What a horrible experience, from start to finish. This location is inside of a monthly parking garage, and they had one attendant staffing the entire operation when I went on a Friday morning right at open. No self-service either. Just a long line of people with reservations, forced to wait to check in (again) at the counter. It took me over 45 minutes just to check in, despite having reserved a car weeks in advance. Moreover, their hours on the window don't match the hours listed in the app, which means that booking online is unnecessarily restrictive (and apparently useless, since this location doesn't honor online reservations). Hertz, if you can't hold partner locations to some sort of standard, at least let us know ahead of time, so that folks know where to give their business. Definitely do not rent from this location! read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Indescribable how horrible this experience was. Reserved a gas car in advance for a trip upstate, 10:00 AM pickup. We wait in line while one person slowly checks everyone in (not his fault; should be staffed better). At 11:30 AM, we're finally next in line and he announces they're out of all cars except EVs. The next gas car was set to arrive in "maybe an hour, maybe more." We had already wasted so much time that we took the EV and subsequently spent so much time and money taking cabs everywhere while the car charged. Such a waste. And every person at Hertz says "there's nothing they can do" because "we signed for the car." No mention of the fact that we had PAID EXTRA to RESERVE a GAS CAR at 10:00 AM. I truly hope all upper management for Hertz has an awful, terrible life due to the mistakes of others while everyone sweetly apologies and says "there's nothing we can do." I have never felt such hatred for a brand before and can't wait to shout from the rooftops at everyone I know to avoid Hertz like the plague. Doesn't care about their employees or their customers. Perfect example of why you should never rent from a Local: I must have rented over a hundred cars and almost never have problems at airports, and often have problems at HLEs. I have come to this place three times over a couple of months to pick up a car. Twice there were problems. First time was something like 90 minutes and nine drivers' wait. Everyone got Teslas and had to be schooled on them. Second time was easy-breezy. This time, however, I arrive half an hour prior to pickup and was told they have no cars! More were coming in about an hour. I asked if they were just talking about Teslas, as I was looking for a gas powered car. That's when they said "the manager's special means whatever extra cars we have, and if that's a Tesla, that's what you get." They also told me my "managers special" pricing would be void and that I'd have to pay the difference for an upgrade. How does "pay a slight discount for whatever car we have left" become "we will charge you for an upgrade you didn't want or ask for"?? I made sure they had my phone number and went outside to call customer service. Guess what? Hertz took the line away and left the phone number on their website!! So I read my fine print and discovered: 1) unless you prepay, no car is EVER guaranteed, And 2) They can't up charge a customer if the only car on the lot is more expensive than their reservation. So, remembering that they offer free cancellation if you haven't picked up your car, I looked on Priceline for and reserved a car from an airport. Then I called Hertz and canceled my reservation. Even though it was 15 minutes after I was due to pick up, the rep did what I asked. It's so hard to rent from, and so easy to cancel. I can't get the business model for this location, but at least I don't have to pay extra to get jerked around. My recommendations for renting cars around NYC: Go to an airport. Best cars, pricing and availability. If you must rent local, try the hertz near Grand Army Plaza. They aren't quite as backed up as this place. Always know the full details of your agreement. This is quite honestly the best rental car experience I've ever had, and it confuses me that it's my local spot that I go to regularly. In all other instances in my life, the good stuff seems to be located inconveniently far from wherever I happen to be. I'm also surprised to be saying it, but you should sign up for the gold membership thingy (technical term). It's actually worth it. I reserve online, show up with my ID and member number, and I'm driving away in two minutes. When I'm returning, it's equally painless. I pull up, hand someone the keys, exchange some pleasantries, and I'm on my way.* Nothing in NYC is ever this easy. It's bizarre. I also want to give a shoutout to Isaiah, because I love that dude. He's personable, efficient, and just an all around good guy/employee. You should keep him around, Hertz. And honestly, just about every other person I've dealt with here has been on their game too. I arrived to pick up my car during the pick up window, but they had "given my car away" and demanded an extra $50 for a car upgrade for a model I didn't want. Even when I showed them the policy, and that the rate was guaranteed, the "manager" Thomas refused to fix the rate. Picking up my car for a week long road trip was easy as could be - the staff were proactive, helpful, and kept cool-headed while juggling lots of people arriving and leaving at the same time and my car was clean and exactly what I needed. It was really a mixed bag here. I got a pretty competitive rate on a corolla at $47/day however when I showed up 15 mins before closing they were understaffed and had 3 or 4 upset people waiting. After about a 15 minute wait they told me they did not have my car. That in fact they only had a cargo van and it hadnt been vacuumed. If I wanted my car id have to wait 30 minutes for it to arrive from another location. I was ready to give 1 star at this point. BUT, the manger gave me a rate cheaper than your typical cab ride and I was going to ikea and need the extra room anyway lol. I wish you could see the look on my gf face when she realized how much ikea furniture we could potentially fit in this van. Alls well that ends well. Don't rent from here. I rented and returned my car a day early as I didn't need it anymore. The Hertz worker said she would email me the receipt. When I finally did receive the receipt several days later, it showed a return time as the day after I actually returned. This wouldn't have been a problem except someone (I'm assuming a Hertz employee) racked up toll charges between the time I actually returned the car and the time marked as returned. I later received a bill from PlatePass for $55 of tolls. I contacted Hertz corporate who said they would talk to the rental location but the rental location hasn't responded to them in over a month. Now I'm stuck with $55 in toll charges I didn't actually incur. read more

When we arrived we were told that they only hold cars for 30 mins past the reservation time, and that you should call ahead if you're running late. Nowhere in the confirmation email does it even say any of this. Additionally, I had been calling them before the reservation time to notify them that we'll be late, but no one was answering the phone. As we sat there trying to figure out how to get out of the city, 4 other people came and were told the same thing. However, the 4th person was there within 30 minutes of her reservation and still, they didn't have a car for her. She was also attempting to call ahead but no one answered. This all leads me to believe they never had the cars we reserved to begin with and that they were aware of this possibly even the night before. A car was returned right in front of us, but he gave us the run around that it needed to be disinfected because of covid, yada yada. Fine. Though I have an inkling if I had some Karen in me, it could've been an option. Some advanced notice would've been ideal. Also could have been spared the patronizing treatment with inconsistent "rules" that were never previously advertised. Didn't appreciate the curtness when trying to at least get the number for their LaGuardia branch either. Needless to say, never again. read more

Here is my experience renting an SUV from Hertz during the pandemic: I needed a car on a Saturday to get to a film shoot that had to take place outside to be respectful of social distancing. It was essential that it be day light to be able to film. Because most locations are closed on Sunday, I rented an SUV for the entire weekend. I showed up at the Atlantic Ave location at 8:45 for my 9 am pick up and there were about 25 clients ahead of me in the indoor garage. The line did not move, and people were not served on a fist come first serve basis. "Gold Members" were given priority. At 11 we were told that there were no more cars available. By this time the line was closer to 45 people and went all the way outside and around the building. At 11:30 I was told there could be a car but that we would have to go to another location (Boerum Pl). I was told that there was only one spot available in the shuttle (a small SUV filled with strangers during.... a pandemic!) and that either my husband or I would have to make our day there on our own. I RAN to the other location where we were given the keys to a car we were supposed to pick up 4 hours earlier. Once we were on the road, we noticed the car was filthy. It had not been cleaned or sanitized between uses. I found half eaten snacks and used face masks between the seats. The windshield washer fluid was empty. Needless to say, by the time we got to location, it was too late to work. The sun was setting. I paid $310.04 to not only miss work but have my health and the health of dozens of other Hertz clients put at risk. This was not my first experience with Hertz, and I been a generally satisfied customer, but this last rental experience was unsanitary and unsafe. I expect this kind of unreliability and dirty service when I rent a Zip Car, not when I lease from Hertz. Calling customer service was equally insulting: the most they could offer was a $50 voucher. read more

I rented a car on February 27th. They took out from my account $683.00. When i go to check my bank statement they took out $189.97. Now it appears that i can't see the $683.00 that Hertz took out. Then I notice they took out another $189.97. I contacted Hertz 1-800 number, and they said wait till 5 - 10 business days that maybe my bank is holding the funds BS. I went to my Bank, and they said they will never withhold anyone accounts. I do have receipts so can't never say that $683.00 wasn't taken out from my account. Hard to get the attention of someone, so just stay out of the way because there will be a lot of cars coming in and out. Booked a sedan online and called Hertz customer service to let them know I was running 30 min late because no one picks up calls at this location. Upon arrival I was informed that my reservation was given away to someone else and the only other vehicle that was available would cost an additional $140. i can't believe I'm writing a 1 star review for Hertz, because I rent from them exclusively almost every month and have been very happy with every experience. However, this weekend we rented from this location and it was terrible. To start, the car was dirty when we got it and was obviously not cleaned from the previous renters. The windshield had something splattered all over it from the inside and there was something spilled around the cup holders, as well as crumbs all over the seats. But the car worked and got us to where we were going, so whatever. When we arrived to return it, they were either understaffed or disorganized but there was a huge pile-up of cars waiting in one big mess and nobody tending to them. Finally, after sitting outside for 25 mins we were able to pull in and two guys came up to us and we had to ask them to let us get our things out before they sped off inside the garage and started racing the cars. The woman working in the office was nice enough but the whole experience just left us with a bad impression. Maybe this was a fluke but I am definitely never renting from this location again. read more

Arrived at 9 for a 9 am reservation. Now it's 11 am. Still not at the counter. They have one employee working to deal with the rush of people wanting to leave for the weekend. He is doing all the car check ins, car cleaning and car check outs. He is not fast. Not incompetent, but not particularly motivated to move any faster, and is fine with customers in this never ending line who decide to be, nonetheless, chatty. He's just gonna keep on keep in' on, whatever. Even though it is taking him 30-40 minutes to process a single customer. We are all missing our weekend plans. Nobody is able to reach customer service. Tweeting at Hertz, they say to DM them but nobody answers and there's nobody to DM but Hertz general. There is no express pickup option for Gold members. If you want to spend your weekend standing in a subterranean garage to be treated like crap for hours for the honor of paying Hertz hundreds of dollars to have missed most of your plans and spend the tatters of your weekend apologizing to your family, this is the place for you. read more

I felt compelled to come on and leave a review, since I was horrified by a few of the reviews on here while I was researching whether or not to use this Hertz location (it's much more convenient to my apartment than going all the way to the airport). We've rented a car from this location twice now in the past 3 months, and both times were very positive experiences. We never waited more than a few minutes to be helped, we got a clean, new car each time, and each rental experience was very good, including the staff that helped us. I'll definitely continue to use this location. I'm guessing it can probably get hectic / busy here at times - just like at any car rental place, but the rentals / returns I've done so far have all be great. I'm guessing some of the bad reviews are a case of people only bothering to write a review when something goes wrong, so I decided to leave some positive feedback here, for anyone reading the bad reviews and becoming alarmed - it's a great location, and to me well worth not having to go all the way to JFK for my rental. read more

We rented an SUV for a cross-country drive recently & I have to single out Cicily as easily the best Hertz representative I've ever seen. Not only did she go above and beyond to attend to every detail of our reservation, but she was quite clearly doing everything at that location - including running back and forth to answer the phone & deal with customers, all with a smile and a gracious manner. This woman single-handedly made our rental experience extremely pleasant - & we've rented a lot of vehicles so we know how rare Cicily's level of service is. She's also super hot - my wife & I both had a bit of a crush on her by the time we drove away.:) Hertz: for godssake give this woman a raise! And the audacity of them to want a deposit of $250! And still want me to do their jobs. I would never return to the Atlantic ave location! It's cheaper to get a rental in the Bronx and return it to any location. And when I came to this location a few weeks prior to return. I got there 5 minutes before they closed and everything was already shut off, computers, everything. My credit card was used in another state after I used it at this Hertz Rent a car location, I informed the staff about my credit card compromise. Upon renting the car I never left NY, and I only use this credit card once in a while. The staff informed me they will inform the fraud department and stated he will get back to me. It never happened, I live two blocks away from Hertz, so every time I went in they acted like nothing was wrong, and kept giving me the run around for 3 months. Excellent personal service, first time renting here, normally rent from the airport but rate here was much cheaper. Budget time for them to get the car and process your rental even if you are Gold or higher. The process was smooth once car arrived though they do take pictures of the car, was told I would get a copy but never did. Next time I will take my own as well. The return process was the same, budget a little time for it. It would have gone quicker if the customer survey wasn't pushed on us. Fine for the first attempt but when it didn't load, just let it go. Wish there were better hours, another Brooklyn location even has Sunday hours though be it only open for five hours but late on Sunday in the summer. Will rent here again. read more

Made a confirmed reservation to pick up a car a few days ago for 12pm for today (Saturday). I showed up at 12:08 and they're closed. Spoke to a representative and he nonverbally gestured that they're closed. When I asked for assistance he then explained to me that they were "pretty much out of cars" and gave my reservation away. I also politely asked why would I then be given a confirmed reservation at the their closing time? Does it make sense to schedule to do business at the exact time that you plan on closing? He shrugs and goes about his "business". I told him that I was charged for my reservation and he hands me a number while letting me know that they may keep my deposit. Makes little sense. I rent from here several times a month and the staff at this location is the best out of all the Hertz locations in the city, hands down. Every single time I rent from here, it's a great experience. Even though they don't have premium cars, practically every car I do get is fantastic. They have a good number of SUVs, which are my personal favorite, if that's what you're looking for. Very good service here, especially compared to Avis across the street! Only down side is Hertz is closed Sundays but open Monday at 8am so from a weekend rental, you can bring it back Monday. I've done that a few times. It's convenient enough. Location is good too. It's cheaper for a multi-day rental than zipcar too.
