This is what happened to us for our 5/1/2026 rental reservation. Booked a reservation to travel to a wedding, showed up at the Gastonia NC location to pickup the car at 8a. We were told that they tried to call us, we look on our phone (in front of them) we have received no calls, then she said she was mistaken we were sent a text, pull out phone again no texts. We are then told they have no cars, and "we should try coming back late that afternoon". Problem being we need to be at our destination that afternoon and need to travel 4 plus hours away. We asked if there is another location we can pickup the car up from and we were told there are no cars in Charlotte, and we may want to try to call Rock Hill, Hickory, or Corneluis. Asked if they could do that and were told no. We ask to cancel told to call 800-654-4173 and talk to hertz billing. First call - Stuck in AI hell, hung up try again Second call -run around about canceling because it is after our pickup time, finally put on hold for 15 minutes only to be hung up on. Third call - still non-apologetic , said there would be a $39.95 cancellation fee. After being put on hold to discuss with supervisor, told fee waived and a cancellation receipt and number sent to us. One hour goes by, and no email. Fourth call - said there would be a $39.95 cancellation fee. Explained I didn't cancel the reservation Hertz did. After being put on hold , told fee would be waived. When asked for the cancellation number, since I didn't receive the last email, I was told there was no such thing, and no records of my previous calls. Summary: Phantom car booked. Wedding missed, Wife in tears, Thank you for ruining our chance to take part in a family milestone. read more

Overall, I was reluctant to pick Hertz over the industry standard, Enterprise. Apples to apples comparison, Hertz beat Enterprise from pricing to ease of location for pick up along with the quality car selection. My interaction with Tom (manager) was business like with a hint of southern hospitality. In town for my daughter's wedding, the rental developed a windshield crack upon the utilization of the defroster. Assuming Hertz would place blame on me being the last renter of the vehicle, I immediately phoned Tom to make him aware of the problem. Upon the return of the vehicle, my expectation was a verbal conflict to defend that a hairline crack was preexistent. To my astonishment, I was pleasantly surprised of the contrary...zero blame game. Service is top notch, Tom is great. I could not get the car that I had booked in the original reservation. I had booked a Tesla, it was not available due to mechanical failure. They took off some amount from the rental and waived off the recharge. read more

This Hertz location has been the easiest location to deal with. I've been happy both times I've rented. They make everything so smooth. The rates with Hertz is the lowest I've found in our area. read more

Not impressed at all. Seems like they find something wrong with the rental when it gets turned back in to them. I can not recommend Hertz to anyone I know. The assistant manager... horrible. read more

Beware! If you're returning one of their vehicles on Sunday. The day they're closed for business! Make sure you check the bottom of your agreement to see what time they have assigned you to return vehicle. They will nonchalantly tell you to bring it back whenever on Sunday, in hopes you will bring it back past the return time they assigned you. They will then charge you for an additional full days rental. Shady business scheme. Associate asked me if I thought Hertz Gastonia, NC was trying to benefit by ripping people off for one extra days rental. I said: If you're doing it to a 1000 Sunday returns that come in past the return time you assigned, but didn't tell customers about, F*** yes, your benefiting Hertz Gastonia, NC. This location has had 4700+ complaints with BBB in 3yrs and only settle a little over a 1/3 of them. Why do we forget to check out these shady businesses with BBB, before we get taken by them? This location has been the most helpful rental company I have ever worked with. They have great employees and have helped me get the right rental for my business on multiple occasions. Brian and the other staff members have always gone the extra mile and that is definitely not always the case at all locations. read more

Wouldn't let me rent with parents credit card even though I was at their other location and they allowed it, told me after I paid 50$ for an Uber to get here from there other location that had no vehicles left, thanks for being understanding around the holidays! Never using hertz again. read more

I wish I could leave no stars because of how utterly horrible our experience was with Hertz. We booked well in a month advance and paid for everything up front. The day we went to pick up the vehicle we called early to see if it would be ready a bit sooner than end of day only to find out no one told us about a fine print feature of needing an entirely separate card for a deposit, something neither of us had. So instead of informing us, they chose to hide it hoping we would be too late to cancel and be unable to get the nearly $1300 back that we had already prepaid to reserve the vehicle. When called and asked about they said we should have been notified of the specific rules of the deposit in email but since we had not been, it "wasn't their problem". In the end they still kept a chunk of our payment because it was too close to our pick up to get it back and we had to try and find someone with a vehicle in less than two hours for our out of town trip. Thankfully Enterprise saved our trip and for less money and hassle. I will not ever be a return customer to Hertz. read more

I scheduled a 5 day rental with this location through Corporate Perks for a pick up at 12PM on Saturday, 8/8, for a vacation. I received email confirmation of the rental pickup time. When I arrived at 12:05, the car was sitting in the designated "pick up" spot, prepped and ready, but the doors were locked. The man who opened the door informed me that they had closed at noon and refused to honor the printed reservation, which had no indication on it of closing times and had actually offered options for pickup later in the day. I understand regular hours, but a) there was no indication that they closed at that time on the paperwork, b) it was a reasonable assumption they were open later if later pick up times were offered, and c) the employee lost the company the entire fee, since I was not required to provide a credit card and could not be charged a cancellation fee. All over five minutes! I will not rent from this location, and would not recommend them, since they do not honor reservations. read more

I have pretty much always rented cars from Hertz, just because for me it's one of those things where you are happy with a company and then you just keep going back there. It's when things aren't going exactly to plan that you find out the true colors of a company and in this case Hertz went the extra mile to make sure I was satisfied with my experience. I purchased the fuel option but didn't completely understand what it meant. Then I filled up the car right before returning it, make sure it was topped off all the way too, but of course I was still charged for the fuel as per the agreement. After I explained my situation the manager did his thing and shortly thereafter they were able to refund the fuel charge, but not because they had to but because they wanted me to be a happy customer. I also had to deal with a 3rd party company called Plate Pass because of a toll charge that was accompanied with a service fee that applied to the number of days of the rental (11 days), turning a $1.64 toll into a $24.75 charge. I explained to Plate Pass that I was not aware how this worked and as a one-time courtesy they reduced the service charge to 1 day. Thank you wonderful people at Hertz :) read more
