you are paying someone who barely knows their job however is not easy to drop - it really has the feel of a Hertz job-training-center - the minor leagues if you will. The "customers" who avail themselves to this location are simply knuckleheads! They quibble about rules, policies, and above all prices! They approach their renting-a-car experience as if it is a right. These whinging customers make this location that much more unpleasant. Beware this place is a negative vortex of whining! read more

Never never do it again. Go somewhere else. We have been renting cars here, but every time is worst than the previous experience. Not saying for car wide, you have really no choice. We reserve our car way ahead of the trip every time, they never have the right car we reserve online. We never upgrade and take whatever they have. This round, we booked a fusion, they assigned us a prius, like last time. To just add on it, the Prius we got last time was horrible. Anyway, the Prius was not there, the customer service said it will be in another 20 mins. We asked for alternative, she gave us a Jeep with full cigarettes smoke all over. I asked if she can have her guy to at least wrap the interior off, she said it will take hrs to do that. Then there came a Kia soul, which was a grade lower. She said she couldn't get us a downgrade without charging us of today's rate, so we took the smoky Jeep compass. They also take a long time to clean only the inside, not the outside. And juST handed you a dirty car... Agree with everyone else, it does take at least 1 hr to pick up any cars. read more

I have to say the rental experience its self was almost seamless. It was an insurance rental-my car was rear-ended and I had to have a car for a week while mine was in the shop. It was a long wait-they were very busy, but staff was helpful and I finally received a clean, good car. My only question was on the gas charges. I was told my rental got 29 miles to the gallon. I drove 52 miles that week, so I figure it used maybe two gallons. But when it was time fo fill the car before returning the car took seven gallons of gas. I didn't check the gas gage when I got the car because I was too busy figuring out where the directionals, emergency brake and all that were located. I just didn't think to check if the tank was full but maybe it wasn't. I still have questions about this that it seems will not be resolved. read more

Despite the low rating on Yelp, I called up the closest Hertz, and inquired about renting a car. I spoke to Anthony several times and he was very friendly and helpful. He explained all my options to me thoroughly since I was renting through AAA. By the time the AAA authorization went through, it was 5:30, and they close at 6. I believe Anthony had left, so I spoke with another guy, who had me on hold on the phone till 5:35, we spoke for a couple of minutes and I told him that I'd pick up the car before closing. He said, "Well, if you can get here in 20 minutes...". I told him that I could be there in 5 because I lived right around the corner and to have the paperwork ready, and he told me to have my drivers license and credit card ready. I literally get there a couple of minutes later, and see a guy with a Hertz name tag locking up. When he sees me rolling up (they have a private lot), he quickly locked up, ran to his car, turned on the engine, and pedaled to the metal out of there. I'm not making this up. If he wasn't actually going to wait till at least 5:45 for us, instead of saying, "If you can be here in 20 minutes...", I would've much appreciated a "Can you come in tomorrow?" I'm taking my business elsewhere in the morning. read more

OMG. First off, the office smelled of wee and weed. Gross! I have no idea where the piss smell was emanating from. As for the weed smell, it could have been the guy sitting in a chair in the lobby area but who the hell knows. Either way, it was off-putting. The nice tall guy I worked with upon pickup was very helpful and polite. The guy with the Everlast beard and leather jacket gnawing obnoxiously on his gum when I returned the car....well, he wasn't a douche, but he wasn't exactly customer-servicey either. At least spit the gum out before dealing with the public....you look like a cow chewing on cud. FFS. The car I had was pretty dirty on the inside. Didn't look as if they bothered to clean it out before putting it back on the lot. And it didn't start out with a full tank either. That was a first for me. Please do yourself a favor. I wish I read the reviews on here first. I rented the car online and was quoted and charged the price for the days. The day came for me to pick up the car. I thought everything was fine, I paid the 240 or so for the 3 days, come to find out, I have to pay another 160 because it was not in the system that the 3rd was rented. Which made absolutely!!!! No sense!!! I showed the confirmation to the lady, that states the day and time in which I booked it for. The amount that is due for the days, everything was there clean in text. I could understand if the amount was a hold of some sort, but I was assure it wasn't and it was the amount that was due. I'm already behind schedule, having to go back and forth with the lady for 40 mins. I just gave up when she told me to call the hertz customer service to resolve it, what kind of business is that? That the people you are working with at the location can't do anything about it. Long story short, expect to have extra, and if you're booking online, be careful as this location might fool you into paying more. I would NEVER come back here! I thought Hertz was great, but the service at Dollar and Budget are better, shows you where Hertz stands today. Go get your rental from the Airport in Oakland, save you a headache, trust me! It was cold and gray outside, but inside the spartan, octagonal office it felt like I was in a tropical savannah. Maybe it was the mosquito netting. Or the tall, gaunt native in crisp khakis rocking back in the chair, his hazy, cheshire-cat grin revealing a row of tiny, unnaturally clean, bead-like teeth. There was a gray air inside the place, sweltering and lysergic. The other people waiting were fanning themselves, and if I tried to focus on any one, their faces dissolved into a soft-focus blur. The man behind the counter seemed to perpetually be calling, "Next," but the line--it was more like a dispersed crowd--never actually moved. He was average height, with slick hair and a thin wispy moustache, and acne. Another man, short, heavy-browed, knuckles barely scraping the carpet as he loped, would trot in and out, delivering keys and taking people to their cars. So this was Purgatory. When my turn finally came, I pushed through the dense air, numb from standing so long, and plopped my keys on the counter. They didn't make a sound as they landed. "I'm just returning this car," I said, but it came out sounding like I had peanut butter slathered on my tongue. The greasy-haired man didn't respond, but stared at his computer screen, punching in individual keys. I waited. "Will that be on the same card," he asked, to which I replied it would be. Finally, in a slow drawl: "Thank you Mr. Nelson you're all good to go." I scrutinized him. "Can I get a ride back to downtown Berkeley I need to meet a friend soon and can't wait for a bus." He face showed surprise, as though I had delivered some long-forgot code, an ancient spell, and he couldn't remember the protocol for responding. "Why sure we'll be with you in just a minute please take a seat." I took a seat next to the cannibal in khakis. I waited. After about ten minutes (according to the wall clock, which I think was off by an hour or four), I stood up, and flagged the greasy-haired man again. Like a brontosaurus, he looked up lazily. I tried to remain focused. "Will I be able to get a ride...soon?" "Yes but our guy is out with another customer right now it will be only five minutes." I waited another half hour, tapping my foot angrily and glowering at him whenever I got the chance. I felt the other waiting customers--who had changed faces, come and gone--frown disapprovingly at my impatience. When I saw the knuckles-guy reappear, I looked at him, and the guy behind the counter. Neither made any gesture or comment. Were they speaking through some primordial telepathy? I stood again, and paused for moment before approaching the counter, so as not to appear impatient or rushed. "Excuse me, but it's been close to an hour. I could have walked to downtown Berkeley by now. Can I please get a ride?" At which point the greasy-haired man gave me a cold look and, as if remembering his line, said, "All of our agents are busy helping other customers but if you can wait just a few more minutes..." But I was out of there. Clawing through the thickening crowd of milling customers and leering cannibals, I made my way to the front door. Stepping into the cool crisp Berkeley air, I breathed deeply and scanned the surroundings. Just up the street, a 52 bus was stopped at a light, coming this way. My blood suddenly infused with this rich air, I ran, darting across San Pablo--making sure no cars were coming--and leaped to the curb just as the bus was pulling up. I fished for quarters and dimes, and counting out the correct change, boarded the Berkeley-bound bus, and not a moment too soon. read more

I would put negative stars but that is not an option unfortunately. My girlfriend needed to rent a car because her car was in the shop due to someone running a stop sign. The shop we went to suggested hertz as an option because it was near by. We ended up renting a 2016 Mazda 3. Now you would think for a business stand point, if you're going to rent cars to people, wouldn't it be smart to check the vehicles? The brakes on the Mazda are wearing out that you can hear the metal to metal rubbing. Now I called the el sobrante location (where we originally rented the car) to try and switch out the car for a different one but they said "we have no inventory at this time." Keep in mind I had only had the car 1-2 days and when I was there the parking lot had at least 6 vehicles. They were very rude about it to. Horrible customer service. So they told me to call this Berkeley location. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! They to were out of vehicles and so I asked if I could make a reservation for the next available mid-size vehicle (again keep in mind I have a vehicle with messed up brakes). She rudely stated "we do not take reservations so I can't do anything for you." I hung up before I outburst in words that should not be typed. I continued to call often and same story at both locations, "we have no inventory." You would think as a car rental place that they would have extra vehicles or at least go out of their way to call other locations for you to have them deliver a vehicle that is safe. But no almost 2 weeks and I still have the same vehicle. Hertz is by far the worst business I have ever dealt with. read more

My car was rear-ended while parked a few weeks ago, and I really dreaded having to go through the process of filing a claim, finding a repair center, scheduling an appointment, getting a rental car, coordinating rides, etc. etc. etc. However, I'm at the tail end of this whole mini-mess and in retrospect, it wasn't bad at all. When my insurance company, State Farm, told me that I could get a rental through Hertz, I immediately jumped on Yelp to see what locations were nearby, and what other people thought of them. I felt so defeated looking at all the poor reviews that I seriously considered swallowing the full cost of a rental through Enterprise. But come on now. $300+ on my own versus close to free (I'd just pay for the $9/day insurance) through Hertz? Yeah... I figured that even if Hertz gave me the royal can-I-give-this-dump-0-stars experience, with all the money I'd save, I'd be able to self-medicate at Gary freakin' Danko... after sitting in a waiting list for a few months, right? Plenty of thanks goes to the Hertz teams at their Auto Row location on Webster in Oakland, and this one on San Pablo in Albany. Even though I picked up my rental in Oakland, there were no issues with dropping it off in Albany. Life is one heck of a curveball dealing pitcher, though, and when I got to the Albany location at around 8 this morning, I was shocked to find the place packed full of people. I had no idea why they were all there, but I had a sinking feeling that I would be there most of the morning, and would get to work much later than I told my boss I would be in. I could tell that the staff was doing the best they could to handle all of the people there, answer phones, prep cars, etc., so I took a seat and started busying myself with my phone. Just a few minutes later, though, I heard a man in a blue dress shirt (Jason) ask if there was anyone that wanted to drop off a car. My head shot up and I stood with the car keys in my hand. He greeted me, took the keys, and went outside to bring the car in. After he came back, he went to a computer, printed out my receipt, came over to explain my charges (basically $9/day for insurance - $45 total for the week), and asked if I had any questions. I knew they were stretched thin, but I didn't know how else I was going to get to Shattuck Auto Center to pick up my car. I asked if it was still possible for them to spare someone to give me a ride over, and without any hesitation at all, he smiled and told me that they'd be happy to. He introduced me to Lamarr who kindly opened the car door for me (so sweet!), and gave me a ride over. I am a classic introvert and also a person that tends to get really self-conscious. Lamarr, however, had a very calm demeanor that inspired a lot of confidence in me and actually reminded me a lot of my Dad. We ended up having a great, faith-in-humanity-restoring, conversation on the ride over. How often do you meet a complete stranger and just hit it off? That's rare in my book, and I enjoyed just hearing him talk about how the Bay Area has changed a lot since he was little. When we got to Shattuck Auto Center, I received the news that my car would not be ready until later in the afternoon. (Two curveballs in one day, life is on a roll!) Lamarr saw me worriedly look back at him as I debated just going back for the rental. I walked up to him and explained the situation, and immediately he offered to drive me to work. I was so touched by his offer to help me out, but then I remembered that I was 3 blocks from Ashby BART and I work in SF, haha! So I declined his generous gesture and said goodbye as I headed to BART. I know that other people have had some pretty awful experiences with this place, and I'm not saying that this team is incapable of making mistakes, but I had a flawless experience with folks that went above and beyond, and really made my day a whole lot better. Personally, I know that I have no reservations about coming back to this place or recommending it to friends and family. I hope they have good experiences, too. read more

Most car rental places are bad, but this one is simply the worst. The reason they are not closed yet, I guess, is because the innocent college kids nearby to sustain their business. 1. The staff working here is rude. One staff members who claim to be "Angela" said she doesn't like the way I talk to people. I told her that I don't like her way to handle business. 2. I reserved a vehicle, but it's not available until 3 hours later. I waited there for 3 hours like moron. I asked why they don't commit to my prepaid reservation. They said this is not what a reservation is. Common sense tells me that reservation means that you should put that car on hold! 3. On second thought, I think they are lying all the time. There are 9 different Hertz nearby, and they can just send one from a different location. So, if you want to talk to rude, lying, and irresponsible car rental shop, this is your choice. read more

By far one of the worst experiences I have had with customer service. I came to rent a car for a weekend getaway and we're helped by this young AfAm lady, and her attitude off the bat is quite rude. She tells us that everything might be booked but she'll "try" in a condescending tone. I tell her I'm a student at Cal -- which I've heard from others waives the age fee and gives a discount. She said it only waives the age fee and then quotes us the price of 81/day for a compact. I'm a little taken aback and I pull up the pricing on my phone, with a code of course and it comes down to 31/day for a compact. She says well obviously it's going to be cheaper online... Do you have a code? I say yes and she says uh huh I thought so that's why online is always cheaper. Somehow I think she expected us to know that and the way she presented herself was completely unprofessional and insulting. I'm shocked she didn't try to suggest how I could get a cheaper rate... I'm a broke college student and I don't have time to deal with companies that don't know their consumer base. read more

"We didn't expect this volume of reservations." Despite the fact that I had made a reservation days ago, they hadn't kept a car for me, or for about 20 other people waiting outside for several hours. They had very considerately waited until 12:30 pm on sunday, 30 minutes after they, and almost every other rental car company in town, closed, to tell us this. The Manger, Nick, is the rudest person I have spoken to in a very long time. He needs remedial customer service training or to be fired. I made a reservation for my 24 year-old daughter (her husband had just died, she was flying from AZ to MA to bury him). She did not have a credit card, just a debit card. She confirmed with the Albany Airport Hertz that she could use her debit card to pick up the car as long as she had $200 on her card for the deposit. I paid the rental fee online using a AAA promo code to waive the underage renter fee. When she got to the counter she was told she couldn't use it because I prepaid the rental. I was referred to the 800-number. The woman at the 800 number, when hearing that my daughter was using a debit card to pay the the deposit, she immediately said that was against policy and "if they do that it is on them." She ended the conversation without resolving the promo code issue and sent me back to the Albany counter. I then was told to call the manager, Nick. By this time I was pretty upset but trying to be polite, asking what we had to do to resolve the issue. The condescending tone and sarcastic answers were not appropriate. And yes, after about 45 minutes on the phone getting conflicting information, attitude and sarcasm I copped a serious attitude and went off on him and the girl behind the counter. Long story short, if her friend hadn't met her at the airport and used his credit card, they would not have given her a car. Somewhere buried in the pages of online pop up contracts they apparently say they don't accept pre-paid debit cards. I'm not a banker - I didn't know there was even a difference. And sorry, dealing with a family tragedy from across the country, with a 24 year old widow with a 3 year old son, I neglected to read every word of the contract, as Nick said he would have done if it had been him under the same circumstances. What a guy. Nick appropriately "schooled" me for my ignorance and carelessness. They "generously" waived the under age renter fee for one day (as she turned 25 one day before the end of the rental period, and the same day as her husband's funeral). If there was a misunderstanding on my part, I accept that. A little compassion for the situation and a solution was all we asked for. While waiting in line at this place I came to the conclusion that I could probably just steal a car, get arrested for gta, serve time in prison, and be released from prison and have a more expedient and positive experience than what I had this morning. Something is seriously wrong with this Hertz. Yes my rental was cheap but you get what you pay for. Crap service. Whole bunch of knuckle-dragging laziness going down round here. (Note: exception goes to the cute girl with curly hair who keeps a smile on at all times and seems to put some effort into her work). Renting here HURTZ! I'm not going to waste even more of my time writing a length account of our trauma at the hands of this place. Cliff's Notes: engine light comes on, they blow me off on the phone, I try and drop it off but there is a massive line, I couldn't use the car the day before (for a long trip) but they make me pay for that day anyway, they keep telling me I have to talk to the manager but won't give me the manager's phone number, one of the staff walks off in the middle of "helping" my wife and starts receiving a car outside - I had to go out and practically beg him to come back and take our key and let us get the $%#^ out of there! Stop giving these clowns your money. Their cars are old, shitty, and dirty. We stopped by here to exchange a rental for another because the first car we got had a piece falling off. The car they gave us was filthy. I asked for another car and the guy said they were ALL dirty. How are you still in business? You need to clean your cars before you rent them--that is pretty much the least you can do. We have a baby and didn't feel good about putting her in a filthy car. We had to take a much smaller car that looked like it was made in the late 90s. It wasn't clean (as promised) but it was less dirty, which is the best that you can expect from this shit business. read more

Before renting from this place, consider that it would be faster to wait for flying cars or people sized vacuum transportation tubes to come along than to wait for these idiots to finish filling out your rental agreement. You'd have a better chance trying to astrally project to your destination than you would of getting the car that you reserved. If you hitchhike to your destination, you'll definitely be riding in a cleaner car. If you steal a car, the cops will definitely give you friendlier customer service than these clowns. Awful. This Hertz looks like a shack but that doesn't mean you're going to get poor customer service. My car was in the shop for about a month and a half for a full body makeover due to a car accident. I had excellent insurance coverage with AAA and my rental was taken care of. I'm glad Hertz made the whole debacle bearable. I had to wait awhile since there were only two agents at the front desk and a few customers but when it was my time everything was simple and efficient. The agents are chatty and since I was a customer for a lengthy period of time I got to know them well. They gave me rides to/from my office when I needed them and as I was pulling out of their tricky parking lot, one of their employees pointed out the hidden street sign that forbid turns. It would have been a moving violation for me if he didn't point out that sign. This Albany location for Hertz is very small. I wouldn't expect a five star experience from them but I wouldn't expect the one star experience many have had. I guess I was just lucky. read more

I had the single worst rental care experience of my (very long) life at the Hertz on San Pablo. It is hard to describe just how awful this company really is. I returned the car on a Saturday, when it was due to be returned. The company was closed on Saturday, and I dropped off the keys and my paperwork. However, I was charged a late fee because nobody was there to receive the keys until Monday. I was also charged an "AAO fee" but when I called no one could explain to me what an AAO is (I think it is a fee for an additional driver, but I was told there wouldn't be an additional charge for my wife, and she and I were the only ones driving the car). Finally, I was assessed a $300 cleaning fee because there was allegedly dog hair on the back seat. We did have a small dog; had Hertz been open and my car inspected when I returned it, I would have gladly visited a car wash and vacuumed the backseat. The dog doesn't shed, and I've never been charged a cleaning before despite hundreds of previous trips (many with Hertz). When I called Hertz customer service to complain about the bogus charge, I was put on hold for half an hour and eventually gave up. Once burned, twice wise: I'll never deal with these guys again. read more

My extremely short-lived experience here was nothing short of abhorrent. I reserved a car online without a problem and got there at the correct time to wait for my co-renter. Not once in the entire fifteen minutes that I waited was I ever approached for any type of customer service, which in and of itself was not terribly off-putting, but which made an impression all the same. Once my friend arrived, though, the place informed us that they had been closed for half an hour. Now I could understand the total dearth of customer service. And yet... what?? Why would you let a customer place a reservation for AFTER closing time, especially when you then refused to honor the reservation even though everyone was all still in the office? I was turned away with the "courtesy" that canceling my reservation wouldn't require any action on my part. And shortly thereafter I learned that every other car rental agency had closed for the evening as well, which meant I was completely out of a car. It might be unorthodox, but is refusing someone a few minutes of barely-after-hours service (when this person had technically "reserved" half an hour or more of your time) and bringing in $0 really preferable to taking the few minutes to bring in over $100?? In short, they ruined my trip plans because they either had HORRIBLE organizational abilities (they could not coordinate their business hours with their reservation times) or because they were just plain lazy. Either one earns them both zero dollars and a scathing review. read more

I have rented cars here twice in the past 2 months. The first time the car was clean and the service was good, but they were awfully busy and it took longer than I would have liked. Then I realized I forgot something in the car. I called the next day and there was no response to my inquiry. Unfortunately for me this place is really close to my residence so I rented another car a few weeks later. The rate was about $22 more per day for this category vehicle than it was before. I looked in the backseat and there was some sugar ( I hope it was sugar) spilled all over the back seat. I was in a hurry so I didn't complain. I had made advanced reservations by calling and I still had to wait about 10 minutes. If I had a choice of a more convenient location I would not have rented from this store. read more

Our rental was fully covered by our insurance but instead the employee charged our account... Not the $50 but the whole bill. Basically wiping out a paycheck. I don't know if it is an employee training issue or just a simple oversight. But then, the manager was on break so we now have to file a claim with our bank instead of having Hertz refund the money outright. It has been 2 days without the money that should be in our account. If you use this company be sure you know how much they will charge you and make sure they only charge you for that amount. read more

We were turned away for our 6:00 pm reservation because we arrived at 6:03 or 6:05pm. The door was locked and the clerk was assisting two customers inside and refused to speak to me at the door. He kept grimacing at me and mouthing "we are closed" as I stood by with my baby and preschooler. I approached another employee outside washing a vehicle outside and asked if this was normal. His response was "We close at 6:00." I told him I had a 6:00 reservation. He simply shrugged his shoulders and turned away. Next the clerk ushered the customers out the SIDE DOOR to avoid speaking with us. My husband confronted the clerk at the side entrance and said he wanted to discuss our 6:00 reservation and the clerk said "We are closed." He continued to tell my husband that he wouldn't process our reservation because they closed at 6:00 and it would cause more work for him. We never got our vehicle. They don't bow and scrape to you with chihuahua grins here but they are straightforward and helpful. Doug let me try 2 cars and made calls to three offices to try to find the model I wanted. Written on 8-18-2020: Someone hit my car while I was grocery shopping, forcing me to deal with my insurance company, and thru it Caliber Collision in Berkeley and a rental car from Hertz in Berkeley (San Pablo). I was worried about getting a rental car during this pandemic, but honestly, the service for the customer, me, was simply excellent! The driver who picked me up at Caliber Auto Body Shop (also excellent) was, I think his name was, JP. -- So nice and helpful! The people at the desk both when I checked in, and when I called letting them know I had left the car at Caliber were very efficient, nice, and helpful. JP made sure my rental care was doubly-santitized (sp?). Can highly recommend, especially because of JP (or whomever was the driver for me to take me to Caliber to Hertz. Thank you. read more
